H E A D M A S TE R’ S W E LCO M E There is a sense of family and community that underpins the huge variety of goings on at Elstree. As we welcomed back staff and pupils and greeted parents at the start of the Autumn Term, I was reminded of just what a special community we have here – and quite rightly, this became our theme for the term ahead. Having celebrated with our Elstree community like never before at the 175 Ball in July, it was wonderful to find that same sense of joy and togetherness uniting us at both the Pre-Prep Family Day and the Welcome Back Drinks – a brief and lively party, which felt like it could have gone on long after the Boarders’ lights went out! Likewise, Bonfire Night brought us together again and with children leading the charge, we all enjoyed the spectacle of the evening and one another’s company. As always, the warmth and generosity of our Elstree community has extended beyond our school walls. Our annual Gift Fair always fills the halls with great excitement and the pupils never fail to gape in awe and wonder at the fantastic hampers kindly donated by our parents. This year the proceeds of the Gift Fair went towards Daisy’s Dream, a charity that supports children and their families affected by life-threatening illness or bereavement. PALS, another charity close to our heart, visited Elstree twice this term and it is always rewarding to see our Year 7 pupils interact and support our visitors with a combination of sensitivity and fun as they work towards their Elstree Award. This term I have been especially heartened by our Year 2 boys and girls who have paid visits to members of Stroke Care at Woolhampton Village Hall. Instigated by Mrs Bond, these are trips that have reminded us of the special ability children have to support and soothe with their straight-forward charm and innocence. I believe the Stroke Care patients, the pupils and the staff who oversaw these trips will treasure the crafts and particularly the conversations that took place. 2

Local Primary Schools, Woolhampton, Bradfield, Hermitage, Bucklebury, Hampstead Norreys, Englefield, Brimpton and Yattendon joined us for a Primary Schools’ Cross Country Relay in November. It was a stunning afternoon, and I was proud and delighted to be able to offer our grounds to other schools so that their young pupils could enjoy the fun of competing in such a glorious space. Of course, there has been so much to celebrate this term at Elstree beyond our Community. As ever, the following pages are testament to the endeavours of our pupils as they have risen to the challenge in facing academic exams and assessments. We make no excuse for encouraging the boys and girls at Elstree to stretch themselves academically and to fulfil their potential to the best of their unique and individual abilities. Beyond the classroom, we have seen the children excel in their football and hockey matches, in school plays, musical concerts and in their Art and DT projects. As baubles started to glitter from trees, lights and tinsel twinkled in dormitories and cold hands were warmed by the hallway fire, the excitement of Christmas certainly took hold towards the end of term. The Elstree children have supported charities with glorious singing at carol concerts, read lessons in church with poise and confidence and they have celebrated together with plenty of good cheer. These are the children who will grow up to look after our Community and they will serve us well. My thanks to you all for being a part of it today and especially to our Friends of Elstree, a wonderful group who work with such energy and generosity to bring us together and build a future for our school with projects that benefit our children and those around us. I hope you enjoy reading the latest news from Elstree.

B OA R D I N G R E P O RT Our first term in the Boarding House is one that Mrs Morris and I will look back on very fondly indeed! The landings have been buzzing throughout the term with everyone making us feel very welcome in our new role at Elstree. We do pack a huge amount in and there is no doubt that everyone was ready for their Christmas Holidays, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

later, our Ready, Steady, Cook! winners were treated to a slap-up lunch where they feasted until fit to burst! The Year 6 children honed their bushcraft skills under

treated to a very special night. On the final night of term, we were delighted by a surprise visit from the ‘Man in Red’ at the Boarders’ Readings and Carols. A favourite of many, this cosy service in front of the fire in the Front Hall, with the Christmas tree twinkling atmospherically in the background, is always a very special way to end the Autumn Term.

Big Weekends are the highlights of every term and the Autumn Term was no exception. The Year 8 children enjoyed a ‘Silent Disco’ in the Long Room, followed

by s’mores and treats around fire bowls outside – and all this before departing for France the next morning! The Year 7s took part in Ready, Steady, Cook! This

the expert guidance of Mr Attwood and Mr Parks. Some fun Laser Tag games followed the next morning after the customary full English breakfast. The Year 5s were also treated to a Taster Evening during which they competed in a Capture the Flag game in the main house - all great fun! Escape from Colditz, with Mr Prichard at the helm, lived up to all expectations. With a huge number of boarders taking part, about half of the escapees made it to Plantation without being caught by the guards. Better luck next year, staff!

Our thanks go to all the residential staff for their energy and enthusiasm when it comes to running their clubs and managing the landings. Thank you, in particular, to Miss Boyd and Miss Bristow for their loyal support. The matronal team are first class and we are very lucky to have them. We bid a very fond farewell to Mrs Hatton this term and we thank her for her outstanding service to Elstree and wish her all the best for the future. The final thank you is to Mrs Morris, Queen of the Brews! Here’s to many more fun times ahead in the Boarding House!

cooking-themed Big Weekend saw them all donning chef’s garb and competing to see which team could produce the most appetising and tasty supper. The next morning they all took part in the inaugural ‘Elstree Olympics’ under the careful watch of Mr Varney. A week In mid-October, Mrs Morris and I hosted Elstree’s first ever Family Fortunes evening. Incredibly, about 150 of the Elstree Boarding Community gathered in the McMullen Hall for a brilliant evening of quizzing, laughter, food and drink. Our survey says… Great success! The Boarders’ Christmas Party signalled the start of the final run-in to the holidays and, thanks to fun games and a delicious Christmas-themed supper, we were all Elstree Echo Issue 23

Elstree Leavers at Senior School It is always such a pleasure to see our Elstree Old Boys and Girls and catch up on how they are getting on at Senior School. Over the last term, we are thrilled to have caught up with pupils who are now at Eton, Downe House, Radley, Bradfield, Harrow, Pangbourne and Sherborne. If you have news you would like to share, please email office@elstreeschool.org.uk, we would love to hear from you.

It was wonderful to welcome back our Elstree 2023 Leavers for the unveiling of an engraved ship’s bell that they so kindly donated as a leaving present, as well as a school gong and paddle boards for the Elstree Lake. Former Head Boy, Alex Hoare Nairne did the honours in cutting the ribbon before Mr Inglis led the group in prayer: “May the marvellous gong herald the start of lunch, for which we are always grateful, may the magnificent bell call us in from second break without complaint, and may the paddle boards remain calm and steady on the bottom of the lake! We thank God for these gifts, and for gift of his son, Jesus Christ. Amen” It was wonderful to see this year group join together once again and to hear how they are getting on at their Senior Schools. We do hope they will be back again soon!

Many thanks to Trevor Kidson for refereeing, what was a competitive and keenly fought encounter, so well. The morning ended with a drink and pizza; much reminiscing of matches and footballing exploits from the past (some from the distant past!). A hugely enjoyable day was had by everyone and talk of next year could be heard as the teams departed.

E L S TR E E 175 175 Day Brilliantly masterminded by Mr Attwood, children were dispersed across the Elstree grounds in their Houses to take part in a carousel of fun games including British Bulldogs and Crocker. Regrouping at Bates, Mr Westley drenched the pupils with water before they dashed off on the Colour Run, where cups of pink and blue paint were doused over the children as they ran. Proudly splashed in the Elstree colours, everyone finished the Colour Run to be rewarded with a huge ice-cream. The Pre-Prep had similar celebrations the following day and were equally thrilled with the messiness of the water and paint combination – and of course the ice cream at the end!

Summer Concert The Elstree 175 Concert was set in the grounds by the Rose Garden. The string orchestra kicked off the concert with a lovely rendition of Dangerous Dive. The school orchestra then followed on with Clarior ex Obscuro and The Great Escape. Petra McKay sang I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables beautifully and the Years 3 and 4 Choir had the audience singing along to the chorus of The Drunken Sailor. Mr Schuman’s own song Into the Blitz followed and then the flute group treated us to a jazzy version of the Laundrette Blues. Next was the Years 5 and 6 Choir who sang Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho and Don’t Build Your House with great confidence and a lovely tone. Leonardo La Corte sang Blackbird by Paul McCartney beautifully and then came the school Jazz Band who played Watermelon Man. Derek Lee played a Prelude by J.S. Bach – and it was wonderful to hear the cello resonating across the Rose Garden! Lean on Me was sung beautifully by the Chapel Choir with amazing harmonies and then a combined choir sang Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. To top it all was the winning House Song, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida sung by South House. It was a beautiful afternoon of music to celebrate an important milestone in Elstree’s history. 175 Ball With over 450 Elstree families, staff both past and present and a veritable army of Old Boys and Girls, the Elstree 175 Ball was set to be a party like no other Elstree has ever seen. “Dashes of pink” were proudly prominent and delicious canapés and a three-course meal were devoured. Bubbles and Whispering Angel flowed freely topped off by late night Espresso Martinis and ‘going home’ toasties. An incredible band and DJ kept the dancefloor well and truly buzzing. The giant Disco Ball sparkled all night, beautiful flowers adorned every table and in keeping with Elstree tradition, jars of 3 sweets were available to all. The 175 Ball Committee had thought of every detail and Lower has never sparkled so spectacularly. When it came to the end of the night, the calls for ‘just one more song’ at 2am told its own story. This was a party that could happily have gone on all night. The extraordinary energy, creativity and hard work of the committee certainly paid off. As one kind guest described, “the collective outpouring of energy and joy” from the Elstree community defied all expectations. For those who joined us, we hope you will agree that it was a truly incredible evening. With huge thanks to Didi Walker and the 175 Ball Committee for everything they did to make it such a success, and to those who joined us in making it a truly memorable event.

E L S TR E E CO M M U N IT Y Welcome Back Drinks It was wonderful to see Elstree parents old and new come together at the Welcome Back Drinks. The last occasion we were all together was at the Elstree 175 Ball, and it felt as if we could have had a re-run! The Elstree grounds were looking stunning thanks to our superb grounds and maintenance teams. Lara and her fantastic catering team served up delicious canapés, while magnums of Whispering Angel were whipped around by Elstree staff. Our thanks goes to the Friends of Elstree team who always bring us together for such fun occasions. It was full of the promise of great friendships and happy memories to be made over the year ahead.

Tatler Schools Awards 2024 It was a proud moment for Elstree when Mr Inglis was named Best Head of a Prep School by Tatler Schools at the start of the Autumn Term. Truly humbled to receive this accolade, Mr Inglis said: “It is such an honour to receive this award. Thank you to Tori Cadogan and the Tatler team. We all know that our schools thrive on the strength of our fantastic teams. I am fortunate to have the unstinting support of Olivia who is integral to the success and happiness of Elstree. Thanks also to Simon Attwood, my Senior Deputy Head, as well as the whole Elstree community – the senior team, all the staff, pupils, parents and Governors. In our 175th year, this gives us another reason to celebrate!”

E L S TR E E CO M M U N IT Y Bonfire Night Parents and pupils happily mingled under the twinkling lights on Yard and the stalls of autumn produce, vintage sweets, hot dogs and of course, the Grown-Up bar did a roaring trade. Mrs Syckelmoore’s spectacular Guy was ready to take centre stage and this year, Mickey Caloia, our youngest pupil in the Prep School accepted the privilege of helping Mr Inglis strike the match to light the bonfire. The crowd roared a countdown and rocket after rocket lit up the sky, bathing Park in light and glitter. Full of high-jinx and chatter, Elstree pupils and families returned to the Terrace before waving goodbye. The funds raised from Bonfire Night will go towards Friends of Elstree projects, which are always so thoughtfully selected for the school and our lucky pupils. Thanks as ever to our groundsmen and the Friends of Elstree team for making it another night to remember.

Tree Planting Ceremony Five beautiful birch trees have been kindly donated by Elstree parents. Originally used to decorate the magnificent Sperry tent for our 175 Elstree Ball, they now have roots in the Front Lawn where they will grow and be enjoyed by the Elstree community for another 175 years to come. Our huge thanks go to Mr and Mrs Bevan, Mr and Mrs Foulds, Mr and Mrs Foulkes, Mr and Mrs Gilbert and Mr and Mrs Pannell.

Gift Fair Stalls, hamper raffles and delicious refreshments provided by Imogen’s Apron kept eager our shoppers busy! The Year 7 pupils did a fantastic job of welcoming guests and running stalls with incredible charm and efficiency. Every Elstree year group also kept the crowds entertained with their beautiful singing in the McMullen Hall. A huge sum of £3,200 raised from the Gift Fair was donated to the wonderful charity, Daisy’s Dream. Thank you to our brilliant Gift Fair Committee - we are so grateful for all your hard work and meticulous organisation which ensured that the Gift Fair was such a huge success. 10

PR E P N E WS AC A D EM I C Year 6 STEAM project The Year 6 Pinewood Derby project was our first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) event of the year. The boys and girls participated in the design, build and testing of a small vehicle that ran on stored energy. Working in small teams, the pupils designed their vehicles and carefully considered what would be needed to make it a success. The cars were constructed from pine, plywood, styrofoam and were propelled either by elastic bands or by air expelled

from an inflated balloon – all with varying degrees of success! The children worked well and had a

lot of fun. Well done to everyone who took part and thanks to all of the staff members who supported the activity.

TRIPS Year 8 French Trip The Year 8s had a wonderful trip to Northern France with opportunities to test their French (and enjoy the French cuisine) every day! It wasn’t long before the pupils realised how much they understood and rapidly gained confidence. Whether it was listening to the hotel rules on arrival, ordering food at the local market or exploring the menu for “le diner”, the children were absorbed in French throughout. They visited La Coupole and learnt about France’s occupation, their deportation camps and Hitler’s plans to destroy London. There were trips to the Nausicaa aquarium, the Somme Albert Museum and Thiepval Memorial, as well as visits to the supermarket and boulangerie where the children bought ingredients to make a picnic and learnt how to make bread. The pupils navigated their conversations in French with confidence and courtesy; they also enjoyed completing their journals at the end of every day. They were great company throughout the trip and it was wonderful to see how quickly their French improved whatever their level. Elstree Echo Issue 23

Elstree Book Week 2023

Kindness Week

Fabulous fun was had during Elstree Book Week starting with our whole school parade. Excited children and staff were dressed as Hobbits, Harry Potters, Egyptians, fairies, witches, soldiers, animals and many more. Everyone enjoyed parading and dancing to tunes from Paddington, The Lion King or to the ever-popular Macarena.

In November, we celebrated Kindness Week. Pupils across the Pre-Prep and Prep School were invited to share their thoughts on kindness and boards were set up at each front entrance so that messages of thanks and appreciation could be posted.

Before moving on to rugby, the Elstree boys enjoyed a wonderful football season. The U11As have once again qualified for the ISFA finals, with the Regionals being held at Elstree. We saw some wonderful skills and team play across all matches – this particular team notching up 16 wins!

Sixty-seven children who had made a special effort with their reading over the summer holidays were invited to our special Reading Celebration Party. They enjoyed delicious treats in the library, with everyone talking about their favourite books and recommending stories. Throughout the week, reading related activities took place in the library, classrooms and Art Department. We wrote about magical worlds, designed Hogwarts and dropped in on live events with poets, illustrators and authors via ‘Reading Zone’ and the ‘Reading is Magic’ Festival.

The girls have had a wonderful hockey season, the 1st V11 going on to take Gold at the Hall Grove Tournament. There were plenty of convincing wins against tough competition from both our Senior and Colts Teams; the girls have shown what their commanding presence and courage on the pitch can achieve. As we looked around the school, it was lovely to see the warmth of friendship, the support pupils offer to each other and their polite consideration and good manners, all attributes that make Elstree a kind place to be every day. We are delighted to share that Wilf Foulds and Freddie Carlbom have been awarded Sports Awards to Marlborough. Both boys are truly talented sportsmen and we know they will make a fantastic contribution to their new teams. Elstree has once again been selected as one of the Top 50 Prep Schools in The Cricketer Schools Guide 2023. All entries were judged on extensive criteria – and we don’t doubt that our nomination was cemented by ‘Cricketer of Note’, Mr Sid Inglis, who won 3 international caps for Chile!

DR AMA

Autumn Concert

Around the World in 80 Days

Ready for a musical feast, parents and children filled the McMullen Hall. The Junior String Quartet began with a confident rendition of Cello Squadron by R Meyer. It was lovely to see the younger children playing, especially Iris Yao, who played the cello part on her own.

The Elstree School Orchestra started their performance with a beautiful Menuet by G. F. Handel and ended it with an upbeat Eye Level by J Tromby. Next, the Flute Group played Pink Panther by H. Mancini and a sweet little piece called Sh! Sh! by H. Butterworth. The Middle School Choir sang, Bring me Sunshine and a song that nearly brought tears to people’s eyes - called We are the Young.

Dressed in their Victorian finest, Year 6 wowed audiences with their brilliant performance of Around the World in 80 Days. The show had real heart; a story of daring, adventure and friendship was truly brought to life in the McMullen Hall. James Fane and Izzy Clark were perfectly cast as Phileas Fogg and Passepartout as they deftly circumnavigated the globe. Florence Allison shone as the determined Detective Fix, and Harry Lockwood would not have been out of place in any smart members’ club. The narrators deserve special mention for their brilliant stage management and for guiding the audience through the complex story. Indeed, the whole cast impressed as they juggled trains, boats, tealights, whistles, multiple costume changes, props and even elephants with a maturity and skill far beyond their age. It really was a delight to see them all working together so brilliantly and clearly enjoying themselves immensely. They should all be incredibly proud of themselves!

watches was created by a fabulous team of parent volunteers. Liz Collins’ mastery took us on a musical tour of the world whilst Graham Wootten, Seb Black and Stuart Collymore supported magnificently with lights and sound. A show of this scale requires a massive team effort, and we are beyond grateful to everyone involved in making this whole experience so special.

A stunning set featuring the most enormous world map and golden pocket

Kate Oliver and Isla Sanford sang a stunning duet, For Good and James Morris-Weston astounded the audience with his piano playing of Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum by Debussy. Finally, the Chapel Choir sang Adiemus by Carl Jenkins, which was just amazing! Well done to all those who participated in this stunning event.

PRE-PREP NEWS AC A D EM I C Outdoor Learning Day Elstree Pre-Prep pupils enjoyed an Autumn and Harvest themed Outdoor Learning Day in the woods.

DAYS O U T

a great experience of what a rainforest really feels like!

The Living Rainforest

CO M M U N I T Y

Year 2 had a wonderful day at The Living Rainforest in Hampstead Norreys.

The children in Reception and Year 1 were challenged to take part in a scavenger hunt and to make scarecrows and woodland kebabs out of the leaves, fir cones and sticks they collected.

The vivid blue coloured dart frogs and the brightly coloured Emerald Tree Boa were amazing. The turtles and tortoises were entertaining, the Dwarf Caiman rather shy and the toucan flew about eating fruit with his giant beak. There were unconfirmed reports of movement in the branches, but Cinnamon the sloth remained elusive for another year!

Harvest Festival Wearing beautiful Harvest Crowns and clutching origami pumpkins and apples, the Pre-Prep children walked hand in hand to St. Peter’s Church. Reverend Jane Manley loved their creations and invited the children to decorate the church windows and altar with them.

Whilst the younger children were having fun in the woods, the Year 2s enjoyed a range of activities. Using salt dough, some children sculpted a family of hedgehogs, others visited the lakes to collect pieces of nature to turn into artwork, and the final group made autumnal bar charts using leaves. What better way to learn maths than out in the school grounds!

14

The size, shapes and colours of the plants were amazing and the humid heat of the glasshouses gave everyone

Each year group sung a song about either Autumn or Harvest, and we finished with a group performance of ‘Big, Red, Combine Harvester’. The Harvest Festival is always an opportunity to think of others less fortunate than ourselves, and members of the Pre-Prep kindly donated enough food to West Berkshire Food Bank to make 244 meals.

MUSIC Early Years Concert The children arrived at the McMullen Hall to a sea of smiling faces. Class RP took to the stage to perform Man on the Moon and Standing on the Bus. Then, Nursery sang Tiny Tim, Hickory Dickory Dock and Baa Baa Black Sheep. Finally, Class RR sang By Myself and Keeping to the Beat.

With javelin, relay, ribbon dancing and triple jump there was plenty to try and lots of encouragement and high 5s. Tabitha Hill (RP Class) enjoyed the zigzag running and Bertie Long (RP Class) said he liked jumping over the ‘hoodles’ (Hurdles!) This was also Olive Shanks’ (RR Class) favourite part as there were big and little ones to jump over.

Year 2s First Football Match

The stage was adorned with angels, stars, shepherds, and their sheep. Expert narrators guided us through the story, introducing us to Mary, Joseph, their trusted Donkey, the Angel Gabriel and the Star. The younger children sang beautifully and remembered all the actions. The older children knew exactly when to come onto the stage and remembered their words perfectly. Even the visitors at the very back of the McMullen Hall could hear their fantastic voices.

Our Year 2 children played some fantastic football matches against Cheam.

It was wonderful watching the smiles on the children’s faces as they performed and seeing the smiles on the faces of the audience too. A special thank you to Miss Collins for teaching the children their music and to the class teachers and assistants for perfecting the songs in the classrooms.

S P O RT Mini-Olympics Reception and Nursery enjoyed an afternoon of Mini-Olympics. Mr Bates introduced the Year 8 children who were brilliant at guiding the younger pupils through a carousel of different activities, all based on an Olympic sport. Elstree Echo Issue 23

No scores were taken, and this meant the children could just focus on playing well without any pressure. There were lots of smiling faces, and most importantly, the children clearly had a great time. It was a pleasure to welcome Cheam to our wonderful grounds, and parents, staff and children from both sides all enjoyed a successful afternoon.

Thanks must go to Liz Collins and Sian Bond for directing the Nativity, to Mrs Kidd for the wonderful costumes and Mrs Baxter for organising the props and finer details. Thank you to the many staff for their support both on the day and in the run up to it and of course, a special thank you to the wonderful children for all their effort.

DR AMA Christmas Play Our ‘The Big Little Nativity’ was certainly a BIG story told by little Pre-Prep voices! 15
