Trump Updates Travel Ban with Another Executive Order

President Donald Trump signed an executive order March 6 updating the travel ban on migrants from mainly Muslim nations, the biggest change was removing Iraq from the original ban, as reported by CNN. The revision comes six weeks after the original ban was put in order and eventually stopped by a federal court. The new ban will start March 16 with no more restrictions on travel on Iraq reported USA Today.

The updated ban will not be subjected to people who hold current visas and drops the ban on Syrian refugees, the update also made it clear the ban was not for people who are lawful permanent residents according to CNN. Attorney General Jeff Sessions talked about theycould not risk the nation’s safety by allowing visitors in the county when their governments don’t or can’t release information that will help the US check them properly or when those governments actively supports terrorism.

Hundreds of Montebello High students staged a walkout on the 2nd to Protest the recent actions of the Montebello Unified School DIstrict. From the 20 minute walk from the high school to the unified school district building, protesters were chanting their disapproval with phrases such as “Rojas no Mas”,”Where is the money” and “our district is corrupt”.

Construction Resumes for Keystone XL Pipeline XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter xavier.alatorre1457@my.riohondo.edu

Despite what President Trump said at the Conservative Political Action Conference, the Keystone XL pipeline is being built using non-American steel. Trump announced at CPAC this past Feb. 24, “If they want a pipeline in the United States, they’re going to use a pipe that’s made in the United States,” contradicting his previous statement.

Just seven days after the speech at CPAC, White House spokeswoman told Ben Lefebvre of PoliticoPro, that “the Keystone XL pipeline is currently in the process of being constructed, so it does not count as a new, retrofitted, repaired or expanded pipeline.”

The executive order Trump signed in January, moved to resume the development of the pipelines. The executive order cited key stipulations: “all new pipelines, as well as retrofitted, repaired, or expanded pipelines, inside the borders of the United States, including portions of pipelines, use materials and equipment produced in the United States.”

line is proposed to run from Canada to oil refineries in the Gulf Coast. Protesters argue the extension will cause the “release of more climate-warming carbon into the atmosphere.” Supporters argue the creation of jobs and lower energy costs outweigh the environmental impact.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont issued a statement in response to the executive order, “President Trump ignored the voices of millions and put the short-term profits of the fossil fuel industry ahead of the future of our planet.” Sanders added, “I will do everything I can to stop these pipelines and protect our planet for future generations.”

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, who have protested against the pipelines, vowed they will seek legal action against the order because it “risks contaminating tribal and American water supplies while disregarding treaty rights.”

Other lawmakers were keen on the revived action.

Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota boasts, “it will make our country stronger and more secure by helping us produce and transport more domestic energy.”

Car Crash Near Rio Hondo

A Car Crash involving four vehicles occurred Thursday, March 2, during the morning located near Rose Hills Cemetery and Workman Mill Rd.

Around 10:15 am in the morning a maroon 1996 Toyota Camry swerved into four parked vehicles pushing one of stationed vehicles involved on top of another parked vehicle on the right side of Workman Mill Rd reported by officers of the CHP (California Highway Patrol).

Officer Adams of the CHP was there at the scene and reported that the driver of the

Camry fell asleep. Adams reported that he ran a sobriety test on the driver and everything check out and seemed normal.

Robert Valencia, a homeless man of the age of 63 and owner of the 96 Camry said that he felt weak for a couple weeks when he was involved in a falling accident.

“Two weeks ago I feel in the river bed and my nutrition hasn’t improved for over two weeks. It is very hard to stay strong.”

Valencia stated that he thinks he received a head infection that he needs to seek testing for his blood for any signs of illness.

“The river bed was

murky… the water… the water was murky and brown and that is what I think what got me sick.”

Austin Rodarte a 21 year old General ED student majoring in Beta Arts had a vehicle that was involved in the accident. Rodarte stated that felt shocked when walking towards his blue 2004 Honda Civic seeing the police cars.

“I saw the police cars and I was just hoping it wasn’t me. Now I am worried because how I am going to get to work.”

No one was severely hurt in the incident nor taken to the hospital.

Sessions Caught Red Handed Lying About Talking to The Russians XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter

During the 2016 presidential campaign, then-Senator Jeff Sessions, spoke twice to Russia’s ambassador to the United States, the Washington Post reported Wednesday evening.

This report follows the resignation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn after it was discovered that he also spoke to the Russian ambassador before the inauguration.

Flynn had discussed the possible removal of sanctions while in contact with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak. This was in clear violation of the Logan Act which prohibits private citizens from negotiating foreign policy with countries that are in dispute with the United States.

Sessions denied communicating with Russia in any capacity. “I’m not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians,” he told the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearing Jan. 10.

Senator Patrick Leahy also asked, “Several of the

President-elect’s nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties. Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?” Sessions simply responded, “No.”

A spokesperson for Sessions claims that nothing misleading took place.

“He was asked during the hearing about communications between Russia and the Trump campaign — not about meetings he took as a senator and a member of the Armed Services Committee,” said Sarah Isgur Flores.

Several members of congress have argued that the Attorney General must recuse himself from any investigation regarding the Trump Campaign’s ties to Russia. The Attorney General is the head of the Justice Department and the FBI, the two agencies that are likely to lead an investigation.

Senator Al Franken told the Washington Post, “It is now clearer than ever that the attorney general cannot, in good faith, oversee an investigation at the Department of Justice and the FBI of the Trump-Russia connection, and he must recuse himself immediately.”

As summer approaches, Pioneer High school will be celebrating its 27th year for their annual Escalante summer math program. The original program began at East Los Angeles College taught

by Jaime Escalante who was famously portrayed in the movie “Stand and Deliver.”

Every summer for the past 26 years Javier Gonzalez, a teacher at Pioneer High School, has proudly taught so many students from different schools, some as young as 7th and 8th graders. The summer math academy program has brought in locally over 500 students.

Because Mr. Gonzalez knew Mr. Escalante when he attended Garfield High School, Mr. Gonzalez took it upon himself to sit in Mr. Escalante’s math classes in the summer time. Amazed

by what he witnessed in the classroom he credits Jaime Escalante as being his mentor and inspiration for starting the program at Pioneer and inspiring him to become a math teacher.

In 2016 the program brought in 12 classes from East Los Angeles College.

After receiving the students, Mr. Gonzalez was able to teach them Geometry, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and math analysis. Students themselves have said that they have truly enjoyed learning math. Katrina Florido, who was part of the graduating class of 2010, went on the graduate from Cal State LA and in 2015 ended up getting hired through the Escalante Program in the summer to work for Mr. Gonzalez.

“This experience prepares you for college and gives you gives you a good foundation for the future,” said Florido.

North Korea Launched Four Missles Drawing Ire From US and China

North Korea launched four banned ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan Monday Mar. 6, drawing immediate condemnation from the United States, South Korea, Japan, and China. The missiles land-

ed in waters that Japan claims as an exclusive economic zone.

The tests follow the North’s tests of intermediate-range missiles in February and two nuclear tests last year. Experts are now concerned with the speed at which the isolated nation is conducting such tests.

“They did a launch a month ago, they’re now launching (more) in 30 days, that’s a third of the time they used to need,” Carl Schuster, Hawaii Pacific University professor and former director of operations at the US Pacific Command’s Joint Intelligence Center told CNN.

Typically, these tests would draw ire only from the United States, South Korea, and Japan, while China would tepidly condemn North Korea.

However, continued provocations provide further justification for the United States to keep troops stationed in South Korea.

The presence of US forces on the peninsula keep tensions with China on a simmer given the proximity of the Korean Peninsula to the Chinese border.

Furthermore, the continued show of force - due to North Korean belligerence - by the United States and South Korea through annual military drills provides a buffer to Chinese influence in the East Asian region.

North Korea has claimed that it has successfully detonated a nuclear warhead capable of being attached to a ballistic missile.

Though some experts doubt the claim and also doubt the capacity of the missiles to reach the United States, a nuclear capable North Korea is highly destabilizing to the East Asian region. It would put a strain on the US-made missile defense system in the region.

The Trump Administration has yet to offer a response to North Korea’s provocations. It is currently embroiled in scandals that have shown White House officials ties to Russia and baseless claims by the president that his predecessor illegally wiretapped his campaign.

President Donald Trump recently signed two bills that plans to encourage more women to join fields in technology, engineering, science and math as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

The first law is called the Inspiring the Next Space Pioneers, Innovators, Researchers, and Explorers Women Act, The Inspire Act for short, will not only have NASA encourage women and girls to go into STEM fields, but also motivate women to go in to aerospace careers according cnet.com. NASA also has three months submit two plan to get staff, like scientists, engineers and astronauts, in front of girls in elementary and secondary

schools studying STEM.

The second law is the Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act which would allow the National Science Foundation to promote entrepreneurial programs that recruit and support women.

At an Oval Office ceremony Trump said it was unfair that only one in four women have a degree that is related to one of these fields as reported by the Chicago Tribune. In a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics despite women making up 47 percent of the workforce in the US they only account for 25.6 percent in computer and mathematical jobs and 15.4 percent in architecture and engineering occupations.

Women also only receive 18 percent of computer science degrees according to cnet.

Trump also talked about the need to have more policies directed towards women in the workforce. “That’s really going to be addressed by my administration over the years with more and more of these bills coming out and address the barriers faced by female entrepreneurs and by those in STEM fields,” he said.

The bills were signed by Trump as he was surrounded by women, including First Lady Melania Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump.

Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Representative Barbara Comstock were also in the room, along with Vice President Mike Pence and Texas Representative Lamar Smith along with others as reported by cnet.com.

The ban was revised after thorough lobbying from the Iraqi government according to a senior US official as reported by CNN. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the update came after review from the State Department to improve the vetting process of Iraq citizens with help of the Iraqi government, though it was not specified on what the improvements are.

“The United States welcomes this kind of close cooperation,” he said about the collaboration. “This revised order will bolster the security of the United States and our

allies.”

Along with the removal Iraq from the list, the new adjustments include stopping Iran, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, and Somalia from receiving visas for 90 days and suspending admission of refugees for 120 days instructing US Officials to improve the investigation measures.

When the order was revealed there was emphasis put on the ban not being about religion. “(The order is) not any way targeted as a Muslim ban ... we want to make sure everyone understands that,” an official said

in a report by CNN. Sessions also added that the order is “lawful and a proper exercise of presidential authority,” just like the first one.

With the new updates on the ban released there were already calling the revision a repeat of the last one. In a report on CNN Andre Carson, Representative of Indiana, tweeted “Here we go again...

Muslim Ban 2.0 #NoBanNoWall”. Along with that Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said in a USA Today article that the only way to fix the ban was to not have one.

Nancy Pelosi, house minority leader, said President Donald Trump’s claims that Barack Obama ordered that he be wiretapped without any evidence is an ‘authoritarian’ tactic. According to Pelosi this is a tactic that Trump has used often, “You make up something and then you have the press write about it, and then you say, ‘everybody’s writing about this charge,’” Pelosi said in an interview with CNN. “It’s a tool of an authoritarian, to just have you always be talking about what you want to be talking about.”

There was also questioning brought on by Pelosi of Trump’s request for Congress to investigate if Obama had him wiretapped. “And then to take it to the Congress and say, ‘you investigate this,’ when he’s been not in favor of Congress investigating anything, including what do the Russians have on Donald Trump, politically, financially, or personally,” Pelosi said in an interview with CNN.

Trump’s request was announced March 5 by White House press secretary Sean Spicer in a statement. “Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling,” Spicer said in a post on Twitter. He then went on to say on Twitter that Trump is requesting that as part of the investigations into

Russian activity that the congressional committees should use their power to investigate if the executive branch misused power in 2016.

“Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted,” Spicer said with no details given on Trump’s request.

In her CNN interview Pelosi also addressed her claim that she never met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, when a 2010 photo showed that Pelosi and other congressional leaders had sat at a table with Kislyak and other Russian officials during a meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev.

Pelosi called that meeting “ completely different” from Attorney General Jeff Sessions meetings with Kislyak, that ended with those meetings provoking members of Congress to have Sessions save himself from investigations connected to Trump’s campaign. Pelosi made it understood that that meeting was not with Kislyak.

We were meeting with the president of Russia,” Pelosi said. “He brought an entourage in with him. He was the one doing the talking.

The question is, have you met with him. No, I haven’t met with him, I met with the president of Russia. Who else was in his entourage? Who knows?”

Youtube is making a move into the cable realm with Youtube TV. Announced February 28, 2017, Youtube will offer a paid service for major tv networks to be released at a later date.

Between now and then, they will be in talks with many tv networks in hopes of expanding the available content.

This service will compete with Sling TV, DirecTV Now and Playstation Vue. Youtube TV does need to clarify some features that these other services provide, but they have made some announcements so far.

Youtube TV will go for only $35 a month with no commitments. Anyone can cancel at anytime. Its competitors can do the same with similar channels, but not all deals have been confirmed with Youtube. A leg up from its competitors, however, is that Youtube TV grants access to six users. None of its competitors provide as

much with only Playstation Vue coming close with five.

However, only three simultaneous streams can be played at once per account. As limiting as this is, every other service provides the same or less with only Playstation Vue providing five.

They have stated that they will have “a cloud DVR, with no storage limits.” This means that a customer can record and save shows onto their account with no limits.

Any show provided can be saved and watched at any time with an internet connection. The only competitor that has a DVR feature is Playstation Vue, but it only holds shows for 28 days.

Another feature with Youtube TV is that it will have all Youtube and Youtube Red related content provided with the service. This could link into the shows in that after a user finishes a show they may want to watch reviews related to the episode they had just finished. This is a nice tie in to their platform in terms of expanding.

The TV networks cur-

rently on board include: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, and many others including regional networks. It is expected to see this list expand in the coming months. All the shows provided can be viewed through Chromecast, Google

Home, desktops, laptops and all mobile devices. However, Youtube TV will only be available in select cities in the United States while other services are available nationwide.

Many meticulous details

have yet to be shared and more could be announced in the coming months. There is a lot to be discussed, but as of right now this is a good start for Youtube TV.

Users Fear Social Media is Making Them Ill, But They Still Can’t Stop DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

A new survey from the American Psychological Association, APA, shows that nearly half of millennials fear that social media has a negative effect on their mental and physical health as reported by The Independent.

The new survey found about 90 percent of people aged 18 to 29 were using social media, showing an increase from the 12 percent in 2005.

“Technology has improved life for many Americans, and nearly half of this country’s adults say they can’t imagine life without their smartphones,” reported the survey. The survey also revealed that 99 percent of adults own an electronic device, including televisions, around 86 percent own a computer, 55 percent own a tablet and 74 percent own an internet-connected smartphone.

The social media site most visited was Facebook

with 79 percent of adults using it last year, Instagram came in second with 32 percent, then Pinterest and LinkedIn tied third with 29 percent and Twitter came in fourth with 24 percent.

“At the same time, numerous studies have described consequences of technology use, including negative impacts on physical and mental health,” the study continued with.

Also many millennials aged between 18 to 37 were reported as being concerned

by how much time they spend on social media. “Almost half (48 per cent) worry about the negative effects of social media on their physical and mental health,” the report said.

The APA also identified a group of people who constantly checked social media and other messaging applications and the report found these ‘constant checkers’ had higher stress levels than others in their peer group.

“For some, constant checking itself can be a stressful act.

Constant checkers are more likely to say that constantly checking devices is a stressful aspect of technology, compared to non-constant checkers (29 per cent vs. 24 per cent, respectively),” the report said.

Despite around 65 percent of Americans agreeing taking a break from social media was important, only 28 percent of those who agreed with the idea actually reported doing it.

Smart cities are more responsive to citizens and help reduce environmental impact. Not only are they more cost effective but they are safer as well. These cities make the residents more connected to their community

and to each other. Technology can help save lives, make society more efficient, and deliver a better quality of life for the emerging leaders of the next generation.

With population size growing, it is important to utilize technology to help improve transportation. Larger populations impact the flow of traffic. With more effective and sensitive traffic signals, smart cities can improve the quality of commute time.

AT&T is helping transportation efforts by providing

insight and technologies to improve both efficiency and responsiveness in street lights. By installing traffic monitoring cameras and smart signals its allows a more convenient manage flow by modifying signal time in real time.

Quality of life is often connected to how safe an individual feels in their environment. AT&T retrofitted existing lighting systems with smart LED lighting systems which provides better safety for residents. Called

based technology management platforms enable police to access video footage from security cameras from anywhere. The source of the system is AT&T’s LTE mobility network which streams all of the security footage. Lighting upgrades along with real time monitoring help the residents feel safer in their homes and communities.

AT&T is also installing free wifi in community centers so that children have access to the evolving technology. Allowing children to

have these resources helps them develop more competitive skills for the future.

Smart cities not only improve the quality of life but they also enable better productivity for children and adults.

They are pushing forward the improvements in technology to impacted cities. With improvements in technology cities can resolve issues such as public safety and transportation with ease.

El Paisano’s Editor in Chief, Diego Crespo, recently took time off his very busy schedule to sit down for a quick interview. Crespo, who is in the middle of his second semester as EiC has been glued to the computer screen since the first day of class this past Fall.

“I felt honored and concerned because it’s a big responsibility, and I don’t feel I’ve always been the most responsible person around,” said Crespo when asked about his feelings on becoming EiC.

The transition of advisors was an added stress, as the El Paisano newsroom was renovated not just aesthetically, but the dynamic of its staff as well.

“The change is exciting because Professor Carrera brings a more energetic and contemporary take on the class and the industry,” said Crespo, “It wasn’t an easy change, but nothing worth having comes easy.”

Crespo is a long time writer, his constant movie

reviews on letterbox show his eternal love not just for writing, but also films.

“Iron Man 3 was my first movie review that I posted. I had to do IM3, the discourse alone drove me.”

With so many issues of the newspaper out, and with Crespo in charge of the layout for every single one of them, it was difficult not to ask him the typical question: Which cover is your favorite?

“Oh, the Día de los Muer-

tos cover, by far. That sugar skull made of names of the community’s deceased loved ones is one of my proudest moments,” said Crespo, “it took me about a week to make.”

It isn’t only during the layout of the newspaper that Crespo shows his commitment, he also watches and reviews about three movies per week. Of course, when Roger Ebert and Alicia Malone are your favorite film reporters,

it’s not hard to to see why Crespo is the way he is.

Crespo’s advice for aspiring journalists, would be “to get your feet into the water and just do it, get the experience.” One of Crespo’s long term goals would be to professionally cover Arts and Entertainment.

“It wasn’t an easy change, but nothing worth having comes easy.”

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT ‘Yoda’s Secret War’ unveils Yoda’s influence on Luke before ‘Empire’

The latest issue in the main “Star Wars” series of Marvel comics draws closer to concluding Yoda’s story arc while simultaneously setting up Luke Skywalker’s.

And conveniently, Yoda’s arc, which took place decades ago, has a direct influence on Skywalker’s. Yoda’s story has been pulled straight from the journal of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and is the journal that Skywalker has been reading while traveling throughout the galaxy.

Concluded in the issue is Yoda’s training with Garro; the young boy he found dwelling inside the heart of the mountain. The same mountain that the planet’s inhabitants fear because of the unknown secrets at its core. With Garro’s help and

days of deep-force meditation, Yoda manages to awaken the mountain that once lived among others of its kind; thus, discovering the mountain’s “secret.” The secret being that the mountain is a living being. Garro spills the mountain’s secret to the Rockhawkers, the same group that had abandoned him in the past for being too weak in combat, and leaves Yoda behind, telling him to leave the planet.

Yoda, knowing the Rockhawker’s intentions with the secret of the mountain aren’t good, returns to train the Muckwhackers, the band of children that has been at war with the Rockhawkers, for a completely different kind of war.

Yoda’s story is by far one of the most unique in the “Star Wars” canonical universe right now. Never before have we seen such a strange and relatively unknown part of the galaxy in canon. Writer Jason Aaron nails Yoda’s dialogue, something that has never been easy to do (even some of Yoda’s dialogue in the prequel films is cringe-inducing.) Aaron writes Yoda’s twisted dialogue in a way that makes it feel both natural and familiar.

Penciller Salvador Larroca’s art direction gives us a different but effective perspective on Yoda. Yoda is indeed a small character, but in this comic, he is (most of the time) portrayed as an equal in comparison to his enemies; always without fear and as

courageous as ever. Larroca drew Yoda and seemingly disregarded height differences in certain frames. A clever way to show the Jedi master’s dominance in situations.

This issue didn’t give us any huge story revelations or epic battles; it simply set up the next issue. However, some very noteworthy things happened in this issue that are unique to a “Star Wars” story.

As mentioned before, Yoda knew the Rockhawker’s intentions with the mountain’s secret weren’t going to bring any sort of peace to their world or their war. And he was right. The Rockhawkers used the dark side of the

force to fill the mountain’s newly awakened mind with anger and thoughts of revenge. Revenge to the humans who exterminated the rest of it’s kind. Yoda, realizing the Rockhawkers had taken control of the mountain in order to destroy the Muckwhackers, courageously sets off to face the now humanoid being that towers over him in a true “size matters not” moment.

Details aren’t given as to how the encounter with Yoda and the mountain unfolded.

All we know is that Skywalker, after reading the story told in Kenobi’s journal entry, traveled to the same planet

Yoda faced the mountain on, only to discover it’s seemingly lifeless body and the last remnant of the Rockhawkers.

If it weren’t for it’s on-par writing, unique storyline, and homage to an iconic character, the issue would’ve been disappointing. Some of the story took too long to fleshout, but the revelations in this issue make it worthwhile. And seeing Yoda face the mountain without a hint of fear is about as iconic as his character can get. I’m excited to see how Skywalker’s encounter with the last Rockhawker will tie-in with Yoda’s story in the next issue.

I would break up someone in person because I have respect towards my significant other.

If I were to do

this through text it would show less respect.

It would be faceto-face, I would bring out the points that I don’t like about that person, why I think it’s not working out.

You just need to

think about how it’s healthier for both of us to actually let go of the relationship instead of trying to build something that’s no longer

there.

I’ve used this method before, You wait until Wednesday because then you don’t ruin the entire week and you don’t ruin the weekend you have enough of a buffer period so that way you don’t ruin their weekend and you’re

not responsible for that.

You approach them in person, any other way would be chicken shit.

You’re like “Hey, explain why it’s not working out” or like “Hey I don’t see this relationship really going anywhere just

figured I’d like you know before you waste more time with me because you deserve better than that”.

You always say “You deserve better than that” because then they feel a little bit better.

Hi! I’ve met a lot of good people here at Rio and made some really good friends. Most of my friends and I are all transferring and will all be going separate our separate ways in the fall. Realizing this, I’m really going to miss them and I’m wondering if i should of been friends with them at all. My question is: whats the point of becoming good friends and becoming attached to people who are temporary?

ANSWER:

That’s a really good question and one that I’ve actually thought about myself.

I suppose its really all apart of the human experience. No matter what idea you may or may not have about the afterlife the general consensus is that our existence on this plane of existence is incredibly short.

Especially when com

paring your life to the entirety of the human race, not even thinking about the history of the earth.

Getting to know new people and all of these experiences are all part of the human experience.

As for the concept of temporary people, in a way they are a good thing. Every person we meet can develop your character in some way, and if someone turns out

to be “temporary“ then maybe its a good thing that they aren’t in your life anymore.

If a person really matters to you, or you really matter to them, then there will be effort made in trying to be friends after gaining some distance.

SPORTS Roadrunners baseball team start off conference with a win and a loss against Cerritos College Rio Hondo College will host Los Angeles Harbor College Mar. 9

Making their debut in the South Coast Conference, the Rio Hondo baseball team made an early name for themselves by winning their first game against the Cerritos College Falcons by a score of 4-1.

After losing a game where the Roadrunners led going into the top of the ninth against Oxnard College Feb. 24, a six day rest proved to be beneficial for the team heading into the game against the Falcons.

Playing the first game of the series at home in The Jungle Mar. 2, the Falcons struck early in the second inning, as Roadrunner centerfielder Nick Ybarra committed an error, allowing Rolando Nichols to score for a 1-0 lead for Cerritos.

Despite the error, Ybarra helped lead the Roadrunners to victory going two for four with three RBI’s improving Rio Hondo’s overall record to 9-4 and 1-0 in conference while Cerritos College fell to an overall record of 5-11 and 0-1 in conference.

Rio would respond in the fifth inning with Alex Rodriguez getting an RBI single that brought home Tony Rosario to make it a 1-1 game.

Ybarra would redeem his earlier mistake with a tworun single that brought in Rodriguez and Marcos Rivas to make it a 3-1 game at the bottom of the fifth inning.

Cerritos nearly had a chance to respond in the following inning with a series of plays that had the bases loaded and a pitching change by Rio Hondo with one out to go.

The Falcons could not capitalize on Rio’s relief pitcher and left three players on bases with hopes of a comeback fading.

The Roadrunners added one more run to their total in the seventh inning, when Ybarra had an RBI double that brought home Christian Valdez to make it a 4-1 game.

The pitching unit for Rio did its job as starting pitcher Brady Carlson only allowed one run and four hits in five innings and relief pitchers Jake Gaudet and Anthony Franco finished the rest of the game without any runs securing the Roadrunners

opener against the Falcons.

Rio Hondo continued their two-game series on the road at Cerritos College Mar. 4, with the Roadrunners opening the scoring in the top of the third inning as Danny Marquez reached on an error by third basemen.

Gabe Chavez then advanced to second base then to third on another error by second baseman and made it home safely to open the scoreboard for the Roadrunners.

Cerritos College didn’t respond until the bottom of the seventh inning, with Nichols singling down right field getting an RBI as Dominic Bravo scored to equalize the game. Cerritos then overtook Rio Hondo when Jesus Mercado grounded out to the pitcher but managed to get an RBI as Nichols made it home safely to make it a 2-1 game for the Falcons.

The Roadrunners now dropped their overall record to 9-5 with a conference record of 1-1 as they next look to host L.A. Harbor Mar. 7 followed by an away game Mar. 9.

The Rio Hondo College Lady Roadrunners softball team travelled to Cerritos College for an interdivision game against the Falcons Mar. 2, in a game that had very few highlights for Rio as the team lost 14-4 dropping them to a 4-7 overall record.

Cerritos College dominated the game against Rio Hondo, totaling 13 hits against Sophomore pitcher, Brenae Martinez, as early as the first inning giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead against the Lady Roadrunners.

Kylee Brown singled down the infield line for an RBI as teammate Kimberly Olivas scored the first run for her side. Next up, Briana Lopez reached on a fielder’s choice while Anika Ortiz was tagged out at second, fol-

lowed by Brown scoring to make it a 2-0 game early on.

The Falcons kept their pressure on Rio, with Desiree Flores doubling to left center with an RBI as Rain Vega advanced to third base leaving Lopez to score another run.

By the top of the second inning it was already a 3-0 game for Cerritos, and Rio Hondo failed to respond at bat. In the bottom of the second inning, Jissel Caballero hit a homerun for the Falcons before the team exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The third inning remained scoreless for both sides, as Rio Hondo continued to look for a way to get back into the game before they got swept by their opponents. With the Lady Roadrunners struggling, the top of the fourth inning saw the bases loaded for Rio with two

outs, setting up Alicia Olivias two-run single that landed Karina Gomez and Tiana Rodriguez home safely to make it a 4-2 game.

Cerritos responded fiercely, with Lopez singling up the middle with two RBI’s as Brown and Caballero scored.

Lesley Briseno then singled to left center with two RBI’s, allowing Vega and Tatyana Peko to score making it a 8-2 game right when it appeared as though Rio Hondo might have a chance to get back into the game.

With the Falcons’ momentum in full force, Olivas singled to left center and advanced to second base with an RBI as Emma Wolff advanced to third, leaving Briseno to score.

Next up, Caballero singled to left field with two RBI’s and advanced to second base on a throwing error

by Rio’s infield, allowing Olivas and Wolff to each score another run making it a 11-2 game for the Falcons.

With time running out for the Lady Roadrunners, the team was able to pick up two runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning to try and close the gap before the Falcons continued to widen it.

The top of the fifth inning saw Rodriguez walked as Serina Castrellon advanced to second base with

Jelissa Castanon advancing to third as Sarah Hauffen Salgado scored. Next up, Karina Gomez reached on a fielder’s choice with one RBI while Rodriguez advanced to second, but Castrellon was tagged out at third and Castanon scored making it an 11-4 game as the Falcons lined up for the bottom of the sixth.

Cabal doubled to left field with three RBI’s allowing Olivas, Wolff, and Briseno to score making it a 14-4 game in favor of Cerritos College.
