El Monte Restaurants Vandalized for the Third Time in Four Months

For the third time in four months, Menchies, at the Santa Fe Trail Plaza in El Monte, CA, was broken into Sunday evening. Also victim of the forced entry was their neighbor Flame Broiler.

Signs that read “Do Not Touch: Fresh Glass” were posted on the doors of both restaurants.

Rene (he did not give his last name), the manager of Menchie’s was cautious of El Paisano staff being on the scene given the recency of the break in.

“We have surveillance cameras. They showed a white car pulling up, breaking in, and driving off,” said the manager. “This is the third time in four months. It has to be the same people.”

Flame Broiler was backed up with customers due to the lunch hour. The manager was unavailable for comment.

The Santa Fe Trail Plaza’s first businesses opened before the 2015 holiday season. With Superior Grocers’ and Petco anchoring the shopping plaza, the 15-acre site also hosts Menchies, Flame Broiler, Wing Stop, and Chipotle. The plaza is slated for a 60,000-foot expansion some time in 2017.

Menchies and Flame Broiler opened nine months ago. The frequency of the break-ins have been alarming for customers. Upon arriving on the scene, El Paisano photographer, Alexis Rodriguez drew suspicion from customers. They alerted the manager once Rodriguez began taking pictures.

“The break in happened last night. And then

we have someone showing up and taking pictures of the front of the store. We’re just concerned, you know,” Rene told El Paisano.

The Santa Fe Trail Plaza is part of the city’s efforts to revitalize the local economy. Construction has begun on El Monte Gateway, a transit-oriented community that could help transform the city into a national model of urban planning.

Further south on Santa Anita Boulevard, the renovated El Monte Bus Station represents the city’s commitment to being a regional hub of transportation.

In 2015, there were 461 reported burglaries in El Monte, according to the FBI’s uniform crime reports.

Rio Hondo Blood Drive has the Potential to Save Over 100 Lives ADAM CALLEJA Reporter

The American Red Cross hosted a blood drive at Rio Hondo College from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students were given the opportunity to donate blood at the blood-mobile that was located on the breezeway in the business building.

blood takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The first step to register and show an ID. In the second step, donators will answer some questions during a private and confidential interview about their health history and places you have traveled. Temperature, pulse, and blood pressure is checked giving the donors a mini-physical.

The third step is the actual donation that takes

about 8-10 minutes. The process is safe and sterile.

The fourth step is where the donors rest and are provided with juice and cookies. They are free to leave after resting for 10-15 minutes.

“This is my fifth or sixth time donating blood,” stated donor Jesse Granados as he enjoyed his refreshments in the blood-mobile.

blood however the drive was able to collect 39 units. If all all the blood passed Rio Hondo would help over 117 lives in the community according Jacquee Herrera Account Manager in the Donor Recruitment of the Red Cross.

“It’s a rush, I like the feeling of getting blood drawn,” asserted donor Danny Celiz, “I know it goes to a good cause.”

Trump Bans Major Students Take Media Outlets From Initiative in Financing Press Gaggle Their Future

The Trump administration blocked major news outlets on Friday, February 24, from attending a press gaggle that day. CNN, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Politico, BuzzFeed, and the Guardian, were all barred from entering the press event after being told by officials reported by CNN.

A press gaggle is an informal briefing that is different from a briefing and a conference involving usually a small amount of reporters by the White House Press Secretary that is on record but not on film.

Originally the gaggle was briefing planned to be on briefing but was changed by the White House to instead occur at later time that day off camera. The press gaggle occurred in the White House Press Secretary and Communications Director’s office belonging to Sean Michael Spicer.

News organizations that were heavily criticized President Trump NY Times, LA Times, CNN were seemingly

void of the list while organizations NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox News were allowed in.

Conservative outlets like the Breitbart News, The Washington Times and One America News Network were in the press pool and allowed to partake in the press gaggle.

Because of who was in attendance regarding what news outlets were there covering, all information from the event was shared.

The New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet stated, “nothing like this has ever happened at the White House in our long history of covering multiple administrations of different parties”.

CNN’s Sara Murray went on air to discuss her accounts of what happened reporting that CNN put their name on the list for the press gaggle and was stopped by White House Staff.

“Now, normally, if you were going to do something like this — an extended gaggle, off camera — you would have one person from each news outlet. As you know, we have multiple people from CNN here every day. So, if you’re going to do something beyond a pool, which is sort of the smallest group of reporters that then disseminates the information, you

would have one person from every news outlet.”

“When you see the chyrons on CNN and the headlines and their story making it appear as though we did something wrong or nefarious, we wanted to make sure that we set the record straight.

Spicer responded with to the multiple questions asked by reported on why CNN among others are were not in the press pool for the gaggle.

Both Associated Press and Time Magazine were allowed into the press briefing but choose to stand in protest against the banning of other news outlets and decided to not attend the press gaggle.

This is unusual break from protocol in light of was said at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) the very same day. President Trump spoke at CPAC calling news fake news vowing action against “fake news”.

“The fake news is the enemy of the people and they are, they are the enemy of the people. I’m against the people that make up stories and make up sources, they shouldn’t be allowed to use sources unless they use somebody’s name.”

A loan workshop discussing subsidized and unsubsidized loans was hosted at Rio Hondo College Wednesday, Feb. 22, for students interested in finding out about the different types of loans available to them, the loan application process, and other loan information.

Corinna Jaramillo, Senior Financial Aid Assistant at Rio Hondo and host of the workshop, talked to students about the differences between subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans, and the amount of money the two loans offer to students.

“A subsidized loan will not include interest while your are in school because the government will pay for it, but the unsubsidized does,” Jaramillo said. “Subsidized loans are for undergraduate students who demonstrate the financial need until you graduate, drop below six units, or reach your maximum subsidy eligibility,” she explained.

According to Jaramillo, first year students (29 units or less) can acquire a total amount of $3500 in subsidized loans for an academic year; unsubsidized students can receive $6000 for the academic year.

Jaramillo also talked about the steps students would need to take before submitting their loan applications; the first step being the completion of the Master Promissory Note.

“The master promissory note is a legal document in

which you promise to repay your loans...It also explains your terms and conditions of a student loan,” Jaramillo stated.

The other prerequisite to the loan application is the completion of entrance counseling.

“This will ensure that you understand your rights and responsibility as a student loan borrower,” Jaramillo said.

To conclude the workshop, Jaramillo reminded students about the responsibilities that come with taking out these loans.

“It’s a financial contract that has to be payed back with interest even if you don’t finish your degree. Be sure that you limit the loan amounts you borrow only to what you require to complete your program of study,” Jaramillo explained.

Avery Craig, a Rio Hondo student, shared his thoughts on the workshop,

“I think every student, even if you’re going to get a loan or not, should sit through this workshop… If you’re going to go to a 2-year college [or] 4-year university I think this is a vital workshop.”

Jaramillo thought the workshop was important because “a lot of students don’t know the new rules that are coming out so, with the new rules, [and] if they are transferring, this helps them and gives them knowledge of how much they have to borrow once they do transfer.”

US Appeals Court Upholds Maryland’s Ban On “Weapons Of War”

In a 10-4 ruling, the 4th U.S Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Maryland’s ban on assault rifles Tuesday, Feb. 21 in Richmond, Va.

The majority ruled that gun owners are not protected under the Constitution to possess “weapons of war,” ac-

cording to court documents.

The law in question was the Firearm Safety Act of 2013 that was passed in Maryland in response to the massacre in Newton, Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary where twenty school children and six adult staff members were murdered.

“Put simply, we have no power to extend Second

Amendment protections to weapons of war,” Judge Robert King wrote in the court’s majority opinion.

The court drew from precedent in the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller where the majority opinion determined that Second Amendment rights were not absolute. In that case, the nation’s highest court ruled that

“it is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose,” allowing states to impose limits on what weapons were available for purchase.

Regarding Maryland’s law, the court’s dissenting opinion, written by Judge William Traxler, argued that the majority had “gone to greater lengths than any other court to eviscerate the constitutionally guaranteed right to keep and bear arms.

“For a law-abiding citizen who, for whatever reason, chooses to protect his home with a semi-automatic rifle instead of a semi-automatic handgun, Maryland’s law clearly imposes a significant burden on the exercise of the right to arm oneself at home, and it should at least be subject to strict scrutiny review before it is allowed to stand,” Traxler continued.

Naturally, both sides of the gun control debate entrenched themselves in response to the court’s decision.

The National Rifle Association, the largest lobbying group of gun owners in the United States, responded to the court’s ruling. The ruling “clearly ignores the Supreme Court’s guidance from District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment protects arms that are `in common use at the time for lawful purposes like self-defense,”’ argued Jennifer Baker, spokeswoman of the NRA.

Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence praised the decision and the court. They viewed it as “overwhelming proof that reasonable measures to prevent gun violence are constitutional.

Maryland’s law needs to become a national model of evidence-based policies that will reduce gun violence,” said Elizabeth Banach, executive director of the group.

It remains to be seen if this case will reach the Supreme Court.

Tom Perez Elected as New DNC Chair

The Democrats have now rallied behind new leadership around Tom Perez, hoping to guide the pary towards a brighter future.

Tom Perez was elected as the new chairperson for the Democratic National Committee Sunday, Feb. 25 in Atlanta, GA. He defeated Keith Ellison, a US Representative from Minnesota, by 35 votes. He is the first Latino to chair the Democratic Nation-

al Committee.

The election of the DNC chair mirrored the intraparty struggle that took place during the 2016 Democratic Primary where Hillary Clinton represented the establishment Democrats and Bernie Sanders was the voice of the more progressive wing of the party.

Regarding the DNC chair-

manship, Tom Perez, who was the former Labor Secretary under Barack Obama as well as a former Assistant Attorney General under the former president. In that time, he has long championed voting rights, labor unions, and the needs of consumers.

His ties to the former administration and his long work in Democratic state

politics branded him as the “establishment” candidate despite being on the national stage for only eight years.

Ellison, the other candidate on the ballot, received endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Outgoing Senate Minority Leader, Harry Reid, also endorsed Ellison.

Ellison, the representative from Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, has long been a liberal stalwart in Congress. Elected to the House of Representatives in 2006, Ellison has a strong pro-choice voting record, has supported normalizing relations between Iran and the United States, and is a strong supporter of LGBT rights.

Despite the fact that Perez had been considered the establishment candidate, both men are Democrats that have been chastised by Republicans for leaning too far to the left.

Soon after winning the chairmanship, in a show of party unity, Perez offered Ellison the position of Deputy

Chairman. Ellison graciously accepted and urged his supporters to rally behind Perez, “We don’t have the luxury, folks, to walk out of this room divided. We don’t have that luxury, and I just want to say to you that it’s my honor to serve this party under Chairman Perez.”

Speaking to the Committee, Perez promised strength in unity. “You know, our unity as a party is our greatest strength. And it’s his worst nightmare,” referring to President Trump. He has been a vocal opponent against the president’s policies and has vowed to stand up to the president even if it means becoming the “party of no,” according to a report in Time.

With the DNC leadership battle resolved, the party is entering a new era. The progressive wing of the party has flexed its collective muscles once more. Perez has promised to return to a grassroots effort in all 50 states and has also promised to refrain from taking money from federal lobbyists.

A Response to 11-29-16 Castro Article PROFESSOR J. JOAQUIN DURAN

Regarding Jake Laurell’s November 29, 2016 article, “Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro Dead at 90,” some items require clarification and correction.

In a situation where Cuba remained under constant threat of subversion, attack or invasion, a firm hand was needed in view of hostile actions, like the CIA-sponsored blowing up of the French freighter La Coubre on March 4, 1960 killing 100 people, mostly stevedores, soldiers and sailors. Then in October, 1976, a civilian Cubana Airlines jet carrying athletes from Barbados to Cuba was blown up in mid air,

killing all 73 passengers and crew members. The perpetrators of this crime, Cuban “exiles” all, remain scot free and living comfortably in Miami. Mr. Laurell mentions the Bay of Pigs invasion in April, 1961. But contrary to his statements, there was no uprising inside Cuba during this invasion, a fact contributing to its ultimate failure and defeat. Neither did “firing squads and gulags,” become a permanent feature in Cuban life. Firing squads were used during the first three years of revolution’s triumph, first to deal justice to Fulgencio Batista’s torturers and killers who in 1958 alone murdered some 20,000 Cuban civilians, mostly students protesting or opposed to Batista’s regime, and secondly to purge recal-

citrant elements of the old deposed regime’s military and police forces posing an existential threat to the new order. As for “gulags,” the closest thing Cuba had was one camp called Guanacahabibes to rehabilitate workers from the Ministry of Industries caught pilfering, embezzling or otherwise improperly enriching themselves at the Ministry’s expense. The camp, however, became highly controversial and was eventually shut down in 1965. All Cuban detainees are handled through the conventional penal system.

Lastly, Mr. Laurell says, “Under Obama, the US had lifted its 54-year-long trade embargo against the island nation.” This is wrong: the embargo still remains in

force. What has been lifted, and only partially are the total ban on travel to Cuba

by US citizens and some restrictions on the US tourist industry doing business in Cuba. But while this embargo remains in force, Cuba’s economic situation will remain difficult, as the embargo has entailed more than just cutting off all US trade with Cuba, but also includes impeding trade with third countries, and also blocking Cuba’s access to credit or loans from international financial institutions.

Mr. Laurell rightly cites key gains Cuba’s socialist revolution has achieved – universal access to vital social services, including worldclass education and medical care, along with “near-uni-

versal literacy” – all credit to Castro’s leadership, and all which Cuba preserves despite many challenges.

We appreciate our reader’s responses and comments.

Fidel Castro passed away Friday, Nov. 25. Castro’s brother and current president of Cuba, Raul Castro, announced his death Friday on Cuban television. No cause of death is known, but he had been in poor health since 2008.

Castro led the Cuban Revolution and declared himself leader after achieving victory. As a communist state, Castro established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union in 1961 and repelled an uprising during the US-backed Bay of Pigs invasion in the same year.

Cuban-US relations, through Russian proxy, reached a fever pitch during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

Castro was sworn into office of the prime minister in 1959 and maintained this position until 1976 when Cuba ratified its constitution.

He became Cuba’s president and maintained this position until 2008, when his brother took over as head of the state.

The infamous leader of Cuba was both hero and villain when it came to the rule of his people and abroad.

The former dictator fervently suppressed any political opposition with totalitarian policies. Castro used firing squads and gulags during his rule. Thousands fled to the United States in exile.

assisted failed rebellions of spreading communism to other Latin American countries. His support helped the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola from 1975 to 1989, and successfully helped repel the Somali invasion of Ethiopia in 1978.

Though a communist, the ideology Castro implemented socialist policies for all of Cuba. He expanded social services to all classes in Cuban society on an equal basis and made education and medical programs free for anyone. Under his rule, Cuba achieved near-universal literacy.

Relations between Cuba and the United States warmed when President Obama talked of reopening a U.S. embassy in Havana, Cuba. Obama said in a statement that the past decades of this “outdated approach” has floundered and failed in the regards of advancing our interests. Under Obama, the US had lifted its 54-year-long trade embargo against the island nation.

President-elect Trump and his transition team have stated dissatisfaction towards Castro and his regime. Trump took to Twitter jubilantly stating “Fidel Castro is Dead!” and “Today, the world

marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades.”

“Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty, and the denial of fundamental human rights. While Cuba remains a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they so richly deserve,” the president-elect continued through Twitter.

Mike Pence also ex-

pressed his view through social media, “The tyrant #Castro is dead. New hope dawns. We will stand with the oppressed Cuban people for a free and democratic Cuba. Viva Cuba Libre!,” the Vice President-elect shared on Twitter.

In an interview with CBS4, Trump criticized Obama’s efforts in renewing relations with Cuba calling it a “very weak agreement.”

Trump also stated to CNN that it was “[Okay] to bring Cuba back into the fold.”

Netflix is a staple when it comes to online streaming services. Other services try to compete and adapt the Netflix model, but none are as popular. Netflix stands out considerably thanks to their original series on top of the seemingly endless library of movies and tv shows.

However, some may find the home page to be limiting due to Netflix’s algorithm to

prefered content. This can be bypassed with specific codes linking to specific genres held within the Netflix servers.

These genres vary quite drastically as there are the typical action/adventure going down to gay/lesbian dramas. There seems to be content for everyone as the list is expansive.

A study shows that creativity is not just linked to the right side of the brain, but instead, how well the two sides communicate with each other as reported by medicalxpress.com. The researchers found that more creative people had notably more connections between the left and right hemisphere than less creative people.

ESL hosts another Intel Extreme Masters tournament in Katowice starting off the 2017 year with League of Legends first international tournament. The tournament format had a best of one group stage with best of threes in all consecutive matches. This is not a major event, but it does show how well the meta of different regions fare against international competition. The event spans two weekends starting from February 25 and ending March 5. The first weekend showcases the LoL scene while the second weekend has the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive taking centerstage.

The LoL weekend of the tournament ended beautifully with the Taiwanese team Flash Wolves coming out on top. Eight teams competed in this tournament, coming from various regions of the world. Flash Wolves come

analyze the white matter of 68 different brain regions.

The research was done with healthy college-age students who went through testing using an MRI technique called diffusion tensor imaging, which allowed researchers to follow the brain’s white matter by following the water moving through it according to medicalxpress.com. Computers using that information then created a 3-D map for the wiring diagrams of the brain.

Neuroscientist Rex Jung of the University of New Mexico led a team that then collected the MRI data and conducted tests on the volunteers to assess their creativity. One test

asked participants to draw as many geometric shapes as they could in five minutes while another asked the people to list as many uses as they could for everyday items such as a brick or paperclip.

These mainly did measures for a type of problem-solving called “divergent thinking,” which is the ability to come up with many solutions to a question.

The team also gave out a survey about participants’ achievements in 10 areas, including the visual arts, music, creative writing, dance, cooking, and science. The results to the test were then used to create a composite creativity score for each per-

son while the computer went through the data and identify differences in brain structure.

The results showed that those who scored in the top 15 percentile of the creativity score had more connections between the right and left brain than those who scored in the bottom 15 percentile.

It was also found there are no statistical differences between men or women, or in connectivity within hemispheres. Most differences were found in the frontal lobe of the brain.

Based on brain structure Dunson notes the approach might be able to predict how likely a person will be creative. “Maybe by scanning a

from the League of Legends Masters Series in Taiwan, one of the four major regions in LoL, as well as Hong Kong Esports. Teams from the League of Legends Champions Korea league also sent two participants in Rox Tigers, and Kongdoo Monster. In the western front, European League of Legends Championship Series has sent three teams; Unicorns of Love, H2K-Gaming, and G2 Esports. The final team to round out the bunch is M19, the brazilian wildcard team.

Flash Wolves is currently sitting on top of their region sitting at first with an undefeated record while Hong Kong Esports is struggling near the bottom. Rox and Kongdoo are also struggling in the LCK as two of the bottom three teams. H2K and G2, however, are top of their groups in EU LCS while UoL are sitting middle of the pack.

M19 is the core of the old Albus Nox Luna lineup which competed during worlds, but

do not seem to be much of a competition at this tournament.

With two top EU LCS teams playing in this tournament, many consider H2K and G2 to win the whole thing. However, considering how dominating a performance LCK teams were during worlds, nobody is taking these lesser teams easy pickings. The other factor is Flash Wolves. Known as the “korea killers,” Flash Wolves have much to prove in an international tournament like this. This tournament will showcase two different metas that have developed in this current split. The western style of poke/snowball versus the tank/teamfight style in the east.

The Asian teams started strong as they knocked all the European teams to the lower bracket with Rox and Flash Wolves leading the way.

They were resilient, however, as H2K and G2 fought their way back into the semis. They

were quite shaken by the different meta and have opted to adopt the Asian meta, or even going back to the sivir comp of old. G2 were able to get past Rox in the semis, but gave up the poke meta in this series as they advanced to the finals.

In the other bracket, H2K played Flash Wolves in a very close series that could’ve gone either way.

H2K were on the front foot for the majority of the series, but Flash Wolves were able to hold out until their power could kick in. In the first two games, both teams played a similar teamfight heavy meta with game two having H2K pushing Flash Wolves to the edge. This is where the veteran smarts come into play as Flash Wolves are able to bait H2K into exhausting their resources and exposing their weaknesses. Flash Wolves capitalize and take the game.

It ended in a clean 2-0 with Flash Wolves winning their first international tournament. With bigger international tournaments coming up, there is a lot to be taken from this tournament by all regions. Flash Wolves, however, will relish their victory as they return to LMS number one in Katowice and in Taiwan.

Bitter Apple INK Press is a young and growing custom apparel company based out of ­Buena Park, CA. The company was founded in October 2016 and has since served multiple Southern California communities.

Bitter Apple prints custom made t-shirts, sweaters and joggers. The company has worked with college clubs that include Rio Hondo, East Los Angeles Community College, and Pasadena City College.

Twenty-three year old Franco Gonzalez, Director of Sales and co-founder of Bitter Apple, said that the company can identify with many college communities; “one of our employees goes to Rio Hondo,” said Gonzalez, “we can relate to being on a budget.”

Because the employees of the company are young and have been or are in college, they know what it is to have a tight budget, which is why they offer reasonable prices without a compromise in product quality.

Bitter Apple has worked with the Nursing Club at Rio Hondo, providing them with

custom made t-shirts and even helped the club raise funds. “It was a great experience working with them, the prices are reasonable, the quality is great and the turnaround time was quick,” said Cindy Almaguer, TELACU/WMMC Nurse Scholar, “everyone was impressed and were actually about to place

another order with them next week.”

Bitter Apple also sponsored El Paisano Newspaper, with custom made t-shirts for their competition in Fall 2016 hosted by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges.

“The shirts were great, they showed how close of a team we were at competition, even if we were competing separately” said Diego Crespo, editor in chief of El Paisano, “I can’t wait to get more from them this semester.”

Although Bitter Apple is currently a company that works with other companies that provide them with clients, they wish to build their own client list.

Gonzalez explained that the company wishes to have close relationships with its clients, “we are willing to send representatives to discuss pricing and design,” said Gonza-

We live in a society where beauty is everywhere and an achieved look is important. Commercials and ads for the newest beauty products are everywhere.

The beauty practice of botox and feminism goes hand in hand, according to an article published by Allure Magazine. Lately there has been a lot of uproar surrounding the topics of women’s rights and equal wages.

Women are statistically making less and paying more for products and services. There is something called “the pink tax,” which refers to the extra amount women pay for products and services.

Numerous studies have proved that items marketed to women cost more and contain less product. Shampoo, body

lotion, body wash, razors and deodorant are 13 percent more expensive compared to male products, according to a study conducted by the New York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs.

The pink tax does not exist when it comes to botox. The procedure costs twice as much for men because “men have stronger muscles and in order to relax them it takes literally double the number of units,” according to Allure Magazine. Waxing is also more expensive for men because their hair tends to be coarser.

Although personal hygiene and beauty products continue to cost more if it is marketed to women, anything that consists of a professional performing a procedure on men will cost more.

The Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts, hosted every year in Whittier, had its 57th anniversary this past weekend.

New and known artists are chosen each year to showcase their work.

The event has many affairs to it that can vary from watercolor and oil paintings, jewelry, ceramics, acrylics, pottery, photography, sculptures etc. You name it and the festival has it!

Every year, the festival changes up their spiel to catch their attendees eye’s and eventually make a sale from participating artists.

A competition is included for high school students work and local boutiques.

Chairman Roberto Chavez has been a part of the Hillcrest festival for six years now, and is the only known church member involved.

Chavez’s favorite part is seeing the artist bring in their work, which is always new and fresh.

“Our festival is open for everybody, we do not discriminate. Our only requirement is quality to be present[ed],“ said Chavez.

“We have high school students to be a part of the festival and the work they bring in [is] amazing!”

Freelance photographer and artist Pamela Fall has taken a number of images to a new level.

She does a mix of media where she has her photographs printed in color on watercolor paper, and hand paints watercolor colors onto the picture, which pops them into a three dimensional painting that is compared to an illustrating color and culture that is Bella Italia.

“I came up with this tech-

nique seven years ago, and it took a couple of years to find someone who would be able to print for me in archival ink and paper who also prints for Disney” said Fall.

Fall is also involved at the art festival in Laguna Beach during the summer.

The reason behind her talent is the fact that she is a senior, needed more income, got bored of just selling photography, and noticed that nobody was doing the new

technique that she had picked up.

Other artist like Jennifer Shedden and Setsuko Okubo had their pieces of art located in the boutique rooms.

Shedden, a self taught knitter and sewer who has her very own small business, picked up knitting four years ago and it helped sooth her stress.

Okubo has been a part of the festival for 28 years and uses mix media in watercolor,

oil, acrylics, and others.

The Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts was free of admission, welcoming everyone to browse, shop,enjoy live entertainment, and yummy food.

It was thanks to Chavez’s small army that the setup and final touches for this creative event were completed.

“The board, the people I work with have taught me so much and helped me out a lot. I wouldn’t get a lot done without them” said Chavez.

‘Fast Forward’ furnishes beautiful storytelling PETE ESCOBAR A&E Editor pete.escobar2024@my.riohondo.edu

Rio Hondo College’s 2nd annual alumni dance concert “Fast Forward” made it’s way to the Wray Theater Feb. 24; delivering on point performances from both Rio Hondo students and alumni throughout the night.

With a total of 11 dance acts, not one failed to deliver a rich and meaningful performance. Each act told a unique story and each dancer conveyed that story in an alluring way; using only their bodies as their canvases.

“Fast Forward” was choreographed and performed by past Rio Hondo students who have completed the Rio Hondo Dance Program and have either transferred or found other work.

“Tonight we had dancers who are at Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Dominguez Hills and [are a part of] their dance programs. We also have people in the industry, like from Disneyland,” Dr. Alyson Cartagena, Rio Hondo’s Dance Program Director explained.

“Help?” was the act that kicked-off the night. Choreographed by Christopher Chavez, a choreographer/ coach at Pioneer High School and performer at Disneyland, the performance felt sharp and aggressive in the most elegant way possible.

Four dancers were spread apart in a square formation around the stage; each with a spotlight shone on them, making the act feel neatly organized and visually appeal-

ing. The choreography was quick and intense; providing a satisfying dance number to introduce the night.

“A El Effecto De La Musica” was by far the most unique performance of the night. With choreography

by Sheena Castillo, A CSULB student and mother of two, and collaboration from the dance crew, the performance successfully managed to integrate an image of a beautiful mural located in Los Angeles, a live acoustic performance from Paul Smith, and a dance number from an ensemble of performers into one act.

Smith performed the song “A El Effecto De La Music” alongside the dancers.

Behind the performers was the photograph of the mural which towered over the performance. The song mimicked a lullaby tune; and with matching choreography, the act played out like a well-oiled machine working to develop something out of a dream.

With a total of seven dancers, each moved alongside the other seamlessly.

Every detail integrated into this performance complemented another, an admirable accomplishment considering the large cast.

The night ended strong with the performance “We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us.” Choreographed

by Melissa Nicole Fuentes, the act told the devastating story of pollution’s effect on society and doubled down on a very true point: the majority of people choose to ignore its looming presence.

performance depicted the true definition of melancholy with a mix of beauty and peace.

In the act, seven performers danced gracefully in a group at the center of the stage while one outlier dressed in a dark brown robe (who i’ll refer to as the “polluter”) pranced menacingly around them. Eventually, the polluter began pulling the dancers out of their trance

one by one with his dusty cloth; all while the others remained oblivious to his actions. In the end, one dancer remained.

Finally realizing what had happened, she tried to fight back against the menace, but was too late and eventually defeated. The act was choreographic storytelling at its finest.

The minor details like the dust on the polluter’s

clothes were immersing, and the tragic reality of the story was all too beautiful to take your eyes off of. Hard-hitting lessons can be taught with beauty.

“Fast Forward” produced a night full of emotion and elegance, and is a prime example of the great work that can be created by both past and current Rio Hondo students that took part of Rio Hondo’s Dance Program.

‘Moonlight’ shines a light on the Oscars

To say that the mix up was embarrassing would be an understatement. The blunder robbed “Moonlight’s” cast of their moment while simultaneously robbing the “La La Land” cast of their own.

The momentous win for “Moonlight” could have lead to a speech about people of color in the LGBTQ+ community. Instead it lead to a lot of awkward standing around and silent shock.

Besides the hiccup for the best picture award, this year’s Oscars were as predictable as ever. Still, it provided a night full of entertainment for people looking to criticize the awards show, or praise it.

Colleen Atwood took home the award for best costume design after being nominated 12 times and taking home four awards after Sunday. Her resume includes “Alice in Wonderland” and “Memoirs of a Geisha.”

Atwood won for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

Kevin O’connor won the award for best sound mixing.

O’connor thanked his late mother who got him his first sound job 39 years ago and told him to thank her one day by working hard and thanking her on the Oscar stage, which he did with passion and grace.

Viola Davis beat out Octavia Spencer and Nicole Kidman for best supporting actress. Davis said artists hold the only profession that tells stories from the grave.

She dedicated the award to those who passed and had

The Oscars 2016 brought out the trend of #OscarsSoWhite, with the lack of diversity in the nominees it wasn’t hard to see why. But a simple google search on IMDB would have shown the world the great works that were in the making for this year’s show.

People of all colors and backgrounds were represent-

ed in wins, appearances, and nominations throughout the 43 million dollar telecast.

Last year’s winner for best actor, Leonardo DiCaprio announced the winner for best actress in a leading role.

The highly coveted win went to “La La Land’s” Emma Stone, who had a humble beginning that started off in town theatres and lots of rejection when moving to Hollywood. Stone promised to

The film is primarily a thriller/horror and plays as such. It peaks when it needs to and scares when appropriate.

‘Get Out’and see it

Get Out is a thriller/ horror movie combined with pieces of comedy to round out its serious tone.

This movie is directed by Jordan Peele, half of the Key and Peele comedy team. For someone who primarily works

Jordan Peele does a fantastic job directing this film and making each point matter in his own way.

- Andrew Rudin, Science & Tech Editor in comedy, this is a fantastic film in this genre.

Comedy is weaved into this film in its true form, but it is also incorporated into the horror aspect as well. The true form in terms of standing on its own as a skit.

Incorporated into the horror as in jump scares that surprises, but as a trope.

Do the Oscars Matter?

The oscars don’t really matter. Although it is nice to try to reward people for all of their hard work, the effort they put forth isn’t what gets the awards.

Awards like, best picture, aren’t really confirmed by the awards itself. The award is earned not by people weighing and judging the merits of the film, but rather by how much each films marketing team throws at the members of the academy.

This is mostly done through, For your consideration campaign, where the studios send the voting members early copies of the films, rolodexes, ipads etc, to get the members to vote for them.

The studios throw parties that treat the members to the best food, drinks and close up meetings/socializing with celebrities. Studios can and will spend up to millions for one of their films to at least gain an nomination.

Studios show that a nomination /win can help the franchise in its entirety make a whole lot of money. We live in a culture where the content of the film doesn’t matter as much as the money that is thrown at the member of whatever academy they are trying to appeal too.

As much as we’d like to hope that these films and such artistry is awarded purely by its content, the reality is that like money talks and wins awards.

The Academy Awards or as we call them the “Oscars” is one of the highest honors earned for cinematic achievement.

Varying from best visual effects to best actor, the first ever shown in May of 1929. There are definitely pros and cons to the whole award system. Hard work is always appreciated and accepted don’t get me wrong but I would definitely love to see more diversity when casting actors in the huge blockbuster films.

The Oscars give actors and actresses an opportunity to outshine the rest with their phenomenal acting skills.

Usually when films are nominated for the award they’re huge hits in the box office, that’s not always the case.

Whenever people think of Oscars we immediately think it’s just a random award show to celebrate so much more.

A celebration for those working behind the scene to make the film that’s presented to the world.

Cinematography, writing, sound mixing, production design, music, editing, costume design to name a few. We return to our original question do they matter?

To those who work passionately and singlehandedly dedicate their lives to bring a totally original and flawless vision to the screen they do. For the movies you’ve presented and brought much joy to all we thank you.

Lady Roadrunners volleyball team opens season with a pair of losses and a win

The Rio Hondo College women’s beach volleyball team started off their opening match of the season winning one out of three matches over a two day period in Huntington Beach Feb. 23 against Golden West College losing 4-1 overall, followed by a tight 3-2 win against Santa Monica College Feb. 24.

In the Lady Roadrunners season opener, windy conditions impacted the game drastically affecting the game play and ball trajectory. Despite losing to Golden West, Head Coach Teddi Esko said “For our first match, playing a very strong Golden West beach program, we started on the right foot with our season. We were competitive, and we maintained the integrity of the game with it being an extremely windy day, highly impacting beach volleyball by moving the ball around; our team did a great job of managing that.”

The returning State Championship qualifiers from last season, Carleigh Cruz and Paula Alferez, led the Lady Roadrunners by picking up a pair of wins for Rio Hondo. The pair made it all the way to the State Championship qualifiers last season in Rio Hondo’s first ever year implementing the beach volleyball program.

“The team is absolutely still transitioning from in-

door to beach, we have been training since mid January and all of my players are indoor players other than the six returning players from last season, the six new comers were making a big leap from indoor to beach. It’s a completely different game, with different terrain you go from playing with six players down to two, however the court and net sizes remain the same,” said Esko referring to the increased responsibility of each pair in beach volleyball.

At No. 2, Cruz and Alferez picked up the Lady Roadrunners lone victory, surpassing Golden West’s pair of Jasmine Gonzalez and Amanda Sosa with scores of 21-19, and 2114 as the remaining pairs came close, but Rio lost 4-1 overall.

Rio Hondo College next faced Santa Monica College Feb. 24, where the pair of Cruz and Alferez managed to get another win by scores of 21-12 and 21-8 at No. 2.

The pair of Bree Newton and Sara Harding at No. 4 as well as Victoria Martinez and Natalie Magallon at No. 5 led the Lady Roadrunners to a 3-2 victory.

With an overall record of 1-1 for Rio Hondo, the team next looked to face Cypress College Feb. 24 where Cruz and Alferez played up at No. 1 and ended up suffering their first loss, falling 21-13, 21-17 to Rochelle Cohlson and Sam Martinez.

Rio Hondo had a run of chances at wins at No.4 and No. 5 but the pair of Newton and Harding as well as Martinez and Magallon both suffered three-set losses as the Lady Roadrunners were swept 5-0 by a very strong Cypress College beach volleyball program.

In order to prepare for their upcoming matches Mar. 3, the team will be watching game film from their last three matches and the team is going to sit with their partner and watch how they did, what they did good as well as what they need to improve on.

Esko is a strong believer in “if you don’t see what you’re doing, your coach could tell you all day to change this technique or to try this, but if they don’t really see themselves doing it, how are they supposed to change it?”

She believes if her players are able to actually see how they are playing, and have that visual representation that it will help the team improve drastically.

“After tough losses I try to keep things positive, there’s always something beneficial out of every competition even if you win you still need to look at it and go, how can we get better? You need to have that constantly evolving mindset of I’m not great I’m good, but how can I be better?” said Esko on how she motivates her team after a loss.

As the team continues to adjust to beach volleyball, Coach Esko plans on addressing all of the good that they are doing, while also pinpointing exactly why they lost a game and what they

need to improve on.

The Lady Roadrunners currently have an overall record of 1-2 and will next face Santa Ana College and Orange Coast College at Huntington Beach Mar. 3.

The Rio Hondo baseball team could not close out the game against the Oxnard Condors, losing 12-8 and have dropped their last two games after a six game winning streak that now have them with a record of 8-4 overall.

Playing at “The Jungle” in Rio Hondo, the Roadrunners began the game with strong hitting from the team in the first two innings with Randy Buenrostro. He totaled three hits in five at-bats and one of his

two RBI’s came in the first inning after doubling and letting Gabe Chavez come in for Rio’s first score.

It was the pitching however for Rio that could not let them escape what would have been a winnable game had it stayed consistent.

While Isaiah Ramos looked like he was on the way to a great day with the Condors getting two hits off of him. The third inning saw him give up five runs off six hits and would make it an early exit for Ramos in the following inning.

The Roadrunners had a chance to get back in the

bottom of the third inning with bases loaded after some bad Oxnard pitching, walking two players and hitting two players while making a pitching substitution in the inning. Rio only managed to score a run by Nick Ybarra and left three players on base which would have helped later in the game.

In the next four innings, both teams were tied 7-7 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, when Buenrostro had his second RBI of the game, advancing to second and letting Danny Marquez score to put

them up by one, 8-7 going into the final inning.

Once again, the Roadrunners pitching could not sustain the lead with Oxnard having five runs in the final inning on pitching by Anthony Franco who replaced Chris Velasquez, who had relief pitched the last three innings without a hit or a run and two strikeouts.

The three errors by Rio in the final inning led to five unearned runs by Oxnard that Rio could not match in the bottom of the ninth, with their momentum gone and needing six

runs to win the game sealed the victory for the Oxnard Condors.

The loss left Rio Hondo at 8-4, finishing up 12 of their scheduled 13 non-conference games with their match against San Bernardino Valley College yet to be played after the game rained out.

Rio Hondo will begin their South Coast Conference matchups with their first game against Cerritos College Mar 2 at home and will wrap up a quick twogame series with the Condors Mar. 4.
