Federal Authorities Round Up Hundreds of Illegal Immigrants Nationwide

Immigration Customs Enforcement agents conducted immigration raids over the weekend arresting 160 local undocumented people in the Los Angeles area.

United States Immigration Authorities have conducted series of raids across 11 states targeting undocumented immigrants throughout the country last week.

This law enforcement comes from President Trump’s recently signed executive order January 25, cracking down on the millions of illegal immigrants living in the country.

The raids were meant to target illegal immigrants that have criminal records and immigrants that been charged with an offense (even if there was no conviction).

gal immigrant that commits “fraud or willful misrepresentation in connection with any official matter or application before a governmental agency” which includes any illegal immigrant that used a false social security number on a job application, and gives an immigration officer the “judgement” to determine on whether that specific immigrant is a danger to public order and national security.

Atlanta, Chicago, New York, North Carolina, and South Carolina all have had raids conducted throughout the week. Further raids have also been reported in Virginia, Florida, Kansas, and Texas.

The raids ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) conducted have

accumulated over 150 arrests in the Los Angeles area alone, with hundreds throughout the country reported by ICE itself.

David Marin, ICE’s field director in the LA area, reported in a conference call with reporters on Friday that of the 160 people detained in the operation this week 120 had felony convictions. The rest had misdemeanors or were in the US illegally. Officials said 37 detainees in Los Angeles had been deported to Mexico.

“We’re talking about people who are threats to public safety or a threat to the integrity of the immigration system,” Gillian Christensen a spokeswoman of the Department of Homeland Security said about the raids.

Christensen stated that the raids are “targeted enforcement actions” and are routine immigration enforcement actions.

While the federal government maintains that these raids are routine for ICE, opposition believe that it is the start of Trump’s promise to crackdown on illegal immigrants.

“And these are constituents of mine who have no criminal records — nothing.

But they’re being targeted and are really concerned,” Austin City Councilman Greg Casar has said in an interview with Los Angeles Times.

immigrants are now hanging dark sheets on windows and refusing to open their doors, even to immigrant rights outreachers.

President Trump has continued his campaign against illegal immigrants, signing executives orders ordering the construction of the wall along with thousands of new immigration officers, and the punishment of any “sanctuary cities” that do not cooperate with federal government by withholding federal funds.

With much concern being placed over DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and which side the administration will adhere to, possibly 2.1 million eligible students education come now into question.

Northern California University Tour

Rio Hondo College is hosting information sessions throughout the month of February for students who are interested in visiting some of Northern California’s most prestigious universities.

The next information session for students are being held February 13-16 in the Student Services building.

Many counselors have been filtering the information to students by visiting various classes to encourage students to attend the information sessions. Many counselors are encouraging students to attend the trip especially if they have aspirations to transfer.

The first information meeting was hosted by counselors in the Transfer Center February 13th and the meeting was open to any student that was interested.

The Northern California University Tour is presented to students as an opportunity to visit campuses in Northern California that they can potentially transfer to. The tour is taking place March 28-March 30 and is available for all students attending Rio Hondo College. The campuses being visited on the tour are San Francisco State University, University of California Davis, University of California Santa Cruz, California State University Sacramento, University of California Berkeley, and University of California Santa Barbara during the span of two days.

The counselors promoting the trip are advertising the trip as an opportunity to visit many campuses that aren’t within driving distance for students.

The tour is concurrently accepting applications from Rio Hondo College

students and is asking for a $25 deposit when submitting their applications. The deadline to apply for the trip is Friday, March 3 at 2:00 pm.

The students are encouraged to submit their application in a timely manner using the online application link provided during the information sessions. The Transfer Center counselors are also holding more information sessions throughout the week for students who are interested. The last information for students is being held February 27 in the Student Services building in room 225.

Counselors also advise students who have any other further questions to visit the Transfer Center (Student Services Building 225) or to call their office at (562) 463-4619.

Stephen Bannon Now Sits Permanently on the National Security Council, Unbeknownst to Trump JAKE LAURELL Reporter

In the wake of President Trump’s first few busy weeks comes an executive order that places Stephen K. Bannon, White House Chief Strategist, in a seat on the National Security Council.

President Trump signed off on the order without fully understanding that Bannon would be filling this post, according to The New York Times’ recent report as of February 5. Trump was reportedly upset because the new president wanted a full briefing in the appointment process for his newly appointed White House chief strategist and senior counselor to the president.

Chief of Staff Rience Priebus established a 10-point checklist for any subsequent initiatives that need an approval from the White House Communications Department. Priebus also stated to both Bannon and Trump that the administration needed to rethink and restructure its communication and policy in regards to the leaks about the

Bannon, self described as an economic nationalist, but popularly known as an “alt-right” white nationalist, was born in Virginia. Bannon served seven years in the Navy, and had a career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs. Bannon also had a presence in the media spotlight for founding the infamous news organization Breitbart, and had the position of Chief Executive during the President’s election campaign. Prior to his appointment in the Trump administration, Bannon has no previous role in government nor foreign policy.

Despite this, the administration maintains that he is a perfect pick for Trump’s cabinet. “He is a former naval officer. He’s got a tremendous understanding of the world and the geopolitical landscape that we have now,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer told ABC’s “This Week” last month.

While the administration is confident in Bannon’s ability, detractors have voiced their concern on his merits and politics.

“Having Mr. Bannon as a voting member of the principals committee will have a negative influence on what is supposed to be candid, nonpartisan deliberation,” stated Michael Glenn Mullen, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a op-ed published

Mullen, who served under both presidents of Obama and Bush from 2007 to 2011 spoke of his disapproval of some of Trump’s actions but mainly focused on Trump’s decision to place Bannon on the National Security Council.

This comes right after President Trump’s recently hotly contested orders and as widespread backlash and unrest continue amongst the president’s first weeks in office. Trump’s wildcard executive orders range from stopping immigrants and refugees from seven predominantly Islamic countries, negotiating our NAFTA trade agreement terms, dismantling the TPP trade deal, to signing off on ordering the revitalization of our infrastructure in America.

Price Hike in UC Tuition

The University of California proposal of a 2.5 percent increase for tuition was approved by the board with a 16-4 vote this past January 25 and 26 as reported by the Los Angeles Times. This is the first time in six years that there has been an increase and it would be implemented 2017-18.

The increase would individually add $282 for tuition and $54 in fees, the total would come back to a $12,630 a year for instate undergraduates, while out-of-state undergraduates will see a $1,688 increase that will total out to $40,644 a year according to abc7.

The proposal was opposed by many students who managed to briefly stop a regents meeting during November, as reported by Los Angeles Times. Students main concern over the increase would be that it is already difficult to support themselves with food and rent even with financial aid covering their tuition cost.

The UC president, Janet Napolitano, said the increase

would be needed to keep the quality of universities at its best and other university officials have pointed out that the enrollment number is constantly growing while state funding is shrinking as reported by abc7.

According to university officials money gained from the increase would go to providing more financial aid, hiring more faculty, and expanding course offerings.

UC Spokeswoman Dianne Klein in support of the raise said, “We’re at the point where if we don’t do this, if we don’t invest, the quality of education is going to suffer.” Klein continued in a KTLA5 report with, “We want these students to have the same or better experience than students who came before.”

Despite the approval on the increase, the decision was still hard for the regents as reported by the Los Angeles Times. “Every single one of us in this room doesn’t want to raise tuition for our students,” said Regent Charlene Zettle. “It’s very painful for us all.”

Oroville Dam On The Verge Of Collapse

The dam in Oroville, CA contines to be on the brink as authorities order evucation of severval counties in the northern part of the state from abnormal amount of rainfall.

“Police arrest 16-yearold boy for posting a threat against the students and staff at Warren High School in the city of Downey.

A 16-year-old was arrested Sunday night for posting a threat on his social media alarming several of his followers. The 16-year-old posted the warning of “Don’t go to school tomorrow.” he post was made on the student’s Snapchat story and was taken down once the authorities got to him.

The school’s staff reported the threat and the student was taken into custody Sunday night around 8:30 pm.

The Downey Police Department has reason to believe that the student would not have carried on with the threat. Although no classes were cancelled Monday, there were still police officers who

stayed on the Warren High School’s campus for the day.

After the DPD called the threat a bluff, Warren High School made a public announcement on their Facebook page stating “Please know that DPD believes WHS is safe and school will be in session tomorrow as usual.

We thank you for your trust and confidence and look forward to continuing the education of our kids.”

This incident alarmed several students and parents and although this announcement was made, several parents did not feel safe taking their children to school without knowing if the unnamed student was acting alone with his threat.

Due to past school invasions, the Downey Police Department and Warren High School are taking this matter rather seriously to make sure that the students and staff are kept safe.

Evacuations were underway Sunday in Northern California after reported damage to the Oroville Dam. The dam is reportedly the nation’s largest,covering at least 770 feet.

The heavy rainfall caused spillage to occur.

Governor Jerry Brown has declared state of emergency to Butte and Yuba county, at least 200,000 have been evacuated.

California has experienced one of its rainiest seasons in years, the rain has helped replenish the long standing drought experienced all throughout California. A rather sizeable hole has been spotted on the dam 200 feet long and 30 feet deep. The hole has

authorities worried as well as the residents if the dam were to collapse it would cause a large amount of damage.

According to ABC News Raj Gill, a man who manages a Shell gas station had this to say about the recent events “I’m trying to get out of here too. I’m worried about the flooding. I’ve seen the pictures.

That’s a lot of water.”

Residents of Oroville, Gridley, Live Oak, Marysville, Wheatland, Yuba City, Plumas Lake and Olivehurst have been evacuated effective immediately. It would cost at least $200 million to repair the damage done to the Oroville Dam. With a huge storm expected this Friday, all eyes are on the dam.

18th Annual ‘River’s Voice,’ and How It Got Its Start

“River’s Voice” is an annually published journal of art and literature which features work by Rio Hondo students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The five categories of contribution include poetry, short story, memoir, one- act drama, and visual art. Student submissions are eligible to win the River’s Voice Creative Writing Contest, which awards three cash prizes in each literary genre. This year will mark the 18th edition of River’s Voice.

Most people at RHC have read through a copy of River’s Voice and know what an honor it is to be featured

in it. But what many readers might not know is how it got its start, and how it has evolved over the last 18 years.

“River’s Voice was started by a professor named Beverly Riley, and what she found out was that all the students are writing these really interesting pieces, but the only person who ever got to see them was the teacher. She thought they should have a bigger voice,” said Rio Hondo English and literature professor Tom Callinan.

Riley teamed up with Ken Pierson, a fellow English professor, and a student writer to give River’s Voice its humble start. Callinan became the assistant editor, and is still involved almost two decades later. He is still passionate about giving students

the opportunity to showcase their work.

Art professor Sheila Lynch became the arts editor and gave the cover of River’s Voice its flair. The cover of the journal has changed dramatically over the years, but always displays an eye catching student work of art.

The editing team has also gone through several changes, but never fail to publish a beautiful journal every year.

It has been 12 years’ since Capcom has pushed their horror franchise, Resident Evil, to the limit with the release of Resident Evil 4.

Up until now Capcom has released two more sequels with RE5 getting a mixed bag of reviews from straying from horror and being more of a shooter to RE6 being universally panned for being a quick time event mess. With the indie mastering the horror genre for the past three years, can Capcom bring back their A game with Resident Evil, or has the king of horror finally retired?

Resident Evil 7 has

players take control of Ethan Winters who has been looking for his missing wife Mia for the past three years.

Ethan finally gets a video from Mia telling him the location of her whereabouts for the past three years. This lead takes him to a dilapidated estate occupied by the Baker family. The Bakers have all lost their sanctity with a bloodlust for murder with Ethan on their crosshair.

Ethan must make use of basic weapons and tools to fight against the Bakers as well as creatures known as the “Molded”. Can Ethan survive the Bakers and find a way to escape with Mia from this hellhole?

Resident Evil 7’s gameplay takes the traditional for-

mat from the previous series and adds just enough changes to spice up the gameplay. For example, previous entries had the camera in the third-person perspective, but for this entry the camera is now in first-person. This change fits in perfectly because it keeps the plays constantly looking over their shoulders just in case there is a sneak attack rather than having the player aware of the danger due to the third-person view.

The controls of the game are pure Resident Evil combat with the player having to stop, aim, and shoot to deal with foes. Ammo is still as scarce having players ponder if it is worth engaging in a fight or simply just avoid combat. A new mechanic has

New Federal Communications Commission Chairman Fights Net Neutrality

President Donald Trump newly appointed Federal Communications Commission chairman, Ajit Pai, is pushing for the net neutrality rules created under Barack Obama’s presidency to be changed. These net neutrality rules are meant to help protect access to all content on the internet. The decision to make Pai chairman did not need congressional approval as he was already an FCC commissioner since 2012 as reported by Wired.

The departure of previous chairman, Tom Wheeler, gave republicans a two-to-one majority in FCC.

The new chairman previously was known for being against regulations like the “Open Internet Order,” which passed during 2015 and banned internet service providers from stopping legal content, as reported by MIT Technology Review. However Pai is not opposed to all Net Neutrality, he primarily opposes the change in how FCC classifies broadband from an “informative service” to a “telecommunication service.”

This affected companies by allowing the FCC to monitor companies that favor its own content.

Pai has already began his movement for change with stopping nine companies from providing high internet speed services for low-income people, cut a proposal to open the cable box market, and pulled out of an effort to keep phone rates low in

prisons, The New York Times reported. . Since becoming chairman, Pai has released around a dozen actions that are difficult to find on the agency’s site and were not publically announced.

The MIT Technology Review article on the subject went on to state that most of the worries from people opposed to the Pai’s changes are that allowing companies to favor content would make it harder for new sites to compete with big corporations.

While many supporters of the current net neutrality have promised to fight Pai’s decisions, as reported by PCWorld, the changes will continue on as Pai has promised at an event to “remove those rules that are holding back investment, innovation, and job creation.”

been added to help players with health management, and that is blocking. Blocking helps reduce the damage giving to the player and in some cases, block a devastating attack fully. Along with blocking, players now have a way to monitor the controlled player’s health via a “Codex” smart watch. A green pulse means the players in great health, yellow means moderate health, and red means the player is low of health.

Even with all these improvements there is still quite a bit of problems that plague this game. For one, the boss fights are not only trivial, but there are less than five in total. For a series that is known for intense life or death boss fights, it’s a shame

when players can take down these “boss” fights in less than five minutes. Another problem is the final chapter of the game. Without spoiling anything, the story forces the player to lose control of Ethan as well as all their inventory that has been collected throughout the gameplay.

Also, the story around this point starts to become more predictable and ends up becoming a cliché of typical horror stories. The final issue with the game borders on the line of knit picking, but is something that needs to be addressed, the jump scares.

The jump scares are indeed in the game, however it’s never anything original or creative.

It’s just a pop up with a high pitch noise meant to scare the player, but with the high increase of jump scare games lately, this really tames the horrific scene of the game.

Overall, Resident Evil 7 makes a triumphant return into the genre of horror. The game does a great job of making the user feel alone and constantly wondering when the next attack is coming.

Capcom does a great job of modifying the traditional gameplay without completely changing the overall Resident Evil feel, however with a cliché storyline, lack of challenging boss fights, and unoriginal scare tactics keep Resident Evil 7 from topping its older brothers of the past.

Scientists came across an undersea ancient landslide discovered off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

James Cook University was in the middle of a collaboration with the University of Sydney, Granada and Edinburgh when scientists discovered an ancient undersea landslide. The scientists were in the Queensland Trough conducting a three-dimensional mapping of the ancient reefs when the team came across a cluster of hills more than 1,100m beneath the surface.

This landslide is now known as the Gloria Knolls Slide which scientist believe is at least 300,000 years old and 32 cubic km in volume. It is said that it is 30 times the size of Uluru, also known as a rock landmark in central Australia. The team claims that the landslide is as deep as 4,430ft below the sea which also carries clues of “hidden marine life”.

Scientists believe that this could have caused an extreme tsunami. However as of now this will remain an exciting future project.

Rio Hondo College Alumni, Dale Harvey began his career as a part-time professor fresh out of graduate school.

A year later, in 1974 he was teaching full-time at RHC. Harvey retired from teaching five years ago and as of July 2016, became Interim Dean of Arts and Cultural Programs.

Harvey credits his career to instructors he met early in his education. Instructors that made learning fun, and ultimately inspired his learning of the arts. After he transferred to California State University Fullerton, he would often return to RHC to talk to students about his experience.

He continued a connection with instructors all while attending graduate school at

CSUF.

He got hired as an adjunct. A year later in 1974, he was teaching full-time. He tested the waters when he was named Interim Dean of the Arts about 20 years ago, a position he held for one year.

In 1987, Harvey took a sabbatical year to learn more about computer graphics. In turn, he enrolled in every class he possibly cou-ld.

During that time, computer graphics was fairly new, and technology that was not available at RHC.

When he returned from leave, Harvey along with other instructors pioneered a curriculum that competed with other local institutions.

This curriculum is still taught today and RHC is still among the top colleges offering courses on the latest technological trends.

Being an educator is

what Harvey enjoys most. He shared that some of his most gratifying moments have been when former students thank him for having had such a positive impact on their professional careers. It is “so great to share information and [to see it] turned into something successful,” Harvey said.

Harvey, says RHC has “amazing faculty, especially the Art Department, who are willing to do what it takes to help students succeed.” He shared, “it is a great job.”

He wants students to know they are “lucky to be here, they chose the right place. They will learn they can do anything they want to do —they may not believe that yet, but they will.”

We Scream for Ice Cream

This isn’t 31 flavors, it’s at least double that, the stores bright red and white MILK sign sit’s on the corner of a neighborhood known for arts, culture, design as well as its close proximity to Downtown LA. With flavors like Thai tea and Nutella their ice cream comes fresh from milk not treated with hormones you can pick up a scoop of thai tea, blueberry crumble or lavender ice cream that’s made fresh daily.

If you’re feeling experimental grab one of their premade sandwich macaroons that sit in a grab-and-go counter ready for pick up at all times of the day.

They do cater to large orders such as a company party or even a small gathering. Their gingerbread cake literally has an individual

gingerbread on each slice. the tres leches is a heavy portion of an old favorite and is popular among many of Milk’s visitors.

Red velvet is a given but blue velvet makes for an eye popping delectable treat covered in white cream and blue cake flakes that is sure to make any party come together like a well-planned soiree.

Walking in your eyes are stricken by industrial steel countertops and professional-grade bakery and ice cream tools, the staff is warm and welcoming and ready to serve up a classic menu treat or anything your mind could come up with.

The Milk shop in Silverlake has been noted by several LA based food critics as well as self-made Foodies on social media, speaking of which the company and its second location in Beverly can be reached on Instagram Twitter and Facebook they even have an email to set up your next custom order or you can order online if you’re a member of the anti-social social club.

If you’re more of a healthy eater this hot spot probably is not one of your destinations that comes to mind, but think again, they have almond milk, flavor ice cream that is house made everymorning.

If you’re looking to set up your palette for dessert with a simple meal beforehand, go ahead and pick up one of their sandwiches they have tuna with spinach and cheese as well as a few other midday pick me ups.

Rio Hondo’s art gallery ‘Lifts Off’ a survey of the 90’s in L.A.

“Lift Off,” a new art exhibit in the Rio Hondo Art Gallery, features the work of 65 contemporary artists who were up- and- comers of the L.A. art scene in the 90’s. The large collection showcases a wide range of media including photography, sculpture, glasswork, fabric work, ceramics,

paintings, and much more.

The show was curated by Rio’s gallery director, Robert Miller, and Martin Durazo; and features artists that were involved with the Miller/Durazo Contemporary Art project during their early careers.

The culturally diverse group of artists, including many women and POC, focus on subjects of politics, feminism, nature, and world issues.

“This show is basically the ‘Who’s Who’ buzz group

of the 90’s, and they’re still making work 24 years later,” said Miller.

One of the most eye catching works, titled “Rosa and Nathalie” by artist Micol Hebron, depicts two largescale images of glittery, brightly- colored vaginas.

Hebron often uses her art as a platform to explore themes such as gender equality and contemporary feminism.

Another piece that stood out is “The Dollhouse Gallery Retrospective” by Jennifer Katell. This slideshow displays her past project, in which artists exhibited miniature work in her small childhood dollhouse.

The wonderful thing about her dollhouse gallery is that it provided artists with a different approach to not only creating art, but also exhibiting it.

“I hope this shows students that you don’t need an established gallery, you can use alternative space to do fun things and get creative,” said Miller.

Lift Off is a beautifully diverse and inclusive collection of art that students should stop by and check out. It will be shown Feb. 1- 27 in the Rio Hondo Art Gallery, open Monday- Thursday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., and Monday and Wednesday evenings 6- 9 p.m.

Guang Shan Hsi Lai Buddhist temple in Hacienda Heights celebrated the 2017 Lunar New Year’s celebration of the Year of the Rooster.

The rooster emphasises clarity and strength in decision making, which will lead to great change, according to the Chinese Zodiac beliefs.

The Temple recognized this event with decorations relating to the lunar year, as well as hosting different classes

that revolve around the event.

The long term event, which started Jan. 28 and will end Feb. 11, are the Spring Peace Lanterns.

They are made and placed among the temple lanterns and are lit to symbolize the Buddha’s enlightenment, with many of them being dedicated to different families, friends, lovers, and everything in between. Besides the long running event, there are a variety of special evening events during the remaining hours, including: Chinese knotting, lantern riddles, Tai Chi

demonstrations and Qigong Yijin Spring Festival Couplets.

To accompany those are daily events that take place from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., which consist of light offerings, a new year make a wish tree, paper-cutting arts, Dharma words, peace-bell tolling, as well as the aforementioned Spring Peace Lanterns.

Even with New Year’s celebration over, the Guang Shan Hsi Lai Buddhist temple is a must visit location for those who want to learn more about other cultures and explore local sights.

With the end of the award season coming to a close, the 59th Grammys aired Feb. 12; accrediting prestigious titles and awards.

This year’s show was hosted by The Late Late show host James Corden, who’s Hamilton inspired rap discussed the nominees/ performers of the night as well as current socio-political events.

The person who completely dominated the event was Adele, who won record of the year, album of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance, and best pop vocal album.

After receiving the record of the year, Adele gave a speech recognizing the impact and importance fellow

artist Beyonce album “Lemonade” had, that album being in the same category. Beyonce herself won awards for best urban contemporary album and best music video.

Other notable winners included Chance the Rapper for best new artist award and best rap album award, Drake for best rap/sung performance and best rap song, and David Bowie being presented with best rock performance, best rock song, best alternative music album, best recording package, and best engineered album, non-classical.

As expected, many of the ceremonies performers/participants included a political theme into whatever segments they were a part of.

The most poignant being A Tribe Called Quest’s, whose performance main message

was promoting inclusiveness and the willingness to resist persecution of any kind.

Lady Gaga and Metallica also collaborated, performing a new single called Chained to the Rhythm, which was inspired by The Supreme Court’s decision to hear a case regarding transgender students’ right to use the bathroom that they feel corresponds with the gender they identify with.

For the entire night the most visually fantastic was Beyoncé’s body positive performance and a lackluster performance of the night surprisingly coming from Adele.

Overall, the 59th Grammys was a routine ceremony with a splash of political statements and well crafted choreography. This year was as shallow and average as it gets.

‘John Wick 2’ delivers

“John Wick 2” can be described as a finely crafted and stylized action movie that is a perfect “Avatar” type film.

“John Wick 2” is the action movie lovers dream; this film pulls no punches with practical effects, fight scene choreography or cinematography.

The locations of Italy and New York are utilized well.

Sharp, dirty and vibrant

shots compliment many of the scenes in the film. Every stunt and special or practical effect was incredibly believable and helped create a gritty and alive world.

Fans of first-person shooter video games will really appreciate a live action version of one. John Wick’s suit, armor and willingness to grab and use other people as weapons is visually gratifying (even if it’s a little silly.)

Wick is a former professional assassin who, due to the events of the first film, is

brought out of retirement and is pulled into one last assassination job.

The film itself isn’t incredibly complex, nor does it try to tell a grand story, but that’s not the point of the film. What director Chad Stahelski accomplishes is a beautiful and well-crafted action movie.

The action scenes were well-structured and believable, with the gore not being gratuitous.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ teases upcoming season CORBIN BOONE Reporter

Rupaul’s Drag Race is back for it’s ninth installment of the hit reality show-competition hosted by Rupaul.

For those who don’t know, or have been living under a rock for the past nine years, Rupaul’s Drag Race is an insanely fun show to watch that involves drag queens competing for money.

The upcoming season has shown a line-up of twelve performers with the wit and style to match their talents.

The new season has been highly anticipated; but now after the previous season of All Stars 2, where twelve returning contestants from previous seasons compete to be inducted in the “Drag Race Hall of Fame.”

There is much to live up to in terms of performance, art, and drama. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that the performances are fantastic, the makeup isn’t terrible, and that it is chock-full of drama.

The queens presented themselves in the promotional commercial wearing one-color outfits, each creatively showing off their stylish flair. that it seemed like the level of choreography and stunts are consistently good, but never escalates beyond that.

Keanu Reeves is the star of this film and does what he does best: delivers lines as blandly as possible while adding a small amount of sass placed upon his one liners.

They appear to have a dramatic sense of style with plenty of feathers, rhinestones, and silhouettes. This season is sure to surpass other seasons in terms of style section. Let’s talk about the personalities of the girls. An interview was released showing off each girl’s uniqueness, nerve, and talent.

Many had their own unique traits, but the one that stood to out was Aja, who had a very laid back exterior and was almost like a combination of previous competitors, Adore Delano and Pearl.

Is Aja a soon to be fan favorite? Who knows, but she has plenty of charisma to become memorable.

Season nine will be an exciting season at the least. It is sure to hold many surprises and keep jaws dropping.

Rupaul has kept fans waiting long enough and it is time for a new set of queens. avatar for people to project themselves onto.

The background characters work great, fantastically utilizing the physical and acting presence of Ruby Rose, John Leguizamo and former “Matrix” co-star Laurence Fishburne.

It is a sleek, vibrant and colorful action film that is incredibly solid and entertainingly simple.

Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Performance Leads to Body Positivity Lisa Garcia Reporter

When it comes to the Super Bowl, many people look forward to the football game but especially halftime show.

Every year we are excited to find out what celebrity will be performing. But most of all we look forward to the overall show setup of how he or she will look and deliver their performance.

This year happened to be Lady Gaga in charge of the

halftime show. She followed up last year’s star studded show that included Coldplay, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars.

Gaga began the show with a rendition of “God Bless America.” She then bungee jumped into the stadium to perform some her biggest hits such as “Edge of Glory,” “Poker face,” “Born This Way,” “Just Dance,” and more.

When her performance was over many posted about their feelings towards Gaga’s performance saying they

loved it and that it was amazing.

While others began to make comments about how her stomach happened to look because many had felt that her stomach wasn’t as flat as it should have been. Calling her names from “Fat” to “Flabby” and more.

When Gaga herself heard about this she took to her social media account to proudly say “I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I’m proud of my body

and you should be proud of yours too.”

Diego Crespo is co-editorin-chief of El Paisano print newspaper. In his spare time, Diego is a struggling freelance writer who loves to talk about movies. His greatest aspiration in life is to write a Spider-Man story. He can also legally officiate marriages.

Noah Garcia is the Opinion editor as well as the Co-EIC of the paper. He is often applauded for his appearance and his inability to control his volume. He’s also a former jazz singer, and has aspirations not being homeless.

Diana Juarez, also known as "Juarez". She is a copy editor for El Paisano. She is an award-winning writer who works overtime in the newsroom. She is also a communications major and is in the process of writing her first full-length novel.

Pete Escobar enjoys hikes and skateboarding in his free time. If it wasn't for his journalistic interests, he would probably pursue a field in Biology or Astronomy. In his future, he hopes to find a position at a news station or online. When Pete retires, he wishes to travel as much as possible.

Crystian Mendoza is currently the Sports Editor for El Paisano, and he really enjoys writing. He also enjoys watching and playing sports.

He is mainly a soccer fan, but he also likes basketball, baseball, and tennis.

Eileen Gaena is the lifestyles editor at El Paisano. She is looking forward to transferring next semester to a Cal State. She can see herself working in television or radio broadcasting in the future.

Zachary Mejia is the Managing editor for El Paisano.

He mainly covers school and local news, but occasionally writes about global politics.

After college he plans to become an embedded reporter and cover conflicts in the Middle East.

Rio Hondo College women’s softball team finished off their second game of season with a 2-1 win that went all the way to eight innings. The Lady Roadrunners competed against Long Beach City College Feb. 9 after a loss to Cypress College Feb. 1.

Sophomore pitcher Brenae Martinez pushed through a tiring game, but knew that her team would be able to stick it out and come around.

Martinez’s pitching throughout the game was pretty consistent, only allowing a total of 5 hits and 1 run.

Both teams struggled with landing a run in the first four innings until the top of the fifth inning where Long Beach opened the scoreboard. A. Vega doubled with a runner on base leading D. Ve-

Now it was time to play ball.

“[I] Was nervous at first because we came into this

game a little shaky from last game, but in the end we were able to come through,” Martinez said after the game.

No time was being wasted knowing Long Beach only had a one point lead; Rio’s softball team kept a clean , tight defense with only one Hiit and three left on base before the seventh inning.

The Lady Roadrunners managed to tie the game at the end of seventh inning after Freshman Tiana Rodriguez setup Karina Gomez with a sacrificial fly ball to equalize the game. Gomez stated that it felt pretty good scoring for the team.

With an eighth inning underway, Long Beach could not manage to get a run in leaving the Lady Roadrunners with an opportunity to seal the deal for themselves.

With just one out, one hit, and one runner on base; Freshman Janea Guevara scored in once #11 Marissa Macias reached on a fielder choice ending the game in

the eighth inning.

When asked how the game went overall, Guevara shared that “it was a little hard since none of them were hitting, but once they got to the final innings, the team had to step it up and get some runs.”

“Only expectation myself and assistant coach have for the team is to get better every single day, this was an improvement from last game and the little things are getting better every single day.”

Proud head coach of 11 seasons, Urquidi said “My team did a very good job executing what we asked of them to execute and that is the part that got the job done.”

Women’s Softball will go and “Always!” said by Coach Bianca Urquidi be ready for game three taking place at San Diego Mesa at 11:00 am and one at 1 pm.

The Rio Hondo College baseball team had a great comeback win to edge Santa Barbara City College Feb. 9 by a score of 6-5. The Roadrunners now have an overall record of 4-2 to start the season.

In the top of the first inning, an error by Rio Hondo allowed John Jensen of Santa Barbara City College to send home Joseph Hamilton giving them a one run favor while Aaron Portee made it to second base safely.

The following batter for SBCC, Blake Ogburn, hit a three-run home run off of pitcher Brady Carlson to give the “Vaqueros” an early lead.

Going into the bottom of the first inning, the score was 4-0. The Roadrunners were able to chip away at the deficit with an RBI single by Randy Buenrostro. In the bottom of the third inning, Buenrostro drove in another run bringing in Marcos Rivas to make the score 4-2.

It took until the bottom of the sixth inning for the Roadrunners to get on the scoreboard again. Nick Ybarra had an RBI single to bring in Alex Rodriguez. During that play catcher Danny Marquez was able to advance to second base

Next up for Rio, Marcos Rivas, drove in Marquez to tie the game at four a piece. With two outs, power hitter R.J. Romo was able to drive home Ybarra to give Rio Hondo the first lead of the game with the score now at 5-4.

Good pitching for the Roadrunners by Isaiah Ramos held the Santa Barbara Vaqueros scoreless until the top of the eighth inning. Vaquero, Tyler Rosen blasted a solo homerun to left field to tie up the game at 5-5 as tensions rose at “The Jungle.”.

With the game on the line, the Roadrunners played some tactical small-ball to advance Gabe Chavez to third base.

With one out, Marquez hit a deep fly ball to center field to score Chavez. The sacrifice fly was the final dagger to secure the walk off win by the Roadrunners.

Pitcher Anthony Franco gets the win for the Roadrunners with two scoreless innings of relief to secure a comeback victory. With a winning streak alive, the Roadrunners look to continue the trend against Mt. San Jacinto Feb. 10. The Roadrunners will then be back at home in “The Jungle” until an away game Feb. 18th against San Bernardino College.

RHC men’s basketball team fail to keepup with Mt. San Antonio College VICTOR LOZANO Reporter

The final home game for the men’s basketball team did not end the way they anticipated, as the Mt. SAC offense took off in the second half leaving Rio Hondo winless in the conference.

The Roadrunners had the advantage early in the game, as they led by a score of 18-8 seven minutes into the game and felt they could win their first South Coast conference game with their effort.

Guards Damian Salcedo and Derek Ohara kept the offense alive for Rio in the first quarter with Salcedo contributing with five points while dishing out seven assists.

Ohara had the hot hand, making a couple of three pointers, having 12 points to end the half.

Soon after the Mounties came back with a run of their own and took the lead, taking advantage of the fouls and turnovers from the Roadrunner offense to take a 41-39 lead going into the half.

After losing the lead midway through the first half, most of the team were unable to find the basket and turned the ball over 13 times com-

pared to five turnovers in the first.

Ohara tried his best to get within striking distance, continuing his hot shooting with 13 points but Salcedo could not keep up his great play, turning the ball over five times and only garnering one assist in the second.

The lead had ballooned to as much as 19 until Rio made it a manageable game near the end but the run was too late. The Roadrunners’ 22 turnovers led to 31 points for the Mounties and poor bench production could not keep up with Mt. SAC, losing the battle 39-7.

A night where Salcedo, Myles Jackson and Angelo Sandoval were being honored for the annual Sophomore Night, recognizing the athletes for their contribution on the team, was spoiled by Mt. SAC and left them winless in the South Coast Conference with a record of 0-8.

The loss drops the Roadrunners to 8-18 overall as they have not won a game since Dec. 17, when they faced Santa Barbara College in the L.A Southwest Intensity Classic. They will be on the road for their next game, facing Pasadena City College on Feb. 15.

Trying to finish their season on the right foot, Rio Hondo tried its best to snap a 15-game losing streak against the best team in the South Coast Conference, Mt. San Antonio College.

The team gave everything they could to give the sophomore players on the team a win on Sophomore Night, recognizing Racquel Romero, Aliyah Montiel, Marisa DeLeon and Joselyn Santillan in their final home game of the season.

Things started well in the first quarter for the Lady Roadrunners, Montiel providing most of the offense in the game with six points in the quarter while trailing 22-14 at the end of one.

The second quarter of the game for Rio was one they wish they could have back, as

the entire team could not find their shot, shooting 3 of 12 altogether as they were outscored 21-8, leading to a halftime deficit of 43-22.

By the beginning of the third quarter, the Lady Roadrunners did not have any rhythm to their offense thanks in part by seven turn-

overs and unable to convert their shots. At one point Rio trailed by 35, but managed to score nine points to trail big in the final quarter, 65-31.

It was the fourth quarter where the Lady Roadrunners began to make noise with both Montiel and DeLeon scoring 15 of the 20 fourth quarter points, but it was too little too late as the Mounties took the win in a blowout.

Not much could be said about the team’s performance with Montiel and DeLeon responsible for more than half of the team’s points, totaling 32 of their 51 points.

Rio’s bench only contributed two points while the Mounties had 36 points, they were beat on the boards by a margin of 55-34 and 25 Roadrunner turnovers led to 28 points on the other end.

The Lady Roadrunners now drop to an overall record of 4-21 and a conference record of 0-8. The team will try to correct everything that went wrong in this game for their next game against Pasadena City College on Dec. 15.
