Election Results Spark Protests in Downtown Los Angeles PETE ESCOBAR A&E Editor

Anti-Trump protesters filled the streets of Los Angeles Nov. 9, in an effort to spread a message of disapproval towards President-elect Donald Trump.

Rallies began as early as 6 p.m. in Pershing Square.

Once a large amount of demonstrators were rallied, people marched to City Hall where hundreds of other protesters were convening.

Protests at City Hall were relatively peaceful, even though a group of people lit a piñata modeled after Donald Trump’s head on fire and a demonstrator climbed a streetlight to hang a piñata pig that was made to represent Trump.

Throughout the night, demonstrators chanted slogans like, “Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here,” “Si, se puede,” and held up signs that read “This is very bad,” and “Not my president.”

One protester, an undocumented immigrant that wanted to remain anonymous, explained why he felt it was his duty to take part in the protests that night. “My

American dream. No matter how scared I am of the future of this nation and my own future, I won’t let it bring me down and stop me from doing what my parents brought me to this country to do, which is to thrive,” he explained.

Despite the relatively peaceful protests that filled the streets of Los Angeles and City Hall, other cells of protesters scattered around LA were dispersed with police intervention.

The Los Angeles Police Department stated 29 people were arrested after a crowd of demonstrators marched onto the 101 Freeway, prompting its shutdown.

Trevor, another demonstrator that wanted his last name omitted for anonymity, expressed his hopes for the future of the US populous, “We can’t expect him to step down, so I just hope that it’s healthy venting for a couple days… and then somehow

we can just go back to life as normal.”

Dozens of protests against Trump’s presidency have spurred across the country in mainly Democratic cities like Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle, some of which did not transpire as peacefully as the ones in LA.

In Oakland, 30 protesters were arrested and 11 were cited, according to Oakland police. The alleged crimes were vandalism, firearm pos-

session, failure to disperse, and assault on an officer, police said.

In the midst of an anti-Trump rally in Seattle, five people were shot and wounded in front of a 7-Eleven after an argument broke out.

According to Seattle Police, an unidentified man stepped away from the argument and began to open fire into a crowd of people who were not involved in the altercation.

Police are still looking for the unidentified shooter, an adult male. Police emphasized that the shooting was not at all related to the protest.

Hillary Clinton made statements Wednesday that matched the tone of Trump’s winning speech, where he vouched that it was “..time for America to bind the wounds of division.”

“Our nation is more deeply divided than we thought… we owe him an open mind and a chance to lead,” Clinton said.

Protests continue across the country while citizens keep an ongoing effort to express their dismay towards the President-elect, who will be inaugurated Jan. 20.

Protests at Dakota Access Pipeline Lead to Arrests JAKE LAURELL Reporter

Deia Schlosberg, a journalist, was arrested and is facing felony charges in North Dakota over taping the unrest over the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Schlosberg, who filmed the critically acclaimed How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change documentary, was charged with three felonies: conspiracy to theft of property, conspiracy to theft of services, and conspiracy to tampering with or damaging a public service.

Schlosberg was arrested while filming and documenting the protests at a pipeline station near Walhalla, North Dakota. She could face up to 45 years in prison.

Prosecutors in North Dakota are proclaiming that Schlosberg was recruited into recording illegal activity.

The Dakota Access Pipeline is a pipeline being constructed through heartland of the US. The DAPL project extends from the northwestern edge of North Dakota, to near the southern tip of Illinois.

The land is considered burial grounds for all the tribes’ ancestors and is a place of prayer.

While the government is set on having the pipeline constructed, their efforts have not gone unopposed.

The Standing Rock Tribe

have been protesting the pipeline construction, along with people from across the country, and indigenous tribes from around the world that sympathize with their cause.

Law enforcement has come down hard on the demonstrators, and soldiers with

IED resistant armored trucks, UAV drones, and planes have all been deployed in the use against the protesters.

Reports of rubber bullets and mace being used against unarmed protesters have surfaced, as well as over 400 arrests of civilians and journalists.

Famous actors have come to the protests and showed their support. Actress Shailene Woodley was arrested for criminal trespassing.

Democracy Now published an article featuring an interview with Dallas Goldtooth, the organizer with the Indigenous Environmental Network. Goldtooth said in the interview that they caught a security guard worker armed near the protest.

In a YouTube video you can see the accused, Kyle Thompson, dressed as a water protector protester, wearing a red bandana along with holding an AR-15 assault rifle. Thompson was eventually detained by the Bureau of Indian Affairs police after a tense moment between him and the protesters.

From there Goldtooth described how they found Thompson’s security guard ID with the insurance of his truck belonging to the Dakota Access pipeline.

Thompson explained on a social media post that he was told by the pipeline company to go out there and take photos of a certain station.

President Obama stepped in September of this year placing a halt on the project, with construction still being done despite that order.

Berkeley High School Students March in Protest Day After Election SANDRA REYES Ads Manager

Protestors continued to flood streets across the nation after Donald Trump’s win of the presidential election. Students across California high schools staged walkouts, while many poured into streets and other California campuses.

Several East Bay school students staged walkouts, according to CBS San Francisco.

Berkley Unified School District Spokesman Charles Burress said that approximately 1500 students from Berkley High School participated in the walkouts.

“Donald Trump may be president, but we are going to make sure that this man, that he is going to prioritize the well being of the people, so please join us in this fight,” said an unidentified student during the protest to CBS SF.

High schoolers in Maryland and Southern California also participated in walkouts Nov. 14.

Prop 64 Legalizes Pot JAKE LAURELL Reporter

Proposition 64 has been passed in California. Prop 64 allows for the recreational use of marijuana to anyone over 21 years old in the state.

The measure passed with a staggering 56 percent of votes supporting the measure.

The measure now allows anyone above the age of 21 to carry up to an ounce of marijuana leaves or eight grams of concentrate, along with allowing citizens of the state to grow up to six plants.

The proposition allows the state to impose a 15 percent excise tax on all retail sales of marijuana in addition to the state sales tax. However, no one in the state can purchase recreational marijuana until Jan. 1st of 2018 according to the legislation.

By 2018, the state is required to have a system in place to give out business licences to sell recreational marijuana. The production, transportation, distribution, and retail will require a background check.

The background checks would exclude anyone with a previous felony convictions of fraud, drug trafficking, selling drugs to a minor, or any other felonies involving a minor. City and county governments are still involved in

determining whether recreational marijuana can be sold in their respective areas.

The new regulations also toughens the restrictions on preventing the sales of recreational marijuana to anyone under age of 21.

Prop 64 prohibits the sale of recreational marijuana to nonmedical users, and even prevents anyone underage from entering recreational facilities. The measure will also demand that cannabis products that can be misleading to children be repackaged in childproof containers.

Restrictions have also been placed on commercial advertising of any kind when it comes to recreational marijuana. No advertisements can appeal towards children.

Passing of the proposition does not allow smoking in public spaces, but anyone of age can smoke in their homes. Smoking marijuana near schools or daycare centers will still be illegal.

Citizens in vehicles that are out in public can still be fined as well. Minors caught smoking out in public are required to attend a mandatory drug education program and may be required to perform 10 hours of community service.

Anyone possessing marijuana cannot violate federal interstate commerce laws.

Shooting in Azusa Leaves One Dead and Two Wounded DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

The shooting in Azusa ended when the man suspected of fatally shooting one man and wounding two women was found by police shot dead near a home entry after being shot during the shoot-out with police.

The shooting occurred Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. near houses in the 500 block of 4th Street, near Memorial Park according to a KTLA 5 report.

The incident caused the lockdown of a nearby middle school and closure of two polling places, Memorial Park North Recreation Center and Dalton Elementary School.

Voters had to relocate to a different polling place while police dealt with the situation.

One of the women shot was able to get away and screamed for help. One woman was shot in the face while the other received multiple shots to the body. The two women, ages 59 and 67, were airlifted to local hospitals.

Despite being able to contain the scene, police still advised neighbors to stay indoors through the evening.

The 45-year-old suspect lived in Azusa. There is no

clear motive, but the Los Angeles Times reported that he was high on cocaine.

The suspect’s cocaine high started in his home on Monday and got so bad that it made his family leave during the evening.

The man began his shooting spree firing at a woman driving a van causing her to crash into other cars.

A 77-year-old neighbor left his house to investigate the disturbance when he was fatally shot by the suspect. The other woman was wounded as she was making her way down the street during the shoot out with police.

Neither women have been able to talk to the police.

Both are in critical condition.

The gunman later ambushed police as they came to help the victims. He reportedly fired at least 20 rounds at law enforcement according to Los Angeles Times. Officers took cover and began firing back before the gunman fled into a home, no officers were injured.

A robot was used by police officials to make sure that the suspect was dead as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

It is not clear whether it

was a self-inflicted gunshot or if police shot him.

There was no connection made between the shootings and elections according to a CNN report. The nearby school was also a coincidence.

The suspect was a city employee in Orange County and was previously in the military. At the time of the shooting, the suspect was wearing military fatigues.

He was heavily armed with a handgun, rifle, and shotgun.

The shooting was a surprise to the neighborhood as it is generally considered a safe place to live by many residents with family.

Jason Jonasson, a resident of Azusa, in a Los Angeles Times report said “It’s a nice neighborhood. My wife, myself, and the kids walk our dogs every night. My daughters play basketball here. It’s safe.”

Voters in the polling station during the shooting were later evacuated and led to other places to cast their ballots.

A famous line from a famous show, Star Trek. This show stands as one of the few shows that showed an optimistic view into space travel.

To learn and understand the universe. That idea stands today for the many astronomers and astrophysicists around the world. This is why the Hubble Space Telescope was created.

April 24, 1990, The Hubble Space Telescope was launched. It has made 1.2 million observations since then and data from the Hubble has had 14,000 papers published. Hubble stands as the most productive scientific instrument ever built. With that said, Hubble is heading to the end of its days after 26 years of operation.

James Webb Space Tele-

scope is the next in line to replace the Hubble. JWST boasts the power to observe the beginning of the universe 13 billion years ago.

According to engadget. com “It’s equipped with a 21foot, gold-coated mirror array that can collect seven times more light than Hubble and scan the infrared spectrum to see through dust.” With its increased ability to collect light and see through dust, JWST can see farther and with more clarity than the Hubble.

This power will make finding exoplanets much easier. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star outside of earth’s solar system.

The hunt for extraterrestrial life has now become easier thanks to the JWST.

Astronomers will also be able to fill in the holes in our universe as it is so expansive.

The dark spots in the night sky actually house millions of stars that aren’t bright enough to shine through the ones closer to Earth. JWST will make viewing of some of these stars much easier essentially brightening the night sky.

October of 2018 in the Ariane 5 rocket designed by the European Space Agency. It will be folded up in the spacecraft and will unfurl itself on its way out of the Earth’s atmosphere. In order for the JWST to do its job it must be cooled to -220 degrees Celsius

or -364 Fahrenheit. It has 5 hair thin membrane layers to shield it from the sun to maintain this temperature.

The construction of the JWST has already ended and is currently being tested for any and all problems it may face on its way into space.

Due to the distance it will cover, JWST will be impossible to repair. It is too expensive and too far to attempt any repair after launch.

NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency have collaborated to create the

Birds use their Beaks as Air Conditioners ANDREW RUDIN Science and Technology Editor

Birds’ beaks have evolved in many ways for many different situations. They can dig deep for food. Some can poke deep into flowers.

These different uses vary quite vastly around the world. A new study published in The Auk: Ornithological Advances, the journal of The American Ornithologists’ Union shows that the beak’s internal structure is complex, designed to help cool birds in warm climates.

Raymond Danner of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and his colleagues from Cornell University and the National Museum of Natural History gathered specimens from two Song Sparrow subspecies. One from an area with little moisture and a warmer climate and the other found further inland where it is cooler. They examined the nasal conchae of the bird bills.

According to allaboutbirds.org, “Nasal conchae are complex structures inside bird bills that moderate the temperature of air being inhaled and reclaim water from

air being exhaled.”

Danner and his group found that the conchae structure had a larger surface area and sat farther out within the beak in Song Sparrows found in warmer climates. The structures in Song Sparrows found in cooler climates were smaller and more condensed in general. The larger surface area in warm climated Sparrows hypothetically increased their beaks’ ability to cool air and recapture water.

The birds used in this study were preserved in ethanol and iodine. They were then CT scanned and were shown more clearly as the chemicals concentrated the soft tissues. This technique is quite new to Ornithologists, scientists who devote their studies to birds, and, therefore, open up a new world of understanding for these scientists.

Jason Bourke, a researcher from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences not involved in the study says, “Thanks to the use of innovative techniques like diceCT, we are now able to really appreciate just how complicated bird noses can be.”

Again, not every team has been announced, but with the current line-up, this already looks like an exciting tournament. IEM Oakland currently showcases 6 of the currently ranked top ten teams in the world ranked by the Esports Historian, Duncan “Thorin” Shields.

SK Gaming is a very prominent name in the CS:GO Esports community.

This is a Brazilian team that came from a relatively unim-

pressive region. They climbed the ranks lead by Gabriel ‘Fallen’ Toledo. Fallen took the role of In-Game Leader for his teams and committed to growing and improving the CS:GO scene in Brazil.

Under his leadership, his Luminosity line-up won a major, a world championship type tournament besting the greatest teams in the world.

They have fallen to third in rankings, but their skills are not to be overlooked as they can still make deep runs.

Ninjas in Pajamas is another top ten team that have shown a bit of a resurgence in recent tournaments.

greatest team in the world in the early days of CS:GO with an 87-0 victory over every offline tournament. This is a feat that no other team has ever accomplished and may never will due to the level of competition that stands today. NiP has fallen from those days of dominance, but with their current form they may show a great performance in this tournament.

Natus Vincere is the third ranked team in this tournament boasting the arguable best player in the world in s1mple. Na’Vi is a historically dangerous team with the legendary player GuardiaN, but with s1mple they have now become a powerhouse in recent history. S1mple has one of the strongest rifle play while also being a hybrid awper, the strongest sniper in the game. This range of skill puts opponents in the backseat as he can out aim most opponents. GuardiaN is the star awper of the team and with s1mple can devastate enemies with a double awp setup, effectively shutting down almost anyone they face.

This current line-up of teams show great promise for IEM. The tournament still has to announce the rest of the teams participating, but with the current line-up, fans of either game will already gather to watch a great event

Overwatch’s New Season DANNY CELIZ Station Manager

Game developer Blizzard finally made some exciting Overwatch announcements at Blizzcon that include a new Hero to play, Sombra, as well as new game modes for the Overwatch community to enjoy. While the new Hero and game modes aren’t out officially on the game, those players who have the PC version of the game can sign into a public test region (PTR) and get a headstart on their console kinsmen.

Sombra, is a new offense Hero that offers a bit more stealth strategy than your average point and click offensive Heroes. She is a hacker in the lore of the game, thus her main ability is hacking. How this works in game is that she can hack enemy players to temporarily render their abilities useless, and hack aid kits to only heal her team rather than everyone. This can be perfect for when opponents are rushing towards the payload as teammates

can start tacking on damage while Sombra hacks aid kits to stop enemies from healing and be forced to rely on support classes for health. At this moment, she can hack the support classes to stop them from healing thus leaving the opponents helpless.

Another ability is that she can “phase” through the map, making her temporarily “invisible.” In this state, she can’t shoot or attack without compromising herself, however she does gain a movement speed increase that can help her get away from bad situations or set up a stealthy ambush.

Sombra’s last ability gives her a grenade-like item that can be thrown anywhere on the map. Once this item is placed, she can teleport to that exact location. This can be used to set up ambushes in which she can not only hack, but call out placements of enemies to teammates.

Sombra’s ultimate is an EMP bomb that temporarily shuts off all opponent’s abilities and ultimates from use. This

is very useful for pushing through with the payload because a simple EMP bomb will stop the opposing players from countering your attacks.

Along with her abilities she comes with an SMG that has quite a bit more ammo than other guns in the game, however has a huge kickback while shooting. While it isn’t as accurate as other Heroes, like Solider 76, there is enough ammo to justify a few mistakes. Unlike Tracer, who has very little ammo and needs to land her shoots perfectly to be effective.

Besides the new Hero there is also host of new game modes under a new menu choice called Arcade mode. In this mode players, can choose from a different game types that add a twist to the overall game. For example, Mystery Hero mode in which players are given a random Hero upon each spawn, and No Limit mode in which there are no limit on how many of the same Hero is on the field. The best of these modes has got to be the 1 vs

1 matches. A simple game of one player against another, however there are no aid kits to heal. First one to die claims a win and first to five wins the game. Each round does give players a random Hero, so it is recommended to understand how to play each Hero before jumping in. In this new Arcade mode, players can rank up a weekly stat that can award loot boxes to players instead of the traditional way of getting boxes from leveling up.

There is still no date for when this patch will be up for Overwatch, however some have speculated that a patch will be released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One the 18th of November to coincide with the free to play weekend. Even if it doesn’t happen, gamers who want to see what Overwatch is all about can download the game for free the 18th and see what all the fuss is about.

Lagunitas Beer Circus 2016 DANNY CELIZ KRHC Station Manager

Lagunitas Brewery is known for its excellent IPA craft beers, but they are also known for throwing yearly parties at their own breweries in celebration of good times and good beer. Beer Circus is an event where fans of Lagunitas gather together for “Freaktacular entertainment, fresh beer, and live music.”

With the event hitting places like Chicago, New York, Petaluma, and Azusa California it is a great chance to see the brewery in action and let loose.

With doors opening at noon, guest that managed to arrive early were treated to long lines in the 102-degree weather, crowds of people with a few that already had a pregame session before, and lots of clowns running around.

Once the gates opened, guests were quickly given their wristbands that not only gained them entrance, but a free beer and a token that got them another beer.

Once past the gate into the sunny area, the sights and sounds of the event were something straight out of a circus, except that this particular circus has beer in the spotlight.

A huge main stage took up much of the event in which the Grand Master of the event took welcomed everyone in attendance. Once the typical welcome spiel was given, the Grand Master let an array of different bands play on the stage to help fill the event with live music.

To stay in line with the circus theme, there was some entertainment that fell under the slogan, “see things that you can’t un-see.”

Opening was a woman that was pole dancing on a swinging pendulum that swung over the heads of onlookers.

Right after was a women that arose from a pool of water and then proceeded

to climb up two cloth ribbons while performing tricks.

Once the performers finished their event, guest gathered inside the brewery for a burlesque show in which everyone could enjoy the show having both genders participate on stage.

Once the sun started to reach the peak of heat, many people took it as a sign to drink even more beer. This was where the difference between regular admission and

VIP makes a big difference.

Guests that only had regular admission would have to purchase beer tokens to get more beer.

All guests were given a free beer as well as a token for entering, so anything after those two beers wasn’t free.

The best part was that token prices were reasonable, with a pack of five going for just ten dollars, and with beer only costing a single token, a single guest could have their

fill of beer with only just a few bucks.

VIPs on the other hand had a special section roped off just for them that had unlimited free beer.

Needless to say, this was El Paisano’s spot the majority of the event.

Once the beers set in, it was time to have some fun with some good old fashion carnival games. Thankfully, these games weren’t rigged and almost everyone playing

was winning some sort of Lagunitas merchandise. If fair games aren’t appealing, there were two fair “rides” (if you can call them rides) to enjoy.

One was just a carousel with bikes mounted on it that allowed riders to pedal to make the ride go as fast as they wanted.

The last ride had the same pedal mechanics but it was built for only two riders.

Each rider would sit on opposite ends and pedal to spin faster.

If guests are going to drink to their heart's content, there must be food to go with it. Sadly, this was the only part of the event that was bad about the experience.

There was a total of six food trucks parked within the arena, all ranging from burgers, pickles, and even pupusas. Some of these food trucks have even been on television before and are famous for their unique flavors, however this was when the experience gets sour.

Lines weren’t the problem, waiting twenty minutes to place an order in an event like this was expected.

The problem was that most of these trucks only had a staff of three or less working.

El Paisano staff placed an order and didn’t receive food for nearly an hour and a half even though the staff was quoted a 15-minute wait time. Between people complaining to get refunds or crowds exclaiming that food was delivered to random people it was a disaster that hindered this experience only slightly.

Overall this was an amazing event to take part of and could not think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. For those looking to attend next year, simply follow Lagunitas Brewery on Facebook or Twitter for when tickets go on sale.

The reason you might want to follow them is that this event has always seemed to sell out fast, especially if you want VIP tickets, but it is an experience that beer lovers will never forget.

Works of art brought to life at the Wray ROSE LOZA Reporter

Jane Zwerneman, Assistant Director of the Stuart Collection, visited Rio Nov. 8 and held a presentation at the Wray Theater.

Zwerneman discussed the public art collection, which features site-specific works made by 18 different artists around the UC San Diego campus. Some artists in the collection include Bruce Nauman, Do Ho Suh, and Tim Hawkinson.

Nauman’s piece Vices and Virtues consists of neon blinking lights forming seven overlapping word pairs that contain virtues such as faith, hope,charity and their vices such as lust, envy, and sloth. They wrap around the Charles Lee Powell Structural Systems Laboratory.

Hawkinson’s sculpture titled Bear is a 23’6’’ high bear made out of eight granite stones. It was the 16th sculpture added to the university.

The figure is a toy bear and is said to be the teddy bear of the campus.

Suh’s work, Fallen Star, is a house that hangs off the edge of the seventh floor of the Jacobs School of Engineering. Until recently, it has been the last sculpture added.

The house is complete with a garden in the front giving it a homey vibe. Since it tilts off the edge of the building, the interior of the house is lopsided. While inside, it is common for people to get nauseous and dizzy, so they have someone that assures everyone is fine.

All of the pieces are captivating and appeared to be worth the visit, if around the San Diego campus. Many of the works are quirky and extraordinary.

Zwerneman spent the last couple of minutes having an open Q&A session between herself and audience members, talking about the public art and upcoming projects for the collection.

Zwerneman mentions that a new installment to the current works will be a sound environment done by music artist John Luther Adams.

The Wind Garden is set to be an outside piece that will be heard instead of seen. The work will feature benches to sit on and listen to the music coming from eucalyptus trees.

The collection is free to visit, aside from parking permits, as it is located around different areas of the campus.

However, the sculpture Fallen Star is open only on Tues. and Thurs. from 11a.m to 2p.m.

The Stuart Collection was

founded in 1981 by Richard Atkinson and James Stuart DeSilva who had the collection named after him.

DeSilva was not only the founder but was also the main benefactor in the collection.

The first sculpture added in the collection was Sun God

by Niki de Saint Phalle in 1983.

The sculpture is a 14 foot bird who stands on top of a 15 foot concrete arch. Phalle’s most notable work is the Nanas that celebrates feminism regarding the women’s bodies.

The Stuart Collection is always accepting donations to help the maintenance of current pieces and to also help fund new sculptures to add on.

Theres going to be a social change of course, you know that what he’s all about.

spectives, its more on about following Barack Obamas same perspective and same standpoint and same regime that he had carried throughout his 8 years.

For Donald’s Trump side, hes change, he is all about promoting change.

I’m not surprised. I have had many friends that have tried to convince me to vote for him and the person i voted for yesterday, that was my first time participating.

I just feel like my opinion is strong right now in the sense of realizing what the

direction america is going in, as a united nation, it is going in a direction that in my opinion, isnt right.

But i feel that him as president isn’t going to make a gigantic, huge immense impact on me personally.

But i know people who

are close to people who aren’t citizens to the united states and they called me last night saying “oh im scared, me and my family are scared.”

So i have the fear of donald trump not because of my personal status as an american but people that i’m close

too are expressing their fears.

To carry that weight on my shoulders of wanting to be responsible, of wanting to have justice and change for those people And my family and myself.

My thoughts are complete and utter disappointment but also passion to continue to move forward as minority groups and people whose voices have not yet been heard.

I believe that as a minority group, we have constantly

gone over obstacles time and time again and i feel like a lot of the trump supporters were afraid of us rising and getting our rightful place and position.

Because our nation was built on the backbones of all of our minorities and every

immigrant that ever came to our nation.

I believe that the trump supports are in fear of us finally taking what we deserve and finally having our voices being heard.

when our time comes, and our voices are finally

heard we won’t be silent.

I voted for Trump. My reasoning for voting for him aren’t based on me being a hidden bigot, disrespecting women’s rights, nor not appreciating the helpfulness of Planned Parenthood, but rather that I am tired of the same political pattern.

A politician makes promises that excitec the masses to vote for said candidate.

Once sworn into office, that representative never follows through with the promises which in return the masses complain stating “worst Pres-

ident ever.”

Trump isn’t a politician, which means he can’t be corrupted by the greed of the government or follow within the footprints of the others that came before him.

Can I say for sure that he will be the change America needs? No, but can anyone else say for sure either?

No. All I am saying is that America needs to take a chance and give it the old coin flip. If it’s heads then America prospers, if tails then in four years everyone

can say “we told you so.”

As for the results and the people upset by the results and by how much hate is still left in the world, all I can say is get over it.

Naturally, man hates man. Not everyone is going to stand in a circle and sing hymns of togetherness.That is frankly never going to be the case in our lifetime.

There is always going to be someone out there at hates you based on your skin color, gender, or personality.

Consider this election to

be a wakeup call for everyone.

Mommy and Daddy aren’t here to protect you from abhorrence, so it’s time to grow a thicker shell and toughen up.

Because while someone in your own country might hate you for those reasons, there are countries out there that not only hate you for that, but also want to kill you for being American.

Grow up, move on, and help this nation stand up against those who wish our nation harm.

...an airplane. He was excited to be flying over the clouds for the first time ever, thinking he was heading over to the promise land, Disneyland because why does anyone travel to United States except to visit Disneyland.

In reality things were far different because he was heading over to Tijuana International Airport unaware of what was to come.

Rosa wanted to give young “Paco” a better life and future. A life that was promised by friends that were living in Los Ángeles.

A life of love, success and glamour so reminiscent of many of Hollywood’s blockbusters.

The Journey from Mexico to California, however, did not become easy, let alone safe. “Paco” and his mother encountered the same risky dangers that all individuals trying to cross into the U.S. border every year face.

After arriving in Tijuana, Baja California, “Paco,” his mother and uncle did not hang around for long. They bought bus tickets and trav-

eled to Mexicali, the capital city of the Mexican state of Baja California.

In the middle of the humid Mexicali night, they stepped out of the bus with many people following behind, and he and his mother were greeted by coyotes, a group of human smugglers crossing migrants into the the side of the U.S. border, at a motel where he, Rosa and Gerardo, along with other, men, women and children, waited a couple of hours to make the first attempt at crossing.

“The memory of that night is unclear, so I cannot accurately explain how things unfolded. My mother can give precise details of what actually occurred, said “Paco” when interviewed about his life.”

“I do remember wearing cowboy boots with darkwashed jeans, and a small dressing shirt with wild horses on it.”

The coyotes directed him, his mother and uncle with other people to a hole that was cut through the tall metal fence that separates Mexico from United States.

The fence had been cut through by a welding torch.

The coyotes told everyone to

follow along and run as fast as Usain Bolt doing the 100 freestyle race, heading towards a flickering light un the distance, which was what the coyotes called “the safe zone” meaning that everyone would be free of border patrol.

“The road was dark, scary, and confusing, almost like as if the entire trail was nothing but a blur, a dream, not real, he stated.

“I held onto my mother’s hand with my uncle by my other side, and I ran as fast as I was able to, so my mother and uncle would not lose sight of me.”

They ran through bushes, trees, muddy ground, rocks and grass, afraid of falling into a hole or being bitten by a snake or other wild animals.

“Maybe the coyotes would’ve left us all there, robbed or killed us. Time seemed to stand still, the skies would not lit up, and the flickering light in the distance was never reached,” he added.

To their surprise, a border patrol van was following behind. The coyotes made everyone duck down, but border patrol carried infrared equipment that picked up everyone’s heat signal, leading border patrol to the exact

whereabouts of “Paco” and all others.

The border patrol officer had backup and then proceeded to place Paco his mother, uncle, the coyotes, and the others inside the vans.

“That night mom and I and my uncle, slept un a small cell, on hard bedding, and a dirty floor, crowded with the other men, women and children.”

The cells had no toilet paper and the smell was unbearable for him. Next morning, everyone was released back into Mexico in the sweltering heat.

Border patrol warned them to avoid crossing over again or face possible arrest.

“Paco,” along with his mother and uncle, headed back to the hotel to clean up and change out of their stinky, muddy clothes, and that same day the coyotes moved them over to a different location to avoid that Mexican police scouted their hotel.

“On the second attempt my mother and I separated from my uncle.

I remember a few days later my uncle telling me that he climbed the tall metal fence, and he showed me the evidence, his bloody, boiled hands that were burn marks left by the hot metal do to the 100 plus heat,”...

The key word in your question is “balance.” Living within your means calls for doing a monthly budget before the month begins. Scrutinize where every dollar is going. Give every dollar a name. By doing this you can see where maybe cutting out those daily visits to Starbucks will give you the extra money for that dinner out, or movies with friends. Once you take control of where your dollars are going you can start to make choices about what is and is not important to you. Living within your budget doesn’t mean you can’t do some of the things your friends are doing; it means you are choosing, among the many social activities, the ones that bring you the most joy. It’s all about balance.

I’m not saying this is going to be easy, because it’s not. Media messages are constantly telling us to buy more, do more, look like this, or act like that. With so many distractions, it can be difficult to appreciate what you have right now. But by choosing to be thankful, you can ignore these messages and embrace contentment.

Contentment is at the core of money management and building long-term wealth. No matter how much money you have or how committed you are to living within your means on a well planned budget, there will always be someone who makes more money than you or doing things you can’t afford to do. If you don’t embrace contentment at the soul level, you will never reach your financial goals and will always be comparing yourself to others doomed to a life of “stuffitis” envy. I know because I suffer from the same disease of “stuffitis”—but I am recovering and so can you. The human spirit was not created to attain peace, contentment, or fulfillment by gathering more stuff.

Rio Hondo College men’s basketball team lose to MiraCosta College 81-70

After the Rio Hondo men’s basketball participated in the Miramar Tournament to start their new 2016-2017 season, the Roadrunners played at home for the first time this season to take on MiraCosta College.

The tournament, which took place Nov. 3-5 at San Diego Miramar College, saw Rio Hondo match up against Cerritos College, Santa Ana College and Southwestern College.

Rio dropped their first game against Cerritos in a 7774 loss, but managed to beat Santa Ana and Southwestern 64-60 and 67-54 respectively.

While it was a successful tournament for Rio winning two of three games, it would not be a successful homecoming as MiraCosta quickly seized control quickly with their perimeter shooting.

MiraCosta forward Brady Twomby fired from long range, hitting all four of his first three-point attempts and quickly sent the Roadrunners into a double digit deficit that made it hard to recover.

Joining Twomby in the scoring column was his team-

mate Brett Hollins who also was in double digit scoring by the time the first half was over, leaving Rio Hondo down by 42-30.

Rio Hondo head coach Mike Lowe said his team “didn’t execute very well” in the first half, but talked about three things that they wanted to focus on to start the second half.

Defending Twomby and Hollins much better, moving the ball better and going on a run were the three things Lowe mentioned to his team and the team responded by heeding his message.

Twomby did not score a basket in the second half until the six minute mark and Hollins was kept in check by multiple Rio defenders.

The ball movement was much better, leading to open shots and a 18-9 run to begin the second half got the Roadrunners within one.

Rio Hondo forward Trevon Welch and guard Josiah Sotomayor tried their best to keep Rio Hondo in the game and get the lead, both scoring 15 points each but could not catch the Spartans, losing 8170.

The Roadrunners could

not get their perimeter game to be consistent, going 8-30 from three point range and shooting an overall 36.8% for the entire game.

DeShaun Carr, who averaged 15 points on 13 of 19 shooting during the Miramar Tournament, did not look to shoot the ball, finishing with 10 points on 2 of 5 shooting with six of those from the free throw line, four rebounds and two assists..

After the game, Lowe mentioned that they “did a better job of taking the two better players out and moved the ball a little better and we had a nice little run to get within one.”

“We were not able to sustain it and I think it was because of getting down early and we didn’t recognize their better players quick enough.”

With only one thing to improve for the Roadrunners after the loss to MiraCosta, Lowe said “ [their] focus to start the game.”

The Roadrunner’s focus will be on their next games in the El Camino Tournament at El Camino College and will face off against MiraCosta, Moorpark College and Santa Ana Nov. 17-19.

Nicole Robbins signs National Letter of Intent to play tennis at Ottawa University next Fall CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor

Nicole Robbins, 19, of Rio Hondo College officially signed her national letter of intent Nov. 10 and will be continuing her academic and athletic career playing tennis at Ottawa University in Kansas next fall.

Robbins played varsity tennis for South Hills High School in West Covina for four years before coming to Rio Hondo immediately after and has been playing at Rio for her past two years attending the college.

“It hasn’t really hit me yet, but I know it’s going to be a new and exciting experience to play tennis for Ottawa University” said Robbins.

University, this was his first year as the head coach of the team and he will finish out the fall season while the search for a permanent coach continues.

One major difference between tennis in California and tennis in Kansas is the fact that the sport is played indoors in Kansas due to snowy weather conditions as opposed to outdoors in California, where the sun shines almost 365 days a year.

“I’ve never played indoor tennis, and it’s all indoor in Ottawa because it snows during their regular season” said Robbins regarding the change of courts she will encounter.

This is something that a few former Rio Hondo College athletes have had to adjust to coming from a warmer state like California, but the

exposure to different playing conditions makes for a great and new learning experience.

Ottawa University has recruited Rio Hondo College athletes in the past few years, with both women’s soccer and volleyball players transferring there to continue their academic and athletic careers as well.

Robbins will finish off her studies at Rio Hondo College and will play tennis next spring when the season starts before she transfers to Ottawa University in Fall ‘17 where she will compete in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

After two great years at Rio Hondo College, Robbins said “I’m really sad to be leaving Rio Hondo, but this school definitely has prepared me for the next level.

Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team crowned South Coast Conference North Division champions Third consecutive conference title under Head Coach Jennifer Tanaka

After an impressive season with an overall record of 13-1-5, the Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team led by Head Coach Jennifer Tanaka, was named the 2016 Southern California South Coast Conference North Division champions.

The Lady Roadrunners went undefeated in conference getting a record of 5-0-3 to secure the championship, and only lost one non-conference game this season

to defending state champions Cerritos College.

The Lady Roadrunners started off their last week of conference play with a home game against Mt. San Antonio College Nov. 8.

Prior to the game, sophomores said their farewell to one another as they prepared to play their last home game of the season.

The Lady Roadrunners went on to win the game against the Mounties, with Erika Lizarraga scoring the only goal of the

game after breaking free and carrying the ball all the way up to the opposing goalie after an assist from Madison Mader before putting the shot past the goalkeeper putting the game at 1-0 in favor of Rio Hondo.

Mt. SAC was unable to get back into the game and the Lady Roadrunners were able to get the win in front of their home crowd.

Next on the list for Rio Hondo was a road game against Chaffey College Nov. 11. The Lady Roadrunners closed out their conference with a 1-0 win

against Chaffey College and a three game winning streak to give them their first ever South Coast Conference North Division championship after previously competing in the Foothill Conference.

Freshman Daisy Gallegos broke free to score the only goal of the match against Chaffey College after an assist from Erika Lizarraga in the first half that sealed the deal for the Lady Roadrunners undefeated conference this season.

After winning the title, Rio

Hondo secured an automatic berth into the Southern California Regional Playoffs which commence on Nov. 19.

This is the third consecutive conference title for the Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team and for head coach Tanaka as the team prepare for playoffs.

Congratulations to the Lady Roadrunners for another excellent season as they now await the Southern California Regional Playoff seedings that will be announced next week.

Roadrunners men’s soccer team struggles against Mt. San Antonio College Mounties, losing 1-0

Struggling throughout the entire season, the men’s soccer team at Rio Hondo College had only one thing in mind and it was to finish off their last game at home against the South Coast Conference leading team, Mt. San Antonio College.

Mt. SAC has been nothing less than spectacular this season coming into the game with a record of 14-22, dominating most of their opponents this season except for Rio Hondo, who were responsible for one of their two draws this season.

For Rio, the season has been one roller coaster ride

over and over again, going 9-2-8 with wins and ties coming in bunches.

Both teams hoped it would be different, with the Roadrunners still having a chance to at least share the conference if they were to win against the Mounties.

With high stakes on the line and the last game for sophomore players, both Mt. SAC and Rio played the game tightly in the first half with every attempt to score always thwarted by the other team’s defensive players.

Each team gave their best shot in the first half and it was much of the same in the second until Mt. SAC finally scratched and got the first

goal.

Martin Arrieta set up Michael Flores for the opener of the game after a poor clearance by Rio led to a scramble and a 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners tried their best to tie the game up but the number one team decided by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Men’s Soccer Poll, effectively shut down any chance Rio Hondo had to level the game.

The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 9-3-8 overall and a third place standing in the conference with 2-1-4 record.

Rio will finish the regular season on the road playing Chaffey College Nov. 10 at 3 p.m.
