5th Annual ‘A Taste of Rio’ Continues to Raise Funds for Students at Rio Hondo College

A Taste of Rio, a yearly event where members of the community pledge themselves to the enjoyment of food, drink, and the promise of a future for rio hondo students. This year’s sold out event had a mix of local restaurants, silent auctions, and celebrity guests including

Senator Tony Mendoza and Teresa Dreyfuss.

Aside from such contributors as Lagunitas brewing company, Doubletree, Lift Coffee Roasters, Seta, and California Grill, the event featured the mariachi stylies of the Trio Renacimiento, whose light latin sounds entertained everyone for most of the night. The food was completely fantastic, with

each of the 18+ businesses contributing the best food and drink they could possibly offer.

“There’s so much going on in Rio Hondo right now…

Based on what I’m seeing and experiencing, Rio Hondo has a close knit family and most of all, the benefit here is going to be the students,” said Mendoza

Pertaining to the benefit

of the students is the foundation being funded. The most prominent way to contribute to the event was the Fund-a-Scholarship Drawing.

With $100 donation price of a ticket, the entirety of the profit goes toward the Rio Hondo College Foundation Scholarship support for first year students and transfer students. The foundation has given out 150 awards, containing 100,000 dollars in scholarships “The foundation staff actually trains students on how to apply for the scholarships.

One of the most important things they should know is that there’s a writing section… All scholarships are available to all students, you just have to apply, we don’t go to you,” said Executive director of the RHC Foundation, Howard Kummerman. Kummerman went into greater details on the scholarships on their application processes.

“We really want every student to excel in their direction. Every job, whether you’re a teacher or a senator, it’s about this place helping you find your passion, which is what rio hondo is really all about.”

Student trustee member Brandon Pablo Leon discussed how the event has literally helped him in the past. “This is a great event, students really benefit from this, I’ve gotten scholarships from this so I know for me it really helped me get by.”

RHC to Launch Rio Hondo College Promise with Free Tuition for First-Year Students

Rio Hondo College Promise, a comprehensive student support program launching in 2017-2018 that includes one year’s free tuition and priority registration for 2017 graduates of all Whittier Union, El Monte Union and El Rancho Unified high schools and private schools within the college service area. The initiative will support first-year students with academic counseling and transfers to four-year universities.

Launch Event, 10 a.m., Wray Theater: College leaders will outline the Rio Hondo College Promise to 200 high school students from Whittier Union, El Monte Union and El Rancho Unified school districts.

Long Time Adminstrator, VPAA, Dr. Joanna Schilling Becomes Cyprus College’s President ZACKARY MEJIA Managing Editor

This semester Rio Hondo College not only bids farewell to Spring 2017 graduates but also to Interim Vice President Dr. Joanna Schilling.

After meeting with Cypress College’s board of trustees, and addressing the college’s campus community at an open forum, with five other finalists, Schilling was chosen as the school’s 12th president. Schillings will succeed the current president, Dr. Bob Simpson, at the beginning of July.

While Schilling’s transition will be not be easy, Cypress and Rio Hondo’s campus have much in common. Both schools face similar problems and have a similar number of students, Cypress’s campus numbering at 16,000 and Rio Hondo’s at 19,000.

An issue that is currently plaguing both community colleges is student enrollment. Schilling attributes the fluctuation of student enrollment to the status of the economy. Enrollment tends to increase when employment is difficult, and decreases when students prioritize work.

“What we want to do is balance that”, said Schilling, “So we want to make sure the students are coming to improve their career opportunities, rather than just taking the short term jobs…One of the jobs of this office is to find creative ways that we can support students so that they can complete their degree and stay in school and not have to work 40 hours a week while they are taking two or three classes.”

An insufficiency of student pursuit in higher education is not the only consequence to low enrollment numbers, but the funds of the college also suffer. Community colleges receive funds from the state based off of student enrollment. The less number of students enrolled from one semester to the next reduces the number of funds that is available to support academic programs and pay salaries.

After familiarizing herself with both the students and faculty of Cypress college, Schilling wants to create a student spotlight project called “My Cypress Story.” where each month a student is highlighted with video

interviews and posters to promote student excellence.

“Always putting the students at the center and hearing our students’ stories makes a big impact on everybody on the campus because it reminds [them] of what their needs are,”said Schilling.

Student selection would be based off of faculty recommendations or an open application that students can enter.

Schilling’s new role as president of Cypress College will change how she manages the school’s administration.

She will be transitioning from a hands on managerial role, where she oversaw the development of new programs, grants, and curriculum, to more of a public image of the college.

She will be charged with creating a vision for the col-

lege’s future, in terms of programs and construction, and handling the fiscal responsibility that will be required to fulfill the vision.

“The president’s job is to create a clear vision for the college and make sure that we have the resources to reach that vision,” explained Schilling. “[The president] creates the vision, the team to do those things and makes sure that they have the money to pay for it.”

Schilling has a diverse background extending beyond Rio Hondo. She served on the board of the East Whittier Arts Foundation, as well as a juror for the Newport Beach Film Festival, and on the California Arts Council. She is a skilled playwright, screenwriter, and trained vocalist. She is well known in the arts and theater communities, as well

as Cerritos College, from her time as the school’s interim vice president.

Schilling is open to cross campus collaborations between Cerritos, Cypress, and Rio Hondo. Having a history at all three college’s will be beneficial in establishing and maintaining contact with each school.

“My feeling is we’re serving the same mission,” said Schilling, “We have different students who have different needs at each college, but the bottom line is how are we helping our students…it’s about sharing and using good ideas.”

During her tenure as interim vice president, Schilling oversaw the acquisition of several prestigious grants for Rio Hondo.

In the last year, Rio Hondo has received two basic skills grants. They were pilot

partnership programs between Rio Hondo, K-12 partner schools, and CSULA to analyze the remediation issue with Math and English in all three systems, and find a way to reform the two subjects’ curriculum.

Schilling is proud that Rio Hondo was the only college in the state to receive basic both basic skills grants.

She has also been instrumental in developing partnerships with K-12 schools to provide college courses for students prior to coming to Rio Hondo.

Schilling worked with the offices of Henry Gee, vice president of student services, and Mike Muñoz, dean of counseling, to create president Teresa Dreyfuss’s “Rio Hondo College Promise”, an initiative that would cover the cost of incoming fall 2017 freshmen’s first year tuition.

The project will be financed through the Rio Hondo College Foundation.

Despite being a part of something as grand as free higher education, Schilling is most proud of her efforts at reducing the cost that students have to pay for books. She was able to obtain a grant for open educational resources to reduce cost of books. She believes that the grant is a good start towards eliminating the cost of books for students, but feels that it needs to be nurtured and developed for it to be fully realized.

Schilling’s main role in these department wide collaborations was to apply for the grants, provide the faculty that rewrites the curriculum with resources, and to ensure that the grant requirements are met.

Reflecting on her time as an administrator for Rio Hondo and the team she worked with, Schilling stated, “Rio Hondo has been my home for a very long time, I love this college and the students.

I couldn’t ask for a better team of dean’s, they’re and dedicated. I’m proud of the work that our college is doing because it’s going to make a big difference in our students’ success.”

In her short tenure as interim vice president, Schilling was a part of many progressive programs that will continue, should they be developed, to benefit the school in the years to come.

City of El Monte Hosts a Free Immigration Forum at Local Church

The City of El Monte and its partners hosted an informational forum on immigration and resource fair for community members at the Nativity Catholic Church April 27.

After a similar event called “Know Your Rights” seminar at the Grace T. Black auditorium in El Monte that was hosted by Congresswoman Grace Napolitano was interrupted by a Donald Trump supporter April 14, the city decided to hold another forum.

The forum, which was advertised with posters around the city, was calmer this time around with police officers surrounding the church in case of another situation.

While many were reluctant to come at the start because of the Trump Supporter incident, it took a while for the three hour forum to begin with it being pushed back to 6:30 p.m instead of 6 p.m.

Directed towards residents who are impacted by the changes in immigration laws, the forum featured community leaders, elected officials, and immigrant advocates that provided information on the status of undocumented immigrants.

After the dignitaries and guest speakers were introduced, the general discussion was held inside the church until 7 p.m as the rest of the other eight informational workshops began.

The workshops took place in buildings surrounding the church and included topics such as Detention/Deportation Defense, Temporary Protected Status, U.S Naturalization and Citizenship, and Deferred Actions for

Childhood Arrivals.

One El Monte woman named Ariana Briones who attended the event, thought it was “very informative” and addressed the concerns her family had as well, feeling comfortable and relaxed.

Briones mentioned she would come back if there were anymore events and recommended those that need help to come and learn more.

El Monte Mayor, Andre Quintero, thought the general reception to the event was positive from the residents and was satisfied with the turnout saying that he “hopes the word gets out about the success of the event so that more people will have confidence to come and get the information they need.”

As the general discussion was held in Spanish, Mayor Quintero said that that was not done purposely, saying he thought that they were going to do it in English and then have translation, but saw who was there and who they were serving that it just turned out that way.

As there is a disconnect with the current administration of the U.S and the rhetoric that they have chosen to communicate with “has made things very difficult and made people very anxious,” said Mayor Quintero.

“We want people to have confidence in their government, we want people to have confidence in police in particular so that if they’re a victim of a crime that they report it, that they’re not afraid to speak up because they’re afraid that they’ll be deported.”

As Mayor Quintero takes pride in the success of the event, he said there is not a plan yet to make another one saying that hopefully “we’ll be able to have it soon.”

City Hopping Shooting Spree CORBIN BOONE Reporter

One person died and three were wounded when an unidentified gunman went on a shooting spree through the cities of Whittier, Pico Rivera, and La Mirada on Saturday, April 29. The dead victim was only specified to be an older male and three wounded people were taken to nearby hospitals.

“The crime was unprovoked, and the victim of the homicide appeared to be completely innocent person” said Lieutenant Rodney Moore to the Los Angeles Times.

The shooting is said to have happened at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday after a carjacking in Pico Rivera. After the perpetrator left, he continued on his spree throughout La Mi-

rada at Santa Gertrudes. The suspect is said to have had a female partner in cahoots.

The couple were last known to have been in a green SUV (a Jeep Cherokee or a Nissan Pathfinder). Police found the car abandoned at 6:30 p.m. at Amelia Mayberry Park in Whittier, reported Deputy Ryan Rouzan.

The owner of the stolen vehicle is said to be unharmed but the status of the three other victims is unknown. There still has been no further information of the physical appearances of the two suspects, although a man and woman were arrested when found in a motel in Whittier. The arrested couple were armed and matched the description of the shooting suspects. The stolen vehicle found in the motel parking lot was different from the green SUV previously reported stolen but the couple is still held under suspicion.

Hundreds of people spent their first day of May gathering in Downtown L.A to protest the recent string of anti-immigration policies.

Calling it the MayDay March and Rally, taken from their website go.peoplepower.org, the groups declared their opposition to President Trump and his policies, stressing the message; No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcomed here!

In the morning a slowly building crowd of supporters gathered around Macarthur Park, the focal point being on the crossing of Wilshire blvd

and S Alvarado Street. Yesenia Rodriguez and her mother Paulina, arrived at the march in full Danza Azteca regalia.

The daughter and mother talked about their reasons for being there and why they were trying to show their roots.

“I came to support whats going on right now. Every person counts. I was born here but I am trying to show my roots. Even people born in Mexico it was taken away from them too. So us still keeping it alive I think it’s something important,” said Yesenia.

supporters filled the downtown area with declarations of “Sí se Puede!” “Family Fights Back” and “Build bridges not walls.” Around one pm they made their way to the Los Angeles City Hall which is where they were met by opposition from pro Trump supporters.

In anticipation of the clash, barricades were constructed between 1st and Spring street with dozens of police placed in the area. In the meeting of the two forces, declarations of “Build the wall” and “Whose Streets, our streets” were thrown at each side.

The police had built a wide barrier and were armed with batons, stun guns, non lethal rifles and face masks.

Latino American citizen Lenore Farris talked about her time as an immigrant and immigration as a whole.

“I came here in 1972 with two kids with a visa. I had five kids and I worked any job. We respect this country by paying taxes and being good citizens. [Should immigrants be deported] No. Not all immigrants, just the criminals.” As a latino Trump support, Farris discussed the positive attributions of restricting certain types of people into the country.

“On both sides no one is racist... we are not about that.

What we want is a peaceful law abiding country… We

want to let people in, but a lot of it became about Mexicans coming across the border,” said pro Trump protester Jeff R.He went on to describe that the focus is placed on the Mexican immigrants, when the attention should be placed on the undocumented immigrants that may have actual harm to the nation itself.

Slight altercations did take place, including the arrest of a pro Immigration marcher for assault with a bottle and a masked protester burning the american flag.

With over 100 organizations involved, the protest gathered together people who all wanted to have full rights for immigrants.

Armenian Genocide Memorial in Southern California LISA GARCIA Reporter

This past Wednesday I spent the day commemorating the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with marchers from all over southern California.

Being of Hispanic decent; I personally asked myself: “Rudy Pinedo, you’re a Mexican. What’s a guy like me going to a rally that has no ties or any significance to my culture?” Well, that’s the beauty of a march with such an impactful because; it has the ability to bring people from all backgrounds and

walks of life to stand along with one another in singularity to raise awareness to issues that truly impact our world.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the ‘Forgotten Genocide’, “The Armenian Genocide was administered by the Turkish government against the entire Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire.

It was carried out during W.W.I between 1915 and 1918 and renewed again between 1920 and 1923. The Armenian people were subjected to deportation, exploitation, abduction, torture, massacre, and starvation,” as said by the armenian-genocide.org.

The aftermath of this sorrowful genocide resulted in Armenia losing half of its land to Turkey and the slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians. Even if you have no family tie to Armenian heritage, the significance of this atrocious criminal act to kill in the masses can resonate with anybody who cares about the wellbeing of others no matter the background they come from. Whether you have a friend, neighbor, or loved one, we can all empathize with the fact that the killing and exploitation of 1.5 million innocent people cannot continue to stay silent and forgotten.

So how can we go about and being a positive change about this genocide that occurred more than 100 years ago? It’s simple. Acknowledgement. The boys and girls attending schools in the Country of Turkey won’t learn about the massacre because the Turkish government has erased the genocide from its history books. They are teaching the next generation nothing about what occurred those many years ago.

Like these children, despite the billions of people who live on this planet, there are still many who aren’t even aware that this genocide happened.

This is why acknowledg-

ment is so powerful. Once we are aware, we can search for the truth and once the truth is revealed it can shine a positive light to take action.

In order to prevent any future genocides, we need to first acknowledge the genocides of the past. Since we are the next generation of change, the more of us that are aware, the better chance we have in advocating the world in a positive way to make ensure that no community will ever have to suffer the way the Armenians did in the past or for any community that has suffered the effects of genocide.

‘Museum’

The proper definition for the word “Museum” reads as follows: A building in which objects of historical, scientific, artistic, or cultural interest are stored and exhibited.

Whatever lies within the grand halls and rooms of said museum ultimately relies on the Museum Director. The Museum Director is essentially a content specialist who regulates what gets selected to be presented in the institution.

No, this is not an article filled with random facts about museums; rather, the facts previously written are meant to define the foundations of the play “Museum,” directed

by William Korf. In “Museum,” we get exactly what a museum fanatic would expect when visiting one. The subtle twist in “Museum” is that the audience is ultimately the “museum fanatic,” while the cast are the works of art.

This fact can help define the play, and perfectly blends the play’s meaning with the definition for the term “museum.” But this time, the original definition for the word “museum” can be reworded to fit the context of the play.

“Museum” is a play with depth, providing over-the-top humor and audience immersion.

The proper definition, or meaning, for the play “Museum” reads as follows: A culturally diverse cast performing an art of interest that is to be examined by the audience, led by a director who manages who and what is to be presented during this play.

Subtleties like this help add depth to a play that, on

the surface, is seemingly only focused on delivering hilariously over-the-top comedy.

“Museum” can be perceived in a variety of ways and still deliver quality material. Are you looking for non-stop, chaotically beautiful comedy that can help take you to another plane of existence for 90-minutes? It can do that. Want to examine cultural commentary while poking fun at human-nature?

Again, “Museum” can do that.

There is no main character in “Museum.” In fact, the ensemble cast works together so naturally, there is no need for one. From the beginning, to the middle, and to the end of the play, different characters straddle into the exhibit called “The Broken Silence,” which is the only stage used for “Museum.”

Ironically, the “Broken Silence” exhibit expresses a repeated theme throughout the play, a play that never takes a moment of silence in between its characters hilarious banter.

Each character tells a story. From the security guard’s struggle to maintain order throughout the exhibit, to all the character’s background reactions and expressions, there is something to be

examined and enjoyed, much like a real museum.

The humor in “Museum” relies heavily on dialogue, and it excels in that regard.

What’s interesting is the use of the actual museum exhibit. Before the play, the audience was allowed to walk on stage and admire the artwork, created by Rio Hondo students, that was on display, mimicking a real-life museum. People filled the stage, took photo’s, admired the art, and then proceeded back to their seats. Because of this, when looking back up at the performing cast, it felt as if we were actually inside the museum as visitors, watching everything unfold in a chaotically beautiful and immersing way.

“Museum” is a play with depth; providing over-thetop humor and audience immersion. It gives us a look at society and all of human nature’s beautiful (and some not so beautiful) flaws, while holding back on any political criticism or commentary.

It’s refreshing, because in a society where criticism and bad news can be found around every corner, in every movie, and in every T.V. show, we need a break every now and then in order to enjoy the subtle beauties of life.

Calligraphy Brought to Life CORBIN BOONE Reporter

Professor De Lin Shang, calligrapher and president of the Chinese Calligraphy and Seal-Engraving Art Research Institute, visited the Rio Hondo College campus Friday, April 28 to share his experience and knowledge on the art of Chinese calligraphy.

In traditional Chinese culture, calligraphy was known as an art form long before the Song Dynasty, where it became mutually practiced with painting.

When entering the workshop, Shang was very gracious and welcoming as he brought in ink and brushes to introduce the art form to students.

One of the first asked to make a sample calligraphy

was Enrique Garcia. When asked where he had learned of the ancient form of writing, Garcia replied, “From a professor at Cerritos College… I got my first calligraphy brush from China Town.”

Shang gave insight into a calligraphy that consisted of beautiful ink strokes that had the meaning of “The heart being patient” and used examples from his own work and student’s pieces.

These writings in particular were written on long pieces of paper; but calligraphy can also be written on cotton or silk, how it was traditionally written.

Shang introduced the proper way to handle a calligraphy brush; in which he uses the raised-wrist method, involving good posture and

holding the brush at its center.

The art form is similar to drawing, since it does involve a single picture that represents a phrase or action. When students were given a chance to write their own, many asked for insight on how to write a particular subject such as a dragon or person.

Various students were able to take pictures of their very own calligraphy. Each were precise in their writings and were able to learn the meanings of the calligraphy pieces.

Shang reminded the students that patience and simplicity is best when creating something such as this by saying, “simple is best, good is considered best.”

After breaking box office, critical, and audience expectations back in 2014 with “Guardians of the Galaxy,” James Gunn’s lovable team of misfits return to the big screen in a manner unfamiliar to most sequels.

Movies aren’t about being better or establishing quality in relationships to other presentations. They’re about ideas and how best to execute them. In that regard, if “Guardians of the Galaxy” is about finding a family, “Volume 2” is about what it means to be part of one.

Being part of a family is big and messy. They butt heads, they’ll yell, they won’t listen to each other. And at the end of the day, they need each other more than anyone else. Lord, do these character argue.

The opening credits, a digitally constructed longtake sequence, reminds you of the gleeful possibilities of summer entertainment. It’s exciting and propulsive but hilarious and informative, showcasing how the Guardians have grown to work as a team in their time together.

You’d be hard pressed to find a more entertaining opening to a Marvel Studios movie to date. It’s a sufficient appetizer to events about to transpire but the meat and potatoes are the character relationships.

Picking up several months after the Guardians saved the galaxy, the menagerie of miscreants are doing odd jobs. They’re intent is still

to go around helping people across the galaxy, but that doesn’t mean they can’t pick up a nice paycheck every now and then. Through a comedy of errors thanks to Rocket (who is still the universe’s most triggerhappy raccoon), the Guardians once again find themselves on the run from a seemingly endless army of people who want them dead.

But what’s new?

The main narrative thread is kicked off after Star-Lord (Chris Pratt, charismatic as ever in the role that sprung him to stardom) and the Guardians are saved by his father Ego (Kurt Russell radiating in the confident swagger he’s known for). It’s a grand cliche to post a late film reveal about familial ties but what makes a series of films like “Guardians” so different is in how it revels in cliche, and expands upon what makes them entertaining to reveal a sincere emotional truth about itself.

Following in the footsteps of great sequels like “Empire Strikes Back,” “Volume 2” decides to narrow its focus on characters while losing constraints of a traditional plot structure. Developments in the story are entirely predicated on characters acting emotionally. It’s easily the most emotionally driven Marvel Studios film, and has more in common with great superhero epics like “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” and “Spider-Man 2” than other films in the studios lineup.

The Guardians split off into separate groups for the majority of the film. We understand how these char-

acters bounce off one another but Gunn’s script sees it best to pair off characters in unexpected ways. The Guardians have to look at one another and, through better and worse, realize for themselves whether or not they even need a family in the first place.

It’s a movie that dives deeper into itself to share emotional honesty with a bumping soundtrack. In a nutshell, the music feels more suitable for what is occurring onscreen instead of the instantly iconic needledrops of the first film. That might be true of the whole film. While not composing new pop culture iconography in the same manner of the first outing, “Volume 2” gets introspective.

Actions have consequences, emotions are bombastic and a talking baby tree is endlessly adorable. Oddly enough, Baby Groot might be the least compelling character in the whole film. This isn’t a sleight against the character or his adorable factor, but rather a testament to James Gunn’s writing and direction for the rest of the cast. Not every character gets as large an arc as Star-Lord but all of them feel emotionally huge.

Gamora and Nebula, sisters and hardened survivors of the space warlord Thanos, once again are at odds with one another but in confronting one another also confront their troubled history and have to decide whether or not to let it define them. Drax finds common ground with newcomer Mantis, an empathetic alien who can under-

stand emotions, though finds herself at odds with common sense. Rocket gets to bounce off Yondu and the two bond over their anger while forging an unlikely partnership.

It’s Yondu who gets the most surprising amount of focus.

As Yondu, Michael Rooker delivers his finest performance to date and juxtaposes his emotional journey against Star-Lord’s exciting new relationship with Ego.

Ego is also a sentient planet, by the way. Ego’s Kurt Russell form is a construct of flesh willed into existence by the sentient planet who has traveled across the stars seeking life and purpose.

There are still hints of that bigger Marvel universe establishment happening in the background. Space battles galore and extended sketch comedy bits that would feel at home in a galactic “Saturday Night Live” are welcoming, but “Volume 2’s” own essential purpose is in exploring who these characters are and what they mean to one another.

That a standalone sequel can manage this sense of identity is impressive. That this is the fifteenth entry in a shared universe is astounding and proof that the Marvel machine won’t run out of gas anytime soon.

Why Have Marvel Comic Sales Dropped?

Marvel’s vice president of sales, David Gabriel has faced criticism after saying that comic book sales were dropping because readers are not embracing the new diversity. In an interview with ICv2, Gabriel said that he was told by the Marvel Retailer Summit that fans were not into the new female heroes.

“I don’t know if that’s a question for me. I think that’s a better question for retailers who are seeing all publishers. What we heard was that people didn’t want any more diversity. They didn’t want female characters out there,” Gabriel said. “That’s what we heard, whether we believe that or not. I don’t know that that’s really true, but that’s what we saw in sales.”

Gabriel continued saying, “We saw the sales of any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up against,” He added. “That was difficult for us because we had a lot of fresh, new, exciting ideas that we were trying to get out and nothing new really worked.”

Since receiving the backlash over his statement, Gabriel later issued a second statement to ICv2 to clear up his remarks. He said that there were some retailer who felt some core Marvel heroes

were being abandoned, but that there were readers for characters like Miles Morales and Ms Marvel who “ARE excited about these new heroes,” he wrote. “And let me be clear, our new heroes are not going anywhere! We are proud and excited to keep introducing unique characters that reflect new voices and new experiences into the Marvel Universe and pair them with our iconic heroes.”

“We have also been hearing from stores that welcome and champion our new characters and titles and want more,” he added. “They’ve invigorated their own customer base and helped them grow their stores because of it. So we’re getting both sides of the story and the only upcoming change we’re making is to ensure we don’t lose focus of our core heroes.”

Comic book sales may just be dropping due to more people reading books, newspapers, magazines and comics digitally as opposed to buying them in stores, and with that most ads have made the move online too. Add that to the fact that many creators online have their own webcomics out there for people to read for less or free, and it’s easy to see that Marvel has some competition.

The idea that diversity within movies, tv shows, and media isn’t necessary or wanted has always been around. When Star Wars the Force Awakens came out there were people complain-

ing about the fact that Rey, the main female lead, was also the main character in the film. Similarly the Ghostbusters 2016 movie received negative comments over the mainly all female lead cast.

These movies had opposite outcomes, with Star Wars making $2,068,223,624 and Ghostbusters only making a little more money above its budget. This may have been due to how each movie marketed their female leads as Star Wars didn’t make it clear whether Finn or Rey was the main character, while Ghostbusters made it clear who their main characters were.

Despite negative responses to diverse casting, there are media pieces that still do well. Moana and Big Hero 6 are two of Disney’s highest grossing animated features, according to Box Office Mojo, since 2007 and both have a diverse cast. The Power Rangers 2017 movie made $40.5 million during the movie’s opening and it only has one main white character with rest of the cast representing different races, along with one character being part of the lgbtq+ community and another being autistic.

Rogue One also had mainly people of color portraying its main characters and it made $1,055,914,122 worldwide.

Marvel comics may just be running into some hard times as the comic industry changes, but they have time to catch up.

If there’s one thing I strive to not become, it’s being a martyr of my parent’s ideals. There is an everlasting gift that one’s parental figure gives, whether or not they are present at all in your life. The gift is an interpersonal ghost that lingers on people and is theirs until they are dead: which then goes on to haunt whomever is in the next generation.

These are the generation curses that bind all of us, and will stop us from being who we really want to be. Generational curses can range from depression, alcohol/drug addiction, narrow minded thinking, and self destructive habits. A Lot of these curses appear to be very dismissable; seeing these corruptible tendencies in these people are often thought as their problem, or something that you yourself are immune to.

There is a difference between a parent and a friend; one cannot be both.

A friend walks alongside you and is on the same emotional level. What a parent must do is push away whatever self destructive habits they may have and try their best toward guiding their child to be better than them. Unfortunately there has been a cultural shift where the adult figures of many communities choose to live and learn with their children, rather than raising their kids up above them to achieve greater heights than they could ever reach.

The “bad example,” e.g.

Do as I say not as I do, is always going to be prominent

in someone’s life. Avoiding something like that can never really last. It seems like something that can be ignored, but it is something that will eventually take hold and affect your life. The only way to deal with it is to face it head on. This is much easier said than done.

These generational curses must be broken, especially to protect future generations.

For you to be truly happy, the corruption must be broken.

It takes time and cannot be done in a single day. It may even take years to breakthrough the shade of corruption that has been passed on, but in order to be at peace, it must be done.

When taking on these ghosts you must remember to take a moment and think: “Is really what I want... Is it?”

If you had a child, a little boy or girl, is this how you would want them to see you and is this how you would want someone to remember you? When I die, I don’t want to be remembered as a sad alcoholic who always talked about being great, but never really was. Attempt things that your mom or dad never would have, so that at least when you die you would have been better than them because you led a life with no remorse. Because with depression, addiction, and insanity comes a life of regret and we all deserve better than that.

Just remember: you are better than your parents. The goal of a parent is to have their child be better than them, so if they aren’t willing to put in the effort, we have to.

This past Wednesday I spent the day commemorating the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with marchers from all over southern California.

Being of Hispanic decent; I personally asked myself: “Rudy Pinedo, you’re a Mexican. What’s a guy like me going to a rally that has no ties or any significance to my culture?”

Well, that’s the beauty of a march with such an impactful cause; it has the ability to bring people from all backgrounds and walks of life to stand along with one another in singularity to raise awareness to issues that truly impact our world.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the ‘Forgotten Genocide’, “The Armenian Genocide was administered by the Turkish government against the entire Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire. It was carried out during W.W.I between 1915 and 1918 and renewed again between 1920 and 1923.

The Armenian people were subjected to deportation, exploitation, abduction, torture, massacre, and starvation,” as said by the armenian-genocide.org.

The aftermath of this sorrowful genocide resulted in Armenia losing half of its land to Turkey and the slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians. Even if you have no family tie to Armenian heritage, the significance of this atrocious criminal act to kill in the masses can resonate with anybody who cares

about the wellbeing of others no matter the background they come from. Whether you have a friend, neighbor, or loved one, we can all empathize with the fact that the killing and exploitation of 1.5 million innocent people cannot continue to stay silent and forgotten.

So how can we go about and being a positive change about this genocide that occurred more than 100 years ago? It’s simple. Acknowledgement. The boys and girls attending schools in the Country of Turkey won’t learn about the massacre because the Turkish government has erased the genocide from its history books. They are teaching the next generation nothing about what occurred those many years ago. Like these children, despite the billions of people who live on this planet, there are still many who aren’t even aware that this genocide happened.

This is why acknowledgment is so powerful. Once we are aware, we can search for the truth and once the truth is revealed it can shine a positive light to take action. In order to prevent any future genocides, we need to first acknowledge the genocides of the past. Since we are the next generation of change, the more of us that are aware, the better chance we have in advocating the world in a positive way to make ensure that no community will ever have to suffer the way the Armenians did in the past or for any community that has suffered the effects of genocide.

Roadrunners Baseball Team Loses Opening Game of the Series Against Chaffey College Rio Hondo blows the lead against the Panthers, lose second game CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor

Rio Hondo College’s baseball team hosted Chaffey College April 25 for the first game of a three-game series as the Roadrunners closed out their conference play.

After snapping El Camino’s 25 game winning streak with back to back wins April 18 and April 20, Rio Hondo looked to keep up the momentum against the Panthers.

Chaffey had plans of their own, though, and opened the scoring in the top of the second-inning as Aaron McCann homered getting two RBI as Jake Nichols scored, giving the Panthers an early 2-0 lead at The Jungle.

The score would remain the same until the top of the sixth-inning as Marco Hernandez advanced to third on an error by Rio’s shortstop, allowing McCann to get his second run on the evening.

Shortly after, Chaffey kept the pace going and Christian Lyman doubled getting an RBI as M. Hernandez scored as Rio Hondo struggled to make an impact on the game.

With the score now at 4-0, the Panthers closed out the game in the top of the seventh-inning as Jordan Hernandez singled getting an RBI as Oscar Martinez makes it a 5-0 win in the first game of the series for Chaffey College.

Rio Hondo College will next travel to Rancho

Cucamonga where they will face Chaffey College in the second game of the series on which the Roadrunners need to pick up a win if they want to keep their conference hopes alive.

The Roadrunners returned to action April 27 as they travelled to Rancho Cucamonga in search of a win after a tough loss two days prior. The Roadrunners started the game off strong with Randy Buenrostro getting a single, RBI as R.J. Romo opened the scoring.

Cesar Sandoval kept the momentum going with a double and two RBI as Alex Rodriguez advanced to third base while Gabe Chavez and Buenrostro scored making it a 3-0 game in the top of the

first-inning.

Chaffey College would quickly respond in the bottom of the first-inning as Nichols singled getting an RBI as Jordan Hernandez scored followed by a double from McCann as he picked up an RBI sending Nichols home making it a 3-2 game.

Rio Hondo would pick up another run in the top of the third-inning as Sandoval reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on the throw getting an RBI while Chavez scored. Chaffey once again responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third-inning. McCann reached on a fielder’s choice, RBI, allowing Nichols to advance to second with Logan Gopperton advancing

to third base as Jonathan Longtin scored unearned making it a 4-3 game.

The top of the fourth-inning saw Romo walked to first as Danny Marquez advanced to second base pushing Nick Ybarra to third base as Marcos Rivas scored.

Next up, Alex Rodriguez singled getting two RBI with Chavez advancing to third base as Romo and Ybarra both scored putting Rio up 7-3. Chavez would add an additional run to the tally thanks to Sandoval who singled getting an RBI.

Chaffey College would return the favor with a rally of their own, where the Panthers would pick up a whopping 11 runs to completely turn the game around. Long-

tin started off the inning with a triple getting three RBI as J. Hernandez, Martinez and Keller scored cutting the Panthers deficit to two.

Gobberton next reached on a fielder’s choice getting an RBI as Longtin scored followed by Joel Osuna who doubled getting an RBI scoring Gobberton. The Panthers kept their momentum going as Martinez singled getting two RBI and Keller advanced to third base while Christian Lyman and Osuna scored giving Chaffey their first lead of the game, 8-9.

With the game in their favor and the momentum going their way, the Panthers continued to take advantage of their hitting streak. J. Hernandez singled getting an RBI as Martinez advanced to second base while Keller scored another run. Hot on the bat, Longtin picked up another double, two RBI as J. Hernandez and Martinez scored before Gobberton’s single scored Longtin himself making it a 8-14 game at the end of the inning.

The Roadrunners would begin to chip away at the lead in the top of the seventh-inning as Marquez singled and advanced to second base getting two RBI as Ybarra and Rivas scored before Marquez himself later scored on a walk. Rio Hondo College lost 11-14 against Chaffey College and will next host the Panthers April 28 in their final home game of their conference season.

ESPN President Releases Memo; Laying Off Hundreds RAMON ALVARADO Reporter

ESPN President, John Skipper, released a memo to the company’s employees informing them of some changes coming to the network. “The Worldwide Leader in Sports” announced that it will be laying off many of its on-air personalities.

In the memo, Skipper says that “ESPN has been actively engaged throughout its history in navigating changes in technology and fan behavior in order to continue to deliver quality, breakthrough content.”

In October 2015, ESPN laid off around 300 workers. Most of those workers

were off camera. With some of its on-air personalities being let go now, one has to ask if ESPN is struggling to keep up with the digital age.

According to The New York Times, ESPN has lost more than 10 million subscribers over the past several years.

NY Times contributor, James Miller, said the “significant losses in their subscriber base were like punches to the gut and head, and now the company is trying to make sure they are strong enough to fight in the future.”

Rather than watching ESPN’s popular show “SportsCenter,” fans, especially younger-aged fans, turn to their phones and laptops to watch any high-

light video they want in an instant. This is forcing ESPN to focus more on its digital content. Focusing on digital content is allowing the

company to make changes to their staff.

Various sources claim ESPN has let go of about 100 of its workers as part of

the “changes” Wednesday’s memo mentions.

“Our objective in all we do is to best serve fans and their changing consumption habits while still maintaining an unparalleled and diverse talent roster that resonates with fans across all our platforms,” said ESPN President, Skipper. “We will continue to foster creativity and investment in the products and resources necessary to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.”

With all the changes coming to the network and the rise of Fox’s “FS1” sports coverage, “The Worldwide Leader in Sports,” ESPN, may not be the leader for much longer.

Another high scoring game between Rio Hondo College and Chaffey College saw the Roadrunners beat the Panthers in their final home game of the season April 28. Rio Hondo closed out their season with an overall record of 19-17 and an 11-11 record in conference play.

The Roadrunners opened the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as Randy Buenrostro singled and advanced to second on an error by the infield, getting an RBI as R.J. Romo advanced to third base scoring on the error, followed by a run from Gabe Chavez in the same play. Cesar Sandoval was walked getting him an RBI as Steve Genera advanced to second base and Alex Rodri-

guez to third, while Buenrostro finished it off with a run making it 3-0 for Rio.

Chaffey would respond in the top of the second-inning with Christian Valdez getting a double and an RBI as he set up Marcos Hernandez to score. The Panthers would get their second with Valdez scoring on a wild pitch to make it a 3-2 in Rio’s favor.

The bottom of the second would see Chavez score off of a Romo double and RBI that advanced Danny Marquez to third base. Next, Rodriguez singled getting an RBI as Romo advanced to third allowing Marquez to make it home safely advancing Rio’s lead to 5-2.

The Panthers would pick up a single run in the top of the third-inning thanks to Logan Gopperton who scored off of M. Hernandez’s single and RBI that advanced Justin

Wells to third. Chaffey would go on to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth-inning with Oscar Martinez’s double and RBI scoring Ellis Stevens. Noah Williams then doubled getting an RBI as Martinez scored. A fifth-inning rally would see Chaffey come out on top, getting an additional five runs while Rio Hondo managed to score three of their own making it a 7-10 game for the Panthers.

Joseph Chavez started off the top of the fifth with a single advancing to second base on the throw while getting two RBI as M. Hernandez scored followed by a run from Patrick Keller. Next up for the Panthers, Williams doubled getting two RBI as Martinez and Chavez scored.

Logan Gopperton then singled getting an RBI bringing Williams home safely.

The bottom of the fifth

saw Rio Hondo’s Rodriguez walked getting an RBI as Romo advanced to second base while Marquez advanced to third and Brady Carlson scored. Genera then reached first on an error by third basemen while Rodriguez advanced to third allowing Marquez to score unearned.

Keller would pick up another unearned run for the Panthers in the top of the sixth-inning after Valdez singled getting an RBI advancing M. Hernandez to second base. Chaffey kept their momentum going well into the top of the seventh and Keller stole second while Williams scored making it now a 8-12 game. The Roadrunners would respond in the bottom of the seventh with Buenrostro and Rodriguez scoring unearned thanks to a single from San-

doval and a walk by Chavez.

The top of the eighth-inning saw Martinez single, getting an RBI sending Stevens home safely as Chaffey maintained their lead against Rio Hondo for the time being. With the score now at 10-13 Rio would have to respond and they did in the final inning of the game sending them into extra innings. The bottom of the ninth saw Chavez single getting an RBI as Rivas advanced to second base while Ybarra scored. Next up, a Romo single and two RBI saw Marquez advance to second meanwhile Chavez and Rivas scored tying the game at 1313.

Rio Hondo would close out the game two innings later when Chavez’s double and RBI sent home Ybarra who scored the winner against Chaffey College on the evening, 14-13.
