THE KINESIOLOGY AND ATHLETICS FAIR AT RIO HONDO COLLEGE WAS A SMASHING SUCCESS SHOWCASING MULTIPLE RESOURCES

The Kinesiology & Athletics Program Fair at Rio Hondo College buzzed with energy on Wednesday, offering a vibrant showcase of campus resources, student services, and academic programs. Held at the KA Complex, the fair brought together departments and programs aimed at supporting student success, with music like “Oye Mi Amor” adding a lively rhythm to the event.

The fair was spearheaded by Teresa, the Division Secretary for Kinesiology & Athletics, who emphasized the importance of showcasing the department.

“We’d like people to know we have an athletics department because it’s hidden,” she said, gesturing toward the booth decorated with banners and promotional materials.

Counselor Michael W. Miles, seated at a table surrounded by championship plaques and athletic memorabilia, played a crucial role in guiding student-athletes. Miles spent the morning assisting students in fixing their class schedules and navigating academic

requirements, ensuring they remained eligible for their respective sports teams.

Among the standout booths was the Disabled Students Program Services (DSPS), where Rose and Ann explained the range of support offered, such as alternative testing, assistive technology, and eText resources. They highlighted the AIM system, which streamlines the application process and helps manage the high volume of student applications they receive throughout the semester.

Students interested in transportation solutions flocked to the Go Rio program’s booth, where Ruth from Admissions explained the free bus passes available for the semester. The process is simple: students complete a U-Pass survey through Access Rio, take their ID to the photo window, and receive a pass that can be reactivated each semester.

Nearby, Liz from Financial Aid was busy answering questions about grants, scholarships, and the application process. She

encouraged students to stay on top of their applications to ensure they receive aid on time, noting that the final deadline for the 2024-2025 academic year is June 30, 2025.

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) featured representatives from the Math, Science, and Engineering Center (MSCC) and the Learning Assistance Center (LAC), who highlighted their free tutoring for STEM courses and open lab

resources, including unlimited printing.

Alexander Castellanos, a health major, attended the event simply to check things out. “I was just curious about what was going on and wanted to see what they were offering,” he shared. Events like this, he added, make it easier for students to discover new programs and resources they might not have known about.

The atmosphere was

ROADRUNNERS SHOW PROMISE BUT FALL TO PASADENA CITY COLLEGE

The Rio Hondo Roadrunners showed flashes of potential but ultimately fell short in their final home match of the season, losing to Pasadena City College in four sets (25-22, 18-25, 10-25, 6-25). Despite the tough loss, the Roadrunners demonstrated resilience and heart in the opening set, taking an early lead and showcasing teamwork and communication.

The first set saw the Roadrunners firing on all cylinders. Communication on the court was at its peak, and the players trusted one another to execute plays. Katie, a team leader, credited the strong opening set to the squad’s ability to stay connected. “We were talking a lot, communicating better, and trusting one another,” she said. However, the momentum couldn’t carry into the rest of the match. Pasadena City College made crucial

adjustments after the opening set, exploiting the Roadrunners’ smaller blocking front and inconsistent serve-receive.

“Our block is pretty small for their hitters,” said Angel, another standout player. “I also think our serve-receive isn’t as consistent as it needs to be.”

Pasadena’s aggressive hitting and disciplined serving put the

Roadrunners on the defensive for the remainder of the match.

Head Coach Wings highlighted how the team struggled to maintain its composure after a strong start.

“I think maybe the team had all their adrenaline pushed into that first set. After that, they kind of took their foot off the gas pedal,” he explained. “Once

Pasadena started coming at us harder, it became more difficult to counter their serves and stay disciplined on defense.” The Roadrunners also dealt with chemistry issues throughout the season, which was evident in scramble plays where offensive opportunities were missed. “It’s just little mental things,” Coach Wings said.

“We haven’t had a full team all season, and the chemistry isn’t all there. That’s part of it for sure.”

Despite the challenges, the Roadrunners are looking forward to their next match against East Los Angeles College (ELAC) on Friday. With ELAC being a non-ranked opponent, the team sees this as a chance to bounce back and end the season on a high note.

“I feel like we’re really hand-inhand with them,” Katie said, expressing confidence for the upcoming game. “I want to see us play with the same energy we had in the first set today.”

Coach Wings shared the same optimism, noting that the ELAC matchup is an opportunity for he team to showcase its best self. “It’s another chance for the Rio Hondo Roadrunners to

welcoming and celebratory, with booths offering snacks, informational brochures, and branded swag to attendees.

Representatives from various programs, including the Puente Program, engaged students in conversations about opportunities ranging from transfer support to scholarships and grants.

With over a dozen programs represented, the fair underscored the college’s commitment to empowering students through accessible resources and community building. Teresa reflected on the event’s success, saying, “It’s about making sure students know what’s available to them.”

The Kinesiology & Athletics Program Fair highlighted not only the diversity of resources available at Rio Hondo College but also the dedication of faculty and staff to student success. From transportation solutions to academic counseling, the event was a reminder of the strong support network available to every student on campus.

finish strong and prove what they’re capable of,” he said.

The Roadrunners may have faced adversity throughout the season, but their determination to improve and fight until the end remains unwavering. Friday’s game against ELAC will be a true test of their resilience and growth.

THE “WICKED” PREMIER IN LOS ANGELES WAS MAGICAL

On November ninth, I got so fortunate to be a part of a fan zone for the wicked premiere of la. The movie “Wicked” is based on a musical that debuted in 2003. Wicked is a retelling of the story of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. It’s based on the 1995 novel Wicked.

This upcoming week the movie with Cynthia Ervio, and Ariana Grande are playing Elphaba and glinda.

The reason why this is very important to me and how this movie is already having it’s rotten tomato score at 99%!! which is so high of a score this year, it means the world coming from a “fan girl world” seeing

how not just cynthia but ariana really live out there dreams of becoming the stars that they’ve always wanted to be and how it’s just really inspiring to see how a lot of time in general we see how actors or people in movies that don’t really like to show a vulnerable side when they are also talking about how much these rules impact them but throughout this premiere and showings of the movies.

These stars have done an outstanding job of show and how proud they are of doing the movie like this and how it’s kind of been a reflection of their own life as they said as well and I also loved from the beginning ever since she was on Nickelodeon and now seeing her on a really big screen just

made me feel so excited to see this movie, I got to interview some fans in line while we were waiting to see the stars, i was fortunate enough to get two signatures as well from other co stars like michelle yeoh, Johnathan Bailey, marissa bode and Ethan slater.

All outstanding and talented actors. I was fortunate enough to see the actors and meet them as well. From a

fan who I met online named Cristian he said he’s also mentioned how Ariana has just been a very impactful person in his life as well. And has mentioned “i’m excited to see the movie and the anticipation for this and the outcome should be great” seeing how fans and a community can reunite and come together and support people means the world to many fans like me.
