A Golden West College Professor, Tarin Olson was put on leave for the next two weeks, including from her online classes, after a video of her telling a Long Beach couple to “go back to your country” went viral. The Coast Community College District said that they are reviewing how to proceed with the matter. The video went viral last week and was posted by Tony Kao on Facebook. He wrote that he was taking a walk with his wife and daughter and “encountered a bigot and a racist...in our neighborhood in Long Beach.” The video starts off mid-conversation with the woman walking away after realizing that she is being recorded. In the video, Kao says, “I want you to tell everybody why you told us to go back to our country.” Olsen replies with “you need to go back to your home country,” and “I never voted for you.” Kao tells the woman that both he and his wife were born in the United States. “We’re very aware the community has deep concerns, and we’re not going to let this die,” said District spokeswoman Leticia Clark. “We’re looking at past interactions with students and staff to see if it relates to the comments made on the video.” Golden West College may release further information on their website, according to Clark. Monday, Olson emailed the Daily Pilot saying that she “was not in a good place emotionally after receiving so many disgusting emails for something that wasn’t even racist and was then skewed by a guy named Tony who filmed me without my permission.” Olson said in a part of the video that was not posted online, Kao asked her why she “hated him so much,” and she said that she does not hate him. Advocacy Week, which began on March 6 and ended on the 8, is a time for those with a cause to stand up and speak on it. Among those groups at Rio Hondo were the DREAMers, WOMXN’S, and the LGBTQ organizations that were given the platform of a three day course to talk about the rights that belong to their groups. Along with all this, Rio had the privilege of hosting Senior Preview Day. This event lasted two days, and gave chances to different neighboring high schools to send out their eager and prospective seniors to explore and get to know the campus. Much was going on, and one could see the excitement in the next generation of RHC students. The mid-quad cluttered with high school seniors being led around by fellow RHC staff and chaperones. Signs were held high to be seen, as large groups of various students roamed the campus and were given a chance to check out the different exhibits held like the WOMXN’s VIP organization. Some brave seniors even joined in on the movement for the “Men’s March” which had students walking down a path in red high heels. Booths were also set up with different clubs, such as JCPR and PUENTE offering information about the benefits of joining. Students were very willing and had much to say about how they felt about Rio Hondo and their personal goals as far as majors and Continued on page 2
