CALL SUMMER SESSIONS

It was such a great experience that we look forward to repeating it in the near future. There are so many resources available for teachers and students online that it would be a real pity if we did not take advantage of them all. Besides, most of these students spend hours surfing the net so CALL is an excellent aproach to learning.

EARTH DAY CONTEST AND AMBASSADOR Ms. VILMA MARTINEZ VISIT

For Earth Day, the US Embassy sponsored a competition whose winners would be awarded an important amount of money to make the project come true. In this competition, Access Programs from all around the country participated. Each group had to design a campaign showing practical ways of helping raise awareness on how important it is to save the Planet. After many debates, our group decided that the best way was to go to schools to talk to students about some of the most important problems. When the competition closed, the teacher told us that we were the winners! At first, we were so shocked about the wonderful news that we couldn’t believe it. Then, we got the chance to meet the American Ambassador Ms. Vilma Martinez at Aricana. When that happened we realized how important our contribution was going to be. We are very thankful for the opportunity of meeting her. She is a nice person. Now, we are happy about starting our Earth Day campaign. We can’t wait! May 8, 2010

On Saturday May 8th, from 9 o’clock in the morning to midday, we had a recreational day at the Municipal Stadium “Jorge Newbery”. All Access students played basketball, softball, volleyball and soccer. It was really interesting and fun. It was a great chance to meet the 31 new Access students too! After playing the sports, we had lunch together. We ate delicious hamburgers with french fries and soda from Burger King. After practising so many sports we were really exhausted. “Si los pueblos no se ilustran, si no se vulgarizan sus derechos, si cada hombre no conoce lo que vale, lo que puede y lo que se le debe, nuevas ilusiones sucederán a las antiguas, y después de vacilar algún tiempo entre mil incertidumbres, será tal vez nuestra suerte mudar de tiranos sin destruir la tiranía.” Mariano Moreno "Unhappy it is, though, to reflect that a brother's sword has been sheathed in a brother's breast and that the once‐happy plains of America are either to be drenched with blood or inhabited by slaves. Sad alternative! But can a virtuous man hesitate in his choice?" George Washington

WE CELEBRATED INDEPENDENCE DAY! On August 5th, Access students celebrated Independence Day for both Argentina and the United States. Students prepared a short but meaningful play which represented how each country gained its independence in 1776 in Philadelphia in the U.S.A and 1816 in Tucuman in Argentina. Students were very careful in paying attention to details regarding the scenery and costumes to fully represent how things were at those times. Some of our students are really good at working with technology so they were in charge of the special effects‐it really helped to set the mood of the different historical time periods. Also, students represented the celebrations held in modern times both in Argentina and the U.S.A. – parades, marching bands, street vendors, even fireworks! Yanina Zagarrio

Day

Weeks prior to the day of the play, students worked in groups, making sure that everything was well organised for the big performance. They made stage props, designed some of the costumes, made invitations and posters inviting families and friends to join us. It was a lot of work but worth every minute devoted to it. From the look on everyone´s face you could tell how proud they were to have accomplished this. ARICANA´s Board of Directors and staff joined us, as well as the authorities of the schools students study at. We took many pictures and recorded some videos to remember that special day. The Performers‐A great way to learn English and have a good time!! On Wednesday August 18th Access students went to Mateo Booz Theater to see an educational play called Pirates´ Island. Students were a bit worried about how well they might be able to cope with the language as they have only been studying English for a few months. However, we worked with activities about the songs and dialogs from the play beforehand so as to prepare students for the challenge. During the play, we were certain students were having a really good time because they were laughing at the funny moments and dancing to the rhythm of some of the catchy songs. After the play, we discussed the theme of the play, its plot, characters, and setting and worked quite well! Students were surprised by how well they had been able to understand, after all. Learning is meant to be both fun and meaningful so plays such as this one are what our English programs need to make things a lot more entertaining. Children´s Day

August 28, 2010

A Very Special Children´s Day! On August 28th, Access students visited children at an orphanage in Rosario to spend a beautiful, sunny afternoon playing games, and sharing delicious snacks. Prior to this important visit, we worked very responsibly to collect as toys as possible at ARICANA and in our many schools. Luckily, everyone in our community pitched in so we collected many dolls, teddy bears, barbies, and many more. Before our visit, we got together at ARICANA BELLA VISTA to make sure that all the toys were clean, in good condition and then we wrapped them. We also prepared some games and activities to play in English.

When Saturday arrived, Access students were a little nervous and anxious. Eventually all that went away and they had a really good time. Boys and girls were extremely happy to receive so many lovely gifts and we felt good because we were able to make their day a little happier with our visit. We received so many donations that we have already planned a second visit prior to Christmas in December! We want to congratulate all Access students for being so kind, giving and warm.
