ACCESS JOURNAL ROSARIO 2012 Call Summer Sessions

January - February, 2012

During January and February students attended classes at Aricana Headquarters in order to have intensive computer-assisted sessions at the Multimedia Lab and special classes with video and Power Point Presentations using the interactive whiteboard.

The

four Access courses were divided into two groups and took turns working either in the lab or in the video room. They really enjoyed the classes as they were learning in a dynamic and interactive way and showed amazing computer skills.

The topics of the video lessons were really interesting and students showed great enthusiasm when watching movies such as Shrek, Valentine’s Day or the pilot episode from the popular tv series Lost. Students also learned about holidays from the USA and from their own country, for example, Martin Luther King’s Day and Veteran’s Day.

ACCESS JOURNAL ROSARIO 2012 English for Journalists

June 5, 2012

On June 5 Access students from second year took part in the workshop “English for journalists” conducted by Paulina Schmidt, a freelance journalist for La Capital newspaper. On this occasion, students learned about the process of how the news story comes to being and the importance of the different means of communication in our every day lives. Paulina shared her experience as a journalist with the students, telling them about all her jobs and places where she has worked over the years. Students enjoyed this workshop very much and they were ‘journalists’ themselves when they had to interview their partners to learn more about what each of them had learned from the workshop. During the presentation, members of the USA Embassy visited the class and interacted with students and Paulina.

What was the presentation about? “It was about journalism. Paulina talked about her life as a journalist, about her job in the newspaper and on TV. She also talked about the means of communication (internet, TV, newspaper, radio).” David Lombardo – interviewed by Pablo Bordón

ACCESS JOURNAL ROSARIO 2012 Devon’s visit

June 25 and 26, 2012

On June 25th and 26th, Access students received a very special visit. Devon Arndt is a twenty-year-old American girl who came to Rosario some weeks ago as part of an internship between ARICANA and St. Catherine University. Devon is from Minnesota and during her stay she is visiting different classes in order to talk to students, exchange experiences and tell them about her country.

On this special occasion, Devon gave Access students a Power Point Presentation on some cities from the United States which she finds really beautiful and interesting such as Boston, New York, Savannah, Chicago, Santa Fe, Seattle and her hometown, Saint Paul. After the presentation they had a nice talk with Devon during which they could learn a bit more about her and practise their English.

One more time, Access students enjoyed a most valuable experience and were very happy with it. We want to thank Devon for being so nice and friendly and sharing her knowledge and experience with the students. Devon has three sisters, father and mother. She likes hamburger, pizza and cake. She is studying Spanish. She also likes business. Irina Kalinovski (1A) Devon is a very interesting person. She comes from a beautiful city. She is a bit shy. I like how she speaks English. students in the second year of the Access program had their last cultural activity

before the winter break. They met at ARICANA Bella Vista to celebrate Argentinean and American Independence Day. One of the activities was held at the Library, where students were asked to look for information in books about important people and places related to the Independence processes of both countries. Then, they wrote the information they found on maps. In the mean time, another group was working in a different classroom with a Power Point Presentation about the independence of the United States and how Americans usually celebrate it today. Devon Arndt, an American girl, was also present during the activities and told students a bit more about this celebration, its importance and what she likes to do on that day.

We all spent a wonderful time together so we want to thank Devon for joining us, Marina, our librarian, for her collaboration and the students for being present and willing to participate.

We had a special class about the independence in Argentina and the United States. I knew something about it but I learned much more with this special class. My favorite activity was when we worked with a map of Argentina. We learned where important people were born. Emanuel Rojas, Access 2B. The day we celebrated the independence of both countries had a special visit from a girl called Devon. She’s from the United States. She told us many of their traditions. We also worked with maps on which we had to place Argentina’s historical battles. We finished the activity eating ‘pastelitos’ with chocolate milk. Yasmín Pollo, Access 2B.

At the party  I danced and talked with  my  friends.  I  wore  a  costume  of  a  dead  person,  but  it  wasn’t  very  real.  I  liked  some  of  the  costumes  a  lot,  for  example,  Jack Sparrow’s costume that won a prize. I  also  liked  the  “dead”  people.  I  didn’t  win  any  award  but  I  really  enjoyed  the  party  and the music. I had lots of fun.   Pablo Balbo – Access 2C

The  party  was  great.  I  wore  a  witch  costume.  I  won  500  candies.  I  was  very  happy. I gave them to the children from my  neighborhood.  I  liked  Cindy’s  costume‐it  was the best. I didn’t win a prize at the party  but I didn’t care because I liked it so much.  The music was nice, the place was good and  all the costumes were excellent.   Alejandra Galarza – Access 2D
