May 29th to 31st, 2013

From May 29th to 31st, in Tanti, Córdoba, the US Embassy organized a camp called Cordoba Immersions. Students from the Access program from the 14 Binational Centers in our country attended this camp and ARICANA was represented by the students Tamara Merello, Sebastian Merino and Brian Salazar (Access 2A), Nicolas Cianni and Franco Coraglio (Access 2C) and Yazmín Pollo, a former Access student.

Apart from the integration and work team activities, the camp’s main project was to carry out a silent movie simulating Back to the Future. The students were able to act, dress and makeup as real actors. The experience also allowed them to practice their English not only with other students of the program but also with members of the embassy who participated in the camp.

Democracy Lesson

O

June 3rd to 4th, 2013

n June 3rd and 4th, Access students from second year had a special class about democracy. This was part of the contest organized by the US State Department and the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, which had the objective of having students learn and discuss about democracy and other values that this implies. First, students watched a video explaining the meaning of democracy and worked with some listening comprehension activities. After this, they completed a mind map with the main concepts related to democracy and then, discussed some situations in which democracy was present or not. Finally, they were assigned a piece of writing for homework, which then participated in the contest. Students were able to reflect upon very important values such as justice, freedom and opportunity. Good luck to all the students who participated in the writing contest!

June and July, 2013

Access students received the visit of Paige LaPoint, an intern student form Wisconsin, who stayed in Rosario and worked at A.R.I.C.A.N.A for about a month. Paige showed students a Power Point presentation about her life and told them about the lifestyle in the US. Before this, students were given some words and phrases related to Paige’s life in order to predict what they meant and then check their predictions by listening to her. After the presentation, they started a discussion comparing and contrasting the lifestyles in Argentina and the United States. The students had a great time listening and practicing their English with a native American girl. Thanks for sharing Paige!

She is Paige, let’s find out what Access students have to say about her...

It’s such a beautiful place, isn’t it? I remember something about her favorite food, she loves peanut butter. And she also loves the chocolate cake. The life in the United States is similar to the life in Argentina, but in other aspects it is different. For example, the American parades are big and a lot of people attend. One similarity is the people because in both countries they are helpful and happy. The most interesting thing about Paige is her pets. They are really funny! Nicolás Cianni – Acces 2C.

During the first week of Winter break, Access students in the first year had the Winter School and attended special classes on three different topics: American and Argentinean Independence Day, Friendship Day and Culture (TV shows, sports, music and education). They worked with the computers in the Lab, with videos, Power Point Presentations and the E-Beam tool. The purpose of the Winter School is that students don’t lose the contact with the language for so long and they can practice it using different engaging tools. One of the most interesting activities consisted of sending letters to e-pals from other cities and countries such as Palestine, Sri Lanka, Lebannon, Uruguay and Mendoza. Let’s see what they tell us about their experience at the Winter school. During the Winter School we learned about Independence Day and Friendship Day. Mary McBride was born in Louisiana but raised in the Washington, D.C., she took to music at an early age. Mary McBride and her band have realised four albums: “Everything Seemed Alright”, “By Any Other Name”, “Every Day Is a Holiday” and “The Way Home”.

I’m excited for the visit. I have never heard of them before. They play country music and sound really well. We now know they’re form the U.S. They’re 5 members and they play country music. They’ve been travelling for 21 different countries and this was their first visit to Argentina. We don’t usually listen to this type of music but we really liked it because it’s cheerful and catchy! We did an interview at Aricana and asked questions. We asked them if they like Argentina, for example. It was a beautiful experience because we could meet great people and learn a lot! By Maxi Danna, Paula Morandi and Agostina Bernaola.

Country music is a genre of American popular music that originated in the rural regions of the Southern United States in the 1920s. It takes its roots from the southeastern genre of American folk music and Western music. Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, fiddles, and harmonicas.

Youth Citizen Program.

October.

Students participated in the Youth Citizenship Program, organized by the NGO OAJNU (Argentinian Youth Organization for the United Nations). The program consists of 4 special classes delivered by members of the NGO in which students learned about citizenship, values and human rights. Then, they have to plan and organize a project to deal with a problem they find in their city or community. The three courses decided to work on the topics of bullying, environmental pollution and garbage classification.

Access 1A: Garbage classification. Access 1A carried out a project to encourage people to classify garbage in order to make the recycling process easier. They decorated trash bins with paint and ribbons and made posters with information about the importance of classifying and recycling garbage. Then, they divided into 3 groups and put the trash bins in their schools and in the Binational Center. They also visited some the classrooms to tell the students about the project and to encourage them to use the bins.

Access 1C: Litter on the city. This project was about encouraging people to take care of the environment, especially of their own city. They first met at ARICANA’s branch to prepare posters with phrases related to the topic. Then, they went to downtown and started talking to people with posters hanging around their necks. They also picked up litter and offered “free hugs” as a way of accepting a compromise with the environment. The project was about the environment. We went to Montenegro square. We talked to people and picked up the garbage together. It was important because people talked about environmental problems. I liked to teach people about the environment.

We went to “Montenegro” square. We did many things, not only we spoke with people but we also had that project we had done. It was important because people don’t understand that there are rules to throw the garbage out. I liked when we shared the afternoon snack.

We went to “Montenegro” square to talk about the environment and care of the city. We did many things such as collecting garbage and talking to people. The project was about materializing the message and our opinion to people. It was important because we raised awareness about caring for our planet. I liked it more when my partner Lautaro talked to people and he was the only one who was encouraged to speak our thoughts on the care and protection of the environment. Daiana Rojas – Access 1C.

We went to “Montenegro” square. What we did was talk to people who were there and try to raise awareness to join the project: ecological environment care. It was an ecological project of environment care to raise awareness not to throw waste in the street, on public roads, that there are containers for that and if we can help each other we can keep out city cleaner.

We went to “Montenegro” square and talked to many people about our project. We cleaned the square.

For me it was important because people saw everything we did about wanting a cleaner city, commitment to respect, love and care.

AFS Visit.

19th and 20th November, 2013.

On November 19 and 20, Access students had a special visit. They received members of AFS, an organization whose aim is to facilitate international educational experiences for adolescents. Members of this organization and students who have traveled to foreign countries through it visited Access students and shared their experiences with them. The students had the possibility to practice English with students from different countries such as New Zealand, Italy, Germany and the USA. They learned about the possibilities they have to travel and also that they can host students from other countries in their own houses. They were very excited about the visit and the possibility to travel around the world.

The visit of members of AFS was very interesting because they told us about their experiences. I would love to travel to another country but not to receive someone because I wouldn’t know if they feel comfortable in my house. If I could, I would go to the USA but I’d also go to Europe because they are my two favorite places to live this fabulous experience. I think I can learn about new customs, new people and new languages. This experience must be truly unique. Luciano Godoy – Access 1A.

I’d like to travel or host a foreign student. But I can’t host a foreign student because I don’t have a comfortable house. You can gain new friends and a new family from this experience.
