Black Tie No “optional” here: you need a tuxedo. If you don’t have one, rent one – just be sure you get the fit right. The no-fail solution: a black peak- or shawl-lapel blazer (like those dudes on the Oscars red carpet). You need to wear a bow tie and a tux shirt (a white wing- or spread-collared shirt and French cuffs), which you wear with cufflinks – check out Woolworths, Carducci and Fabiani for dress shirts with cufflinks. Your pocket square should be white or black. And skip the cummerbund – that’s dad territory (and not in a cool way). As for shoes, a plain black dress shoe is your best bet, but a cap toe will also work. Wear them with black socks.
