Dear Traveler, As Poe Travel romps into its 53rd year, I have stopped to reflect about the dramatic changes in our lives as your travel agents. Call this straight talk the musing of a fossilized curmudgeon. Some areas of changes: COMMUNICATIONS: When we opened,
we contacted everyone abroad via cable with each word charged by Western Union. We thought we had gone to heaven when the telex emerged, then the fax. The Internet has largely triumphed now. We can book a complicated six-nation itinerary to Europe almost immediately and at low cost. --It helps that we know what we are doing.
AIR TRAVEL: In some ways it has improved to those places that were formerly extremely difficult to reach; consider Paro, Bhutan or Ushuaia, Argentina or Tlemcen, Algeria—all now a snap. On the other side of the picture, the level of service—particularly on domestic airlines—has sunk to lows that are almost embarrassing. I recently flew first class on a nonstop flight from Little Rock to Washington and returned during meal times, and the best that could be managed was a miniscule packet of pretzels. Remember when flights were multi-stop? I have an old TTA timetable which shows a DC3 flight from Little Rock to Memphis which stopped three times: Pine Bluff, Stuttgart, and Helena. Now for the first
time in 70+ years one can’t fly from Little Rock to Memphis. Today commercial carriers eschew small cities. The hub system rules, and pity the town which once served as a hub but no longer does: Memphis, Cincinnati, and St Louis are veritable ghost airports. TRAVEL AGENCIES: For a time in the first part of this century my county boasted 30-plus full service travel agencies, and now you can count the number on the fingers of one hand. The airlines stopped paying commissions, and the Internet gave the public greater access. Agencies that were largely ticket mills were doomed. Now we exist by charging fees for our expertise, and we spend enormous amounts of time improving
ours. Sure, dear traveler, you can futz with the computer and possibly find the cheapest way to get from Portland to San Jose, but are there airlines or connections you have overlooked? Is your time worth nothing? You can book yourself on a flight to Budapest, but do you really know the nuances of the hotels and restaurants in your destination? Is it better to take a train from Amsterdam to Paris or to fly? In order to exist, today’s travel agencies must know a great deal about geography, hotels in each price category, local guides, shops, and restaurants. We have to be, in a sense, human computers, and we have to justify our charges. Many travel agencies failed because their staffs could not conceive of being informed.
STEAMSHIP: When Poe Travel opened its doors, more people took ships to Europe than flew. Today regular transatlantic voyages are largely a thing of the past (save for Cunard). Such ships as the SS France or the Queen Mary were considered huge when they carried 1,8002,000 odd people. Today there are “floating convention hotel ships” which accommodate 5,000 and more. The interesting trend though, in my opinion, for so-called “better” travel is to choose the small ships (which have proliferated). Most of the good smaller vessels are much like floating private clubs: one does not tip, shore excursions and normal wines are included, 200+ people disembark rather than mobs.
Poe Travel is more successful than at any time in our history. This success is essentially because of you, and I would like to send these musings with the usual admonition, dear traveler: PLEASE GO AWAY!

Hotel Le Fontanelle
Castello del Nero
Situated in southern Chianti’s rolling countryside on a panoramic hillock amid charming vineyards and orchards sits this lovingly restored 13th-century farmhouse deep in the heart of Tuscany’s countryside. The completion of a nearly decade-long restoration and renovation project has resulted in one of the region’s most hospitable retreats. Located at the end of a long and winding ribbon of a road, this low-rise aerie offers stunning views of Chianti. The manager is a gregarious fellow who usually greets guests as they enter the ochre-stone main building. This sophisticated and intimate hotel combines luxury with a delightful home-away-from-home feeling (if that feeling is one of being totally transported and relaxed). The tasteful guestrooms—think wooden-beamed ceilings and ceramic tiled floors—afford glorious views over the vineyards, wooded valley, or the hotel’s lovely swimming pool. The suites are like little villas in themselves (some with fireplaces). Tuscan cuisine is served in the rustic La Colonna restaurant where dinners can be enjoyed al fresco on the Belvedere terrace with its fantastic views. (Of note: the hotel produces its own wine and olive oil.) Should you manage to tear yourself away, shuttles are available to Florence and Sienna since parking can be nightmarish. Enjoy cooking classes, Vespa tours, cycling, hot air ballooning, or even zipping around in a red Ferrari.
More than 700 acres of rolling hills, olive groves, and grape vines surround Castello del Nero, a Tuscan castle just outside of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, a charming Italian village south of Florence. Built in the 12th century by the del Nero family, the estate references its noble heritage in all 50 rooms, each carefully restored and many with original frescoes of landscapes and Florentine flowers. Cashmere blankets and goose-down duvets are cozy in-room touches, but most guests pass the days elsewhere on the property, exploring the countryside on horseback, relaxing at the spa, or cooking with chef Giovanni Luca di Pirro during on-site Tuscan-cuisine cooking classes.
ROOM TO BOOK: Deluxe suites in the main building have fireplaces and 18th-century frescoes of local primrose blooms. INSIDER TIP: Book a private tasting in the wine cellar to sample olive oil and the Chianti, both produced on the estate.
Hotel Monteverdi Not everyone would have the guts or vision to convert part of a crumbling, 12th-century village at the end of a bumpy dirt road into a contemporary Tuscan retreat. But when American lawyer Michael Cioffi discovered Castiglioncello del Trinoro (population 25), just south of Montepulciano, that’s exactly what he decided to do. Celebrated Roman interior designer Ilaria Miani brought her rustic-meets-modern aesthetic—reclaimed-wood-beamed ceilings, C&C Milano linens, Carrara-marble bathrooms—to the 10-room hotel and three rental villas. Also in the hamlet: a standout farm-to-table restaurant (order the lavender risotto) and small gallery showing works by artists-in-residence. Simmons has traveled to 85 countries and then some; one of her most recent jaunts took her to Tunisia, and here she shares her passion for the place and its people.

I am going every where in the world and chose Tunisia randomly. I had to be in Milan for work and wanted to stop someplace on the way home to NYC. I knew NOTHING at all about the country — literally NOTHING — but figured there would be a direct flight from Milan, and it looked small enough on the map to get a good feeling for it in the time I had.
Q: What was one of your favorite experiences or most edifying moments? A: There were so many. I was treated so graciously by so many people. Invited to “break bread” with so many strangers. People were so kind to me. Definitely standing in The Sahara when it began to rain for the first time in over a decade will go down as one of the more amazing experiences of my life. Being allowed into the last synagogue in Tunis . . .
Q: What surprised you most about it? A: Everything! The rich culture. The diversity of the landscape. The fascinating history. The Colosseum. The ruins. The Sahara. The ancient mosaics. The food. It’s rich Jewish history and plight of the Jews. Literally everything. I simply cannot believe how undersold Tunisia is as a tourist destination.
Q: Favorite or most adventurous meal? A: I’m a vegetarian so I’m never that adventurous with food, but I really liked Lablabi, and Tabouna bread was an amazing surprise (looks like a regular bread stick but is infused with olive oil — yum!). Q: What’s your next destination? A: North Korea! SO excited!
