POE GO

Dear Traveler: If you have noticed travel magazines of late you will have seen that most coverage consists of lists of things like “The World’s Best Beaches” or the “50 Best Coffeehouses.” Writing as such tends to disappear; it is cheaper for the publishers to pay for hacks than it is for them to pay for actual writers. I thought I would follow this trend in this Poe Go and will inflict my lists upon you. They are, of course, totally subjective and full of whimsy, but then I suppose all lists are. I would like to see yours! My Ten Favorite Hotels

Often chosen by sweet memories and in no particular order of preference: • The Four Seasons Bosphorus Istanbul — the most opulent restoration the Continent has ever seen in what is now its largest city.

• The Ritz in Paris — Yes, we have the Georges V and the Bristol et al, and yet one is the Ritziest of them all. • The Peninsula in Hong Kong — Shanghai may be slowly stealing Hong Kong’s thunder, but the Peninsula is eternal.

• The Heathman Hotel in Portland — America has far glitzier hotels, but this one has all the little touches and a very memorable kitchen.

• The Ritz Carlton Montreal — Sherbrooke Street’s monarch, ravishingly redecorated, Canada’s best city hotel in arguably its most enjoyable city.

• Las Mañanitas in Cuernavaca — a true oasis just an hour away from the anarchy which is Mexico City.

• The Oriental in Bangkok — Everyone still calls it just that, and the most opulent suites on planet Earth are in its original wing.

• Hotel Sacher in Vienna — almost an extension of the State Opera with both long memories and contemporary élan as Vienna thrives again. • Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah, Iowa — the perfect small town American hotel in one of its prettiest small towns. • The Mount Nelson in Cape Town — my favorite hotel in Africa, its dowager queen. There are newer and trendier places, but the queen reigns.

3. Vienna 4. Galle (Sri Lanka) 5. Montreal 6. Montevideo 7. Paris 8. Butte 9. Naples 10. Krakow tied with St John’s With much less sentimentality, I would like to provide something the lists in the travel magazines often don’t cover:

Ten places I hope I never have to see again:

Again, let’s totally forego objectivity:

Here are ten places I would treasure for a return trip:

• Zurich • Las Vegas • Bucharest • Dubai • Luanda • Phoenix ties with Memphis • Sao Paulo • Kathmandu • Nantucket ties with Macao • Osaka Give some thought to your lists and let me know! And, as usual dear traveler, a parting admonition: PLEASE GO AWAY!

1. Istanbul 2. Luang Prabang (Laos)

Your Friendly Travel Agent, FRED

Lists continue: If a country can be defined as a place issuing its own postage stamps, I have been to 168 of them. The breakup of the late and lamented Yugoslavia helped me add to the list, so did the breakup of the less treasured Soviet Union, but there have been reverses — Germany unified!

POE TRAVEL’S AGENT REPORTS

Just Desserts (and desert)

This fall our own Angela Simon could be found “rocking the casbah” in Morocco on an illuminating Abercrombie & Kent adventure. And what an adventure it was! Angela wandered through the labyrinthine streets in the ancient medina in Fez and dined at a riad. A bodyguard (a professional boxer in his spare time) escorted Angela and her group through the city to “make sure the stragglers didn’t get lost or we didn’t get run over by a donkey.” Further proof that A&K always has your back. Angela then journeyed through the Sahara where she rode a camel (technically a dromedary), slept under the stars at a stylish tented camp, imbibed sundowners on the sand dunes, and swayed to the stirring sounds of traditional Gnaoua music round a campfire. In Marrakech, she stayed at the opulent Palais Namaskar and lunched at legendary La Mamounia. She also sipped mint tea at Amanjena and rug shopped at a souk. Along the way, Angela ate tons of tajines and sampled many a sweet, too. (Desserts abounded at each stop.) She toured a multitude of kashbahs, visited a pharmacy where she learned about the many exotic powders and potions made from spices, and had cocktails on a rooftop patio overlooking Medina. And those are but a few of the highlights. Naturally, we now refer to her as “Angela of Arabia.”

Beth Porter, with Janine Cifelli of Janine Cifelli Representation, recently spent a long weekend (that went by all too quickly) at the splendiferous Valley Trunk Estate in the British Virgin Islands. Located in Virgin Gorda, Valley Trunk Estate, originally built as a private home, now offers the ultimate exclusive experience for up to 16 of your favorite people. Named after the seasonally nesting Trunk Back turtles, the 19-acre property features exquisite gardens, through which Beth meandered, leading to a secluded beach (on which Beth lounged). Dining is by a French Michelin-star chef and can be served anywhere on the estate including the Balinese beach house — an open-air structure that was deconstructed, piece by piece in Bali and rebuilt. While there, you can practice yoga, receive a massage anywhere on the property, then combine the best of land with sea with use of

the estate’s 68-foot captained Bertram yacht, Xanadu. (Beth on Xanadu pictured here.) Not too shabby.

And did we mention the Hermès bath products in each room?! Sadly too big for smuggling home. Beth opted to do it all — and also opted to do nothing. A typical day included paddleboarding, yachting, snorkeling, having cocktails, frolicking in the ocean, and having more cocktails. Beth equally enjoyed relaxing poolside — nibbling on dried mango, papaya, and cashews harvested by the staff from the surrounded trees — and lazing on the beach, nibbling something equally tantalizing. Should none of the aforementioned activities appeal, however, one could opt to helicopter to St. Thomas for a round of golf . . . or go deep sea fishing . . . or play tennis. Oh, and should you need a word with billionaire Richard Branson, he’s just next door, on his own island. And they say no man is an island . . . not true in blissful BVI.

WHERE WILL THEY GO NEXT?

A-Wade We Go! This summer Stephanie Wade, her husband, John, their three children— Delia (18), Cogan (16), and Dixon (11)—along with her parents, Julie and Bill Haught, experienced a once-in-alifetime safari in Kenya and Tanzania with Africa House. Their guide for this adventure was third generation Kenyan, the always jovial Peter Cadot, who was extremely knowledgeable about every facet of wildlife and local tribes.

Then it was off to Ol Malo, a lodge owned by the wonderful Francombe family, where they got cozy with the lodge’s resident baby zebra. At Ol Malo, Stephanie says, you can get out into the land unlike other places with such activities as hiking and horseback riding. They rode camels to the Uaso Nyiro River and had a relaxing afternoon by the riverbank, complete with picnic and camel’s milk! When it was time to go, Andrew Francombe took Julie and Bill back to the lodge via helicopter.

“They really go above and beyond with making your stay special,” says Stephanie. They also visited a neighboring Samburu village and gathered round the fire as the matriarch told stories, and the Samburu warriors and maidens showed off their traditional dancing. The Haught/Wade group then headed to the tented camps, with Sala’s Camp in the Masai Mara as the favorite. They dined and played volleyball in the dry riverbed, and observed whole prides of lions and leopard and great snorting and kicking herds of wildebeest and zebra. Sala’s Camp looks directly into the “northern corridor,” the route taken between Tanzania and Kenya by these wildebeest; thereby making Sala’s the perfect place to watch the migration unfold. They began their journey at Giraffe Manor, where they breakfasted with their long-necked new friends as well as a motley crew of warthogs. (Fun fact: warthogs and giraffes enjoy each others’ company.) From there they visited the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage for the baby orphans’ evening feed (moving and oh-so-sweet).

They also they LOVED the sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Masai plains, home to over 1,500 species of birds, and (at the time) 1.3 million wildebeest. They were awestruck by the Great Migration and had an incredible perspective from the air. The Haught/Wade group then headed across the border to Tanzania and the Serengeti for more spectacular wildlife viewing including elephants, water buffalo, and even a rare sighting of rhino. The breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, one of the natural wonders of the world, was also on the itinerary as they enjoyed their last stop at the Plantation Lodge. A real treat after being in the bush!

“I love a parade...” Margaret Kemp and Mildred Cooper recently returned from a whirlwind trip to magical San Miguel de Allende, a UNESCO World Heritage Site favored by expats from northern climes. There they stayed at the beautiful Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, right in the town center. Cool, leafy gardens, stone arches, and traditional wooden doors surround pretty courtyards (lantern-lit at night) in this cluster of historic buildings. Peaceful though this is, step outside and you’re surrounded by San Miguel de Allende’s many colors, scents, and sounds. It’s not unusual to happen upon parade or other festivities which Margaret and Mildred did much to their delight.

and fish tacos

While there they also visited (and were wowed by) Rosewood’s new, dramatic property out from town. Since opening in 2011, Rosewood San Miguel de Allende has been recognized as one of the best hotels in Mexico and the world. Reminiscent of a grand hacienda, the hotel’s design was inspired by the rich history and authentic colonial architecture of its location. Margaret effused, “It’s not on the town square but is a short walk. It’s gorgeous, like being in a large hacienda, wonderful food, great spa and gym. It was built with weddings in mind. Right now 80% of their business is the Mexican market, but give it time. The American market will find it.”

PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE WITH SAN MIGUEL (and why you will, too:) • History • Architecture • Eclectic Shops • Cultural Mix • Food & Dining • Rooftops (specifically Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar at the Rosewood Resort!) • Art • Walkability • Jacaranda Trees • Dramatic Sun Rises & Sunsets

WHERE WILL THEY GO NEXT?

Teatime This October, Lacey James went on a mad romp through England and Scotland courtesy of Rocco Forte and Virgin Atlantic. She covered a lot of ground in her brief five-day jaunt, when not luxuriating at Browns in London or The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, that is. Like Queen Victoria before her, Lacey took Afternoon Tea at Brown’s complete with delectable scones and clotted cream. (There would be a series of afternoon teas.) She also sampled a new scotch at the ’60s-inspired Donovan Bar, named in honor of British photographer Terence Donovan and decorated with his (risqué) prints. Whilst there she grabbed a seat in “the naughty corner” just for the thrill. Next day, Lacey saw London from a different perspective on a scavenger hunt with Small Car Big City. After donning a tweed flat cap and bright blue boiler suit (à la “The Italian Job”), Lacey jumped in a vintage Mini Cooper and speed off on a Top Secret mission that took her from the Burlington Beadles

to St Paul’s Cathedral, pausing for this photo op at Graffiti Alley and even adding some graffiti of her own (all perfectly legal). Other stops included Bridget Jones’ flat where she reenacted a scene from the movie. Lacey enthuses, “The scavenger hunt is a great idea for families, teens especially, and a fun, different way to see the city.” Brilliant! In addition to seeing “Thriller,” another highlight included a nighttime private tour of the bewitching Sir John Soane’s Museum (a rare treat). She spied poppies at The Tower of London and took a boat ride on the Thames, tucked into some fabulous fish and chips and sampled mushy peas. She was game for trying grouse (served with feet and feathers and over pate) but found it fowl.

to leave, but when tea on The Royal Yacht Britannia awaits, one makes do. She dined on housemade sausage and sauerkraut at popular gastro pub Scran & Scallie, and the same at the Michelinstarred restaurant Number One in the hotel. Lacey enjoyed a final afternoon tea under the canopy of exotic palm trees at The Balmoral’s Palm Court before jetting back across the pond, where, alas and alack, she found that no one was serving the high tea to which she had become accustomed.

Aboard Virgin it was a quick hop to Edinburgh where kilted doormen welcomed Lacey to The Balmoral Hotel. (Is that the skirl of the bagpipes we hear?) With views of Edinburgh Castle, the Scott Monument, and Arthur’s Seat, the Balmoral is a hard place

Giddy up!

“You can choose to be a cowgirl or not. (or just dress like one)”

This fall, Ellison and longtime Poe pal Murry Newbern spent a splendid long weekend at The Ranch at Rock Creek. Ellison enthuses, “Visiting The Ranch at Rock Creek is like going on safari in the U.S., especially if you’re lucky enough to stay in one of those tents! You can do any manner of outdoorsy things—from fly fishing to horseback riding—or scary, outdoorsy things—like ropes courses, or you can do what I did—minimal hiking interspersed with fabulous meals, cocktails, and spa treatments.” Ellison opines that the Ranch is a place for all types and all ages—and a place for all seasons. “It’s sublime for Thanksgiving, Christmas, really any time of year,” she says. ”You can tuck in for a week or go for long-weekend.” And when you do go, says Ellison, “You can choose to be a cowgirl or not.” (Or just dress like one.) She likens it to a year-round camp for adults (without the homesickness and poison ivy and with better amenities, of course). Her one regret? Not enough time in the saloon, where you can sidle up to the bar and saddle up. (The barstools are saddles! Seriously!)

KUDO S AND KUDU S TO POE’S EAST AFRIC A SPEC IALIS TS A safari in the African wilderness features at the top of many a travel bucket list—and with good reason. And yet, Africa, more than most destinations, can seem a mysterious and formidable place to navigate—making it essential to choose the right people to show you the way. That’s why Poe Travel’s on-the-ground East Africa specialists at Africa House Safaris are an invaluable resource. Based in Kenya, Africa House has spent years perfecting the art of the classic African safari, taking care of every aspect of the process, from designing the perfect tailor-made itinerary to guiding guests through each stage of the trip. Co-founder David “Suggy” Sugden, who continues to guide safaris, was born and brought up on a ranch in the shadows of Mount Kenya and speaks several tribal dialects. He also pioneered treks in to Rwanda, Burundi, and the Eastern Congo; in short, no one understands the safari world better. Below see Poe clients rave about Suggy and Africa House: “Words cannot describe what a fabulous trip you put together for us, and I am soooo grateful. Suggy was a treat to be with and a wealth of information. . . . Even [our] 6-year-old had a wonderful time! Thanks to Poe and David, there was a baby animal at each place and French fries. What more could she want? It was a prefect trip.” —Stuart Cobb “We had the most amazing time ever!!!! It was truly magical. Our family absolutely adored Suggy and enjoyed his knowledge and expertise and his company. We have so many pictures and memories that we will never forget! Thanks for all that you did to make this trip so very special for us!” —Dr. Nayla Hatley “Just wanted to let you know what a fantastic trip we had. It was everything I could have imagined and even more. All three camps were fantastic, and the choice of locations and even the order in which we visited each camp was perfect! PICTURE YOUR ARRIVAL: You’re met at the airport by a car and driver, guided onto a private boat, then ferried across Lake Pichola—past Udaipur’s domed lakefront palaces—into the gardens and fountains of the Udaivilas estate. You’re then led to your soothing suite where, from your window, Udaipur—the city of lakes—sparkles in the sun. When sensory overload subsides, you wind your way through sprawling courtyards to a traditional Kashmiri gondola, where champagne and canapés await.

This is The Oberoi, Udaivilas. Standing on the 200-year-old hunting grounds of the Maharana of Mewar, the estate is spread over a luxurious 50 acres, which includes a 20-acre wildlife sanctuary. The Oberoi Udaivilas affords spectacular views across the verdant gardens and sparkling lake, and the hotel’s intricate layout of interconnecting domes and corridors reflects that of Udaipur itself. Truly swoon-worthy surroundings!

Travel + Leisure readers voted The Oberoi Udaivilas the Best Hotel in Asia for the 4th consecutive year!

Brigitte Vergnolle of Paris & Co. is our go-to guide for the “City of Lights.” She can create unique experiences tailored to your interests and, as Ellison says, “can make the impossible happen.” Get behind the scenes at Versailles or Roland Garros, make macaroons that rival Ladurée’s, go on a family scavenger hunt at the Louvre, have a private dinner party at Vaux le Vicomte, or learn how to make crème Chantilly in Chantilly . . . the possibilities are endless.

WHY WE’RE DIGGING CRYSTAL Only the all-inclusive Crystal Cruises has been voted World’s Best more than any other cruise line, hotel, or resort in history. While other lines have itemized their services with additional charges, Crystal maximizes the experience by eliminating additional transactions — further enhancing the ease and luxury of a Crystal cruise. In addition to attractive 2-for-1 fares plus Book Now Bonus Savings, you’ll now enjoy more overnight port stays, more opportunities for combination cruises without repeating destination cities, more 7- to 10-day voyages than ever before, plus the service, space, quality, and choices of the most awarded cruise line in the world.

“Bébé, you can drive my car...” Nicolas Gandilhon of Odyssée Prestige is Poe’s exclusive driver in France, or, as Ellison says, “our private concierge in Paris and beyond.” His winning personality and in-depth knowledge have made him a favorite of Poe clients (and it doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyes, too). Très charmant!
