‘The Ten Commandments’ makes its yearly return
Few movies still get yearly showings on broadcast television and “The Ten Commandments” is one of them. Legendary for its Oscar-winning special effects — highlighted by the parting of the Red Sea — and its iconic depiction of Moses by star Charlton Heston, the Cecil B. DeMille-directed 1956 epic movie gets its traditional holiday-season ABC telecast Saturday, April 12. As usual, the film occupies the entirety of that evening’s primetime schedule on the network. Others in principal roles include Yul Brynner, Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget and John Derek. Utilizing the VistaVision widescreen process, DeMille remade his own 1923 silent version of “The Ten Commandments” as the last feature he directed before his death, employing a massive cast that included some performers — some only in bit parts — who would later become better known in their careers. Among them: Woodrow (later “Woody”) Strode, Touch (later “Mike”) Connors, Clint Walker, Michael Ansara and “Family Affair’s” Kathy Garver.
“Cheers” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, April 6): The Boston bar “where everybody knows your name” is the setting of an all-day “Binge,” stretching into early the following morning — starting with the series pilot and ending with the finale that saw the NBC sitcom run for 11 seasons (1982-93). Ted Danson plays Sam Malone, the former Red Sox pitcher who owns the
