Billy Bob Thornton in “Landman”
By Sarah Passingham
Oil is not a clean business, in more ways than one. “Landman” returns for its highly anticipated second season Sunday, Nov. 16, on Paramount+, seeing the titular man contend with a new boss. Billy Bob Thornton (“Goliath”) stars as Tommy Norris, whose title of operations VP for M-Tex Oil has him wedged between the executive suite and the oilfields as he smooths out any and every wrinkle in the oil company’s day-to-day. This season, after her husband worked himself into an early grave, Cami Miller (Demi Moore, “The Substance,” 2024) steps into his shoes at the top of M-Tex Oil. “The only difference between me and my husband is I’m meaner,” Cami reassures a banquet room full of bank presidents in the official trailer for the upcoming season.
Though Cami is undeniably the boss, her appointment does not come without power struggles. Tommy is a man that can crack the truth of any situation with a well-timed monologue, and the new season’s trailer is no exception. “She owns it, but I run the company,” he says plainly over drinks with a doubter, clawing responsibility out of Cami’s hands behind the scenes. Thornton spoke to Deadline about the dynamic between Cami and Tommy, who have to work together more closely than ever before this season. Cami’s got to learn some of the business from Tommy, Thornton explained, “you can know something intellectually but what are the street smarts behind it? I know how to deal with these people she’s going to have to deal with. I just tell her, ‘Look, some of these deals you can take but
when it gets really weird and difficult, let me know because I know these guys.’”
Joining the cast this season is Academy Award nominee Sam Elliott (“A Star Is Born,” 2018) as Tommy’s father, who answers to “Pop” in the trailer. Whatever state Tommy and Pop’s relationship is kept in, something this season has moved the oil company fixer to trek out to Pop’s ranch, haul his dad home and into a seat at his dining room table. Also new this season is Stefania Spampinato (“Station 19”) as Gallino’s wife. Returning actors include Andy Garcia (“Pain Hustlers,” 2023) as Gallino; Ali Larter (“The Rookie”) as Tommy’s ex-wife Angela Norris; Jacob Lofland (“Joker: Folie a Deux,” 2024) as Tommy’s son Cooper; Michelle Randolph (“1923”) as Tommy’s daughter Ainsley; Paulina Chavez
(“Ashley Garcia: Genius in Love”) as Ariana Medina; Kayla Wallace (“When Calls the Heart”) as lawyer Rebecca Falcone; Mark Collie (“Nashville”) as Sheriff Walt Joeberg; James Jordan (“Lioness”) as engineer Dale Bradley; and Colm Feore (“The Umbrella Academy”) as Nathan. “Landman” is inspired by the podcast series “Boomtown,” about the modern-day West Texas oil boom. Podcast Host Christian Wallace co-created the streaming series with Paramount+ royalty, Taylor Sheridan, known for “Yellowstone” and its various interconnected sister series. While all of Sheridan’s series find their audience, “Landman” sits at the top of the ladder as the number one Paramount+ original series, setting viewership records for the streamer with its first season.

‘The Saint’ gave Val Kilmer a fine showcase
The 1997 movie version of “The Saint” offers a then-updated version of Simon Templar, novelist Leslie Charteris’s adventurer character who famously inspired a Roger Moore-starring 1960s television series, and the film gave Val Kilmer an excellent opportunity to tap into elements of action, humor and romance. Directed by Phillip Noyce (“Patriot Games,” 1992) with a wonderfully European flavor and supporting cast, it gets a number of showings in the coming days: Sunday, Nov. 16, on MGM+ Drive-In; Wednesday, Nov. 19, on MGM+; and Thursday, Nov. 20, on MGM+ Marquee. After the opening-credits sequence smartly provides background on the events that led Templar into his problem-solving lifestyle, the main story sees him employ various disguises while he contemplates stealing a cold-fusion breakthrough developed by an Oxford University scientist (Elisabeth Shue, a charmingly vulnerable heroine here). The tender love story that develops between them is among the movie’s chief highlights, and the aforementioned Moore is factored cleverly into the closing moments of the tale.
“Sanford & Son” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Nov. 16): After a long career in standup comedy, Redd Foxx became a television star in this Norman Lear-produced (with his then-partner, Bud Yorkin) adaptation of England’s “Steptoe and Son.” Aired by NBC from 1972 to 1977, the show casts Foxx as hugely opinionated Los Angeles junkman Fred Sanford, who often teams with his son Lamont (Demond Wilson) in schemes to better their lot in life. Also shown weeknights on Catchy Comedy, the series splits one of the channel’s “Binge” days here with a later Foxx sitcom, “The Royal Family.”
