After establishing himself on “Saturday Night Live,” Eddie Murphy found immediate movie stardom in “48 HRS.,” the 1982 action-comedy movie that Paramount+ With Showtime presents Tuesday, April 15, and Wednesday, April 16. Nick Nolte is nominally the picture’s top-billed star, but Murphy pretty much steals it from his first moment on screen as a convict sprung by a weary police detective (Nolte) to search San Francisco for a couple of escaped inmates. While there’s considerable violence — no surprise from a film co-written and directed by Walter Hill (“The Warriors”) — there’s also lots of room for Murphy’s humor, which he displays with great confidence throughout the picture. He particularly stops the show in a sequence at a nightclub where the others present, including the bartender (Peter Jason), aren’t very welcoming. It didn’t take long for Murphy to follow this up with two more hits, “Trading Places” (1983) and the original “Beverly Hills Cop” (1984); he reunited with Nolte for the 1990 sequel “Another 48 HRS.,” which Paramount+ With Showtime is also running this month.
“Pulp Fiction” (Hulu and Peacock, streaming): Quentin Tarantino has earned much acclaim during his filmmaking career, and this 1994 drama is a prime reason why. The crime story is a pastiche of various characters and situations, with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson particularly notable as partnered killers on the hunt for a particularly coveted briefcase. Travolta’s dance sequence with Uma Thurman, who plays the wife of his character’s boss (Ving Rhames), is one of the truly iconic scenes in film history. The great cast also includes Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Harvey Keitel, Maria de Medeiros, Eric Stoltz, Christopher Walken and Rosanna Arquette.
