I can’t believe a new year is only a few months away.

The holiday season is about to begin, and the key to enjoying the hustle and bustle – rather than feeling as though you’re getting run over by it – is preparation!

In a similar approach, the Library’s Board of Trustees and Staff are preparing for the future by crafting a new Strategic Plan. We received valuable feedback from your surveys and interviews. Based on the information we collected, the plan we are creating will be a framework to assist us in choosing the way the Library functions and how it serves – and even anticipates – the needs of our patrons. We will work to ensure the Elk Grove Village Public Library is a center for curiosity, activity, information, technological access, and community for everyone. Our priority is centered on the people of Elk Grove Village. After all, libraries are about people, and this place belongs to you.

As we wrap up another successful year, the Library’s Board of Trustees, Staff and I extend our gratitude for your support.

We wish you joyful, peaceful holidays, and look forward to seeing you in 2020!

Featured Programs and Events Adult Winter Reading Program – “There’s No Place Like the Library!”

January 19–March 15 Starting Sunday, January 19, follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Adult Reference Desk to sign up for the 2020 Winter Reading Program, “There’s No Place Like the Library!”

Makerspace Special Event - Build a 3D Printed Hand

Saturday, January 11 from 2-4pm Give a kid in need a hand! Join us in welcoming Jeremy Simon from the e-NABLE Community, which 3D prints inexpensive prosthetic limbs. We will work together in teams to assemble several of their “Unlimbited Phoenix Hands”, which will then be donated to those in need. Space is limited to 12.

Young Elvis Christmas Show

Wednesday, December 18 at 7pm Back by popular demand, it’s Hugo Colin bringing us his Young Elvis Christmas show. He will perform the classic songs that will get you ready for the holiday season. With sharp attention to history, craftsmanship, choreography and authenticity, Hugo, presents a dynamic and educational tribute to the legend with a clear-cut mission statement: keep Elvis’ memory, image, and music alive in Chicagoland.

Thursday, February 27 from 10:15am-4:30pm Come join us for lunch and a show at the Drury Lane Theatre. We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch of mixed green salad, grilled chicken breast with Marsala sauce, chocolate ice cream sundae, coffee, and hot/cold tea. After lunch, we will watch the Tony Award winning musical, An American in Paris. A tale inspired by hope and possibility, An American in Paris brings breathtaking moments of dance and song to the stage, telling the story of a young American soldier, a beautiful French girl, and an indomitable European city. Come away with Jerry Mulligan, an American GI doing his best to make it as a painter in the bustling city of Paris following the end of World War II, and Lise Dassin, a French ballerina yearning for the spotlight.

Black History Month Qello Concert: Marvin Gaye

Monday, February 3 at 7pm Marvin Gaye is one of the legends of Black American music. Behind The Legend is a musical biography of Marvin Gaye with a special focus on the later period of his life.

It has contributions from Gaye’s immediate family and from musicians and producers who worked with him. Also included is rare family archive footage of his exile periods in Belgium and Hawaii as well as intimate coverage of his bouts of drug abuse and his triumphant return to Los Angeles. Run time: 1hr

Pre-Civil War Quilts: The Secret Codes to Freedom on the Underground Railroad R Monday, February 17 at 7pm Join Connie Martin as she discusses Pre-Civil War quilts and their significance to the freedom of slaves through the Underground Railroad. She will tell the fascinating family stories of how these quilt codes were used by her ancestors, their meanings, and the interpretations that have been passed down to her; a 6th generation descendant of captured American slaves. Replicas of actual quilts that slaves used on their journey will be displayed and the meanings behind the different patterns will be discussed.

Great Decisions Discussion Group

WINTER READING PROGRAM Winter Reading Program

Tic-Tac-Snow!

Children of all ages December 27 - February 23 Reading is SNOW much fun! Join the Youth Services’ Winter Reading Program for children birth through 8th grade. Read five books to your child or read on your own for 60 minutes each week and earn a ticket to enter into our final prize drawing.

Prizes will include gift cards to Target, Classic Cinema Theatres and Baskin Robbins. The drawing will take place at 11am on February 24. Once per week, you can also play a game at the Youth Reference Desk to try to complete a Tic-Tac-Snow and win a free book.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten Join our ongoing, self-paced reading program that encourages families to read aloud to their children 0-5 years old! The goal is to read 1,000 books to your child before he or she enters Kindergarten. It is a self-paced program that lets you decide how often and how long you read to your child. You will receive reading incentives along the way. Sign up any day at the Youth Services Reference Desk to get started!

With the help of their instructors, create a zip-line racer while learning how electronic circuits and power work together. 2nd to 5th grade without parent* Monday, January 27 from 6:30-7:30pm Gain exposure to the Scratch block based visual programming language with Code Ninjas®! Discover how to create interactive stories, games, and animations. Have a blast during this introductory class while learning math, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. *Parents may attend the last 15 minutes of class.

Coding and Robotics Workshop R 2nd-5th grade without parent Sundays: February 16 and February 23 from 2:30-4pm Code Ninjas® will help you develop mad ninja skills while you create your own video game using the Scratch programming language.

Have fun exploring a variety of Robotics activities at the end of each session. Space is limited to 15. Previous exposure to Scratch or other block based coding is not required. Note: This is a two-session workshop. Session Two is a continuation of Session One. Please do not register unless you can attend both sessions.

The Brave Way Self-Defense Training Class

Grades 6 -12 Wednesday, February 5 from 3-5pm Learn the skills necessary to help you properly defend yourself against an attacker using this guided, hands-on method. The Brave Way self-defense techniques work regardless of your age, size, strength, speed, experience or physical ability. Note: The participant’s legal guardian must sign a waiver and pay a non-refundable, supplemental fee of $10 (cash or check only) at the time of in-person registration at the Youth Services Reference Desk.
