WELCOME TO...

elcome to the August/September issue of Garden Centre Retail. This is usually our biggest issue of the year, but the worldwide pandemic has meant that the UK’s leading garden retail show, Glee, has been cancelled for this year. It’s such a shame; Glee is an event buzzing with excitement every year, but the health and wellbeing of the industry is far more important. It’s not all bad, though. If you were planning on congregating at the this eptem er to find the info on the latest trends and products introduced to the marketplace, Garden Centre Retail is now the place to be. We’ve got a big feature on the Virtual Glee that will be happening, and information on the products and services that would have been showcased at the event. t continues to e a difficult trading time for usinesses ut the government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme is going towards remedying this. Dobbies has taken the necessary steps to allow customers into the restaurants in its stores, and has used the scheme to good effect so far. It’s worth remembering that this pandemic will end at some point. We may get a second wave, we may not, but the entrepreneurialism shown in this industry during the COVID-19 out reak has een nothing short of rilliant he di ersification into e-commerce, click and collect, home delivery and all the other routes to market that have been introduced or expanded on goes to show that this resilient industry will continue to be the leading retail industry in the country. We’ll all be back stronger. See you in a couple of months’ time.

GCA joins forces with GIMA

NEWS CENTRE Glee falls victim to coronavirus

T

he industry’s biggest and best trade exhibition, Glee, has become the latest business to business event to get cancelled due to coronavirus.

Hyve, the organiser of Glee and the co-located Pawexpo, the premium pet trade show, people and the industry, announced changes to the scheduled event in 2020. s a re ection on conversations between the organisers and the garden and pet retail market, Hyve made the decision that Glee and Pawexpo 2020 will not take place this year. Glee and Pawexpo will return as a live event at the NEC in 2021. The team behind Glee and Pawexpo will instead host a virtual forum for the pet and garden retail markets this autumn, taking place on 15 and 16 September 2020. More information on this online event will be available on the website in due course.

News.indd 6

“We have been listening to both our exhibitors and visitors, and the feedback from garden retailers has been incredibly supportive. That has enabled us to take a fresh approach and bring the community together through the launch of a brand-new virtual forum.” says Matthew Mein, event director. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to provide a new platform for interactive industry discussions and product discovery. We are also looking forward to when the industry can meet again in person both at Glee at Spring Fair in February 2021, and Glee and Pawexpo 2021 taking place 14-16 September.” “We’re delighted that Glee is launching a virtual forum”, says Boyd Douglas-Davies, PR and communications director at British Garden Centres Group. “We are looking forward to fully engaging with this in September. Glee is such a pivotal point in the year, missing a year was never an option for us. We wish Glee’s virtual forum every success and look forward to meeting everyone in person again in 2021.” www.gleebirmingham.com

new joint initiative between the GCA and GIMA has launched to enable debate and communication between retailers and suppliers. A programme of joint virtual forums between members of both associations has been created to aid healthy debate to enable a stronger, more resilient, and dynamic supply chain going forward. Iain Wylie, GCA chief executive explains: “We are delighted to have joined forces with GIMA to create a space where members of both associations can come together to discuss the industry and how we move forward after the recent COVID restrictions and closures. ur first forum took place on July 14 and we heard from representatives from both the GCA and GIMA who discussed the pressures everyone faced and how we could work together to come

up with improvements that will help us all in the medium to longer term.” Vicky Nuttall, GIMA director, says: “After a prolonged and unprecedented period of heightened demand for gardening products, both retailers and the supply chain have been put under severe pressure. Many of whom have had to reinvent their businesses overnight. Iain and I posed a series of questions to our panel about their experiences over the last few months. “It soon became clear that suppliers across all categories had experienced similar challenges keeping up with the nonstop demand for gardening products leading to stock availability issues and extended lead times.” The virtual forums will continue to take place during the next six to 12 months. Sessions are free and exclusive to members of both trade associations. Registration details for the next event will be sent to members shortly. www.gima.org.uk www.gca.org.uk

spoga+gafa suspends for 2020, changing to new date

A

t the request of the industry, Koelnmesse is permanently moving the date for spoga gafa to the first half of the year. In future, this means that the largest garden lifestyle trade fair in the world will be held at a time more convenient for orders by large segments of the industry. On rescheduling spoga gafa to the first half of the year, Koelnmesse COO Oliver Frese says: “The aim of our conversations with the industry is to work together to give a strong trade fair

a chance to gain even more strength and market relevance. “The focus here is on the ordering behaviour seen in many parts of the industry, which has evolved over the years. In order to do an even more effective job of taking this into account, starting next year, spoga+gafa will be held permanently at the end of May or the beginning of June.” Further information will follow shortly. www.spogagafa.com

Skylark Garden Centre tribute to NHS heroes and carers

A

tribute has been paid to NHS heroes and carers working on the frontline amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic by Skylark Garden Centre. The Fenland garden centre, near March, is famous for its spectacular maize maze designs which can be seen perfectly from the skies. Owner Edward Gowler, owner and his team have decided this time they would say thank you to the NHS and the hard-working carers. They planted over a million maize plants in their 12-acre field then cut out km of pathways through the plants. When viewed from the air,

the maze spells out ‘Skylark Thanks NHS’ with a giant heart which, on its own, is over an acre in size. It took over three days to design and cut out the pathways using GPS to plot the image. Mr Gowler says: “We have been out clapping for carers every week, but I wanted to do something more to say thank you to the amazing frontline staff in the NHS and carers who have put their lives on the line to see us through the worst of COVID-19.” The maze will be open for visitors until the start of September. www.skylarkgardencentre. co.uk

Sainsbury’s to supply own-label products to Dobbies Garden Centres

S

ainsbury’s has built on its wholesale ambitions with a deal to sell its own-label range at Dobbies Garden Centres. The exclusive partnership launched at the garden centre chain’s Edinburgh store at the end of July. The range will include more than 3,000 products, including fresh and frozen produce, ambient and chilled, as well as other grocery lines.

www.gardencentreretail.com

News.indd 7

The move looks set to signal the end of an agreement Dobbies has with buying group Nisa, which struck a deal to supply a range of everyday groceries at the garden retailer in March 2019.

However a Dobbies spokeswoman explains: “Our relationship with Nisa will continue for the time being in the stores that aren’t trialling Sainsbury’s. We are in further discussions with our relevant suppliers and will update in due course.” Ahead of the launch, CEO Graeme Jenkins said: “The partnership between Dobbies and Sainsbury’s is an excellent

fit with a shared goal of offering the best to our customers. “By complementing our existing garden centre ranges with a comprehensive food and grocery offer, we will offer our customers a convenient solution for their grocery needs. We look forward to launching our first new-look food hall at Edinburgh in late July.” www.dobbies.com

or the garden trade, September is all about Glee, but the cancellation of this year’s show due to the COVID-19 pandemic has failed to dampen suppliers’ enthusiasm to support retailers with innovation. The halls of the NEC may be lying empty, but GIMA members are pressing ahead with launches – here’s a glimpse of what’s new for 2021. Darlac is expanding its tool ranges, designed to drive sales in 2021. Its four new products include secateurs with a hard-wearing, tough, titanium blade,

edging shears, a lightweight double-sided rake and an addition to its bamboo range – a hand rake. Darlac’s brand manager, Kasia Krezel said: “Bamboo has the tensile strength of steel and is recognised as one of the fastest growing plants in the world which can be harvested annually and does not require the use of fertilisers. This not only makes bamboo far more productive when compared to trees Darlac per acre, but it is also more ecofriendly, safeguarding tropical rainforests by preventing deforestation or the permanent destruction of forests.” Gardena claims that market trends demonstrate a big focus on grow-yourown and sustainable, natural solutions for plant protection. Gardena’s UK trade marketing manager, Taryn Griesse, explains: “Gardena’s new range of pump and pressure sprayers from 0.45L to 12L capacity, now offer a range of improved features such as an insertable filter for filling self brewed liquids and EasyPump battery solution – so no pumping is required on certain models.” Tarryn adds: “Gardens are increasingly associated with wellness and relaxation, and used as outdoor living spaces. NEW LOOK FOR JOHNSONS MICROGREENS

Johnsons has redesigned its popular Microgreens seed range for the 2021 season. With new look packets and point of sale, the collection of eight varieties and two high quality growing kits provide all year round greens, from a windowsill.

Each windowsill friendly kit comprises of a reusable caterpillar shaped propagator tray and lid along with basil, pepper (sweet) and tomato seeds. It also contains a handy leaflet with clear instructions, growing tips and a pizza recipe, plus mess-free expandable compost pellets and wooden labels on which children can write the variety they are growing. Available in outers of just four or on the stand as part of the Little Gardeners collection.

Johnsons Extends Organic Offering

The refreshed packets introduce colour bands for easy identification of each variety and the display stands include new price coded header cards. The packaging design has also been updated for the Microgreens growing kit and seed sprouter. Microgreens are virtually ‘instant’ vegetables that can be grown indoors. Easy and quick to grow, some varieties can be ready to pick in as little as two weeks, with the vitamin-rich leaves providing a fresh intensity to meals. The seed range includes beetroot, fenugreek and radish for leaf and have RRPs starting from £2.20. The Microgreens Growing Kit (RRP £4.99) is a high quality reusable growing tray which includes three packets of seeds. Once the ‘micro leaves’ are ready, Johnsons compact Micro Snips (RRP £3.99), with spring action handles, are an easy way to harvest your crops. The Microgreens Kitchen Seed Sprouter has an RRP £11.99 and is a convenient and economical way to produce continuous crops of fresh seed sprouts such as alfalfa and mung beans, as well as the baby leaves of microgreens.

Organic growing continues to be an increasingly popular trend and more recently gardeners have been looking to include growing their flowers from organic seed. In response to this, Johnsons have added 15 new organic flower seeds to the existing range of 38 organic vegetables. Produced without the use of pesticides or other chemicals, these beautiful flowers are a great introduction for gardeners interested in organic home-gardening. Many varieties will also help attract bees and other pollinators to the garden.

SERVICES

The following is a round up of the services that would’ve been on show at this year’s Glee in September

EOTHO Scheme Corby & Fellas Corby & Fellas has upgraded its WinRetail EPoS module to handle the government’s EOTHO scheme, which starts on 3 August. The scheme gives diners in cafes/restaurants a discount of up to £10 each. Although simple in concept, it requires the number of diners, the cost of food and drinks (excluding alcohol and tips) to be considered when calculating the customer’s bill. WinRetail EPoS does this automatically, without the need for calculators at the till. www.corbyfellas.com

Temporary Walkway Fordingbridge Fordingbridge has been listening to its customer requests from within the garden centre industry. Following reopening and restrictions on entry, many stores faced queuing customers waiting to enter their stores. While fair weather presented little issue, owners reported that customer numbers dropped on days of excessive hot sun and especially rain. The long-standing, trusted company reacted, with the development of a covered walkway which can e installed promptly and efficiently with no groundworks. www.fordingbridge.co.uk

Bespoke Loyalty Scheme App Garden Connect

Timber Displays is an established company set up to provide treated timber display products to the garden centre and nursery industry. Although it won’t be able to show you its products in person this year at the shows, it is still very much open for business and can offer a full range of products to suit your needs and to add an attractive feature to your outlet.

Garden Connect has launched its new bespoke loyalty scheme app for garden centres. The app is fully integrated with ePOS systems like OpSuite and offers personal coupons and instant promotions to cardholders. The free app is developed and branded for individual garden centres. Customers can also use the app as a digital card, access personal details and their points history.
