WELCOME

Every year we are amazed by the incredible projects that are submitted into the awards. It’s incredible how the bar keeps getting raised by the schemes we see being submitted; this is demonstration of how landscapers and garden designers keep pushing boundaries with their innovation and creativity.

This year has seen another step change and sees the Pro Landscaper Project Awards introduce more categories so that we can recognise and celebrate projects up to the value of £250,000.

This has been another record year for entries with the full shortlist across the 16 categories featured in this brochure. So firstly, let’s celebrate and congratulate all these projects that have been recognised by making it, which is an incredible achievement. They have been delivered by both established and emerging stars who we will no doubt be hearing even more about.

Thank you to our esteemed panel of judges – who are featured on page 34 – for supporting the awards and helping us determine the individual category and Supreme Winner. They had an incredibly difficult job, and it was great to hear from them just how strong this year’s submissions were.

The judges said the entries were “inspiring to see” and that the “standard is exceptional”. One added that they “really enjoy seeing the young companies rise and the opportunity these awards provide.”

You can read about each of the winning projects and the creativity, technical ability and problem-solving skills that made them stand out.

Finally, thank you to our headline partner Hortus Loci Landscapes for allowing us to be able to put on these awards and thank you also to all our other partners for their support.

A build-only project which has been started and completed by the team, shows excellent core skills, lovely finish, great customer feedback, excellent value for money, effective use of products and demonstrates quality and technical ability. The project had to match the customer brief and have been completed on time and as detailed.

CONTEMPORARY COURTYARD | KIRMAN DESIGN

A fully turfed area before, this southwest-facing garden has been transformed into the ideal outdoor space, day or night. The clients were looking for a simple and modern design that was in keeping with the property, with two main seating areas – one for al fresco dining, and another smaller, cosier spot away from the house with a firepit. Kirman Design focused on using high-quality, premium products to create these, from the warm finish of the porcelain paving to the width of the decking which enabled the team to have minimal joints in the floating bench, creating the desired effect. Judges praised the “excellent use of materials”, including the Corten steel elements. “A well thought out process and detailed design and construction.”

UNDER £50,000

We were looking for a special feature which has been built. It needed to be the standout part of the garden but fit within the setting. It needed to be unique and show good use of products whilst adding value to the garden.

SANCTUM POD | KALKSCHMIDT LANDSCAPE & GARDEN DESIGN

SPECIAL FEATURE WINNER SHORTLISTED

Cocooning arches of sustainably sourced, black charred wood form the Sanctum Pod, a bespoke 3.4m by 3.6m self-standing garden sanctuary designed to whisk employees away from screens into a moment of serenity. It has been designed as a haven for them to relax and recharge, with a gentle water feature surrounded by shade-loving greenery. The striking feature was first unveiled at last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, winning a highly coveted Gold medal. Thermally treated Abodo wood originating from the Pinus radiata forms the pods cladding, seating elements and cocooning arches, and a hand-carved stone etched with ‘SANCTVM’ was visible behind the timber pod at the show. “Exquisitely executed design that maximises every centimetre of the space to deliver a beautifully immersive experience,” said judges.

PLANTING DESIGN WINNER

Planting design that has been completed for less than £25,000. An understanding of the setting of the garden, client’s requirements, plants working well together, the structure of the planting design, and year-round interest needed to be demonstrated.

SW4 - FERNDALE | GRDN LANDSCAPE + GARDEN DESIGN

SHORTLISTED UNDER £25,000

For this unique residential project – which combines a family home with a private gallery for their business – GRDN was appointed to design and implement the planting, working with the level changes to connect the garden with the interior and exterior spaces. The client also wanted the planting to soften the existing hard landscaping, with year-round interest complemented by seasonal variation, whilst being low maintenance and resilient to a warming climate. GRDN designed a rich, layered planting scheme that complements the architecture and enhances the experience of the home. Judges praised the “good immersive planting and good use of layering, working well with the layout.” Raised beds invite the children to participate in growing, and pollinator-friendly planting attracts birds and insects, enhancing biodiversity.

A design-only project. The design had to have been built, show excellent core design skills matching clients’ briefs, follow a good structure of communication (client/landscaper), great customer feedback, excellent value for money, and effective use of products/plants. The design had to match the customer brief and have been completed on time and as detailed.

CONTEMPORARY EXOTIC GARDEN | STOCKLEY LANDSCAPE & GARDEN DESIGN

An unsuccessful design that had been built a few years ago had left the clients with deteriorating paths and nowhere to sit and relax. So, they were looking to overhaul it with an exotic garden inspired by their travels to Vietnam and Cambodia. They wanted to retain some of the existing structures, including a garden building that they used as a studio and gym, a greenhouse and a wildlife pond. Stockley Landscape & Design created what judges described as an “impactful transformation”. The new hardscaping not only works well with the existing features but also ties the different areas together seamlessly, transforming the garden into a functional, inspiring place. “A very creative design that makes the most of a difficult site.”

£50,000 - £100,000

A build-only project which has been started and completed by the team, shows excellent core skills, lovely finish, great customer feedback, excellent value for money, effective use of products and demonstrates quality and technical ability. The project had to match the customer brief and have been completed on time and as detailed.

THE ARCHES | JDS LANDSCAPES

With a design from awardwinning landscape designer Lynn Cordall already, the client brought JDS Landscapes on board to expand on this and implement it after seeing a previous project the Cheshirebased design and build company had completed. It put forward a ‘show garden’ theme around outdoor living, casual seating and open spaces, incorporating an outdoor kitchen and fire pit. Creating a modern, low maintenance space with different zones was key. The team at JDS Landscapes stepped outside of its comfort zone and embraced the challenges of the project to deliver what judges called a “very well delivered” garden. The client was so impressed with the end result that they have invited JDS Landscapes to redesign the front of the property later this year.

THE FROMIE VILLA GREEN & GORGEOUS
WOODLAND LODGE ROTHER GARDEN DESIGN AND BUILD LTD

UNDER £100,000

Hard landscaping is the key to any successful project. This award highlights exceptional hard landscaping work. It had to be in keeping with the overall garden but standout within its own right whilst delivering quality and meeting or exceeding the client’s brief, all for under £100,000.

HARD LANDSCAPING WINNER

THE FAMILY PARTY GARDEN | HARRIS GARDEN DESIGN & LANDSCAPING

Being able to host large gatherings was at the heart of this garden, with spaces that prioritise usability and ease of movement. It also needed to accommodate families with young children, with clear zones for entertaining and informal children’s play areas, and the hard surfacing was to blend seamlessly where it connected with the interior flooring of the kitchen-diner through the expansive corner bi-fold doors of the recently completed home. Harris Garden Design & Landscaping provided a flawless indoor-outdoor connection, using planting alongside 11 new trees and 15 linear metres of mature beech hedging to further enhance the space. Judges called it a “lovely scheme” with “clever details” and “great use of materials”.

SHORTLISTED

£50,000 - £100,000 In

This category highlights a design and build project. It had to have been started and completed by the team, show excellent core skills, meeting the customer’s requirements, great customer feedback, great value for money, good use of products and demonstrate quality and technical ability. The project had to match the customer brief and have been completed on time and as detailed.

DESIGN AND BUILD WINNER

LINGFIELD ROAD | TOM HOWARD GARDEN DESIGN & LANDSCAPING LTD

After renting out their property for several years, the owners were ready to return to their home and make it their own again. A large courtyard and central staircase leading up to the garden above had been added as part of a basement extension two decades prior, but it had become uninviting and seldom used. So, Tom Howard Garden Design & Landscaping was brought in to reimagine the space with a design that embraced the courtyard’s scale, softened its edges, and transformed it from a cold void into a welcoming, multi-functional outdoor room. Since completion, it has become one of the designer’s favourite projects to date. “The design was exceptionally well built out and the planting integrates it beautifully - an outright winner,” commented the judges.

UNDER £50,000

Both designers and landscapers could enter this category. Consideration for the project’s environmental impact had to be showcased, whether through incorporating biodiversity, choosing sustainably sourced or reclaimed materials, or ensuring the garden’s longevity. Plant choice was also integral, and the project had to have been completed on time and to a high standard.

SUSTAINABLE GARDEN WINNER

THE MEANWHILE GARDEN | THE BETH CHATTO GARDENS

SHORTLISTED

A disused brownfield site in the centre of Colchester has been transformed into this temporary public pocket park. It has been designed to be enjoyable, engaging and educational for the public, highlighting the importance of sustainability through minimal interventions and recycling of materials. Existing vegetation on the brownfield site has been complemented with a selection of introduced drought tolerant plants planted into recycled aggregates. Garden designer Darryl Moore wanted to create a garden as creatively, quickly and cheaply as possible, to serve as a blueprint and inspiration for community groups in other areas, and the garden has been embraced by the local public. Judges were impressed by the “pioneering ideas to create beauty in the mundane,” calling it “a brilliant collaboration”.

The design had to have been completed on time and as detailed.

THE TRANQUIL GARDEN | ROSEMARY COLDSTREAM GARDEN DESIGN

A copper water feature is the centrepiece of this garden, designed by multi-award-winning Rosemary Coldstream Garden Design. The clients wanted a garden that provided enjoyment throughout the year and to bring more wildlife into it through the planting. They also wanted to make the most of the unique, triangular shaped plot, so Coldstream designed several distinct spaces each with their own character and suited to the different aspects, while at the same time linking them all together. The drought tolerant planting at the front of the house also now attracts the local wildlife. Judges said the garden – built by Landesigns – is “a remarkably comprehensive and imaginative design for a complex plot” and that it “demonstrates the value of professional garden design.”

BOUTIQUE NATURAL GARDEN ACACIA GARDENS LTD ©Richard Bloom

UNDER £50,000

This category is for the garden projects that aren’t permanent – whether that be a show garden, an installation used to raise awareness for a cause, or a pop-up garden for shoppers to enjoy for the summer at a shopping centre, for example. We were looking for a clear design flair, excellent build capabilities and a solution to any tricky areas that often come with short-timespan gardens.

TEMPORARY INSTALLATION WINNER

In partnership with

SANCTUM | KALKSCHMIDT LANDSCAPE & GARDEN DESIGN

It took a 70-strong team of volunteers, sponsors and skilled professionals to build this Gold-medal winning container garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Kalkschmidt Landscape & Garden Design created the space as a sanctuary for a corporate campus for employees to relax and recharge. The Sanctum garden used more than 400 pieces of charred, oiled Abodo wood and buff sandstone, which added a tactile warmth. This was complemented by a tranquil water feature and shade-tolerant planting with subdued colours of primarily greens and hints of white and burgundy. Hornbeam hedges help to create an intimate, cohesive retreat. “Great planting and use of materials, which provides a perfect sanctuary,” said judges. “Exquisitely designed and beautifully constructed.”

The design needed to match the customer brief and have been completed on time and as detailed.

EATON SQUARE TERRACE & BALCONIES | MAÏTANNE HUNT

DESIGN WINNER SHORTLISTED

Both the completed roof terrace and balcony schemes surpassed even Maïtanne Hunt’s expectations, and the clients were so thrilled that they cancelled their summer holiday to spend more time on the terrace and now work in the rooms that have the best view of the balconies. The clients wanted a stylish, functional, and welcoming space offering areas for entertaining, cooking, and relaxation, while being adaptable to extreme sun and wind on the exposed penthouse roof terrace. They now have various seating areas, a fully equipped kitchen unit, and an abundance of planting. The colours of the plants and materials complemented each other harmoniously and blended in with the cityscape without being too noticeable. “A fabulous transformation of what was a tricky space with a great planting scheme,” said the judges.

E1 EAST ARBOUR ST | GRDN LANDSCAPE + GARDEN DESIGN

SHORTLISTED UNDER £50,000

Access to this compact, terraced garden in East London proved difficult – but that didn’t stop GRDN from delivering a calm, contemporary outdoor space that feels both refined and inviting. The clients were looking for a series of distinct yet interconnected areas that flowed naturally throughout the garden and that brought as much lush greenery as possible close to the house, integrating the existing Acer and level changes. A restrained, modern, and highquality material palette was chosen to achieve a minimal yet refined aesthetic, creating a tranquil garden that now feels layered and generous. It’s a “polished, immersive garden with exceptional detail,” according to judges. “Every design and technical choice is deliberate and beautifully executed. A top-tier submission, both in drawings and on-the-ground finish.

AQUA EDEN DESIGN STUDIO AND WATER GARDEN CENTRE | DU WATERSCAPES

When DU Waterscapes received the keys to its first dedicated design studio, it wanted to create a garden that would inspire clients to fall in love with water gardening. The space would act as a showcase for its work as well as an educational hub for the company’s new venture, Aqua Eden. The team designed a 4x3m ecosystem pond with a 1.5m stream and a small patio made from natural pennant slabs sliced from boulders. Every element was chosen to embody the principles it teaches, from naturalistic rock placement and integrated planting pockets to pond ecology and the connection between home, garden, and water. “A creative use of space and a natural looking water feature, established in such a short space of time,” commented judges.

SHORTLISTED

COMMUNITY GREEN SPACE WINNER

In this category, we were looking to highlight a garden created on a budget of less than £250,000, for a community. This could be a charity garden on a high street, a memorial garden at a hospice, or an area for children to enjoy at a community centre, for example. In essence, this garden should be used by a wide range of people and have elements that reflect that. Great design skills and top-quality execution in the build were a must.

THE WATER SAVING GARDEN | CHILTERN GARDEN DESIGN

SHORTLISTED UNDER £250,000

The Water Saving Garden first appeared at last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, taking 10 days to build as one of the Container Gardens. Chiltern Garden Design designed it as a courtyard garden to showcase the importance of and affordable ways to capture, store and reuse rainwater, highlighting the need to save precious drinking water and save our Chalk Streams. Since the show, it has been relocated to Iver Environmental Centre – the winners of a competition by the garden’s sponsor, Affinity Water – which has a range of different areas and habitats to encourage young people to work in and discover nature. The space seemed a perfect fit for water education, and The Water Saving Garden has become a useful educational tool for the school and family groups who visit the centre.

DESIGN AND BUILD WINNER

MOUNTFIELD HOUSE | TOM HOWARD GARDEN DESIGN & LANDSCAPING LTD

Following extensive interior renovations and an extension, the client turned their attention to transforming their generously sized garden for their young family. With three sons who are avid football fans, they wanted an area dedicated to active play that wouldn’t dominate the overall design. So, an AstroTurf area was placed entirely out of sight whilst being easily accessible from the back door. The wider garden has a beautiful flow, and when viewed from the pergola, the mature trees and generous lawn offer a real sense of space, calm, and openness. Tom Howard Garden Design & Landscape carefully chose a mix of trees, perennials, shrubs, and pollinator-friendly species to bring seasonal interest and biodiversity to the space to create a garden the company is immensely proud of.

STONEHILL | FORMOSA LANDSCAPES

The client wanted the design of her garden to evoke the warmth and charm of her homeland, Malta, and so was looking for spaces reminiscent of Mediterranean gardens, blending timeless aesthetics with functionality. Clear zones focused on privacy and entertaining spaces needed to be created, with an outdoor kitchen, dining space and outdoor fireplace all key features to be included. The back garden was to feel intimate, whilst the front garden was to be more inviting. The finished back garden is a wonderful Mediterranean-inspired space that feels intimate, characterful, and deeply connected to its surroundings, with a stone wall inspired by the Villa Frere Gardens in Pietá. The front garden continues the Mediterranean theme but with a more contemporary feel. “A great choice of materials and plant combinations – transports you to Malta with ease,” said judges.
