It took millions of years for the forces of sand and sun, tides, wind and rain to create the perfect backdrop for your beach wedding. Whether you plan it yourself, or work with a consultant, you’ll be wise to consider these 21 tips for your day in the sun.

Scope Out the Site 1. Avoid weekends if you’re marrying at a public beach.

Scout local policies on beach events and get a permit, if necessary.

2. Select the time of day after researching everything

from tides to temperatures to wind and setting sun.

3. Go lightly on decoration—your beach is already one

of the most gorgeous places on earth. Simple chairs, and maybe an arbor, are all you need.

4. Ensure adequate signage leading to the site. Consider

shuttle service if the beach has limited parking.

5. Designate a station where guests can leave their

shoes. Supply a bench, rubber sandals, bucket of water and towels to wipe off the sand when it’s over.

6. Provide liquid refreshments from a

cooler, table or stand before the ceremony.

7. Research bathrooms beforehand, and if

necessary, rent the nicest portable lavatory
