WHAT’S IN YOUR JAR? Mason jars are a favorite among brides, and for good reason. They are inexpensive, functional and can add to your wedding day decor in countless ways. How about using clear mason jars as votive lanterns placed on tables or strung in trees around the reception area, or turn these jars into small vases holding handpicked flowers from your destination. Create favors by filling mason jars with jam, candies or chocolate, or serve drinks or dessert out of them (for a cute touch, attached a ribbon and a spoon). Another fun idea: add striped straws and name tags to guide guests to their tables. –IG

CRAZY ABOUT CUPCAKES Cupcakes remain a favorite at weddings, so much so that businesses are taking their gourmet goods on the road. In Beverly Hills, Sprinkles (sprinkles.com) just launched a shop on wheels, called the Sprinkles Mobile. Further north in San Francisco, Kara’s Cupcakes (karascupcakes.com) rolls out its KaraVan for special events. On the EastCoast, the Cupcake Stop truck (cupcakestop.com) has quickly become a New York City institution. (Top this: leftovers are donated to City Harvest to feed the less fortunate.) In Washington, D.C., Curbside Cupcakes (curbsidecupcakes. com) brings yummy cupcakes to your curb, literally, while Canadian wedding couples can call Cupcake Diner (cupcakediner.ca) to cater their big day. –IG

Priceless tips for a destination wedding that won’t break the bank. By Annette Burden

planning guide tips & tools

1

Start with a plan. Determine what portions of your budget to allocate toward the location, clothing, invitations, reception,

photography, music and guest activities. Now, rather than spreading yourselves thin in every category, go wild on one or two key details, whether welcome baskets or a band that knocks your socks off.

2

Pare down the guest list. Every extra person boosts costs across the board, so make sure each guest is an absolute must. On the

other hand, most destination weddings have a built-in filter. Even if you ask the whole B list, how many can spare time off work and the cost of travel and lodging?

3

Search for bargain spots. You’ll likely see considerable savings if you veer slightly off the beaten path—the operative word here

being slightly. Locations with busy airports nearby can save a bundle in airfare. And remember—peak season comes with peak prices, so aim for shoulder or off-season.

4

Skip the weekend. Weekdays mean a better deal on the venue, vendors and even travel costs. Instead of telling the hotel you want

to marry on such-and-such a date, say you’re thinking of a particular month or season—what days can they give you to save money?

5

Stay open-minded. The stricter your requirements, the less chance you have to find a deal. Flexibility leaves you free to grab

a bargain when you see it—and guarantees a one-of-a-kind event.

6

Utilize the setting. A beach wedding needs little or no embellishment. The same goes for a garden wedding or any place with a

backdrop you traveled hundreds of miles to see. Similarly, save money by opting for local produce, seafood, flowers or wine. Instead of imported decor, think shells, palm fronds or even local fruit for centerpieces.

7

Enlist friends and family. Most guests consider it an honor to lend a hand. Maybe your Internet-ordained cousin would officiate, your

baby brother would man the iPod, and your best friend would do your hair and makeup?

8

Claim your discount. Ask everyone from the airline to the resort for a better price—for you and your guests. Then, wherever you go,

mention the wedding. You may well score an upgraded suite, breakfast

in bed, a couples massage or dinner on the house.

9

Think outside the box. Use more greenery than flowers. Save on tablecloths and centerpieces with larger reception tables. Serve

beer, wine and a signature cocktail rather than hosting a full bar. Order a gorgeous wedding cake—but only big enough for half servings. Who isn’t already stuffed by the dessert course, anyway?

10

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember the number one mantra for destination wedding success: You don’t need a

fortune to have fun.

Hawaii

bride’s planning guide local flavor

There’s something innately exotic about Hawaii. Stunning topography, eclectic regional fare and fascinating traditions passed down through generations make the islands a sought-after location to tie the knot. You’ll be enveloped by the beautiful spirit of aloha from the moment you arrive.

DISTINCT DESIGN Possibilities for decoration are endless. Tropical

flowers and greenery, colorful fruits, tiki torches, kahili bearers, bamboo arches and canopies are some of the must-have accents for island brides. Beautiful gardens and lush foliage serve as a natural backdrop for most ceremonies and are easily enhanced by tropical flowers, from stunning hibiscus (the state flower) and fragrant frangipani to cream-colored tuberose blossoms, white pikake and exotic orchids.

CULINARY CREATIONS For the grand dinner, you can opt for

a traditional Hawaiian luau feast, complete with a pig roast and poi—a traditional island dish made by cooking taro root in an underground oven. Or serve a locally caught fish like mahi-mahi or Pacific blue marlin, which pairs perfectly with a fruit rum cocktail. Pupu platters filled with island-style hors d’oeuvres like fried shrimp, dumplings and skewered beef make tasty appetizers. DREAMY DESSERTS After dinner, treat guests to such regional

sweets as haupia (coconut pudding), moshi, coconut frosted icecream, chocolate-dipped pineapple chunks, lilikoi sorbet, Big Island chocolates or macadamia nut treats. SIGNATURE SIPS For cocktail hours and receptions, mai tais rank

among the favorite libations along with blue Hawaii, lava flow and pineapple iced tea. Or ask your resort to create a signature drink that matches the color scheme of the event, and name the cocktail after the bride and groom or the location. ROMANTIC RITUALS A Hawaiian ceremony begins with the blowing

of the pu, or conch shell, by an island minister. Leis are exchanged between the bride and groom as a symbol of embracing one another in love and an expression of great honor. Other cultural customs that entertain are torch maidens, hula dancing and canoe processionals. TERRIFIC TUNES Hawaiian music offers a range of traditional and

drums to luau shows with hula and fire knife performers. FABULOUS FAVORS Think chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, white

chocolate sea shells, fragrant plumeria-scented floating candles or individually designed, island-themed confections. Make gifts extra exceptional with custom-designed, edible thank you tags representing Hawaii’s native wonders. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CORBIN GORKIN

Mexico

bride’s planning guide local flavor

Mexico takes pride in a heritage steeped in warmth, zest and color. Beyond the captivating traditions, tasty food and passionate music, you’ll find no shortage of bridal venues to choose from, including beautiful haciendas, tropical gardens, historic ruins and white-sand beaches—anything you need for a fabulous fiesta south of the border. DISTINCT DESIGN Fresh local flowers, ribbons and tropical foliage

create a wonderful backdrop for a wedding. Starfish and sea shells in various shapes are great for adorning beach ceremonies and receptions, and for a formal party, white linen or yute tablecloths create a classic look along with handmade talavera pottery to accompany the place settings. Accents like colorful lace, paper banners and drinking glasses with blue rims add local flair, as do Mexican blue glass, parrots, sombreros and small piñatas, which can also be turned into beautiful lanterns.

CULINARY CREATIONS Kick off the welcome party with a tequila

tasting at your resort or a local cantina, pairing drinks with ceviche and tacos. For the reception, create a buffet of such local staples as rice, beans, tortillas, quesadillas, mole, seafood fajitas and pambazos (savory sandwiches). DREAMY DESSERTS Mexican wedding cakes are often rum-soaked

fruitcakes filled with bits of pineapple, pecans and coconut. Decorate the cake with a miniature mariachi cake topper, or place a white lasso or string of rosary beads around a bride-and-groom cake topper. ROMANTIC RITUALS Popular in many Mexican ceremonies is the

tradition of the lasso (lazo). Symbolizing unity, the lasso, or a large loop of rosary beads, is placed in a figure-eight shape around the bride’s and groom’s necks following the vows. Another rite is that of the 13 gold coins (trece monedas de oro), which the groom presents to his bride as a pledge of marriage. A Mayan wedding is a spiritual and interactive ceremony led by a shaman. It pays tribute to nature, the four basic elements (Fire, Earth, Water and Air) and the Universe. Guests traditionally wear white to represent a pure integration with Mother Earth. TERRIFIC TUNES In Mexico, most processionals feature the organ,

but you can always replace organ music with mariachi or have mariachis play the recessional at the end of the reception. During the party, play Spanish-style music, such as salsa and meringue, flamenco guitar, a guitar trio or marimba. FABULOUS FAVORS Look for unique gifts in the straw market—pot-

tery, hemp beach bags, handmade scarves or typical snacks and drinks—or choose favors with flavor, like Mexican wedding cookies, hot sauce, tequila, coffee beans or cocoa. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEC & T.

The Caribbean bride’s planning guide local flavor

Bridal couples choose the Caribbean as much for its paradisiacal

beaches and balmy temperatures as its colorful culture and warmhearted locals. Each tropical isle has something unique to offer, from time-honored culinary customs and bridal rituals to distinctly dazzling wedding venues. Say “I do” barefoot in the sand, by a towering

waterfall or on a historic plantation, or try tradition with a twist and throw a Caribbean church wedding.

DISTINCT DESIGN Outdoor venues in the islands lend their own

natural beauty. For a beach or garden ceremony, use a bamboo canopy with a white cover and place palm fronds and conch shells along the aisle or in a circle around the altar, or put bamboo poles in the sand with long ribbons tied to the top. For the reception, pair large shells with exotic flowers like orchids, protea, frangipani or bougainvillea. Culinary items such as coffee beans, cinnamon and tropical fruits along with plantation artifacts add more local flair. CULINARY CREATIONS Each island is known for its cuisine. Curried

goat and white rice is common at French West Indies weddings, while conch is a must during Bahamian celebrations. Conch can be served alongside a tropical fruit salad or grilled with the main course. Lobster and blackened grouper also make popular entrees. In Jamaica, let guests sample a mix of regional staples by serving island appetizers like jerk beef or chicken and fried plantains paired with small sips of different rum brands. DREAMY DESSERTS Dish up the customary rum cake for a true taste

of the islands. SIGNATURE SIPS No Caribbean wedding is complete without a sweet

rum punch, but you can also choose to serve your island's own signature mix. On Aruba, for example, a sea grape wine called durif is served at special events, or opt for the Aruba Ariba, which gets its dramatic red color from coecoei, a liquor made from the sap of the agave. ROMANTIC RITUALS Island ceremonies can involve a variety of

local traditions. Often, conch shell blowers announce the arrival of the bride, who is walked down the aisle by a junkanoo group while a steel pan band plays “Here comes the bride.” It’s also common to integrate outside influences like the sand ceremony, the unity candle and the African ritual of jumping the broom, all symbolizing the joining of two families. TERRIFIC TUNES Let steel drum music set the tone for the ceremony

true island beat. FABULOUS FAVORS Choose locally inspired gifts such as straw bags,

beach towels, sea shells or small bottles of rum. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULES BIANCHI

Wine Country

bride’s planning guide local flavor

With their rolling hills, oak studded grasslands and historic vineyards, wine-producing regions create an idyllic backdrop for saying “I do.” You need little in the way of decoration, culinary offerings abound and, chances are, you can find a venue close by. The region is also blessed with beautiful weather, making outdoor events possible even in the fall. DESIGN ELEMENTS Whether you stage your celebration in a garden

framed by giant oaks and acres of grapevines, a romantically rustic barn or a castle-like cellar lined with wine barrels, your decor remains simple and inspired by the surroundings. Think local seasonal flowers with infusions of grapes and vines—grapevines can also decorate tables, bridal bouquets and wreaths. Candlelight remains a favorite accent and a sweet complement to those local blooms. Or create beautiful drip candleholders from wine bottles of different heights and color. For the overall decor, capture the surroundings with color schemes of green, burgundy, purple or champagne.

CULINARY CREATIONS Each wine region boasts its own “wine country

cuisine,” incorporating fresh, locally farmed produce, cheeses and vegetables and unique signature dishes by savvy chefs. Whether you’re serving prime rib, salmon with capers or artichoke risotto, you’ll easily find a proper pairing. SIGNATURE SIPS Wine and food pairings for appetizers and dinners

let guests savor regional flavors. Also consider selecting a couple of favorite local bottles to share with friends and family. You can even bottle your own wine and personalize the label (and cork) to carry on your event’s design theme. ROMANTIC RITUALS Incorporating wine into the ceremony adds a

fun and contemporary touch, and still gives the event a traditional feel. For example, to symbolize unity (just like the candle or sand ritual), the bride and groom share a cup of wine or drink out of separate glasses with arms interlocked. DREAMY DESSERTS A traditional cake can be draped with grapes or

centered by a beautiful twig harbor with clusters of grapes cascading down the sides. Cup cakes and dessert stations are also popular, including assortments of chocolates to pair with wine. TERRIFIC TUNES Let a classical string ensemble play during the

ceremony and cocktail hour. At the reception, groove to a fun bluegrass, folk or country band. FABULOUS FAVORS Grape jam, a bottle of wine, wine stoppers, seeds

and seedlings….the list of locally inspired gifts abound. Get creative and put together a personalized picnic bag big enough to hold a bottle of wine, opener and two glasses. Maybe add cheese and crackers to the mix, along with a map of the wine region. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CORBIN GORKIN
