Winter Fuel Support
With the recent change to Winter Fuel Payments many older people will struggle this winter to heat their homes.
Previously, all pensioners were eligible for Winter Fuel Payments, but now only people on Pension Credit or certain other benefits will continue to receive the payment.
An estimated 880,000 low-income pensioner households eligible for Pension Credit currently fail to claim it. Over 5,000 of these households are in North Devon.
People who are eligible for Pension Credit receive an average of £3,900 a year and the Winter Fuel Payments of between £200 and £300 depending on personal circumstances.
If you are aged 66 or older, you live alone, you have no or low savings and you have a weekly income below £218.15 you are entitled to Pension Credit. If you are a couple (both aged 66+) the weekly income threshold to receive Pension Credit is below £332.95. If you receive Pension Credit you may also be entitled to help with housing costs and council tax.
If you would like some help to claim Pension Credit Age Concern Barnstaple and North Devon has a dedicated Help Desk open Monday to Friday 9.30am-1.30pm. The telephone number is 01271 445131.
If you would like face-to-face support you can make an appointment and come to one of our Benefits Clinics which are held in Barnstaple, South Molton and Ilfracombe.

As we now enter October, this month brings two things, even darker evenings and Halloween night on the 31st .
With the hour changing later this month it will start to get darker a lot earlier. Please check yours and your children’s bicycles for working lights. Too many cyclists are putting themselves in danger riding around without lights. It is an offence not to have working lights on your bikes while cycling during the hours of darkness Please don’t let yourself or your child become another road traffic statistic.
Halloween night or as its now commonly known as Trick or Treat is becoming more popular every year with large numbers taking part in Braunton. Most young children are escorted by an adult to keep them safe but as your children get older the pressure to let them go out on their own with friend’s increases. Please consider these safety tips to pass on to them to help keep them safe.
• Older children should let you know where they are going and when they will be back.
• If possible, make sure they carry a mobile phone.
• Remind your children not to enter anyone’s house.
• Make sure they can be seen and stay in well lit areas and on pavements at all times.
• Carry a torch and always consider road safety.
• Be sensible when out in a group with other teenagers. Respect homeowners who do not want to answer their door or where the No Trick or Treat sign is displayed. Warn them of the dangers they can get themselves into regarding the ‘trick’ part. Do not throw items such as eggs or flour at people houses. Tricks can go wrong, people could become aggressive, and it could end with your child being involved in a situation they can’t deal with.
The Braunton Neighbourhood Team will be patrolling the area to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves and don't act in an anti-social manner. For those taking part, Halloween is meant to be fun. Please remember this so the evening can be enjoyed by all. Thank You.
I will assure you of a quick response and a reasonably priced service! Call Alan on: 01271 268513/07977 507433 or email: info@cornerwayselectrical.co.uk
Over 50 years ago a group of ladies in Braunton decided to form a Handbell Ringing Team (Braunton Ladies Handbell Ringers). During this time they raised thousands of pounds for the local community and various charities through performances, coffee mornings and other events.
Due to advancing years, health issues and difficulties in recruiting new players the team made the decision to disband and sell the handbells.
The proceeds of the sale of the handbells was shared equally among the following good causes:
Over and Above
Brauntons’ Mens Shed
Devon Air Ambulance
Braunton Museum
Caen Medical Centre
Braunton Countryside Centre
Devon Blood Bikes
SCBU at North Devon District Hospital
The monies left in the teams account was donated to Braunton Library.
The ladies would like to say thank you to everyone who supported them over the years.

Meet Oscar: The Energetic Halden Hound Looking for His Forever Home
Oscar, a handsome one-yearold Halden Hound, is searching for a loving home with adopters who can match his active lifestyle. With his zest for life and endless curiosity, Oscar is ready to bring energy, love, and loyalty to the right family.
This adventurous hound would be perfect for adult adopters who enjoy long hikes, runs, and exploring the great outdoors. He is more than happy to walk for two hours or more a day, making him the ideal companion for anyone who enjoys being on the move. Oscar would also enjoy a family who offer him enrichment such as training and scent games.
Despite his love for adventure, Oscar is a wellmannered dog at home. He’s housetrained and travels well in the car, making trips easy and stress-free. He gets along wonderfully with other dogs, enjoying a good play session and benefiting from social interactions with doggy friends. While he could share his home with other dogs, he’s best suited to a cat-free environment without small furries or livestock. Oscar is happiest when outdoors, sniffing and exploring, but he would prefer a quieter home where he can settle into a routine.
Oscar enjoys a good game of tug, understands basic commands (sit, paw, down, focus), and has an appetite for treats. He has been known to counter-surf in the kitchen, which means his new family will have to keep things tidy and out of his reach. Occasionally, he may steal and guard new items in the home, but the rehoming team is happy to guide new owners on how to manage this behaviour.
Elise Watson, Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe says ““Oscar is such a sweet boy who is playful, clever, and full of energy. He’ll make a fantastic companion for someone who enjoys the outdoors as much as he does. He’s instantly friendly with everyone he meets, loves a fuss and a snuggle, and will make a fun, loving addition to any household. We can’t wait to find Oscar the perfect home.”
If you think you can offer Oscar an active and adventure -filled life outside of kennels, please visit www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/haldenhound/1269185 for more information.

CAT OF THE MONTH - Fifi
Say Hello to Fifi. This beautiful little girl doesn't seem to have realised that she's 11 years old and is very often as playful as any kitten. She generally loves company, although has been known to respond to rough play which makes her unsuitable for a household with young children. She likes to do her own thing too, so will need access to the great outdoors to be truly happy.
In our opinion she would flourish best in a household with adults and older children only, preferably experienced cat people, and with no other pets. Given that, she'll make a great addition to the right family.
Fifi has had the works at the vet and is vaccinated, microchipped, neutered and has had blood tests suited for her age. After passing her MOT with flying colours could you give dear Fifi the loving home she now needs?
