Braunton Museum was first established in Church Street in a building originally known as The Shambles. It was designated to be a home for relics and memorabilia of Braunton.
It was formally opened by the late Mrs Angela Incledon Webber on 6th July 1974 together with members of the Parish Council and benefactors of the museum, particularly Lt Cmdr Gammon. It was managed by a Curator the first being Mary Swailes and an admission fee was charged. The lease at that time was for 28 years.
The museum flourished for many years and built up an exceptional collection of items relating to the everyday life of Braunton residents covering agriculture and farming, maritime, military and domestic.
After some time it became evident that the premises were no longer big enough to house any more donations, so, in 1993 the search for somewhere larger was paramount. Two cottages and a bakery were made available at the entrance to what is now, Caen Street Car Park and the first architects plans were drawn up in 1995. These were accepted and alterations to the site were started, which took two years to complete.
Funding was made available by Braunton Parish Council, The Heritage Lottery, The Rural Development Commission, The EU, The Rotary Club and North Devon District Council as well as a number of local benefactors.
The new building was named The Bakehouse Centre and was opened in July 1999.
We shared some of the ground floor space with the TIC - Tourist Information Centre and ran side by side for many years. However the TIC eventually closed down and the museum took on the element of information which still operates in this way today.
The museum is run by Trustees and a Management Committee, a Treasurer and part time Administrator, but principally by a wonderful team of volunteers, who give up much of their time to be there to help and advise visitors to wonderful North Devon.
We have a research team who are willing to do research into your family, home, business or property. They are in situ on Wednesday morning from 10 -1 pm.
A large range of books, many by local authors, are available in the shop, these include books about Croyde and Georgeham as well as Braunton, also the Cradle to Grave series listing entries into the N D Journal from 1841.
One of our major attractions is the model railway situated in the upper area of the museum, this has been built to scale and depicts the station as it used to be before closure in 1975, its loss was very detrimental to several businesses in Braunton.
Our new display is an exhibition of Caen Street, depicting the shops and displaying items they would sell or make. So many changes over the years!
The gift area has a range of items at reasonable prices which you may not find anywhere else.
There has been Free Admission for many years, we are delighted to see families, school groups or any other organisations. Arrangements can be made for after hours visits if required.
To mark the Golden Anniversary of the museum we are holding a draw, with a first prize of £100 and many other prizes. Tickets are available at £1 each, so please come in and support this venture and help us to keep a vibrant museum in Braunton.

Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even on a mildly warm day. Dogs can die when left unattended in a vehicle, even when it is in the shade, a window is open and there is water available. The British weather can switch very suddenly so even on cloudy days leaving a dog in a car or other vehicle can prove fatal. Every year the Kennel Club hears reports of dogs being cooked alive after being left in vehicles in hot weather, a situation which can so easily be avoided. For those travelling with their dogs during the summer months, the Kennel Club has Advice on their website. www.thekennelclub.org.uk
Never
1.Leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even with the window open and water available. Take them out and leave them in a secure, cool place with access to shade and water or take them with you, there are plenty of places that are part of the Kennel Club's Be Dog Friendly campaign and will allow dogs in.
2.Let your dog take part in unnecessary exertion in hot weather or stand in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time.
3.Pass by a dog if you see one suffering in a car or other vehicle. Whether it be in a supermarket car park or at a show, make sure you let someone in authority know and if in doubt call the police on emergency number 999.
What to do if your dog overheats
:
1.Contact the vet immediately.
2.Move the dog out of the heat.
3.Offer the dog cool, rather than cold, water for small drinks if the dog is still conscious.
4.If possible, fan the dog with cool air.
5.Wrap in cool, damp towels or spray with cool, not cold, water. Pay particular attention to the head.
6.Cool the dog's tongue by dabbing with a cold, damp cloth.

On The Road Music Fest is a small (although we prefer to call it boutique), family-friendly festival designed with Braunton’s local community at its heart. It started in 2017 and after a break last year, it’s back for 2024.
Held at Broadland’s farm on the edge of the Great Field, OTR is within walking distance of the village, making it ideal for those who want the festival atmosphere without the added hassle of camping. However, if you want to have the full camping experience then there are plenty of campsites surrounding the festival site!
The main stage at OTR this year will see some local favourites, such as Sam Green, Five Man Down, and Roy and Andy, as well as visiting acts, such as Samuel Ashton, Alberta Cross and Ann Lui. Headlining on the Friday night is DJ Martin Badder, who On The Roaders will know from his awesome set in our dance tent a few years ago and from his appearance in The Swingers band who headlined the Friday night in 2017. Supporting Martin Badder are the much-loved reggae band Revelation Roots. Saturday night headliners are the unknown (or are they?) Raging Sea. Mmm..... Speculation abounds as to who they could be.... if you know, you know! Supporting Raging Sea are Alberta Cross, who have most recently been supporting Band of Skulls and who are achieving great accolades in the music industry. Sunday night headliners are Loungeroom Lizard, another “surprise” act put together especially for you On The Roaders. Trust us, you’re going to love them. As well as these headline and supporting acts are a range of local and other artists, including Candar, Renie C, Tild, Luke McAuley and The Headaches. Kicking off proceedings on Sunday are the Saunton Road Community Choir, so as you can see, there really is something for everyone.
And that’s just the main stage. Over on the second stage, the Pill Gardens Stage, will be Ska Ship Enterprise, Holocene and some great grooves from your favourite DJ Sexy Toast! As if that were not enough, the Pill Gardens Stage will be hosting some awesome emerging talent from the local area, as well as young rocker sessions, kids’ open mic slots, family raves and local dance groups.
If you’ve been before, you’ll know that it’s not just the kids who can get up and perform. On The Road boasts a dedicated Open Mic stage for all attendees.
If dancing is your thing, and you just want to dance all weekend, then in between dance slots on the main stage and Pill Gardens Stage, you can dance the days and nights away to disco tunes in our miniature disco cabin, Studio 24.
So, the music is well taken care of. Elsewhere on the festival site you will find even more free activities for the children: an amazing skate area sponsored by Braunton’s Patinar Skate, a craft and lego tent and, for a small charge, face painting and hair braiding and more!
Add in some mouthwatering food and drink and some local craft stalls and you have the perfect boutique, family-friendly local festival. Well, that’s what we think anyway! What better way to reunite with friends at the end of the summer break, giving yourself a pat on the back for surviving what we hope will be a busy summer season for us all.
On The Road is a small, non-commercial festival run by local music lovers for local music lovers. There are no big corporations financing things. As such, we rely on support from you – our locals – and you can show your support by buying your ticket for the festival sooner rather than later. Tickets are available from Saunton Road Studios, Second Skin and Patinar Skate in Braunton or online from www.ontheroadmusicfest.co.uk.
