BARBADOS MAP
FACTS ABOUT BARBADOS
Barbados originally supported a considerable population of Arawak Indians, but invading Caribs decimated that population. By the time the British landed, near the site of present-day Holetown in 1625, the island was uninhabited. Almost 2,000 English settlers landed in 1627-28. Soon afterward, the island developed a sugar-based economy, supported by an enslaved population of African descent. Slavery was abolished in 1834, and the last enslaved person was freed in 1838. The first settlement in Barbados, Holetown, was originally named Jamestown, after its benefactor, King James I of England. It acquired the name “Holetown” due to the offloading and cleaning of ships in the very small channel located within the immediate vicinity of the town. These tasks left the area in an untidy and smelly condition...thus the Jamestown area became referred to as “the Hole”, which evolved into “Holetown”, as it is known today. This channel is no longer in use for such purposes.
• The name Barbados was originally Los Barbados, Portuguese for “the bearded ones”, from the many fig trees and their hanging, aerial roots, looking like beards from a distance.
• South Carolina, in the USA, was originally settled by Barbadians, and its first Governor was a Barbadian.
• The Capital city, Bridgetown, was originally named “Indian Bridge” after the bridge which has been constructed over the river (now known as the Careenage) by the Native Indians. It was later called the “town of St. Michael” in official documents, before finally being named Bridgetown when a new bridge was built in place of the Indian Bridge, sometime after 1654.
• In 1751 a young George Washington came here on his only trip abroad. He brought his ailing half-brother to the island in search of a miracle tropical cure.
• The island gained its Independence on November 30, 1966, from England. The Father of Independence is the late Right Honorable Errol Walton Barrow, a National Hero.
• Barbados is 21 miles long and 14 miles wide. English is the official language.

CROP OVER FESTIVAL
Island-wide events
July until the 1st Week of August
Crop Over is Barbados’ biggest and best-loved festival, which sees the whole island taken over by the party spirit. Dating back to the 1780s, when the island was one of the biggest sugar producers in the world, the end of the sugar cane harvest was always celebrated with a big party, and the tradition continues today with added extravagance and flamboyance. The festival launches with the ceremonial delivery of the last sugar canes of the harvest and culminates with the crowning of the King and Queen of the Crop. The Festival lasts five weeks and revellers can expect a heavy mix of live soca and calypso music, dancing, arts and crafts markets, invigorating parties, cultural presentations, costumed road march soca bands and calypso tents.
For more info, please visit: https://barbados.org/cropover.htm
HOLETOWN FESTIVAL

The week-long festival begins in mid-February with the opening celebrations taking place at then. The festival highlights local arts and crafts as well as Barbadian culture and history, and events typically include historical lectures, fashion show, a beau ty contest, a street parade with a tuk band, a tattoo show, exhibitions, concerts, theatrical presentations, sporting events, and antique car parade.
KADOOMENT DAY
First Monday in August
The grand finale to the Crop Over Festival is Kadooment, a public holiday, and a summer street carnival where you can watch featured “Kadooment bands” dressed in exotic costumes, designers competing for the Designer of the Year Award, and revelers parading on the streets to booming soca music, as they make their way from Warrens to Spring Garden Highway.

PLEASE READ
For your safety and security, please take the following precautions:
• Keep money, credit cards, passport, tickets and similar valuables in the safe provided in your room. When leaving your room and before going to bed, remember to secure your doors and windows. When you are out and about, don’t leave tempting articles such as handbags, cell phones, jewelry, or cameras unattended at the beach.
• Local watersports beach vendors are independent operators and should carry Government licenses.
• Report any lost articles or incidents while on the property to our Guest Service Staff or Security Staff. All off property incidents should be reported to the police immediately.
• Never open your room door to strangers. If you do not recognize someone at the door and have not called for service, please feel free to dial “0” to verify that it is a staff member at your door.
• Please be cautious when opening and closing the patio sliding doors in your room.
• Hot water from the bathroom sink, shower, and tub may be VERY HOT! In tropical environments, the water is stored at high temperatures to help ensure water quality. Be sure to test the water coming out of the tap to make sure the water temperature is comfortable and safe for you.
• PREVENT SLIP AND FALL INJURIES! Please use caution when entering or exiting tubs and showers. Use the bath mat to prevent slipping on wet tile floors. Use caution while walking around the resort, especially if the grounds, walkways, or stairs are wet due to rain, sprinklers, or mopping. Please watch your step at all times.
• Please note there are no lifeguards on duty at the pool or on the beach.
• Use common sense when exploring the island. Never wander off the resort property with strangers. Do not hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers. Drive on the left hand side of the road only, and be cautious at roundabouts.

HOTEL FIRE SAFETY
PRE-PLAN YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE
When you get to your room, take a few minutes to locate the escape routes, the nearest fire extinguisher, and assembly points; find the nearest and alternate exits or exit stairways.
IN CASE OF A FIRE IN YOUR ROOM
Leave your room and close all doors behind you to keep smoke and flames from escaping. Leave the building by the nearest exit. Report the fire and the location to front desk or a member of staff immediately (EXT ‘0’). DO NOT attempt to fight the fire. DO NOT place yourself at risk; ensure your personal safety first! Leave your room by any available exit. DO NOT attempt to collect your personal belongings. DO NOT attempt to re-enter your room. The Emergency/Fire Assembly Point is to the north of the property – meet by the entrance to the Tennis Courts between security and watersports. This point is indicated on the resort map and by signage at the location. Signs leading you to the Emergency Assembly Point are also located throughout the Resort.
IF YOU HEAR THE SMOKE ALARM YOU SHOULD
• Go to the door of your room. (If you are in bed and there is any evidence of smoke in the room, get out of bed and crawl to the door. Don’t stand! Smoke and deadly gases rise - to avoid smoke inhalation: use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and keep close to the floor.
• Feel the door with the palm of your hand. If the door or knob is hot, leave it shut. If the door is not hot, open it slowly, but be ready to close it immediately if necessary. Check the corridor. If you can leave safely, take your room key with you, close the door behind you, go to the nearest exit, and then head to the designated emergency assembly point.
• If the nearest exit or stairway is blocked by smoke or fire, use the alternate one if clear. (If it is blocked by smoke or fire, return to your room, close the door, and call EXT ‘0’ to report the fire and location).
• If you can exit easily, proceed with care down to the ground level. Hold on to the handrail for stability.
WHAT TO DO IF THE ROOM DOOR IS HOT OR SMOKE IS DENSE IN THE CORRIDOR
It may be safer to stay in your room. Here are some of the things you should do:
• Let someone know you are in the room and cannot escape. If the phone works, call EXT ‘0’.
• If your window can be opened, hang a bed sheet out of the window to signal to the fire department, but close the window against smoke as necessary.
• Wet towels and sheets – put these around doors and cracks if smoke starts to seep in. Use the ice bucket or waste bin to keep towels and door wet as necessary.
Most people die in fires from smoke inhalation. If you have an evacuation plan which can be adapted to the emergency, you will be better prepared to cope with the situation.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT HOTEL FIRES
Many hotel fires are caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials and smoking in bed. Please be reminded that smoking is not allowed in rooms. Do not use electrical appliances for purposes other than their stipulated use.
The management of this hotel, working in conjunction with the fire department, has made a concerted effort to ensure your stay is fire-safe. If you have any questions or concerns about fire safety, contact hotel management to discuss.
