Dr. Shawn Davis is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon in St. George. He opened his practice the Oral & Facial Surgery Institute in 2008. He grew up in Idaho and northern Utah, but has called St. George home for 15 years. He lives in St. George with his wife and their three children. Dr. Shawn Davis started his education at Brigham Young University where he earned his Bachelor of Science. Dr. Shawn Davis completed his Doctorate of Dental Surgery and was accepted into the University of Oklahoma’s prestigious program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During his final year at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Davis served as Chief Resident in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Davis maintains membership in multiple scholarly organizations including: American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association, Utah Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Society of Dental Anesthesiologists. In addition, Dr. Davis is the team surgeon for facial trauma in the sports medicine department at Utah Tech University.

BEST OF SOUTHERN UTAH WINNER DESERT SANDS KETAMINE OFFERS HOPE, HEALING FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH MOOD DISORDERS

Tuesday, Oct. 22. That was the day Kari decided she was going to die. She marked a red “X” on her calendar and made preparations to end her own life. After struggling with depression and anxiety for years, she couldn’t take it anymore. Pills, therapy, treatments – nothing worked.

Unexpectedly, she ran into an old coworker that same day. As they visited, he asked her if she was depressed. He told her of his own battle with depression and how he too had been suicidal at one point, but that ketamine infusions had changed everything.

Kari reached out to Desert Sands Ketamine Treatment Center and told the clinic’s founder, Dr. Eric Evans, her story, and he asked her to come in to begin ketamine infusions immediately. The following is just part of a letter she wrote during treatment:

“Patients are finding us and getting help,” he said. “We’ve had a tremendous amount of success.”

Currently Evans routinely administers ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, in the operating room and has since the beginning of his 27-year career as a board-certified anesthesiologist. Research has shown that ketamine, when administered in low doses via IV infusions, is amazingly effective at stabilizing mood imbalances in a variety of ways.

Ketamine’s main target is the glutamate system, but it also boosts a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor within the amygdala, a part of the brain that processes moods and emotions.

It increases the connections between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain involved in processing conscious thought.

“This allows our consciousness to be a better gatekeeper of our emotions, rather than having our emotions drive our consciousness,” Evans said. “Ketamine also increases the neuroplasticity of the brain, which helps determine how much resilience and adaptability a person has to cope with life’s inevitable mental trauma and stress.” Ketamine is approximately 70% effective in treating depression, a significantly higher success rate than antidepressants and traditional talk therapy. Offering lasting results, a relatively safe side effect profile and few conflicts with other medications, Evans said it’s nothing short of a “wonder drug” for treatment-resistant depression and other mood disorders.

Much like any other medical treatment, patients shouldn’t trust just any ketamine provider with their therapy. “That’s a good time for us to get to know them better and see if there’s other tools we can add to their toolbox,” Evans said.

ENERGIZING LIFE FOR OVER 75 YEARS: MEET DIXIE POWER, SOUTHERN UTAH’S HOMETOWN UTILITY COOPERATIVE

More than just a utility company, Dixie Power is a memberowned cooperative that takes pride in providing its members with the safest, most reliable and most affordable electricity in Southern Utah.

As the area’s only utility cooperative, Dixie Power is in tune with the community’s needs. The company answers directly to its members through a board of directors.

“The cooperative business model ensures our success,” president and CEO LaDel Laub said. “It gives us the drive to cater to our members and focus on what’s best for them.”

Dixie Power’s rich history of providing member owners with safe, reliable and affordable electricity began in 1946, when members of the community organized the Dixie Rural Electric Association to serve farming areas of Washington County that didn’t yet have access to existing utilities. The cooperative continued to operate independently for the next 25 years.

Dixie Power was an early supporter of the Glen Canyon Dam and hydroelectric power plant, knowing the electricity generated would be a boon to the growing Southwest. Despite having only 45 customers when the plant opened in 1966, the cooperative secured a share of 8 megawatts to allow for future expansion.

Under the leadership of R. Leon Bowler, the cooperative had grown to roughly 10,000 members by 1978. Mergers with nearby utility providers expanded its service area to include the rural communities of Newcastle, Beryl, Modena, Pine Valley, Littlefield and Beaver Dam, among others.

As the years went by, Bowler resisted numerous invitations to sell the cooperative to privatized investor-owned utilities, standing firm in his belief that this course of action would ultimately prove to be the most beneficial for its members.

Dixie Power eventually joined forces with five other cooperatives to secure additional electricity and regulate transmission costs, thereby keeping rates affordable for its members. This agreement culminated in the formation of the Deseret Generation and Transmission Cooperative.

Bowler continued to successfully steer the cooperative through decades of economic and political shifts, building it into a multimillion-dollar utility provider. He retired in 2008 after 55 years of dedicated service.

Today, Dixie Power serves over 25,000 members in communities as far north as Flowell, Utah, and as far south as Scenic, Arizona. The cooperative maintains a 99.99% reliability score, the gold standard for electric utilities.

“You don’t have to worry about power disruptions,” communications specialist Steven Young said. “We’ve got you!”

Dixie Power, by way of Deseret Power, generates electricity through a variety of sources, including coal-fired units in northeastern Utah, a community solar field in the Escalante Valley and the Quail Creek hydroelectric plant in Washington County. As Southern Utah’s population boom continues with seemingly no end in sight, the cooperative is responding to increasing demand while planning for the future.

In 2022, Deseret Power opened a 15-megawatt natural gas plant in St. George’s Fort Pierce Industrial Park to help keep customers connected during peak usage times. Additional power sources will include a 15-megawatt solar field near Vernal, which started production in 2023, and a 50-megawatt natural gas plant planned for the same area.

“More people want to move here, and our goal is to make that happen,” Young said. “We’re not afraid of growth.”

Dixie Power is vertically integrated, which means it doesn’t deal with a middleman in the process of bringing electricity to its customers. The company has an ownership stake in everything from the mining and transportation of coal to the power lines running to homes and businesses throughout Southern Utah. As such, members enjoy some of the lowest electricity rates in the nation.

As a member-owned cooperative, Dixie Power believes in giving back to the communities it serves. The Dixie Power Kite Festival, established in 2000 to benefit Washington County students, has raised over $750,000 for literacy programs. More than $350,000 has been raised for local charities via Operation Round-Up, an initiative that encourages customers to donate spare change by rounding up their monthly electric bill to the nearest dollar.

The cooperative is also a not-for-profit organization that returns any excess revenue collected after all expenses are paid. Over the past five years, Dixie Power has refunded more than $5 million to its members.

“Dixie Power has the best rates in town, but that’s not the end of the story,” Young said. “You own us, and we’re proud to serve you.

Copper Rock opened to the public in early 2020. Nestled in the Hurricane Valley, the adventurous par-72 layout forges through desert dunes dotted with native sagebrush against a backdrop of rustic sandstone formations. Players are treated to sweeping vistas of the grandeur offered by the Pine Valley Mountains and Zion National Park on every hole.

Although the surrounding scenery is unmistakably Southern Utah, the links of Copper Rock feature trees and wild grasses that create a mountainous feel, perhaps more like a course in Park City. Each of the superiorly designed holes contours to the natural shape of the terrain.

The course is the centerpiece of a master-planned development transforming acres of empty desert into a luxurious resort community. Copper Rock’s builders anticipate hundreds of custom homes surrounding the links, along with a hotel. The final plan

features 2,200 housing units, and the entire community is approved for nightly rentals.

Copper Rock was designed by a team organized under Gordon Zitting. The Zitting family has spent decades in the Hurricane Valley working to bring this project to fruition, and it shows. Cultivating a great visitor experience is at the forefront of their development strategy.

Copper Rock’s owners and management team, all of whom live in Southern Utah, are committed to helping elevate the local golf culture as the community continues to grow.

“We’re very personally invested in the area,” Timpson said. Every April, local golf fans have the opportunity to watch rising stars of the women’s professional tour compete for their share of a $220,000 purse during the Copper Rock Championship. It’s a sanctioned event on the Epson Tour, the official qualifying tour of the LPGA.

Featuring 54 holes of thrilling competition over three days, the tournament welcomes more than 100 professional golfers from around the world each year. Many players who appeared at the Copper Rock Championship can now be found among the ranks of the LPGA. Copper Rock has signed a contract with the Epson Tour to continue hosting the event through 2028, which includes a commitment to annual purse increases.

Although Southern Utah is heavily promoted as a golf destination, the inaugural Copper Rock Championship three years ago was the first women’s professional tournament ever held in the area. The event allows fans to get close to the action through affordable grounds access passes as well as volunteer opportunities.

“Our volunteers continue to amaze us every year,” golf pro John Horton said. “We had over 450 volunteers this year, and we’re so grateful to get such incredible support from the communities of the St. George area.”

Copper Rock welcomes golfers 365 days a year. A top-flight grounds crew keeps the links healthy and bright green throughout the chilly winter as well as the blazing summer.

Located within the clubhouse, the Copper Rock Grill is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and features a beer menu. Golf carts offer GPS functionality covering the entire course, helping players take the guesswork out of determining their distance to the pin.

“We’re looking to tie in modern technology with the centuries-old game of golf and enhance the golfer’s experience at every level,” Timpson said. “Our mission here is to provide a private golf course experience on a public course.”

And that experience continues to evolve. Earlier this year, Copper Rock’s management added eight new tee boxes and extended the course by roughly 400 yards. The updated layout, now just over 7,200 yards in length, was unveiled ahead of the Copper Rock Amateur tournament in February.

“Copper Rock is now the most difficult course in Southern Utah from a course rating standpoint,” Horton said. “It showcases a championship-style challenge for all players. Come out and test your skills.”

One recent example of this commitment is the work of Michael Branum, one of the firm’s attorneys, who resolved a case for a veteran and his daughter that had been in dispute with the Department of Veterans Affairs for nearly a decade. Even though the hearing could be held remotely via videoconferencing, the client and Branum agreed that, in this case, an in-person appearance would maximize their chances of success.

Branum didn’t think twice. Without compensation for all of his travel time, and with the sole mission of getting fair compensation for his client, he went to Phoenix, Arizona, to attend the hearing with the veteran and his daughter.

Gallian Welker’s legal team scoured decades of the client’s medical records to make the case before the VA. Ultimately, the veteran’s daughter was awarded the best possible outcome: a six-figure settlement for all the years the VA denied the claim that will provide her with monthly checks for the rest of her life to help with the disabilities she faces on a daily basis.

Branum, a veteran himself, explained that he never considered staying home and handling the hearing from his office, even though that would have been in his financial interest, because he and his client “are a team, and we’re all in, all of the time, for the team.”

Eighteen years ago, one attorney represented a baby girl born prematurely due to serious injuries her mother suffered in a horrible collision that ultimately took her life not long after the birth.

As an accomplished local businessman, Scott Nielson is dedicated to fostering Southern Utah’s entrepreneurial spirit. Along with sharing his own story of self-made success, he and his family have created a legacy of supporting education, technology and growth.

Nielson was born in Ogden, Utah, to parents that taught him the importance of hard work and loyalty from an early age. His family moved to Hurricane when he was 12, and he has spent most of his life in the area.

“I’m proud to be local,” he said. “Even though I’ve sold products all over the world, everything that I’ve done has started out right here in Southern Utah.”

After graduating from Hurricane High School, Nielson served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in

Arcadia, California, where he found himself surrounded by business and industry. For a young man coming from a relatively small town, it was exciting. His interest in business only developed further while taking an accounting class at Dixie College.

Nielson made his first foray into entrepreneurship in 1997. At age 21, he borrowed $6,500 from his grandfather and returned to California to buy two cars at auction, which he transported back to Southern Utah and subsequently sold for a profit. He then struck a deal with a used car lot in Hurricane to buy and sell vehicles under their license in exchange for a commission.

By 2001, Nielson had enough capital to establish his own dealership and opened the Hurricane Valley Auto Mall Inc. with his brother, Mike. He also started buying used RVs and quickly discovered that he found that side of the business far more interesting.

Nielson bought out his brother’s share of the company in 2004. That same year, he built a new facility on State Street in Hurricane and changed the name of the dealership to Nielson RV.

Nielson RV grew into the area’s largest RV dealership over the next decade, which gave Nielson the financial freedom to explore other business ventures. He started Nielson Development, a commercial land development company that has built over 250 projects in multiple states, and co-founded both the hunting apparel line SKRE Gear and Nielson Power Systems, an RV onboard generator company.

In 2015, Nielson RV expanded to St. George with a newly built 22,000-square-foot facility along the freeway. It was on this site that Nielson erected Southern Utah’s tallest flagpole, a 150-foot beacon of patriotism flying the stars and stripes high above the valley. He later donated the flagpole to the city of Hurricane for a planned veterans memorial park, a cause close to his heart.

In 2021, he received a call from Marcus Lemonis, CEO of Camping World, with a multimillion-dollar offer to acquire the entire Nielson RV company. After the deal was finalized, Nielson decided he was too young to retire and immediately got to work on his next project.

Nielson bought 53 acres of land near Sand Hollow State Park and partnered with Jellystone Park, the nation’s leading family-oriented camping and outdoor entertainment brand, to create an RV resort unlike any other in Utah. Like all of his past enterprises, it will be built from the ground up.

Zion Utah Jellystone Park is themed after the beloved HannaBarbera cartoons, bringing Yogi Bear’s world to life. The resort will be constructed in three phases, with the first phase opening in the summer of 2023.

Phase one consists of a water park featuring eight pools, a water tower, a lazy river and waterfalls along with 74 RV camping sites, 11 modern luxury cabins, pickleball and basketball courts and a jump pillow. The second phase will include a massive adventure center with blacklight mini golf and dozens of fun games for all ages.

“We’re not holding back,” Nielson said. “We’re doing it first-class all the way.”

Nielson is committed to promoting entrepreneurship and supporting worthy causes in Southern Utah. He and his wife, Kristin, have prioritized the values of giving back and taking pride in community while raising their seven children, who range in age from 5 to 16. Leaving a legacy of kindness is the inspiration behind the Nielson Family Foundation.

The Nielsons are longtime supporters of Utah Tech University’s Atwood Innovation Plaza, a hands-on gathering place for aspiring business owners. The plaza helps students and community members bring their ideas to life through a startup incubator, a makerspace, a business resource center, innovative workshops and more.

The Nielsons have made significant donations to the plaza since 2017. Beyond funding, however, they remain engaged by sharing ideas, offering mentorship and always seeking more ways to help.

“There are so many bright and talented individuals in Southern Utah, but some don’t always have the knowledge or funding to get their ideas off the ground,” Nielson said. “We wanted to support young people and aspiring entrepreneurs in our community.”

The Nielsons enjoy traveling as a family and creating memories together. Nielson also gives his kids the opportunity to have a voice in his business and charitable endeavors.

“With kids, you get unfiltered feedback,” he said. “My kids have been making decisions on multimillion-dollar projects at Jellystone because that’s the age group we’re targeting.”

Nielson believes that Southern Utah is the perfect place for adventure. But whether his sense of adventure takes him on a cross-country RV trip to see new sights or into the boardroom to broker his next million-dollar business idea, he’ll always come right back to his roots. “This is home,” he said. “I love Southern Utah.”

“It’s a great option for people hoping to protect their homes until a full repiping of their plumbing system can be done,” Adams said. “A lot of people also have second homes here, and an automatic shutoff device can be their eyes and ears while they’re away.”

It’s not just about emergency service, however. ‘I’M SO GRATEFUL’: GAMMA WEST CANCER SERVICESUSES CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE PATIENT OUTCOMES

More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States than all other types of cancer combined. For patients with squamous cell and basal cell skin cancers, Gamma West offers radiation therapy as a non-invasive alternative to surgery.

Emily Mortensen, a busy mom and wife from Logandale, Nevada, was diagnosed with multiple sites of basal cell carcinoma several years ago. Her dermatologist referred her to a surgeon, who detailed an excision process that would require cosmetic reconstruction of her forehead and nose.

Reluctant to undergo invasive surgical procedures, Mortensen was determined to find another way. She tried natural and homeopathic remedies that yielded temporary results, but the carcinomas kept coming back. She eventually found the specialists at Gamma West, who apply new technology to types of cancer that are otherwise difficult to effectively treat.

“We continue to utilize new and innovative options for treating cancer,” said Dr. Chase C. Hansen, a radiation oncologist at

In the fall of 2022, Mortensen met with Hansen and his support staff at Gamma West to come up with a treatment plan. Hansen used orthovoltage radiation on her forehead, while the cancer on her nose was treated with an external application of high-dose-rate brachytherapy. Treatment lasted approximately six weeks.

“It was just a couple weeks of healing,” Mortensen said. “It’s amazing how fast it got better.”

The vast majority of skin cancer cases are treated surgically because patients usually get referred to a surgeon right away, Hansen said. Often, they’re not aware that radiation therapy is a viable option. Today, Mortensen doesn’t feel the need to hide certain parts of her face with hair and makeup anymore. Gamma West removed her carcinomas with no surgery, no stitches and virtually no scarring.

“I’m so grateful that I found them,” she said. “I’m just hoping that people can know they don’t have to go under the knife every time they have a basal cell or a squamous cell.”

Gamma West employs state-of-the-art radiation oncology technology to care for patients in Southern Utah. The group’s

flagship treatment is brachytherapy, a type of radiation therapy used to combat breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer and other forms of the disease.

Brachytherapy is designed to eliminate cancer cells with a high degree of precision by destroying the cells internally while more accurately limiting any exposure of surrounding healthy tissue. It involves the highly skilled placement of radiation directly inside the body – and in some cases, within the tumor itself –for a short time.

Hansen explains it as a safer method of delivering high doses of radiation that are well-tolerated by most patients and extremely effective. As one of the largest brachytherapy clinics in the nation, the radiation oncologists at Gamma West have collectively performed tens of thousands of these procedures.

“We have a high volume of brachytherapy patients, and we’re very skilled at it,” Hansen said. “In fact, I don’t know of another radiation center in Utah that treats skin cancer with brachytherapy.”

Each Star Nursery location is a complete garden center offering everything from trees, shrubs, cacti, flowering plants and indoor plants to soils, fertilizers, tools, lighting and irrigation supplies, as well as hardscaping products such as pavers and decorative rocks. With such an extensive selection, both professional landscapers and amateur gardeners can easily find whatever they need to get the job done right.

“I think our product availability is better than anywhere else,” Watt said. “If someone wanted to do a complete landscape and needed 20 or 30 of the same plant, we have it.”

Star Nursery was established in Las Vegas in 1983. The owner, Craig Keough, had operated seasonal nurseries in the area and saw a need for a store that catered to landscaping contractors. Over the years, local homeowners began taking notice of the company’s affordable prices and efficient customer service.

Star Nursery expanded to Southern Utah in 1991 and has continued to grow along with the community ever since. Customers will find everything they need for a variety of landscaping projects at three convenient locations in the greater St. George area as well as the Mesquite store.

The company recently acquired 14 acres of land along the Southern Parkway in Washington City with plans to build its largest store yet. This new location, expected to open in the fall of 2024, will feature a 15,000-square-foot building, a 5-acre rock yard and parking for over 200 cars.

“It’s going to be like nothing St. George has ever seen,” Watt said. Star Nursery currently operates 16 stores in three states, nine of which have rock yards, and employs more than 600 people. Unlike most nurseries, irrigation supplies and hardscaping products account for roughly 50% of their sales. Landscaping contractors are still the cornerstone of the business, Watt said.

“They’ve built us to where we are today,” he added. “Without them, we wouldn’t have known that we needed to sell all of this.”

“I started Spartan Point Health because of my own personal health journey,” Baum said. “At 35, my health started to take a noticeable dive, and I felt like anything other than myself. It was seriously depressing. I finally decided to get some testing done, and sure enough, my testosterone was low. Testosterone Replacement Therapy was a game changer for me, and it was something I wanted others to have access to as well.”

“Inconvenience was a big issue for me when I was seeking treatment. I had multiple appointments within the course of a few weeks, and it was extremely inconvenient. Every appointment cost me around $200, and even as a physician, I would leave my appointments with unanswered questions, unable to communicate with my provider until our next meeting seven to 14 days later.”

So Baum set to work researching what it would take to create a better system to bring quality, convenient care to patients that was also affordable.
