INTRODUCTION The importance of vocabulary in language teaching is now much more widely acknowledged and appreciated. It is not enough just to present new words. Students need lots of interactive activities in order to assimilate and learn the words. They certainly need to spend as much time working on vocabulary as they do on grammar. And the advantage of focusing more on vocabulary is that students find it concrete and accessible, which helps motivation. These worksheets are designed as supplementary material for English language learners at intermediate level. They can be used to complement course materials in a number of very positive and valuable ways. As photocopiables, of course, they have a great built-in flexibility. This is not another textbook that the students have to carry around and be reminded of before each class. Nor are they expected to add it to the long list of books to be bought by their parents at the beginning of the school year. The photocopied pages are very convenient to handle, they can be easily distributed, done in class or taken home, then filed neatly in the student’s ring-binder. Integrated with course work These materials are not ordered in any systematic way in terms of theme or difficulty. They are listed according to topic so that it is easy to look in the contents list to find the sheet that you need to supplement what you are working on. Content The worksheets cover a number of topics and themes. Some are topic based, for example sport, the weather, money, clothes, computers, geography, etc. Others are more language based, for example homonyms, phrasal verbs, word formation, prefixes and suffixes. The level is intermediate so the topics are dealt with in a more sophisticated way than they would be in an elementary book. In addition, the worksheets contain examples of common everyday English as opposed to textbookwritten English. Approach The worksheets offer a variety of approach with some being more serious and others more fun in terms of the activities. These include word puzzles, crosswords, word snakes, matching exercises, gap-filling, sentence completion, word completion, oddone-out, categorising, labelling, word staircases and re-ordering. Attention has been paid to the importance of collocation so that words are often presented with the words that they are most likely to occur with. This is an important philosophy of the book and follows the principles of the Lexical Approach.

4

INTRODUCTION Homework Each worksheet can be treated by the teacher as a ready-made homework exercise. They vary in length but each of them can be done within a single homework session. They are easily marked, either as a class exercise or individually by the teacher. There are answers in the back of the book. The sheets can be corrected by the teacher, the student or other students, and then they can be set as learning homework. Self-study If students are given the answers, the worksheets become useful materials for independent study and revision. Over a holiday period, for example, a set of ten sheets could be issued with the answers on a separate sheet so that students have something motivating and rewarding to work on without the immediate feedback of lessons. Classwork The worksheets are equally usable as class teaching materials. They can be worked on individually, in pairs, in small groups or as a class. They can also be given out to early finishers – particularly the more fun sheets so students don’t feel they are being punished for finishing early! Exploitation The obvious way to use the worksheets is simply to follow the rubric and fill in the answers. It is a good idea to encourage students to use bi-lingual and mono-lingual dictionaries to check out their answers. Groups of students can use the same activities to write worksheets on another topic. When these have been checked, they can exchange their sheets with another group and work on each other’s. Alternatively, students can write an extra activity to practise the words on the worksheet and then exchange their activity with another group.
