History

Background

United States

Asia

Founded by Stacy Bendet in New York City, New York in 2002, Alice and Olivia allows women to express their personal styles.

Alice and Olivia first enters Greater China through a wholesale relationship with the luxury department store, Lane Crawford, in 2008.

The brand originated when Stacy start a personal quest to create the perfect pair of pants. Stacy then entered a partnership with Rebecca Matchett, and thus started Alice and Olivia, which is actually named after both of their mothers.

Since then the brand has been one of the best performing contemporary brands in its stores in Hong Kong and China.

In 2002, Bendet launched a 20-item collection based around that concept at the Russian Tea Room. In 2003, Bendet and Andrew Rosen bought out Rebecca Matchett and entered into business together. They each invested $50,000, to this day, Alice + Olivia has no other investors. (Abdou, J, 2018)

In 2013, Alice and Olivia by Stacy Bendet and ImagineX Group, Asia’s leading retail, brand management and distribution company, announced an exclusive partnership to introduce the brand in Greater China and Southeast Asia through the opening of 23 points of sale over the next five years.

Mission Statement

Brand Identity

Alice and Olivia’s brand statement says;

Bendet described Alice and Olivia in a business of fashion article as:

“alice + olivia matches Bendet’s love of vintage and all things feminine with a mission to make women feel empowered and alluring. Ornamented fabrics, whimsical prints ultra-flattering fits provide today’s modern woman with options for every day and every occasion.” - CFDA

“A very feminine brand, a girl’s girl brand”.

The company started with the goal to make the perfect pair of pants, and since then has turned into a retail empire. Even though Alice and Olivia is now a $200+ million company, the quality and design of the pieces have remained the same. “As designers, we design things to make people feel special. If we don’t commit to that in everything we do, why are we here? Your intention has to come all the way through.”

The brands voice screams fun-loving, colorful classics, with a retro twist infused into the latest trends in fashion. The company’s main focus always shines on the designs. The company came to fruition with the garment first, so that order still reigns true. Always focusing on the clothing first. Bendet touches on this in a business of fashion article saying: “It is a little bit crazy at times, but all of those times I kind of hear Andrew saying, ‘Focus on making and producing beautiful clothing… and ship it on time.”

Consumer Habits Millennials, those aged 18 to 29, are already China’s biggest spenders on luxury goods in Asia Pacific, followed by those in South Korea and Hong Kong. Over a third of millennials in the region prefer Western brands over regional or local brands. This proves to be a huge strength for Alice and Olivia creating a product development specifically for Hong Kong. Shopping is an essential part of the lives of Hong Kong people. “the world’s biggest shopaholics” were found in Asia. Hong Kong consumers intend to spend on average $2584 US over the next year. Amongst the Asian countries, Hong Kong people hold the top rank with over 90 percent of the respondents admitted to shopping “as a form of amusement” or even “when [they] don’t actually need anything”. Hong Kong people ranked the first for shopping once a week for “entertainment” (37%), followed by the United Arab Emirates (30%) and Thailand (27%) .

Demographics In the last decade, girls have been more likely than boys to be enrolled in the top-ranking schools. As increasingly more women and men stayed longer in education and started to work later, the median age at first marriage had risen steadily for both women and men in the period 1986 to 2017. These statics are showing use that woman in Hong Kong are increasingly becoming more independent and free-thinkers.

It is all about girl power and this woman is the embodiment of that. She is single but still dating. A modern day working woman that isn’t afraid to own and show off her girly side.

Consumer

The Alice and Olivia girl doesn’t care about the latest fashion trends, but rather the brand. She likes bold colors are girly silhouettes and isn’t going to change her taste just because Vogue says so. She loves to travel the world and take as many photos as she can along the way. She cares about her appearance and how she conveys herself on social medias. Her favorite social networks are instagram and pintrest, they play a big role in her day to day life. She can be perceived as “shallow” or “basic” but she truly just enjoys the little things like getting the perfect instagram shot or going to the flower marker with her friends.

Instagram: @Moannaxdessire

She is single, but doesn’t see that as a problem and still dates casually. She mostly focuses on herself and her friends. She believes females should pursue their dreams, have courage to express their views, appreciate their own strengths, and should be truthful to themselves.

Competitors

Tory Burch

Tory Burch’s target audience is a particular group of females aged between 21-35 years old. The target audience loves the brands emphasis on social media, and collaberations. The brands target audience is sophisticated and self-driven. They love to travel and experience new things. They have high education and social media plays a big role in their day-to-day life. This target consumer is very much the same as Alice and Olvia’s. The products Tory Burch sells are similar as well, though the style is much more sophisticated and less girly. Tory Burch does have a presence in Hong Kong, but not nearly as strong as Alice and Olivia does.

When researching colors that are projected to be trending for spring/summer 2020 we found that the primary colors were projected to be popular.

Color Research

This was important and helpful for our product development because Alice and Olivia is known for using lots of vibrant colors. It is a staple for the brand so we knew that it was something that would have to be implemented in our designs. Our research also showed us that pastels and muted colors as well. These were the perfect hues to add into our collection to add a breathe in between all the bright colors.

When researching print trends for spring/ summer 2020 on WGSN we found that huge placement prints were projected to become popular. This was something that inspired us for our designs.

Print Research

Also things like bright colored stripes and citrus fruits were shown as well. We took inspiration from the bright colors and also the maximalism, which was incorporating multiple prints on a single garment.

Fabric Research

For fabric research we saw that things like mesh details and sheers were project to be popular for 2020. These light weight fabrics are perfect for our product development since we are focusing on Hong Kong where it is so hot that light weight fabrics are a necessity. Other fabrics that we found during our research that fit well with our development and the Alice and Olivia history were bright colored metallics and bright cottons. Perfect for capturing the vibrant colors in our patterns and colored tops.

The silhouettes that we fond when doing research for spring/ summer 2020 showed a similar theme in the shirts. Things such as shirt, but the neck is knotted, or a tank top where there is a corset attached.

Silhouette Research

All the silhouettes that we chose are simple that have just been slightly elevated. This was perfect for our designs, especially being that the skirts are the main focus, having shirts that are basics but just slightly elevated and modernized was perfect research to inspire our collection designs.

When researching trends for skirt silhouettes we came upon the same conclusion as we did with the shirt silhouettes. All the silhouettes we have shown are ones that you have seen before, and that Alice and Olivia has done before, but elevated and modernized into something new.

Silhouette Research

This perfect for Alice and Olivia because it isn’t to far off from what they’ve done before, it’s only been updated and made modern. There are things such as a pleated skirt, but asymmetrical. A pencil skirt, but with the bottom flaring out. All these things are recognizable but only added with elements to elevate the design and make it new.

In our mood board we wanted to convey our consumers day to day life in Hong Kong. The colors she would see, the places she would go to, the things she would eat and take pictures of.

Mood Board

Our Hong Kong girl is the instagram model, the famous blogger. She wants to go to the Choi Hung Estate and take a picture because the colors match perfectly with her feed. She goes to the fish and flower markets with her friends dressed in an outfit she carefully planned out the night before. We want to represent her day to day life with outfits that work for each occasion. The colors we have in the pictures are bright primary’s with bursts of lighter pastels here and there. It’s fun, loud, bright, and most of all it screams everything our Alice and Olivia girl loves!

All the colors seen in our color board are from the wgsn color forecast for spring 2020. Beyond that though, they also can all be seen in our mood board as well.

Color Board

We have the vibrant primary red and blue that you can see in the Choi Hung Estate. The orange from the fish at the fish market. Pinks and purples of the flower market. The bright yellow of the egg tarts and cream from the bobba tea. These colors not only are forcasted for 2020 but they are representative of the story that we are conveying.

For ideation of our prints we created both literal and more abstract representations of our mood board pictures.

Print Process

For the fish print, at first we tried a more literal interpretation of the fish in the plastic bags like they are at the market, but it didn’t look visually pleasing for a skirt. We ended up taking the bag out and just place the fish as though the were swimming. Similar to the problem of the fish, for the bubble tea print we tried visually showing it with egg tarts. We then tried having the splash of the bubble tea but decided against it being that it could appear that she had spilled on her dress.

PG. 30

Our final prints scream our Alice and Olivia girl. It is everything she loved and does in Hong Kong. Our first print is the “I WANT TO” pattern. It features sentences that say, “I want to eat dim sum with you” and “I want to drink milk tea with you”. It also features fun bright colors. Second print, Summer Escape, is a more abstract floral print to represent the flower market. It a more classic print that is comfortable for her to wear. Third print, The Gold Fishies, is a representative of the fish market. The color variation in the fish makes it more unique and pop with color.

Final Prints

The four print, Bubbleicious, is an abstract representation of the bubble tea. The dots represent the bobba while not being to upfront and allowing the pattern to feel almost like a normal polka dot. Fifth print, Pink Orchid, is our statement placement print. It represents the flower market but also is a popular flower of Hong Kong. Sixth print, Choi Hung Estate, is for the Choi Hung Estate. It is a pretty abstract representation of the color-ways that are shown in the building itself. It is bright and bold, perfect for Alice and Olivia. And finally, our last print, The Bouquets, is a more literally interpretation of the flower markets in Hong Kong. Showing them in bouquets like they are at the market. PG. 31
