THE SPIRIT OF BUSINESS

In 1992, actor and comedian Jack Palance famously performed one-armed push-ups on stage after winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This display of strength and vigor (at age 73, no less) became a legendary moment in awards history. It also reminded everyone that winning isn’t just about the trophy but the spirit that trophy represents.

Recently we celebrated our annual Business Awards and much like Palance’s memorable night, our awards night was filled with moments that highlighted the spirit of our local business community. While no one provided evidence of their extraordinary physical fitness, the winners (and all the nominations) displayed the kind of spirit that makes us certain that if Rapid City were a person, one-armed push-ups would be no big deal.

Welcome to this issue of Elevate, where we celebrate the winners of our 3rd Annual Business Awards. The big awards, The George and The Granite, went to Alan Solano and Reptile Gardens. Solano, who has served the region as an executive, volunteer, board member, and nonprofit leader, spoke about power of servant leadership, while Reptile Gardens, the legendary business as famous as Mount Rushmore, hit it out of the park with a focus on the history of the Black Hills tourism industry. The other winners—Monument Health, Black Hills Surgical Hospital, Black Hills Federal Credit Union, Bashful Bison, The Career Learning Center of the Black Hills, Pure Medical Aesthetics, and A&B Business Solutions—were all deserving and amazing.

As you read through the profiles and stories of this year’s winners, we hope you feel the same pride and excitement that we do. These businesses are not just surviving; they are thriving and paving the way for a prosperous future for all of us in Rapid City. Let’s continue to support and celebrate them for making our local economy strong—yes, even strong enough for one-armed push-ups.

Stay safe and God-speed.

Elevate is a monthly publication produced by Elevate Rapid City. It is the premier business magazine for the Black Hills region telling the stories that make our area unique and vibrant.

REPTILE GARDENS

It all began in 1935, when 19-year-old Earl Brockelsby discovered people’s innate interest in snakes. As a young tour guide at a local Rapid City attraction, this fearless snake enthusiast would often end his tours by removing his hat and revealing a live rattlesnake coiled on top of his head!

Wanting to explore people’s fascination with snakes, Earl enlisted the aid of some friends and built an 18 by 24 foot building at the top of a long hill about 3 miles south of Rapid City, and put a handful of specimens on display. The location was carefully chosen because in those days, cars would often overheat as they reached the

top of a long hill. The idea was for them to stop in Reptile Gardens’ parking lot to cool their radiators and stay to see the Gardens.

On June 3, 1937, the doors were opened, and Reptile Gardens was officially in business. Admission was 10¢ for adults and 5¢ for children to see the exhibit. That first day of operation Reptile Gardens took in $3.85. For the next two days, no one visited and on the following two days it took in only 40 cents and 50 cents respectively. Fortunately business improved; by 1941, the business had 15 employees and was showing a profit.

In 1965, Reptile Gardens was forced to move due to the construction of a new highway. Moving to its current location, the new and improved park featured a new Sky Dome with a Safari Room. This large enclosed area gave visitors the rare opportunity to walk amongst free-roaming reptiles and birds. Although this kind of exhibit has become common at zoos, Earl was among the first to envision and create one in the US.

Reptile Gardens has continued on as a family business with Earl’s nephew, Joe Maierhauser, as the President & CEO. Earl’s grandson, Jeff Oldham, represents

the third generation and serves as the General Manager and Chairman of the Board. The second and third generations are dedicated to carrying on Earl’s vision, not only by having top-notch displays, but also by offering outstanding hospitality. The State of South Dakota has honored Reptile Gardens twice with the George Mickelson Award for Great Service to South Dakota visitors (1994 and 2018), the only business so far to be honored twice. In 2009, Reptile Gardens was the Prairie States Family Business of the Year, and in 2011 the SBA named it as South Dakota’s Family Business of the Year.

Reptile Gardens has been a member of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce now know as Elevate Rapid City for over 60 years.

They support many local and national charities including the United Way, Storybook Island and the Black Hills Raptor Center. Annually they give over $10,000 in free admissions for local fundraisers. Reptile Gardens also seeks to educate the public on environmental issues and works closely with many major zoos worldwide to promote species survival through breeding loans.

Since its founding 87 years ago, Reptile Gardens has provided a great entertainment experience for millions of visitors by giving them the chance to observe exotic, unusual animals up close.

What Reptile Gardens is all about is summed up in its Mission Statement: “Through our passions we inspire, educate, and entertain all who visit our world-class zoo and botanical gardens.”•

Alan Solano was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. His parents, Delfino and JoAnne Solano were blessed with 8 children. Born the 4th of eight, Alan had the privilege of looking up to his older brother and sisters while helping to mentor his younger siblings, not always to the greatest success. He attended Robbinsdale Elementary School, South Junior High and graduated from Central High School in 1984.

Alan received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration & Accounting from Black Hills State University in 1991.

From an early age, Alan learned from his father the value of hard work, family, and giving back to your community. He began his first “real” job at 14 working for Kearns Machinery. Not having his driver’s license yet, his mother had to drop him off and pick him up from

work, a real motivator to study for and pass the driver’s license exam! Alan worked at various businesses throughout high school and college. While going to college, Alan met Carol Day, a nurse working at Rapid City Regional Hospital. They married in 1988 and started their own family in 1989 with the birth of their first daughter. They have been blessed with 5 children (Jaimie, Rachel, Ashley, Zach and Parker), and now have 4 grandchildren (August, Addie, Theo and Sage).

Upon graduating college, Alan started a 27year career with West River Mental Health

es for Children, Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons, and the Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment. Alan was a 1997 graduate of Leadership Rapid City. He also served 6 years as Senator for District 32 and was a Majority Whip, chair of Senate Education and served as chair to a variety of summer studies.

Alan continues to serve on boards for Elevate Rapid City, Bush Foundation, Rapid City Strategic Housing Trust Fund and the Rapid City Community Investment Committee.
