“Win Today, DOMINATE Tomorrow!"
The 28th Bomb Wing is divided into the 28th Operations Group, the 28th Maintenance Group, and the 28th Mission Support Group
World class Airmen building on our Raider legacy, leading the premier bomb wing in cutting edge long range strike.
Ellsworth Air Force Base was established as Rapid City Army Air Base on January 2, 1942, to train B-17 Flying Fortress crews for World War II. After briefly closing in 1946, it reopened in 1947 under the newly formed U.S. Air Force as home to the 28th Bombardment Wing (BMW), flying B-29 Superfortresses
In March 1953, Brigadier General Richard E. Ellsworth, commander of the 28th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, was killed along with 22 crew members when their RB-36 crashed in Newfoundland during a routine exercise. Later that year, President Eisenhower dedicated the base in his honor, renaming it Ellsworth Air Force Base.
Over the decades, Ellsworth transitioned from B-36 Peacemakers to B-52 Stratofortresses in 1957 and then to B-1B Lancers in 1987, earning the nickname "Bad to the Bone." The base also played a key role in the Cold War with Minuteman ICBMs from 1962 until their deactivation in 1994.
In 1999, Ellsworth became a lead wing in the Air Force’s new Expeditionary Air Force concept, supporting rapid global response efforts Today, the 28th Bomb Wing continues to lead in national defense, particularly through Bomber Task Force (BTF) and CONUS-toCONUS missions that deploy B-1B Lancers to various locations around the world to enhance training, interoperability with allies, and strategic deterrence.
Read the complete history here.
“Guardian of the North”
Ellsworth includes approximately 3,063 military members and 733 civilian employees and their family members The base’s two sister cities are Box Elder (population of nearly 14,000) and Rapid City (population of nearly 80,000) There are also over 14,000 veterans in the Rapid City region.
