THE FACE OF AMERICAN POLO


Nic Roldan is arguably the United States’ best polo player, the Face of American Polo. He is the present leading American polo player with an impressive eight goal handicap and is currently Captain of the US Polo Team. He hit some major milestones recently, winning in two of the world’s most prestigious events, the Queen’s Cup in England and the Argentine Open. The Queen’s Cup is played in the presence of her majesty, with the Queen presenting the trophy to the winner. What many might not know is that when he is not saddled up on the polo field, or working as a model for Wilhelmina, he is also branching out to work on many other amazing projects. “I have been the face and the ambassador for many things but I’ve been really wanting to get more into the business side of things.” Richard Gerding: We know all about your polo and modeling, but what is your latest project and how did you get involved? Nic Roldan: I Have been wanting to get involved with spirits for some time now and am friends with the founder of one of the leading, innovative spirit brands, Matti Antilla of Grain & Barrel. Along with our other partner Diego Urutia, we came up with the idea of doing a Gin. I feel like Gin has an opportunity now. It is very popular in Europe, and the Vodka and Tequila markets have been too saturated in my opinion. We wanted to come up with a catchy, aspirational, polo aspect to our Gin. We all share a passion for the sport of polo. It is called High Goal Luxury Gin, and it is a one hundred percent American made premium Gin With hints




of mint and citrus. I am an owner, ambassador and the face of it along with Matti and Diego, my two partners. We will be launching in December and are looking at a price point of around fifty dollars. This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time now and it’s really exciting to be on the business side of things. RG: I hear you have also been working in collaboration with Revo sunglasses. What can we look forward to on that end? NR: Yes, I am very excited to be working on a couple of things with them. For one we are coming out with a pair of lifestyle glasses based on their Quinn model sunglasses, but what I’m most excited about is a pair of protective glasses specifically for playing polo. There are many ways to get injured playing polo, but if you lose your eyes that’s it. Your career is over, so it is very important to protect your eyes and up until now we as polo players have been using all sorts of sunglasses designed for other sports, but none of them were designed with polo in mind. This will be a high performance design specifically for polo players. I am friends with the new owner of Revo, and he has been wanting to get into the polo market so the partnership has been a perfect fit. RG: So your polo career is going good, business is going good, and family is going good as well. What has it been like working with your mother on interior design? NR: So we just finished building our first spec house from the ground up inside the Palm Beach



Polo & Country Club here in Wellington Florida, and just finished another personal project with my mom. It is another house here in the Polo Club. We work great together. Her ideas and mine go hand in hand. Our styles are really different, but they go really good together. I love being involved in the building and design process. Real estate is something I want to get more involved in. It’s Been a passion of mine for a long time now. RG: Apparel is another business you have been dabbling into, can you let us know what sort of things you are involved in? NR: Yes I am involved with an apparel company called Polo Gear. It is a line for polo players, and we are making apparel and gear. Fashion has always been a passion of mine so it was something I’ve always wanted to do. RG: Lets talk a little polo. You are working on a world polo league with the Ganzis. How is that going? NR: Yes. When this pandemic hit, we were in the middle of our second year. The first year was good, the second year was a huge improvement. We had ten teams, all really competitive. We had some of the best players in the world and it’s really taken a big step forward. We got some big sponsors this year, but unfortunately our season got cut short, so we will be here until we leave for the summer in Aspen. Hopefully we will be able to play by then, but we are just taking it day by day as of right now.

Mr Bevolo worked for Ford automobiles, Sikorsky helicopters, Higgins landing crafts for WWII . He was a skilled metal worker before starting his own business in the French Quarter in 1945. He turned to lighting after chance encounter with notable Louisiana architect, A Hays Town to create the Original French Quarter Lantern. This historic company located in New Orleans, is the oldest continuously operating gas light manufacturer in the country Richard Gerding: Tell us a little about how Bevolo has made history as a fourth-generation family business. What is the ethos of the company and how has it involved in today’s technological age? Drew Bevolo: Since 1945, Bevolo has been manufacturing the highest quality traditional, antique, and custom designed hand-made open-flame copper lanterns, known world-wide for our craftsmanship and attention to detail. We hold true to the belief that old world craftsmanship is what truly makes our fixtures burn for a lifetime. By using the highest-grade materials, the most efficient, patented burners, the finest industry-standard techniques and real craftsmen, we are able to continue providing our customers with high-quality lanterns that last for generations to come. Established in 1945, our brand is deeply rooted in history & tradition. Although we are constantly evolving and developing to stay on trend, we believe that classic design & quality products never go out of style. Every project is meaningful to us. A huge part of our business is collaborating with notable architects and designers on restaurants, hotels, and commercial projects but, just as


exciting are the personal projects where we work directly with homeowners to find the perfect lighting for their home. Most of our clients work with us through our complimentary design service – as we prefer to review every project to ensure the best result. Original French Quarter Lantern “The origin of one of the most iconic features of New Orleans: One evening in the early 1960s, notable Louisiana architect A Hays Town took a stroll through the mesmeric streets of the French Quarter. He was seeking inspiration for light fixtures. On Royal Street, Town passed a door and heard the distinct tink, tink, tink of ball-peen hammers. He entered the shop, met the owner, and asked Mr. Bevolo Sr. if he could collaborate on a light fixture. If you can draw it, the shop owner said, I can make it. And an icon was born: the Original French Quarter Lantern, a copper, brass, and glass light now found in countless numbers of residences, hotels, restaurants, and resorts throughout the world.” RG: Where can readers find some of Bevolo’s most iconic fixtures in New Orleans? DB: You can find Bevolo lanterns on some of the most notable homes, restaurants, hotels, and street lighting throughout New Orleans. Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights come to life, illuminating nearly every building listed on the area’s National Register of Historic Places, including The Cabildo, The Presbytère and Jackson Square. Many famous restaurants and hotels, including; Brennans Restaurant, Tableau, The Royal Sonesta, The Bourbon Orleans.





The Bourbon Orleans. Bevolo has 4 unique locations in the heart of the French Quarter & has solely operated out of New Orleans since the company was established in 1945.
