MARC DENNIS

UNPARALLELED HYPER-REALIST & MODERN MASTER Written by Jamie Agoglia

Momento Mori, 2021 Oil on linen, 58”x 60”

M

arc Dennis is one of the greatest artists of our time. A hyper-realist on a wicked upward trajectory, coming off the most successful show of his career. He is inspired by the moment - these evolving moments that we are living in, the happiness, and the new possibilities that life is bringing to the table once again. Jamie Agoglia: Great things are happening in the studio, how so?! Marc Dennis: I’m coming off of a very successful show at Gavlak Gallery in Palm Beach, and we, all artists, work really hard to build up a show, and then we’re never really sure what happens when the work leaves the studio, especially during the pandemic. I got very little feedback because I had very few viewers in my studio. I didn’t know how the reaction was going to be and I always want to make sure and even though I can’t be prepared for that I will embrace it either way, and the show did really well, and it made me really happy. And because of that, I was inspired to get back in the studio and begin exploring how I could take those paintings to the next level. I always think as an artist “what’s the next level?” In other words, when I’m working on something, I’m always thinking about the next painting even before that painting I’m working on is completed. So here I am, taking it to the next level, and it’s like a new dawning! It’s very exciting as I don’t know where these are gonna go but inspiration guides me so I look at that like sunshine. Well said in correlation with the sunshine coming through the window and what great timing for you to have had the successful show at Gavlak down in Palm Beach, congratulations by the way. It’s such a unique time we’re in, with economists looking at this time as somewhat of a reflection of the roaring 20’s with art, luxury real estate, home and design, and the affluent have had a moment to take a step back, appreciate life, appreciate what matters to them most. And one of those key ingredients is art from leading exceptional artists such as yourself. I would think that would also give you this underlying accelerated sense of inspiration. There‘s no doubt. New York, and I’m in this little enclave referred to as a “cultural hamlet,” between the two bridges, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge, this area known as Dumbo, which is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, it’s PACKED with tourists! There are people out, most of the streets are closed for outdoor seating. They’re out there, and everybody seems pretty damned happy! What’s best naturally as an artist, for me, it motivates me. Happiness

motivates me. It’s been a hellish past year and a half for most countries, most people. I can’t speak for anyone but myself and my kids, but it was rough. As an artist, you’re isolated. I go in my studio and I was on sort of a double or meta-lockdown, very isolated. Now there are dividends to benefit from and that is of course restaurants opening, cafes opening, etc. For me, I can look out my studio window and I can see people milling around and talking, and it’s definitely motivating! Hopefully it motivates people across the board and we continue to do the right thing. Very well said in respect to happiness being a motivation for you. When was the last time you did a show prior to Gavlak? Marc Dennis: I had a solo show with Nancy Littlejohn Fine Art in Houston, Texas titled, “Paradise Lost,” from January 30 to March 6 in 2020. I also had a painting of mine titled, “Billionaires are People Too” made into a billboard as part of The Billboard Creative project installed on Melrose Avenue in downtown Los Angeles and is up indefinitely. In 2019 I had a solo show of four paintings at the Core Club in New York City from January 3 to March 30. In 2018 I had a solo show at Cris Worley Fine Arts in Dallas, Texas from November 2 to December 30; and an exhibition at SOCO Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina. 2018 was a loaded year, as I was also selected for the Armory Art Fair VIP Studio Tour. And last but not least I was invited to be the artist at a Sip & Sketch sponsored by Art News & Art in America, at the Armory Art Fair in the Publications Lounge on Pier 94, in New York City. It’s been a fun ride. So this was a significant one for you? This was the biggest show of my life. Wow! Congratulations, Marc! So does that, along with happiness, inspire you to do more shows? As you are in the studio working on new paintings, are you analyzing them thinking as to how each one will work in the next potential show? That’s definitely part of it. We’re already discussing future exhibitions. But what’s most important now, on my so-called creative docket, is preparing paintings, getting them done, for the art fairs which are now back. I will be represented with Gavlak Gallery in the Armory Show, and I’m super excited to finish the paintings that I’m currently working on, so she can select from which ones will be the most potent for the Armory. Basel, the Armory, Frieze, these are all like little exhibitions in and of themselves. Hopefully they’re well attended and everybody’s happy to be back! There’s usually a year between these shows and there’s a lot of work to prepare. I have

a solo exhibition at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts - it’s in the wonderful paradise known as “The Berkshires,” where I lived for 14 summers. The exhibition was arranged by Joanne Cassullo, whom the gallery is named after, and Joanne is also a Trustee at the Whitney Museum of American Art. I would think that with respect to the attendance at the art fairs it’s going to be unlike anything ever before, really. With everything that we missed out on being able to do last year, and now entering a time where possibilities are opening up again, I think gives people that moment to reflect, be present, and think about what’s most important in one’s life. And with art being one of those elements that is the most important, I would think that the attendance and also the energy behind them is going to be absolutely sensational! That must be really exciting and motivating and inspiring! Yeah, I’m with ya, and I hope so! I would think people are pumped not only to see art but to also see each other again.

Caravaggio’s Cat, 2021 Oil on linen, 32”x 34”

How exciting to not only be an artist at this time, but to be an artist such as yourself! One of the greatest artists on the planet, at this time, in your career, in your life. I still have trouble looking at most of your paintings and really comprehending how they’re paintings, and how an individual, you, can paint them. They’re literally better than photographs, if you could take a photograph of what you paint in reality. First of all, I’m humbled, and I just gotta make it clear that you said that, I didn’t! I did say it! In my humble opinion, it’s a fact. To look at the flowers, the birds, the people, whatever it might be, the intricacy...what was it first like when you realized you could paint how you paint?! When I was a kid, a teenager, high school, I always wanted people to walk up behind me if I was drawing or painting, and be able recognize exactly what it was they were looking at. I always wanted to hear “Oh my God, that looks exactly like chipmunk,” or “...that looks exactly like that plant.” Or that lizard or whatever

From A Close Distance, 2021 Oil on linen, 56” x 60”

it was I was drawing, whatever it was, I always fed off of what people could identify and immediately recognize. From then on I just wanted to continue honing my skills and making sure that I always got the details right, I was very much a naturalist, a zoologist underneath it all, I got really good at identifying one species to another. Always the details that signified the differences between different species. So details really matter to me. To get details right you need to really understand the form, the structure, the color, and that just comes with not perfecting so to speak but just drawing a lot and painting a lot, and the more I did it, the more my skill honed and the more tight or oriented I got towards detail. When I had a show at Hirschl & Adler Modern 2008, someone asked me, “So what do you call this style? Is it photorealism?” No it’s not photo-realism because the photorealist painters to the best of my understanding, never violated the photograph from which they were working. I told this person I don’t just paint from a photo, I paint from hundreds of photos, and I violate the photo, I don’t paint it the way I see it. I take a lot of liberties to create these very interesting and complex compositions of whatever it might be, and she said “So what do you call that style?” I said I don’t know and I started getting into trying to explain it and she said “Wow, you’re really hyper! Maybe it’s just hyper-realism.” And I thought she meant it because she thought I was hyper, maybe she did (laughs), I don’t know, but it became known as hyper-realism, and I evidently wasn’t the only person doing it. Maybe the term was coined prior, I don’t know but I had never heard it before. From then on, I’m now known as a hyper-realist. That’s a great story! So then when was it that you realized that this is what you were going to do, that this was your passion, that you could monetize this, “I’m all in,” when was that? To be honest, (laughs) I’m still trying to figure it out. Life is good in that sense. My career’s on a wicked upward trajectory, but it’s always a game of cat and mouse in one’s own sensibility, I have my own doubts, everything has to come together for me to recognize that something is successful. I have to feel it, I have to think about it in a positive way. It’s like cooking. Everything’s gotta be just right for me to say “ok, it’s working.” Right now, that’s happening for me in my career. But I never knew I was going to be an artist, I never chose the art career as a conscious decision as a kid or in high school or college. Art chose me. It’s just something I did, and I was really good at it. I was very into it. I worked super hard. I just never stopped. It was just such a passion. So I knew, if this is what being an artist is all about, then I think I can do this! One thing led to another. You stay positive. You work really, really, really hard. I can’t stress it enough, how many hours one needs to be in the studio to make effective paintings. A lot of determination. Never burning bridges, and always staying focused. DAVID YARROW THE WILD WEST

“T

here are no universal rules in photography— only personal ones. My central premise is that if photography was a language, then focus would be the most important word in that lexicon. Focus deliberately includes or it deliberately excludes, and it should be emphatically clear what the photographer is trying to say.” – David Yarrow David Yarrow was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966. He took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, David took the famous picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other sporting events. Many years later David established himself as a fine art photographer by documenting the natural world from new perspectives and the last nine years have been career defining. David’s evocative and immersive photography of life on earth is most distinctive and has earned him an ever growing following amongst art collectors. His large monochrome images made in Los Angeles are on display in leading galleries and museums across Europe and North America. He is now recognized as one of the best selling fine art photographers in the world and his limited edition works regularly sell at high prices at Sotheby’s and other auction houses.

MEET THE FOCKERS Texas, USA - 2020 “I have been fortunate to travel around much of the world taking photographs - but I don’t think I have found a better backdrop to stage a shoot than this remote outpost on the Mexican border in Big Bend Ranch State Park. It was a hell of a drive from the team’s base in Marfa and securing permits was challenging, but I knew it would be worthwhile - the building and the mountains behind were just so good. They play effortlessly into the lore of the Wild West. Better still, the area is called Contraband Creek. The nearest town of note is the bizarre art community of Terlingua. It is difficult to imagine the circumstances that led to people living around here unless they were in a witness protection programme or cooking crystal meth. It’s a sketchy place that would look at home in a Mad Max movie, not mainstream Texas. It was clear that whatever I did with this gift of a canvas, the concept had to be badass and mean. Josie Canseco - the Victoria’s Secret girl - was perfect for the lead role as she can look badass and still retain her femininity and sexuality. My instincts were that my camera lens should be encroaching upon a place of outlaws and that the underlying narrative should major on the dangers of trespassing. There could be no happy ending for the trespasser here.”

THE END OF THE LINE Texas, USA - 2020 “Longhorn cattle are not only emblematic of Texas, they are also the most visually spectacular cows in the world. On location on the abandoned film set of “There Will Be Blood”, we tried different combinations with a few prizewinning cows. But the reality was very clear - they are not camera friendly. In fact, they are considerably less compliant than the elephants of Amboseli, Kenya. To achieve this composition was a real test of the team’s patience and all my thanks go to Ryan Thompson and his fellow cowboys, who worked with great skill to engineer this frame. I was doubly appreciative, as lying on the old rail sleepers is not the most comfortable way to spend a morning. It was critical that the bull was facing me and there were no tension points with his fantastic horns. Rail roads were so integral to the great push West as indeed were wagons and it struck me that they could complement each other outside a station. There is no real need for people to be in the image - there is enough there and the composition works. This is a personal favorite of mine.”

J. STEVEN MANOLIS QATARI RHAPSODIES & SONATAS WRITTEN BY BY DONALD KUSPIT

“W

hen it comes to Color, and the intellectual pursuit of ‘Communicating Through Color,’ Wassily Kandinsky’s longawaited heir-to-be is J. Steven Manolis, whose works signal an ebullient 21st century renaissance of the long absent glories of Abstract Expressionism.” Seen in an art historical perspective, J. Steven Manolis’ Qatari Rhapsodies and Sonatas series of paintings are the consummate statement—the climactic grand realization—of so-called “musical painting,” that is, painting that emulates the condition of music, “the ultimate teacher,” as Wassily Kandinsky, the originator of musical painting, asserted. For him, pure color was like “pure sound:” both “exercised a direct influence upon the soul,” he wrote, which, under their spell, “experiences a nonobjective vibration that is more complex…more ‘supersensible’”—“spiritual,” “mystical,” to offer other words he used—”than the effect on the soul produced by a bell, a vibrating string, a falling board.”Not since Kandinsky has the visceral character and emotional power implicit in color been recognized and communicated as completely and convincingly as they are in Manolis’ red paintings. They’re all the more important because they restore Abstract Expressionism, with its painterly color—color gestures, conveying a lived experience of color—to credibility after the assault on it by Minimalism, led by Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly, who regarded color matter of factly, not to say dispassionately, as a physical phenomenon, rather than as a spiritual phenomenon; that is, as invariably informed by its perceiver’s feelings, more broadly his outlook on life and values. Color falls flat in their paintings, rather than elevates the surface (and the viewer), as it does in Manolis’ paintings. They have a two-fold art historical significance and value: they epitomize the modernist pursuit of color as an independent phenomenon that began with Impressionism and that came to fruition in Kandinsky’s paintings, where the primacy of color is an aesthetic end in itself and an emblem of autonomous selfhood; and they are a renaissance of Abstract Expressionism.

J. Steven Manolis, REDWORLD Glaze, 2017, Acrylic on canvas, 120 x 120 inches, 4 panels, 60 x 60 inches each. Framed: 123 x 123 inches. Photographed by Kim Sargent at Manolis Projects.

Their high spirits are bracing, a tonic for body and soul; they have a magical effect, for they fulfill the unconscious wish for an aesthetic and emotional sanctuary—a beautiful and joyous hortus conclusus—in an emotionally ugly world, thus repairing the damage done to it by its indifference to beauty. As the poet and critic William Gass wrote, “in a world which does not provide beauty for its own sake,” and “where the loveliness of flowers, landscapes, faces, trees and sky are adventitious and accidental,” “it is the artist’s task to add to the world’s objects and ideas” “beings whose qualities harm no one,” yet whose beauty “rewards even the most casual notice.” One cannot casually notice Manolis’ paintings; their beauty is overwhelming, and instantly impacts us body and soul. To discover and experience Manolis’ beautiful paintings is, then, unusually uplifting, all the more so because they are peculiarly humane, unexpectedly so for abstract painting, which, as Mark Rosenthal wrote in his survey of Abstraction in the Twentieth Century, tends to be a “hermetic” cognitive— formal—exercise rather than an out-going intersubjective experience, bringing with it a sense of intimacy rather than confirming one’s isolation. Manolis’ abstract paintings are a fresh new rejuvenating start for a tired old abstraction.

Red was the most spiritual—“internally alive”—of all colors for Kandinsky, for it is a “limitless…highly lively” color, “turbulent” and “warm” at once, conveying “immense…purposeful strength.” The “uniformity of red” is “the final chord of a symphony that takes every color to the zenith of life, like the fortissimo of a great orchestra,” Kandinsky declared. Kandinsky gives red a central place in his scheme of colors—for him it is the most dominant color, for it contains in itself blue and violet as well as orange and yellow, suggesting Manolis’ obsession with red—his ideologizing it, amounting to an idealizing identification with it—is not misplaced. His REDWORLD series of paintings, 2015-2017—a tour de force—proclaim his command of red: not even Barnett Newman’s allred Vir Heroicus Sublimis, 1950-1951, burns as brightly—shines as forcefully, as though with an inextinguishable inner light—as Manolis’ REDWORLD paintings. Manolis’ vermilion, a brilliant scarlet red, conveys “the constancy of a powerful emotion: it is like a steadily burning passion, a self-confident power that cannot be easily subdued,” Kandinsky wrote; Newman’s oddly anemic red has the worn out look of a spent emotion. Both are masters of chromatic abstraction—color field painters—but Newman’s flat, deadpan red looks spiritless next to Manolis’ sizzling vermilion, all the more intense and assertive because it is given painterly presence.

EDEN GALLERY A NEW VISION FOR LUXURY CONTEMPORARY ART WRITTEN BY SARAH DOAR

C

ontemporary art distinguishes itself from other genres by representing the art of the era we currently live in. Contemporary artists are diverse; represented globally with a variety of styles inspired by everything from ubiquitous cartoons to abstract graffiti. Eden Gallery stands out as one of the world’s premier galleries; representative of a new kind of contemporary art that is utterly unique. Since its inception in 1997 by Cathia Klimovsky, Eden Gallery has been committed to shining a spotlight on original contemporary art that is congruous with an optimistic and colorful view of life. Stepping into any of their flagship locations, it is clear that Eden’s family of diverse artists has at least one thing in common: a love of color. Indeed, to spend time in any of Eden’s galleries is akin to being in a candy store of luminous color. There are currently six gallery locations worldwide: two in New York City, on Madison Avenue and SoHo, Aspen, Miami, London, and Mykonos. The four-story SoHo gallery boasts high ceilings, natural light, and a creative atmosphere that welcomes both patrons and passers-by alike. Located in one of SoHo’s rare and protected historic buildings on the corner of Broome and Greene Street, each artwork awakens the senses with vibrant explosions of color. Handpainted sculptures by Dorit Levinstein and Angelo Accardi wall art punctuate the minimalist space. Greeting visitors at the entrance of Eden Gallery Madison Ave is David Kracov’s monumental free-standing metal sculpture aptly titled, “Gift of Life”. With a red gift-wrapped box serving as the sculpture’s base, a flurry of butterflies erupt from the top, forming a mesmerizing multicolored cloud. Setting the stage for the gallery’s overall tone and style, “Gift of Life” stands out as the type of one-of-a-kind, vibrant works of luxury art that can only be experienced in-person at an Eden Gallery location.

Housing cutting-edge contemporary art while providing insight into the rich and diverse art history of the neighborhood, Eden’s New York City gallery spaces have become urban attractions of the neighborhoods while also setting the precedent for Eden’s assortment of sister galleries. All six of Eden’s galleries regularly exhibit artwork from over 26 distinguished artists from across the globe. Several of these artists are exclusive to Eden Gallery, including David Kracov, Angelo Accardi, and graffiti art sensation, Alec Monopoly. One of the world’s most soughtafter celebrity graffiti artists, Alec Monopoly’s work gained notoriety after the 2008 market crash. Featuring the cartoon mascot of Uncle Pennybags, as well as characters like Richie Rich and Uncle Scrooge, his work is a tongue-incheek commentary on contemporary capitalism and modern life. Growing up in New York City with a classically trained painter as a mother, Alec Monopoly is a lifelong artist. Eschewing formal training for his pursuit of creating street art, he has established himself as one of the foremost artists of this genre. Alec’s unique style takes a lighthearted approach, rather than the typical grim slant of street art, differentiating him from his contemporaries and giving his art a relatable quality.

Alec Monopoly’s unconventional art appeals to the masses as bright illustrations of societal satire. Materials like newspaper clippings, spray paint, stencils, and varnish bring his vision to life, not only as street murals but on luxury items such as painted Hermès and Louis Vuitton handbags. Alec Monopoly graffiti art can be seen in urban environments across the world, including in a dedicated art gallery in Miami’s Setai Hotel. He has also been the focus of several of Eden Gallery’s past events, including 2019’s Mykonos event, $PF Monopoly, and last month’s exhibition in Aspen, which featured custom ice sculptures and Aspen-themed paintings. Eden Gallery’s exclusive collections focus on luxury art that is aligned with today’s high fashion brands. The galleries are situated in historic neighborhoods and streets that are synonymous with luxury shopping. In many locations, including Madison Ave and Mykonos’s Nammos Village, Eden Gallery is neighbors with stores like Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès.

While the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent economic crisis have seen many businesses close, Eden Gallery has continued to see success, with several of the larger galleries remaining open for the duration of 2020. In fact, with plans for expansion in 2021/2022, Eden is committed to bringing its vision to at least two other major cities: Dubai and Las Vegas. Eden Gallery Dubai plans to open its doors in summer 2021, at The Dubai Mall, notoriously known as the largest shopping mall in the world. The Vegas location is projected to follow later at the end of the year, making its home at the Encore at Wynn Las Vegas. Committed to remaining at the forefront of contemporary art culture, Eden Gallery aspires to create unforgettable experiences for art lovers everywhere. With exhibitions and events designed to inspire and transform, Eden Gallery is fast establishing itself as the main player in the world of contemporary art both in the U.S. and worldwide.

GEORGE & THE SECRET LIFE OF TROJA

Windless days in the mountains with a reflective lake in the background is a rare sight. However, it’s not something you think about when you have a dog staring at you.

The wild Norwegian fjords unleashing their true self. The Norwegian fjords are often chaotic. Wind, rain, and huge waves. But one thing about Norway is that the places with the worst weather can also be the most stunning places during great weather days.

Running wild in the ferns is one of Troja’s favorite things to do, the feeling of ferns brushing against her fur is a therapeutic experience.

In the moment and one with nature, a form of art few have mastered besides dogs.

As the sun was setting, Troja spotted a herd of deer in the distance. The Irish setter breed is made for hunting, something one can truly notice during hikes where there are a lot of wild animals.

Spring and Summer are Troja’s favorite parts of the year as she finally can enjoy swimming in the lake and sprint around on the sand. However, do not be fooled by the high temperatures, in the background you can still spot some snow and the water comes running down from the mountains into the lake, making it ice cold yet refreshing.

Every time you gaze lovingly into your dogs’ eyes, its levels of oxytocin — the “attachment hormone” — go up. And so do yours. Oxytocin has long been referred to as “the love hormone” and the “cuddle hormone,” because we (and our pets) release it when we hug, touch, or look lovingly into someone’s eyes.

We hiked to the top of a mountain on a summer night, we laid down on the soft moss to enjoy the warm light from the sunset while taking a nap on the soft moss. One of those moments that can’t be bought.

Angels appear in many different forms, one of them has four paws and a wagging tail.

NOBISKRUG CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO

f you ask anyone on the dock to name one of the most striking superyachts ever built, the likelihood is Sailing Yacht A will repeatedly surface. Delivered in 2017, it remains the largest private sail-assisted motor yacht in the world and arguably the most iconic. At 143m in length and designed inside and out by starchitect Philippe Starck, it is also the poster child for what German shipyard Nobiskrug has become world renowned for – breaking the mold of superyacht build capabilities to achieve what others thought to be impossible. Sailing Yacht A captures the imagination from every angle, with near invisible windows that give the yacht a cocoon-like futuristic appeal. She is as vast as she is unique, from her wave piercing bow to her numerous drop-down balconies and backlit name plate. But aesthetics aside, she is a feat of technological ingenuity with much of her innovation hidden from view. At 12,600 GT she instantly became one of the most impressive PYC superyachts ever built. She houses an underwater observation pod, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and stateof- the-art navigation systems. Her striking three masts are the tallest and most highly loaded freestanding composite structures in the world – the mainmast towers a whopping 100 meters above the waterline. And her steel hull and superstructure are formed from hightech composite fashion plates, a technology that Nobiskrug has pioneered and developed over the past 15 years. “Born from the owner’s desire to push the boundaries of engineering and challenge the status quo of the industry, Sailing Yacht A is undoubtedly one of the most visionary projects Nobiskrug has ever been involved in,” commented the shipyard at the time of the yacht’s launch.

©Stefano Geraci

©Isabella Puiatti

What Nobiskrug has managed to cement over the course of its 20 years building superyachts is an individuality that few other shipyards can compete with. Since 92.4m Tatoosh, the first superyacht ever built by Nobiskrug (and still one of the most famous), Nobiskrug has focused unwaveringly on realizing owners’ dreams. From this central point, it has carved out a niche in the industry as the go-to yard for highperformance, aesthetically arresting and wholly innovative yachts. And the ground-breaking deliveries just keep on coming.

©Peter Seyfferth

Flanked by a striking glass façade Artefact, which launched in March 2020, makes a bold and radical architectural statement. At a whopping 2,999GT she is the world’s largest 80m yacht in terms of volume. Like many of Nobiskrug’s custom new builds, the owner is just as visionary as the yacht. The entrepreneurial owner of Artefact was intent on building a head-turning superyacht that took inspiration from nature. This aim was realized with a hybrid propulsion system, 23 square meters of solar cells, variable-speed generators and lithium batteries. A dynamic positioning system and wastewater system also help to make the IMO Tier-III compliant yacht as environmentally sympathetic as is currently possible. For Nobiskrug, when it comes to ocean conservation and demonstrating a pioneering practice towards new technology that can help to reduce the harmful effects of yachting, it brings its ‘A’ game every time. One of its most recent initiatives is the collaboration with Yacht Club de Monaco to develop the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index. Launched in September 2020 as part of Planetary Health Week, its aim is to measure the environmental impact of yacht design and use, and in doing so, to become the leading air pollution rating system for yachts.

© Francisco Martinez

The hope is that the Sea Index, which provides transparent ecological ratings for superyachts within propulsion systems, energy recovery chemicals, waste and water, will in time grow to become the global industry standard. It has been developed as a customized online tool that enables industry participants to carry out their own ‘no obligation’ emissions assessment. If their results satisfy the relevant criteria, they will be able to request an audit with a view to obtaining a SEA Flag and a SEA rating. “The next decade will be decisive for the future of our planet,” says Prince Albert II, Prince of Monaco and President of the Yacht Club de Monaco. “Climate change is one of our biggest challenges. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, the next ten years must focus on oceanography to underpin our scientific knowledge, encourage technical innovation and promote the emergence of new solutions to reverse - we hope - the cycle of decline in ocean health.” For Nobiskrug, the SEA Index represents taking one step closer to achieving what it started long ago – innovation on a grand scale. ©Francisco Martinez

MOONEN YACHTS THE MAGIC OF MOONEN

I

n the last year, many luxury brands have taken a hit due to the onset of COVID-19 and as we’ve seen, many businesses had to close their doors entirely. So, in the face of this global pandemic, how has Dutch superyacht builder, Moonen Yachts, managed to not only stay afloat, but in fact grow the business? We are in conversation with the Managing Director of Moonen Yachts, Marianne Hendriks, to get her insights on the success, current yachts in build and the future direction of the shipyard. What has been the major challenge for Moonen in this past year? On the one hand, I see the pandemic as a challenge, but on the other hand, we’ve proven that it’s possible to successfully sell yachts online. We were very successful in 2020. We sold two yachts last year, both entirely online. With 36 meter KOKORO (YN199), we arranged everything by phone, video, Whatsapp or email and all decisions were made online. The owner never saw the yacht in person until she was delivered to her final destination! It is definitely possible, it just requires a different approach. During the pandemic, people have become used to communicating over Zoom or Teams, so it became easier to use these tools. When you build yachts on speculation like we do, there’s always a yacht in production which we can show to the customer, even online. It’s very important for many people to see something tangible, to experience the quality of the product rather than just looking at the drawings on a piece of paper.

In general, the pandemic has opened up new opportunities; people are searching for a place where they can feel safe and secure with their family and friends and if you are on board your own yacht, it’s your own secure bubble. Certainly it is not an easy period, but I think we should remain optimistic. Since 2019 Moonen has been under new ownership, how is the shipyard travelling now? We are doing well! In 2020, we sold two 36 meter Moonen Martinique yachts. The first yacht M/Y KOKORO, was delivered to her owner earlier this year and the second project YN200, will be completed by the end of this year for a repeat customer in the United States. Further, we have two more yachts in production, a 36 meter and a 34 meter. The enthusiasm and encouragement of the new Australian company owners, Matthew and Louise Baxter, in combination with the newly appointed management has lifted the spirits of all our employees and has pushed the brand to a worldwide top position. At Moonen we feel the support of the Baxter’s on a daily basis. Through their network and passion for yachting we are able to ramp up production and enter new markets. Negotiations and sales are all done by our team in the Netherlands, but Matthew and Louise are more than willing to introduce us to potential buyers. In addition to Australia, Moonen finds customers in the US, Middle-East and of course Europe. We build local, we act global. Since the new management was appointed, what fundamental changes have taken place and what is the strategy to secure the future for Moonen Yachts? Last June, when I was appointed Managing Director and Nicky van Zon Technical Director, we developed

Moonen 110

a short, mid and long term strategy. Together we focus on the shipyards’ future and welfare. We still specialise in building semi-custom steel-aluminium superyachts in the 30-50m range and we continue to lay hulls before the client arrives. This part of our strategy has not changed, but we are no longer concentrating on refits or building full custom yachts. Of course, if a client comes to us with a custom project, we are open to discuss, but our main goal is to build yachts on existing platforms. Building on spec on a proven platform greatly reduces delivery time, improves the quality and still leaves the client plenty of room for personalisation. In terms of refit, we will only take on yachts from the Moonen Yachts fleet, no other brands. The Moonen Martinique is a popular model, why did you decide to bring Moonen 110, a more classical yacht to the market? That’s an interesting question, but the answer is clear. Our strategy behind this decision is as follows. Out of the entire Caribbean line, the 36 meter Martinique is certainly highly requested. In the same line we have the 42 meter Marquis with a slightly different exterior design and this also gains a lot of interest. However our classics, which are recognised by many by their typical flared bow, like the signature Moonen 97 and Moonen 84, still receive a lot of attention. These people want to build something more contemporary, but with classic lines, so we’re offering them the Moonen 110. The key features of this yacht like durability and seaworthiness are the same as in the Martinique and Marquis, they’re all designed by René van der Velden Yacht Design, however the exterior lines are different and therefore will attract a different audience. The production of Moonen 110 will not stop the production of Martinique, both strengthen the shipyards’ portfolio and they complement each other.

What do you think about the future of boat shows, given that some Dutch shipyards are calling for their radical reform? It’s hard to tell at the moment whether boat shows will be the same in the future. I strongly believe that a change is needed and if a change can be generated by this pandemic then that would be good. Let me explain why. The entire superyacht industry exists of buyers and suppliers. The shipyards are focused on buyers and the suppliers on the shipyards. So both are needed, but do not necessarily have to be present at the same yacht show at the same time. Potential buyers go to shows like the Monaco Yacht Show to visit and eventually purchase a yacht. The yachts are on display including all the equipment and supplies, so in fact the owner sees the ‘whole package’. This means that the shipyard is not just representing itself at the show, but also shows all the brands of equipment that have been used to produce the yacht. From that perspective and in my opinion, there is no need to showcase the equipment separately at the same show. It also makes the show too busy, a little distracting. The owners, who definitely drive the business, should be treated to the best possible experience. This approach could lead to a smaller event, but more exclusive and better tailored to the owner’s needs. Supplier events such as METS in Amsterdam are a great example of where the supplier industry has a major focus and podium. This is where the shipyards should go as a buyer. Does Moonen Yachts have the resources to research and develop its own knowledge of sustainable yachting? Given the new Tier III regulations that are fully focused on emission free and green yachts, this is now a hot topic that should be on the agenda of every shipyard. In terms of sustainability we are not at the forefront right now of building the most “green yachts”, however we certainly take the environment into consideration and we also adapt to rulings to comply with all applicable standards. Our research and development department will investigate options for the use of diesel-electric propulsion systems, hybrid propulsion, or reuse of energy on board, but at this moment, as we build semi-custom yachts that are built on pre-engineered platforms, we do not have hybrid systems yet. In the future, when there is more demand for hybrid yachts, or in case the regulations force us, we will of course adjust our strategy, investigate the topic and offer this solution to our clients.

What has been your best day at Moonen Yachts? I think it was on the 9th of October last year, when we launched M/Y KOKORO. I hadn’t slept well the night before because I was so stressed. We had all put so much effort into building this beautiful piece of art and in my dreams she fell out of the crane three times. We have a very experienced team here, so of course everything went very smoothly. I remember looking at all our employees standing at the dock at the quay and feeling a deep sense of satisfaction at having fulfilled a customer’s dream. It was the first yacht that the yard had built with Matthew and Louise Baxter and also under my guidance, so that was a very special moment and I definitely consider it my best day so far.

FEADSHIP PROJECT 2024 PURE PLEASURES

F

eadship and Nauta Design have unveiled a cool opening for fast decision makers with the 72.60-metre Project 2024. All the investments in time and resources have been made for the core engineering and naval architecture on a Feadship that can be ready for the 2024 summer season. Project 2024 responds to requests from owners looking to enjoy Feadship safety and comfort in the shortest timeframe without being closely involved in the technical aspects of a custom build. These people also have no wish to compromise on the bespoke premium quality choices that Feadship offers in terms of on-board facilities. Feadship and Nauta Design have developed a warm relationship working on previous builds and Project 2024 integrates their shared expertise in an exclusive design dedicated to enjoying close proximity to the sea. A prime example is the spectacular transom with foldout side wings, an island playground with a 3.3-metre pool, seating zones with sun & shade and steps into the sea. The main deck above is connected with gently sloping stairs, making it safe to have children playing on the platform and in the pool while the adults keep a restful eye from above.

The beach club continues forward into the lower deck interior, with an extra lounge area and another fold-down terrace on the starboard side. More room for relaxation is created once the tender and toys are launched, while steam showers and a sauna create an irresistible wellness area.

a full-height food lift cover all decks. The design for Project 2024 envisages sleeping twelve guests in the master stateroom, a VIP and four guest suites. Clients can arrange things differently if desired, one of countless options that include adding a helicopter platform to the upper deck and designing the entire interior style.

Another alluring aspect of Project 2024 is the way forward areas are linked to optimise the owner experience. The full-beam main deck master suite is an oasis of privacy with a giant bedroom, his & her walk-ins and bathrooms, and a lounge with a balcony. CASAMIGOS & WILLAM SONOMA A PREMIUM PARTNERSHIP

W

illiams Sonoma and Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal have launched premium glassware, bar tools, and entertaining accessories perfect for home entertaining. The now co-branded products will be added to the current assortment of premium cocktail mixes, salts, and gift sets. Casamigos cofounder Rande Gerber gives insight on the exciting collaboration. What was the origin of the Williams Sonoma collaboration? Rande Gerber: Twelve years ago, I created a drink mix company called Midnight Bar Collection. It was a huge success for many years. The company manufacturing my mixers was then bought by a larger company that could not keep up the quality I needed and my customers expected, so I discontinued the line. Recently, when Williams Sonoma approached me to collaborate and to do this again, I jumped at the opportunity. Describe the different lines Casamigos is launching with Williams Sonoma. We launched the collaboration with four premium cocktail mixes and three cocktail rimming salts. The mixes are inspired by cocktails we’ve curated ourselves. They are handcrafted in small batches and are designed to be enjoyed simply by adding Casamigos Tequila or Mezcal. The original line includes our version of house favorites including a signature margarita, grapefruit orange paloma, blackberry basil smash and ginger lime mule. We also have holiday flavors and a line of sleek glassware and bar tools.

How did you decide Williams Sonoma was the right partner for a range of mixers, salts and barware? When collaborating with Williams Sonoma, we wanted to create something special, that we would want to drink. Casamigos is a lifestyle and Williams Sonoma is similar in that regard. Neither company settles for anything but the best. It took 700 samples to perfect Casamigos Tequila. What was the process like to refine the mixers and salts to be a perfect fit to Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal? We collaborated, perfected and tasted every mix and salt to make sure it was what we wanted before we bottled it. How did you select the flavor and taste profiles for the mixers and salts? We wanted to create a flavor profile that everyone could enjoy. The line launched with signature cocktail flavors including a margarita, paloma, blackberry basil smash and ginger mule. Each mix is special because they’re handcrafted in small batches and inspired by cocktails we’ve curated ourselves. Our fall flavors feature a pumpkin spice mix and cranberry mix that are great for the holiday season.

What inspired your design for the Casamigos-branded barware? Design is very personal for me. I wanted to create a line of glassware and bar tools that I would want to use and feel good in your hand. Everything from the shaker to the coasters are what I want at my bar. How did Casamigos quietly become the fastest growing tequila? We have people drinking Casamigos that never drank tequila before as well as customers that switched from vodka and other types of liquor and are now fans of Casamigos. They love and appreciate the authenticity and quality of our brand. The fact that we are the fastest growing ultrapremium tequila in the country is based on the quality, taste, smoothness and numerous awards we have received from tequila experts who all want and appreciate the best. What makes Casamigos different from all other brands? We made Casamigos for us to drink and don’t follow any rules or look at other

brands. We do everything in house and do things our own way. What’s next for the brand? We are always thinking ahead and have some ideas in the works to expands our brand. We are really proud of what we have done and are focused on the continued growth of our Tequila and Mezcal. When hosting, what are your tips on gifting? How can you make your gifts memorable? Have a gift for all your guests, wrap them nicely and include a personal note. Gifts you give should always be something someone wants or needs. The Casamigos x Williams Sonoma cocktail mixes and salts make the perfect gift. The Williams Sonoma collaboration makes it easy for anyone to be their own bartender at home. Which Williams Sonoma x Casamigos products will you be using on repeat? All of them!

NIC ROLDAN EMBRACING OPPORTUNITY

Photography by Nick Mele

N

icolas Roldan was born on December 4, 1982 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and is an American polo player with an 8-goal handicap rating. Currently, he is Captain of the American Polo Team and is the leading American polo player. Nic is the youngest ever polo player to win the U.S. Polo Open with the Escue Team at the age of 15. His home base is in the U.S. equestrian epicentre Wellington, Florida. Elevated: With all the changes we experienced over the last year, how was playing polo different during the pandemic? Nic Roldan: In 2020, our main winter season was stopped in its tracks and the spring season consequently also did not happen. We then started playing in Aspen last summer and the 2021 the season did take place. Naturally the biggest difference was the lack of spectators. Polo embraces its social side and it was weird not only having no spectators, but having to deter people from coming. There was a definite lack of occasion and ambiance and it felt a little like we were just playing practices as a result. Now that restrictions are starting to be lifted in the U.S., what are you most excited about in reference to polo returning back to normal? Having spectators, friends and family back and being able to travel again! What upcoming tournaments are you most looking forward to for 2021? I’m spending the summer playing at Aspen Valley Polo Club, CO, then return to Wellington, FL to play the Fall season there. Just before Christmas I return to Aspen to play in the Snow Polo which is always a magical way to end the year.

One of your newest ventures, High Goal Gin, is taking the luxury spirit industry by storm. How has the Polo lifestyle influenced the creation of High Goal Gin? I played in the UK for several years and regularly would meet up with a couple of friends at a local hotel that offers some 200 gins! This fascinated me, could there really be such a difference in taste? I started to learn more about the spirit and gained a real appreciation for it. This was definitely the seed that inspired me when later I had the opportunity together with Matti Anttila and Diego Urrutia to create High Goal Gin. Polo and gin have been intertwined for a long time from the days of British Empire as it’s the perfect drink to enjoy on a summers afternoon whilst watching polo and it was a high time there was an elevated American offering. High Goal Gin’s smooth, light and refreshing taste incorporating Meyer lemon and mint make it uniquely standout and attract a new age consumer of gin. I’m particularly proud that often I get feedback from people saying “I don’t normally like or drink gin but I like High Goal Gin”. What is your favorite way to drink High Goal Gin? My favorite High Goal Gin cocktail is called “The Roldan” and it’s made with muddled strawberries (or other berries) and High Goal Gin. However, a unique feature of High Goal Gin is that is can also be enjoyed on the rocks with a slice of lemon and sprig of mint.

Along with being the Top American Polo Player, you’re also an avid golfer. How has your recent collaboration with PXG elevated your golf experience? I love golf, it’s my way to relax and get away from it all, although “relax” may not always be the right word as it can be so frustrating at times! Having the opportunity to create this partnership with PXG has felt like I’m a kid in a candy store. PXG are an amazing company in so many way, I love their beliefs and as an extremely passionate golfer to be supported by such an incredible brand is an honor. Mr Parsons drive (pun intended) is an inspiration, seeing all he has created. Mrs Parsons does an amazing job not just with the apparel but her eye for detail in the design of Scottsdale National is very similar to my taste. It’s pretty phenomenal seeing all PXG is and stands for. For me the the initial fitting experience was phenomenal and such fun, way above any fitting experience I’ve ever had and all round their team members are in class of their own, above and beyond in every way, 5* does them no justice, they are 6 or 7*. From a playing point of view I really love their drivers as the reduction in dispersion is easy to see. Where are a few of your favorite places to golf? My home club is Banyan in Wellington, FL. I’m very lucky to have such an amazing course 5 minutes from my house. In Aspen, CO my favorite course is Maroon Creek and then I was fortunate enough to be invited by Mr and Mrs Parsons to Scottsdale National which, was a whole new golf education. I also got to play their “Bad Little-Nine” course with it’s course designer David Khan at night which was one of the most fun golf experiences I’ve ever had and PXG would say “insane”.

You have been developing real estate properties alongside your mother, Dee, and together have established quite an impressive portfolio. What is the most exciting part about developing these incredible properties from the ground up? There’s different phases that are exciting, starting off with a blank canvas right through to ultimately seeing the product, handing over ownership to the new owners and seeing them making it their home. If I’m really honest, the whole process excites me. For example, each morning I scour the real estate sites seeing what has hit the market, what opportunities there are to be made etc. In a way it’s a bug that has got under my skin and at the moment I have several projects I’m creating with my team. What has been your development thus far?

favorite

That is tough to say, as each has something unique and special and I have learned a lesson from each one which I’ve taken away. What upcoming real estate projects are you currently working on? I’m working on two properties at the moment in the Palm Beach Polo & Country Club, FL. The first is a 3 bedroom condo on Polo Island which I will completely remodel and update. Then earlier in the R&G Design and Development was formed between Tim Gannon, CoFounder of Outback Steakhouse and myself. Tim was is passionate about polo having won the U.S. Open 5 times and is a good friend. It’s an amazing opportunity for me to partner with someone who in turn I can learn so much from. We are very excited to be working on our first joint project on Blue Cypress Lane, a 5,000 sq ft, 5 bedroom spec house exemplifying the perfect indoor/outdoor living environment. Blue Cypress Lane is the same street on which I earlier buildt another spec house which sold this year and I intend to start a trend!

TEREMANA SMALL BATCH TEQUILA

C

reated in a small town in the highlands of Jalisco, founders Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Ken Austin and Jenna Fagnan worked with a Mexican family-owned distillery to build a unique home on the grounds solely for Teremana, Destilería Teremana de Agave. Here they craft Teremana with a love for great tequila made the right way, in small batches, by hand. Crafted amidst the highest peaks of the Jalisco Highlands, every step of Teremana’s tequila-making process is meticulously done to create delicious tequila that truly honors the land it comes from. Utilizing local businesses and practices allows them to create their sustainable ultra premium tequila. Global entertainment icon and entrepreneurial force Dwayne Johnson explains that “after years of hard work, this is truly a dream come true. My team and I are committed to bringing you the highest in quality tequila, because quality, the people, the land and legacy are what matter most. From all of us here at Teremana, we invite you to come have a drink!”

Teremana combines two words that are meaningful: ‘Tere’ derived from the Latin ‘terra’ meaning earth, and ‘Mana’, the Polynesian word meaning spirit. Teremana is the “Spirit of the Earth’. Teremana is created in small batches, using only 100% mature blue weber agave from the Highlands of Jalisco. Their agave is only harvested when it reaches peak maturity, often taking between six to eight years. Teremana is distilled by using small handmade copper pot stills created by a local artisan. The nature of handmade copper stills dates back to the days of traditional tequila making and produces a cleaner, brighter tequila. At Teremana, sustainability is taken very seriously, and they work to reduce their impact on the land. They take the leftover agave fibers from production to create a natural compost that is used as an organic fertilizer for the agave fields. Also, a state-of-the-art water filtration system is utilized to clean the waste-water leftover from production. At Teremana, they will continue to strive to reduce their footprint and to take care of their home for generations to come. Teremana is crafted as an ultra-premium sipping tequila to be served neat or on the rocks. Teremana also creates the best tasting tequila cocktails such as the Traditional Margarita, Palomas or The People’s Margarita, all the way to a Teremana Reposado old fashioned.

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY LONGBRANCH BOURBON

L

ongbranch is a collaboration between Matthew McConaughey and Master Distiller Eddie Russell that dares to think about what can be. Inspired by McConaughey’s Kentucky and Texas roots, this rare smallbatch Kentucky bourbon is refined with Texas Mesquite and oak charcoals – a unique method that deepens the flavor and complexity of the whiskey.

Co-Creator Matthew McConaughey in partnership with the brand, the video spot taps into the power of wonderment and curiosity by inviting audiences to join Matthew as he questions what is and dares to think about what can be. Both optimistic and clever, the theme is a true testament to the authenticity of this campaign and aims to inspire, challenge conventional thinking, and ignite exploration.

To create Longbranch’s signature flavor, McConaughey and Russell spent countless hours sharing notes, then, after two years of testing, perfected a proprietary process that combines two separate charcoal filtration methods to give Longbranch a smooth and full finish.

“The question ‘what if?’ can be a powerful one, beckoning us to dig deep and challenge ourselves,” said McConaughey. “A few years ago, we asked ourselves what if we put a Texas spin on Kentucky Straight Bourbon, and that curiosity led to the birth of Longbranch, my co-creation with Master Distiller Eddie Russell. Our curiosities guide us through life and allow us to turn our ‘what ifs’ into ‘that’s it,’ and we’re hoping this bourbon and our new campaign inspires others to do just that.”

The bourbon brand’s first-ever global creative campaign entitled “Wonder What If” brings the brand’s message to life. Directed by Longbranch

The self-directed video spot features McConaughey sitting in a field with nothing but Longbranch in his hand and a mind free to wander and ponder life’s great questions. McConaughey’s innately curious spirit was the impetus for creating Longbranch Bourbon, an 8-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon made in small batches refined with Texas Mesquite, American Oak charcoals, subtle hints of smoky sweetness and flavors of caramel, pear, and hints of citrus. “Wonder What If” highlights the rich story-telling that McConaughey has brought to the brand as Creative Director, creating a campaign that is equal parts culturally curious and artistic. Taking inspiration from the creation story of Longbranch, the campaign brings to life the quest of discovery and embracing unfamiliar experiences in the pursuit of discovering something new.

KATE HUDSON KING ST. VODKA

A

ctress and entrepreneur Kate Hudson is making her mark in the world of ultrapremium spirits with her premiere liquor brand, King St. Vodka. Inspired by good times with friends spent over Dirty Vodka Martinis, Kate couldn’t find a vodka that was just right for her palate, or one that was founded by a woman, so she made one herself. “I have always found the spirits industry fascinating, and I love Dirty Vodka Martinis. The creative side of me thought it would be a fun challenge to develop a vodka for my palate,

and in a beautiful package that I would love to have on my bar and share with friends. The businessperson in me is now looking forward to the challenge of building a brand in an entirely new industry,” says Hudson. “After a particularly long day, I decided to host an impromptu cocktail party with my closest friends. As I prepared to whip up a batch of dirty vodka martinis I surveyed my bar, but I wasn’t 100 percent happy with my options. Then I wondered, ‘Are any of these vodkas founded by women?’ I did some research, they weren’t. So, I decided to make my own just the way I like it!”

Crafted in Santa Barbara, King St. Vodka was founded by Kate and her partner David Kanbar, Co-Creator of Skinnygirl. Created under the watchful eye of Master Distiller, Ian Cutler, King St. Vodka uses GMO-free corn and alkaline water, producing a final yield that is gluten free with a hint of sweet vanilla flavor. Distilled seven times and then filtered, King St. Vodka is extraordinarily pure. Made from the best ingredients, every sip is clean, smooth, and created to be enjoyed with good company. Kate takes pride in the creation process, and attributes the high standard of the final product to taking their time in ensuring quality above all.

“I find that a lot of times in business, people rush something to get ahead,” Kate says. “And they end up failing because the quality isn’t there. As David says, the quality has to speak for itself.” King St. Vodka is made with alkaline water and is 7x distilled, making this hand-crafted vodka from Santa Barbara, CA incredibly smooth. King St. is also gluten-free and is made from non-GMO corn. Inspired by memories of founder Kate Hudson’s former home on King Street in New York City, King St. Vodka is a true labor of love checked against the highest standards of quality and taste.

LENNY KRAVITZ RAISE VIBRATION

WRITTEN BY ALLISON KUGEL

Photography by Mathieu Bitton

T

wenty-nine years after releasing his debut album, Lenny Kravitz is still letting love rule, but with an eye towards societal strife that continues to go unchecked. The multi-Grammy award winning musician brings forth a conscious body of work with Raise Vibration, his eleventh studio album. The first single off the Raise Vibration album, It’s Enough, is a battle cry against corporate greed, political corruption and racism. Kravitz switches gears with his follow up single, Low, exploring the perils of his near-mythical sensuality with intonations alluding to his past intimate relationships. For Lenny Kravitz, the art of the story is paramount, while pop music trends are immaterial. He tells stories through his writing, vocals, and the multitude of instruments he has mastered over the years. Musically, Raise Vibration is an eclectic blend of the kind of stylistic rock n’ roll-funk sound that Kravitz is known for, with subtle nods to vintage R&B and choruses that sway towards pop appeal. His music puts you in a trancelike groove and defies all genre. Lenny Kravitz, the man, is a veritable roadmap of his past experiences. From making his way in an industry that doesn’t always value individuality, to making his way in a world that begged to define and categorize him by race and ethnicity in his formative years, he wears his memories on his sleeve and they inform much of his artistic expression. Our conversation surprised me as it took a more intimate turn. He and I delved into matters of spirituality, racial identity, family and the rituals that aide him in creating his eclectic sound. We were very much on the same page as he shared his feelings about everything from racism and societal injustice to his personal spiritual journey, his family and his music. Allison Kugel: You’ve said you were born to make music. Can you share your earliest memory where you became aware that music was going to be your life? Lenny Kravitz: For me the pivotal moment was going to see The Jackson 5, live at Madison Square Garden, when I was six years old. I was in the first grade. I had already been intently listening to their record. But I went to the show, and the next morning that was it! I was completely sold. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. What was it about The Jackson 5 that resonated with you? Number one was the music. The music was incredible. The music that was made by these kids was not elementary, it wasn’t bubble gum as they used to say back then about young artists. This was very sophisticated, high-level music with the best musicians, the best producers, and [Michael] was one of the best singers who ever lived and who ever will live. The level of interpretation and feeling and vocal range… it was a perfect storm for me, the way everything came together. On top of the music, the presentation and the showmanship were top level and soulful, and these were people that I could identify with.

They looked like me. I had the same hair… there were so many things that came together in my mind. When and where do you feel most creative and musical? “It could be anywhere, but it’s in the studio, so wherever that may be. My studio is in the Bahamas. It’s my favorite place to work; it’s my workshop. When I’m in the studio and I’ve got all my equipment and all my instruments, and everything is set up, that’s the magical place for me. It’s where I’m comfortable and where I can flow. When I’m inspired and in that flow, I can move. I jump around from instrument to instrument, and it’s wonderful. You are such a true musician in every sense of the word. Aside from singing, you play several instruments, and you write and produce. When you record your music, is it all you doing everything in the studio? Are you recording all of the instrumentals in addition to doing your vocals and producing? “es, I start on drums normally and then I go to a guitar, a bass, another guitar, keyboard, percussion… I keep layering as though I was painting, until my picture is complete. Your album is called Raise Vibration and the first single, It’s Enough, is a call-to-action anthem about political corruption and social and racial injustice. Was writing It’s Enough a form of therapy for you, and a way of turning hopelessness into empowerment? I react to the world. I actually recorded the song twice. I was trying to find the direction for the record. The way the song started, the first version of It’s Enough was a full-on guitar, bass, drum, punk rock song. It had an angry tone to it, because that felt like the proper reaction. And then I thought about it and ended up changing it and finding this groove, which is the polar opposite of what it started out as. I found that by being calm and by being centered and by being quiet, it was more effective. It brought out a whole new feeling in the song, and I think it enables the listener to hear the lyrics even better. And you feel it brings more of a positive energy, as opposed to the original version, which would have brought forth anger. Absolutely. I’m all about positive energy. I’m stating the facts, but in the end, I always take an optimistic and positive tone that, ‘People, we can do this!’ We can do it. It’s just a matter of waking up. What does the title of your album, Raise Vibration, mean to you? And how do you raise your vibration? Do you meditate? Do you Pray? It means exactly that; waking up. I meditate, I pray, I try to be still, I try to be quiet… and listen. It means having the desire to learn, to improve, and to face my faults and learn from them. I’m always looking to go higher. And taking as much ego out of myself as possible.”

Jojo Anavim, Lifesaver, 2020 Collage, foil, and acrylic on canvas, 30 x 40 in.

Jojo Anavim New York City based artist Jojo Anavim has established his body of work stemming from a background in graphic design and brand development. Previously a creative consultant for brands such as W Hotels, and Universal Music Group, Anavim crossed over fulltime to fine art in 2013. His work continually employs bold color palettes, acrylic paint, oil stick, collage scraps, found items and advertisements Anavim has been collecting since his childhood. He is known for elevating the mundane by transforming everyday items into objects of transcendence. The paintings oscillate freely between playful and subversive. Triggered by his fascination with a child-like consciousness, Anavim challenges the viewer to not only see something beautiful, but feel something as well. As a child (until age 15) Anavim enrolled in art classes taught by Disney animator Al Baruch, creator of the legendary characters Captain Hook and Mighty Mouse. Anavim credits Baruch with instilling a creative confidence that led him to embrace art as more than

a hobby early in his life. Anavim went on to study graphic art at Hunter College. Much of Anavim’s work depict the nostalgia of the brands and packaging he was surrounded by during this time, down to the LifeSavers his grandmother would always carry in her purse. Anavim’s artworks are part of permanent collections in museums and hotels around the globe, including Dream’s Downtown and Midtown Hotel, New York, NY; Coca-Cola Archives Museum, Atlanta, GA; New York Yankees City Seats Collection, New York, NY; and Surf Lodge Hotel, Montauk, NY. Anavim is also recognized for his commissions for NBA players, business moguls and top-charting musicians including Amar’e Stoudemire, Seth McFarlane, Selena Gomez, Sheldon Adelson, Paris Hilton, Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, and Daymond John. Anavim’s work has been covered by global media publications including The New York Times, American Art Collector, Business Insider and Forbes - all highlighting the success of his career.

OIL NUT BAY PARADISE FOUND

WRITTEN BY SCARLETT STEER

O

n the eastern tip of Virgin Gorda, in the coveted North Sound neighborhood of the British Virgin Islands, lies a place where life is spent in perfect harmony with the ocean tides. Where world-class architecture rests against a backdrop of white sandy beaches, rolling hills and consciously preserved terrain. Spread across 400 exquisite acres and entirely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, Oil Nut Bay is a luxury, multi-generational community offering freehold property ownership and vacation villa rental in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Accessible only by water or air, Oil Nut Bay is an exclusive, protected paradise for those seeking somewhere safe, stable and settled in this upside down world to call home. There are countless spectacular locations across the world dotted with indulgent escapes. What truly sets Oil Nut Bay apart from comparable properties? A couple of things. A Fearless Leader After breaking his neck at 29 years of age the entire direction of David Victor Johnson’s life changed. In a matter of months, the Oil Nut Bay founder was transformed from being one of the most prolific single-family home developers in the Midwest to a man committed to creating unique generational communities in harmony with nature – one of a kind, one at a time. David and his wife Pam sailed to 13 countries in six years on epic, Caribbean-wide search for the ideal locale for his 40th development, grand finale and final home. Johnson has written his own rule book and in doing so set a standard that has paved the way for fellow out-ofthe-box thinkers and creators, people committed to organic design, sustainable living, the honest and respectful use of natural materials and their placement in the landscape. His pièce de résistance is Oil Nut Bay and there is absolutely nothing on earth quite like it.

“Diversity Is The Magic” So claimed late Cultural Historian Thomas Berry. “The greater the diversity, the greater the perfection”. We could not agree more. One of the many things that sets Oil Nut Bay apart from comparable luxury properties is its varied topography. The entire 400 acres are meticulously divided into several distinct neighborhoods, each with their own identity, atmosphere and mood. From Beach to Ridge, Peninsula to Boulder, Marina to Estate, each community within the community possesses something unique to offer every prospective homeowner and his or her singular vision. When one dreams of owning a home in the Caribbean it makes sense that one’s imaginings include an oceanfront property that enjoys immediate door to shore access. But we challenge you to stand on the dramatic bluffs of our southern shores with the waves thundering beneath you, or in the stillness of the rolling hills that encompass our Estate Lots where peace, privacy and repose take center stage, and not be just a little torn as to which you love the most.

Stress-Free Building Yes, such a thing exists. Building your dream home at Oil Nut Bay is, hand on heart, absolutely not the daunting undertaking that many perceive it to be. Oil Nut Bay’s dedicated Construction company, O’Reilly Consulting & Associates (ORCA), has over a decade of experience working under the guidance of David Johnson. No company has a better understanding of the property’s development process, nor a more established relationship with the finest contractors in the territory. As their sole client, Oil Nut Bay is offered unparalleled service from ORCA and an ORCA Project Manager remains onsite for each and every project. Clients who chose to work with ORCA are able to swerve the roadblocks often associated with building in a foreign country and move through the experience with relative ease. ORCA’s work can be seen throughout all resort core amenity sites, as well nearly every completed villa at Oil Nut Bay. Choose to use your own dream design or one of Oil Nut Bay’s existing plans, each of which is fully customizable. You may also decide to work with one of Oil Nut Bay’s preferred international architects, interior designers or landscape architects, or select your own team with which to partner. Whatever you prefer. Your island. Your canvas. Your home. Political And Economic Stability The BVI is more than just a pretty face. It is an ideal offshore jurisdiction in which to establish a business or private interest. Underpinned by a thriving tourism sector and prosperous offshore financial services center, it features one of the most affluent economies in the Caribbean. With close ties to the US, UK and US Virgin Islands, the fact that the BVI has retained a certain dependency on its formal colonial powers affords it stability with a US-Dollar based economy and no exchange controls. There are also no restrictions on the movement of dollar funds into or out of the country. Investors are drawn by the country’s political stability, tax neutrality, low inflation, respected legal system and effective regulatory framework. A Low-Tax Regime The BVI has long been referred to as a “tax haven” – a label the BVI government takes some pains to avoid lest investors look upon the jurisdiction as a place of tax evasion as opposed to tax avoidance. The latter is legal, the former most certainly not. The BVI is a low-tax jurisdiction offering freedom from income, corporate and personal tax. In addition, there is no withholding tax, sales tax, value added tax, capital gains or transfers tax, estate duty tax, inheritance or succession tax. Property taxes are nominal. Land tax at the rate of $50USD is due to the BVI government annually for any acreage under half an acre. $150USD is charged for the first half to one acre; $50USD for an additional acreage thereafter. House tax is levied annually at the rate of 1.5% of the assessed annual rental value. In practice, annual house taxes will generally be less than $1,000USD for a standard twoto three-bedroom home.

A New World Order The BVI was made for postpandemic travel and investment. Prospective homeowners are now seeking out more remote locales. Ones that occupy spectacular natural surrounds and foster family, wellbeing and meaningful connections with both humankind and the fragile, very beautiful planet upon which we live. The ongoing necessity of remote working and learning will demand that these off-the-grid destinations provide seamless, ceaseless connectivity to the outside world. Oil Nut Bay has such specifics in spades. The property can be reached without having to set foot on a commercial carrier – via a private flight into one of two nearby international airports followed by either private helicopter, seaplane or boat charter directly to our arrival dock and then on to your own secluded villa featuring private amenities, abundant and expansive grounds, and an attentive, sensitive staff. Why else should you make Oil Nut Bay your home? Because you can. Because we care. Because investing in environmental integrity, sustainability and a vision that is good to the land and its people is a powerful legacy to leave.

LES BORDES ESTATE AND GOLF CLUB LIVING ONE’S BEST LIFE IN FRANCE’S ALLURING LOIRE VALLEY

I

f you ask wine connoisseurs to name the most famous wine area in the world, many would cite the brilliant Loire Valley in central France, a UNESCO World Heritage Region. It’s famous for its châteaux, medieval towns, rolling hills and worldclass wines. Kings, queens, dukes and aristocrats travelled here to build their châteaux from as early as the 9th century – that’s why the area is sprinkled with some of France’s most opulent estates. Many of these are just a stone’s throw away from Les Bordes Estate and Golf Club. Neighboring the historic village of Beaugency and approximately 90 minutes south of Paris, Les Bordes is spread across 1,400 acres of the Sologne Forest. It was originally established in 1987 by Baron Marcel Bich, with lanes weaving between the forest, glimpses of red deer, wild boar and pheasants, sweeping lakes and natural clearings. In addition to countless outdoor pursuits for the whole family, the Estate is home to the world renowned Les Bordes Golf Club – a private members golf club which aims to consistently offer the best combined 46 holes of golf in continental Europe. Les Bordes is making it possible for people to be part of a community that radiates connection with each other and the bountiful Loire Valley. The Estate will become a gratifying playground for members and real estate owners, with access to endless activities and adventures at their fingertips. Masterfully designed in a safe and secure environment, they can enjoy fully serviced, hassle-free home ownership year-round.

Adventure abounds at Les Bordes. Some of the amenities include equestrian facilities, walking and cycling trails, and a natural swimming lake with white sand beach. Archery, fishing, and a tennis center are others, and zip lines are coming later this year.

development of new homes in varying styles that remain distinct to the local architecture. Each residence and property has been individually oriented by Michaelis Boyd to get the most from the light and sunshine whilst ensuring optimum energy efficiency.

Les Bordes was created in response to a growing demand for community living centered around wellness and a wholesome, coveted lifestyle. Set amongst a woodland with a variety of natural features, the project is founded on core values of sustainability, respectfully using the unspoiled landscape to create areas for the community to enjoy.

London-based Morpheus & Co are the creatives behind the residential interiors and have designed a variety of furniture collections for future owners, combining tactile and relaxing interiors with biophilic features for a feeling of comfort and inspiration, and immersion into the surrounding environment both inside and out.

Michaelis Boyd, known for their work designing interiors for Soho House (LA, Berlin, Oxfordshire), and The Groucho member’s club in London, were tasked with injecting new, invigorating life into the existing clubhouse and 24 members’ cabins and designing the residential

Red and roe deer roam freely throughout the land. Natural surroundings have an invaluable positive impact on both physical and emotional health, and the Estate has embraced this by creating facilities and services that promote wellness amid Mother Nature’s masterworks.

Chateau Bel Air

Separate from the residential community, Les Bordes Golf Club is exclusively private and governed separately from the rest of the estate. The opening of its highly anticipated second 18-hole course will take place this summer. Named the New Course, it was created by globally acclaimed golf architect Gil Hanse, who authored world top-100 courses Castle Stuart and Ohoopee Match Club as well as the 2016 Rio Olympic Course. The New Course is Hanse’s first project in continental Europe. Lauded for his restoration work including two of the next three US Open venues – The Country Club and The Los Angeles Country Club – Hanse has already completed work on an accompanying 10-hole short course at Les Bordes. Named The Wild Piglet, Golf.com immediately placed it in its top-25 par-3 courses in the world. The recently developed new golf courses join the existing Old Course (Robert von Hagge design), to provide members with a diverse yet complementary array of playing options. Commissioned by Baron Marcel Bich in 1987, the Old Course is one of Europe’s premier golf courses. A tree-lined, par-72 course measuring more than 7,000 yards, it weaves through the Sologne Forest, intertwined with a stunning complex of lakes that offer a sublimely serene setting. Widely considered to be Von Hagge’s masterpiece, the Old Course has been consistently ranked amongst the top three courses in Europe over the past 30 years. In addition to creating the New Course and Wild Piglet, Hanse spent time revitalizing some aspects of the Old Course, reinvigorating the acclaimed layout and enhancing its high quality.

The New Course

In addition to the two 18-hole courses and the par-3 course, the club offers members and their guests’ access to a number of other club facilities. These include driving range, short game practice area, two practice putting greens, a new putting course designed by Hanse (“The Himalyas”), clubhouse including members bar and outdoor terrace, finely appointed locker rooms, private lounge with indoor golf simulator, games room and library, and 24/7 restaurant. Formed in August 2019, it is accessible to members only and their guests, and includes members of Pine Valley, Merion, Riviera, Sunningdale, Royal St. George’s, LA Country Club, Friar’s Head and Royal Melbourne among the approximately 150 current members. Additionally, Michaelis Boyd completed a full renovation of the clubhouse and 24 of the 39 member cottages thus far, while work on a new member gym, sports bar and private lounge and games room, including golf simulator, was recently completed. Near-term plans include the announced partnership with Six Senses for the transformation of the on-site 19th century ‘Chateau Bel Air’ into an 88-key luxury hotel and spa. Also, the creation of a community village square with restaurants, shops, a farmer’s market and outdoor amphitheater centered around the estate’s 13th century priory, and, of course, the variety of residential homes architecturally designed by Michaelis Boyd, to which there has been a lot of interest from existing golf members prior to the general release. THE GOLF CLUB AT DEVILS TOWER ESCALATE YOUR GAME

I

n the Black Hills of Wyoming, there lies an area of land unsullied by the hands of mega developers. An area that offers the calm, quiet, and serene environment that we all crave. This prestigious area of opportunity can be found only at the Golf Club at Devils Tower in Hulett, Wyoming.

In an age of mass communication, bustling transportation, and overflowing cities crowded by towering brick and mortar, it can be a large task trying to find a sense of serenity. For those who desire a place to rest and recharge after a long week, month, or even year of the stampede of everyday life, the fresh air and wide open spaces of these Black Hills are as close to paradise as one is likely to find. Here, you will find a lifestyle that calms the soul, and reinvigorates the body and mind. The tucked away oasis, located in the heart of the “Old West”, is sprawled out amongst 1,000 acres of stunning landscapes, pristine waters, and endless sunsets. The Golf Club at Devil’s Tower is a hidden gem of relaxed, carefree living unrivaled by anywhere else in the country, and offers an opportunity to experience life in its most peaceful and profound setting. This is the dream, and you deserve to revel in the immaculate surroundings and offerings that it provides. Situated along one of the most revered golf clubs in the country, the land property available to you is untouched by any outside influences other than the sun that shines down upon it. The awe-inspiring Wyoming landscape, full of tall pine trees, open valleys, red rimrock, and native grasses that stretch out as far as the eye can gaze, are yours to call home. In the distance, Devil’s Tower, America’s first National Monument, looms large and majestic, painting a scene that very few ever get to experience. For those who enjoy the outdoors and an active lifestyle, this area of Wyoming is renowned as a haven for big game hunting, fishing, and hiking. Hunting expeditions can yield large elk, turkeys, whitetails and mule deer for those with a keen eye and steady hand. Simply walking along your property can provide you with a visual escape from the reality of everyday life, and channel a sense of serenity that awakens and recharges the mind, body, and soul. This is where you will find the lifestyle you’ve been searching for, and it is where you will find the quintessential example of “the good life”.

The small town of under 500 full time residents has much more to offer than just stunning views and clean, crisp air. World class dining, unique locally owned shops, bars, and cafes, as well as some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet, are all part of the charm of this Western oasis. Their community calendar is filled with all types of events, from rodeos and parades, to community cookouts, and of course the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally, which lures over 100,000 visitors to the sleepy town every August. The crown jewel of our sprawling property is of course the Golf Club at Devil’s Tower. A destination like no other, and one that has been recognized time and again as one of the country’s most pristine and challenging courses. No longer simply a destination retreat for avid golfers from around the globe, the Club and its property has become a soughtafter home base for those looking for a life of leisure and adventure. Once simply a wide open landscape, this land is where local Patriarch Jim Neiman Sr. had a vision. He wanted to create an experience that would capture the mystique of the West, while providing private members with a golf property as pristine as the Black Hills air that blankets its fairways, as well as offer the small community an outlet for outdoor recreation. To say he has seen that vision through would be a glaring understatement.

The course itself is 7,111 yards of meticulously designed fairways, bunkers, greens and water challenges. Around every bend and curve, the views of the Wyoming landscape become more beautiful, and offer those who play here a true escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It’s difficult not to feel a sense of solitude and inner peace as you breathe in the crisp, clean air that fills the remarkably blue skies that hold watch over this stunning course. Their exclusive real estate opportunities are available on a very limited basis, and offer those interested a one-ofa-kind opportunity to become part of a community of residents that are living their best lives, surrounded by nothing but beauty, tranquility, and a sense of belonging in an otherwise crowded world. For those who travel from great distances, the Club has a 5,500-foot airstrip on-site, with concierge service to and from the clubhouse. If you’re ready to live your best life, call Todd Coover at (307) 467-5773 or inquire online at www.DevilsTowerGolf. com. Devils Tower Golf & Country Club is here to assist you in finding your personal oasis, and welcome you home.

BIG CEDAR GOLF AMERICA’S NEXT GREAT GOLF DESTINATION

Ozarks National

L

ocated deep within the Ozark Mountains of Missouri lies an unexpected destination that just might be the next big thing in golf. Big Cedar Lodge, both a nature enthusiast and sportsman’s dream escape, stretches along the shores of Table Rock Lake, and has long been hailed as America’s premier wilderness resort. Johnny Morris, noted conservationist and founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops, purchased Big Cedar Lodge in 1987 with the intent of creating a place for families to reconnect with nature. Over the years, Big Cedar Lodge has greatly expanded its offerings but Morris’ vision to create a wilderness resort as a place where conservation and family traditions come together has remained at the heart of the resort’s mission. Within moments of entering the property, it is easy to see that nature was the muse behind the resort’s design. A winding entry road takes you deep within the forested hills of the Ozarks calling you to slow down and take in the surrounding beauty, as the road travels over trickling water crossings showcasing stunning vistas. As you take your last turn, the scene opens to reveal a hidden oasis: secluded cabins tucked into the hillside, rustic lodges that blend seamlessly into their wooded backdrop, a charming chapel reminiscent of your grandparent’s country church and a collection of restaurants and activities that are thoughtfully placed to not disrupt of the natural splendor of the land. Over the years, Big Cedar Lodge has further expanded its commitment to connecting people with the great outdoors by redefining golf in the Ozarks. Five distinct courses are a vision of Morris and five of the biggest names in golf: Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Gary Player, Coore & Crenshaw and Tiger Woods. Through these masterful collaborations, no detail has been spared in creating a multi-course destination that beautifully embraces the natural landscape with exposed rock croppings, waterfalls and stunning Ozark Mountain views. Recently named the “#1 Golf Resort for Families” by GOLF Magazine, each of the Big Cedar courses artfully showcases designs to welcome golfers of all different skill levels, providing breathtaking views with every shot.

Ozarks National

Top of the Rock

Top of the Rock by Jack Nicklaus Top of the Rock, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, is the first-ever Par-3 course included in a PGA TOURsanctioned event, and features nature and golf at its finest. Perched high above Table Rock Lake, the peaceful waterfalls, wandering creeks, bass filled ponds and pristine lakes of Top of the Rock complete a true celebration of nature, the Ozarks and the game of golf. Buffalo Ridge Springs by Tom Fazio Matching the beauty of Top of the Rock is the Tom Fazio-designed Buffalo Ridge Springs Course (formerly Branson Creek Golf Club). KRISTIN CAVALLARI UNCOMMON JAMES

R

eality TV personality Kristin Cavallari launched her jewelry brand Uncommon James in 2017 so she could be her own boss and give women of all ages everywhere an affordable way to accessorize and stay on-trend. Every Uncommon James collection is created to be timeless, effortless, and sophisticated, while always keeping the modern women’s wants and needs in mind. Accessory options range from earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets. Cavallari makes sure her jewelry is always made with the highest end metals and gemstones, so you won’t have to worry about compromising price for the quality. A woman on the go is always looking for the best value accessories that can last, so Uncommon James makes sure to add and adjust their pieces specifically for busy and constantly changing schedules and lifestyles. Recently, the brand released its first-ever DemiFine Collection that features a sterling silver plated 14k gold addition and ethically sourced round cut diamonds that will last a lifetime. UJ prides itself on offering small ways for their customers to “treat themselves,” and adding this extra hint of luxury is the perfect way to do that.

Looking for a more personalized piece? UJ has you covered. Personalization options can be found on their website or at one of their two retail locations in Nashville and Chicago. The Sur and Initial Necklaces both offer the option to get letters plated onto silver, gold, or rose gold 14k brass pendants. The site also offers an entire Zodiac Collection that allows shoppers to celebrate their sun, moon, and rising signs. These necklaces have a textured coin pendant decorated with a celestial star design that can be worn either alone or with additional zodiac charms attached. If you want to customize beyond your initials or zodiac sign, UJ has an entire Charm Bar to mix, match, and create a statement piece of your own. The bar features a variety of

numbers, shapes, and symbols that can be added to any necklace or smaller hoop style but are most commonly paired with the ‘spellbound huggies’ and the ‘charmer’ and ‘on the ball’ necklaces because of their simple shape and the easy-to-layer space they have. Adding onto her list of collections, Cavallari just released her Fall 2020 line with a new assortment of pieces that have a fresh spin on some of UJ’s go-to originals. This collection introduced the brand’s first-ever single stud earring sets, with duos including symbols like hearts, an archer, or a wishbone for good luck. If you want to update your Holiday wardrobe, the black enamel collection is sure to bring you some seasonal edginess with darker colors, tones, and details.

Throughout the years, Cavallari has been inspired by her life experiences, travels, and exposure to fashion from around the world, specifically embracing her Italian roots. Family and home life come first for Kristin, so extending her product assortments into homeware and children’s clothing came as no surprise. Kristin explains that she “wanted to do something where I can first and foremost still be a mom,” but was also something she was passionate about. Thus, UJ Home and Little James were born! Notable worldwide retail partnerships and a corresponding television show that has catapulted the company into the international spotlight has allowed the brand to rapidly become a “go-to” staple for the modern woman. By bringing romance to life with her designs, Kristin also aims to bring the same romantic and trend-driven energy into the life of others when they purchase from her. With collections that are plain and simple “just easy,” as Kristin says time and time again, you’re bound to find the perfect go-to statement piece for a family member, friend, or even yourself that will last for years to come.

WILLIAM HENRY UNIQUE & TIMELESS

I

s exclusivity only about affluence? In a world full of multinational luxury brands, it’s still possible to feel truly unique.

We can define exclusivity as the sensation of being on a summit, surrounded by a small and select number of peers, and gazing at the world from a more advantageous and inaccessible position. As much as money will always be one of its main components, the concept of exclusivity has also nobler and more sophisticated underpinnings: personality and style, culture, good taste, and personal connections have always been equally relevant ingredients. But is this broadly accepted definition as encompassing as it might have been 25 years ago? Globalization and availability are doing to exclusivity what Xerox has done to art: by replicating it and making it promptly available, they have undermined its true essence and diminished the special aura of uniqueness that once shone around it. Money plays the main role today, and there’s not much room left for unique personalities, original tastes, and individual innovation.

“Most luxury brands have become multinational chains that no longer offer something truly unique or rare” – says Matt Conable, founder and creative engine of William Henry. “For many of these companies, exclusivity is defined predominantly by price and status, and not so much by originality or by the limited availability of their offerings”. ”I think of luxury as exotic, rare, precious, and timeless. The status is conferred by the quality of the product and what it says about the owner, as opposed to the current model where status is conferred by ‘brand ambassadors’ and massive advertising budgets”. Conable founded William Henry in 1997. He established the brand creating distinctive and award-winning pocketknives, effectively transforming the archetype

of all tools into a superb personality statement. Today’s collections include men’s jewelry, pens, culinary knives, money clips, and William Henry has become one of the most exclusive and admired brands in the oftenoverlooked world of luxury for men. But what makes this brand so distinctive is that it has proudly retained the aura and feel of an artisan workshop, where every piece is designed and created exclusively in small, limited, often unique editions. The distinctive character of the artistry and the personality of the materials make this brand’s every creation truly original. No two pieces are alike. “I like the idea that William Henry’s creations strike a personal chord in our clients” – says Conable.

“Every now and then, it is important to invest in objects that are personal, immediately useful, yet timeless in their appeal and relevance – these rare pieces are imbued with the personality of their owners, and become part of their living legacy”. In the past century, movie stars and royals played a fundamental role in propelling to fame brands like Bulgari or Cartier. It’s not surprising that today’s search for exclusivity is brought forth by personalities and individuals that interpret style and luxury as a means to affirm their distinctive personality, where choosing truly unique creations is just as important as their intrinsic value. William Henry’s customers are treated and indeed they feel - like a small, exclusive

elite. The company is reserved about them, but we know their clients range from Hollywood celebrities to rock stars, royalty, and heads of state. Understanding the thin line that separates fashionable from exclusive is an important challenge for most luxury brands. It describes the difference between the concepts of timeless and ephemeral, character and trend, and it defines the universally gratifying feeling of possessing a truly unique personality. Exclusivity is possible today as it was 100 years ago. You just need to know where to look, and approach your choices with the right mindset. As Matt Conable puts it: “Exclusivity is about being you, not being like someone else”

MCLAREN CHARLOTTE PREPARE. COMMIT. BELONG.

T

he history of Charlotte, North Carolina dates back to colonial times. It was first incorporated during the Revolutionary War and promptly named after England’s King George III’s wife. Hence the city’s second moniker, the Queen City. In addition to being the largest city in the state, Charlotte occupies an area in the Piedmont region that has driven it to prominence in multiple avenues. This was the site of the first major gold rush in the United States prompting the formation of the original US Mint. During the Civil War it became a major railway hub due to its centralized proximity to other major southern cities. Following the war and entering the nation’s Reconstruction years, Charlotte rebuilt itself as the premier outpost for the cotton trade and foremost player in the textile industry. Now entering the third decade of the 21st century, Charlotte has again redefined itself by becoming the fastest growing banking hub in America.

With the city’s population increasing by nearly 25% in the past decade it has become the third fastest growing major city in the country. Charlotte’s boom is mainly due to its status as the nation’s second largest banking hub, trailing only New York City. With an ever expanding skyline and the ceaseless opening of private businesses, it’s no secret why this city is host to so many cultural affairs. As home to teams in the NFL, NBA, AAA MLB, and hosting two annual NASCAR Sprint Cup races, the city has become a highly desirable venue for avid sports fans and a sought after commercial market for major investors. All of these are contributing factors to Charlotte’s increasing standard of luxury. McLaren Charlotte opened its doors in December 2019 and has never looked back. They continue to push the boundaries and push the city’s economical relevance by consistently updating their product awareness.

ULTIMATE COLLECTOR CARS

INTRODUCTION WRITTEN BY CHARLOTTE & PETER FIELL

T

his book’s title, Ultimate Collector Cars by Taschen, sums up in just three simple words pretty much what it is all about. As a carefully curated anthology of one hundred of the most exquisite, remarkable and coveted collector cars of all time, it spans the whole history of the modern automobile. These motoring icons — from the world’s very first performance cars of the early 1900s to today’s ultraadvanced hypercars — represent the apotheosis of automotive engineering and design. Even in their own times these exemplars of automotive art, which so skillfully balanced state-of-the-art technology with boundarypushing aesthetics, were seen as super-special and today knowledgeable collectors continue to hanker after them for their exceptional power, beauty and rarity. Many of the cars included in this work are legendary for their especially pioneering designs such as the Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp, the Jaguar D-Type, the Maserati Tipo 61 “Birdcage”, the Lamborghini Miura and the McLaren F1. Others, like the Bugatti Type 35, the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B MM, the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Ford GT40 MK II or the Maserati MC12, are not only celebrated for the exquisite design and engineering that they embody, but also for their landmark victories at famous races, notably the Targa Florio, the Mille Miglia, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 12 Hours of Sebring, or the FIA GT World Championship Series and, thereby, their tangible association with some of the most famous drivers of their day, such as Sir Henry “Tim” Birkin, Tazio Nuvolari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss and Phil Hill. Without exception, all the cars are closely linked to the world’s most celebrated designers and constructors, including Wilhelm Maybach, Enzo Ferrari, Battista “Pinin” Farina, Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche and Carroll Shelby.

With the aim of bringing together the best of the best, all the leading salerooms, automotive museums and manufacturers’ collections as well as top-level dealers’ former and current inventories have been scoured for the most magnificent examples in order to present within the pages of this volume what we believe to be the definitive selection of ultimate collector cars. Only the most prized variants of each chosen model have been selected, so you will find, for instance, not just any Jaguar XK-SS but instead the magnificent example that was once owned by Steve McQueen that now resides in the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Another example is the Lamborghini Miura, for which we are featuring a peerless specimen, one of only four original factory-built P400 SVJ variants. All of these remarkable cars are presented here with beautiful imagery by some of the world’s leading automotive photographers, and accompanied by the fascinating backstories of their design, development, specification, and in many cases provenance. Another common thread that ties our selection together is the fact that the vast majority of the cars that have made the final cut are either former racers with documented race histories or competitionderived models.

This is for the simple reason that motorsports have always propelled advancements in cuttingedge automotive design and engineering, and will no doubt continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Above all, the outstanding cars shown over the coming pages are physical realizations of the enduring relationship between man and machine, which in the case of such superlative models provides a unique interface that not only quickens the heart but piques all the senses, too. Yet more than this, these one hundred rare beasts also represent lifetimes of toil in the pursuit of motoring perfection. It is as though the blood, sweat and tears shed by their creators in their singleminded quest for ever-greater performance have been alchemically wrought into sublimely beautiful yet purposeful forms. The resultant masterpieces are probably as close to art as any functional object can get, for they are exquisite expressions of design and engineering conducted at the highest levels. They are the masterworks of genius engineers, gifted design maestros and passionate, supremely skilled craftsmen for whom automotive excellence is everything — the alpha and the omega of their very existence. These are the individuals who tirelessly live and breathe, day in and day out, the creation of cars that push the outer limits of existing technology in their pursuit of ever more thrilling handling and high-speed velocity. As the legendary “car guy” Jay Leno has rightly observed, “Any car can be a collector car, if you collect it.” 1 The examples featured here, however, represent the very zenith of the carcollecting world, insofar as the availability of imagery has allowed. Yes, there might be some other, possibly even better, exemplars out there, but invariably their ownership is either shrouded in secrecy or they are locked away in inaccessible collections whose owners are reluctant to share their imagery, or even knowledge of their existence, with the public. The selected cars are, therefore, to the best of our efforts, the paramount examples that are available to be shown. In fact, the numerous image sources we have depended on for this book have been outstandingly generous and in certain cases have even specially commissioned new photography for us. The resulting assemblage of stunning collector cars has been ordered chronologically to purposefully demonstrate not only the incredible historical evolution in form and function that has taken place over the last one hundred and twenty years, but also to show that automotive design throughout its relatively short history has been an incredible expression of each era’s zeitgeist.

As Leslie Kendall, the curator of the Petersen Automotive Museum, notes, “During periods of creative endeavor, humankind has found it irresistible to bestow on ordinary objects an artistic overlay that elevates them far above their original utilitarian purposes ... Civilized cultures always seem to have known the essential distinction between ‘getting there’ and ‘arriving’.”² And for sure, the cars found in this book are as far removed from the utilitarian “people’s car” as you can possibly get. In fact, they must be considered the auto world’s equivalent of Rembrandts, Van Goghs and Picassos. Whatever the future may bring, however, it is highly likely there will remain a limited recreational demand for both “old” and “new” ultimate collector cars, because, let’s face it, none of the examples shown over the following pages is used as a daily runabout — they are far too valuable for that. If the truth be told, very few get out that much at all, and even fewer are raced on a regular basis, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t see more light of day. In fact, it is that potentiality that makes them all the more alluring. While such fantastically valuable cars more often than not function as, or are, museum exhibits, the latent possibility they present of high-octane drivability is still utterly enthralling. The ultimate collector car has throughout its short but glorious history always been a potent symbol of mankind’s relentless quest to find a better way of doing things with the technologies and materials at hand, while also being a vital medium for artistic expression. But more than this, these “immortals” are also the physical testimony of the enduring passion such beautiful and powerful machines can induce, whether you actually own one or not. The reason for this is, when you get right down to it, ultimate collector cars have always been a totally captivating elixir of status, power, beauty and speed that conjure up the freedom of the open road as well as enticing visions of epic touring adventures and thrilling on-track shenanigans, with often a pinch of wistful nostalgia peppered in for good measure. So, here’s to some very happy dream wheeling … www.Taschen.com

CABLE WINE SYSTEMS TURN YOUR WINE COLLECTION INTO A WORK OF ART

T

he Cable Wine Systems® has become the “must have” feature for both residential and commercial wine collections. Its sophisticated and versatile nature provides clients the freedom to create cellars and/ or displays that are both functional and beautiful, while adding value to any home or business property. The Cable Wine System® may be placed in a cooled or uncooled environment, and the quality and construction of the Cable Wine System® is second to none. Whether you prefer to organize your bottles neck out or label view, the versatility of the Cable Wine System® allows for consistent airflow throughout the entire collection, all while making every bottle easy to locate and access. Today’s consumers who are constantly searching for fresh ideas that reflect their own personal tastes and style will appreciate the creative flexibility that the Cable Wine System® has to offer over more traditional wine storage options. Available in a variety of contemporary finishes (chrome, silver pearl, satin black, and satin gold), the Cable Wine System® provides clients with the flexibility to mix and match in order to create a cellar or feature wine display that is truly one of a kind and unique to them. Whether a customer’s design style is more traditional or modern, this system can be customized to enhance or compliment any space.

Along with the versatility of its installation options, the minimalist nature of the Cable Wine Systems® also provides clients with excellent label visibility, and can accommodate a wider variety of bottle sizes within the same column from 375ml-1500ml (1.5L), without having to deviate from the standard configuration or needing to purchase additional parts. Sold by the piece and hand assembled on site by a qualified contractor, proper reinforcement is key with the installation of this tension-based system. Whether installed from ceiling to floor or within cabinetry, this wine racking system is equally stunning. The vertical cables are available in two lengths (10’ and 20’) that can be modified on site. Clients also have the ability to design their system to store fewer than the maximum number of bottles in order to highlight features behind or beyond the system such as stone work or accent walls. The high visibility through the system has also made it ideal to use as a dividing line between two larger rooms or spaces.

As wine cellars are ever evolving to include more contemporary designs and features such as works of art, unique furniture, and other prized possessions, the collecting and storage of wine continues to become increasingly more popular. Whereas basements used to be the “go to” spot for most wine storage areas, with modern refrigeration options, wine cellars and displays can now be incorporated almost anywhere. Steve Papadimitriou, the owner and creator of the family owned and operated Cable Wine Systems®, recently stated “I am very excited to be able to offer our client’s a variety of choices when it comes to designing and creating a wine racking system for their home. We are continuously exploring new ideas when it comes to finishes, following the trends, and staying flexible when it comes to design, all the while remaining true to our original vision for the Cable Wine System®.” For additional information and inspiration please visit www.CableWineSystems.com

ou’ve found a property with the most breathtaking view, your piece of paradise. You’ve created a vision that is your heart’s desire, your dream home. Make sure you enjoy the full view. Hope’s Windows, Inc. provides extraordinary homes with the world’s finest steel and bronze windows and doors—timeless in appearance and enduring for generations. To say that Hope’s is the source of the world’s finest windows and doors is a bold statement! However Randy Manitta, President/CEO of the company, makes this claim with a depth of personal knowledge deriving from a 44-year tenure in the industry. Hope’s is the oldest and largest manufacturer of steel and bronze windows and doors in the United States. Designing and handcrafting solid steel and bronze windows and doors since 1912, the company continues to refine the art that makes their products the most sought-after, luxurious and longest lasting in the world. Hope’s solid steel and bronze windows and doors have a distinct appearance characterized by uniquely delicate frames and large areas of glass. This refined quality of elegance is impossible to achieve with other mediums. “Steel is one of the first raw materials used in the fabrication of windows, though it is often one of the least understood,” contends Manitta. Solid steel and bronze are stronger than any other window and door materials— strength that allows for substantially thinner frames, larger glass lites, and virtually unlimited scale and shape. This strength and design flexibility translates to more natural light and wider views. Moreover, steel and bronze have a better natural insulating capability compared to other metals such as aluminum. This, together with modern advancements in glazing, results in exceptional thermal performance and condensation resistance.

Hope’s engineers took that performance to new heights with the innovation of Thermal Evolution technology. This system, exclusive to the brand, is an advanced thermal break that enhances performance without splitting the steel frames, thus maintaining the structural integrity of the steel. Defying the austere ruggedness often associated with steel, Hope’s windows and doors become a tactile piece of the architecture—a surprisingly opulent interaction with smooth, graceful movement at the touch of a finger. The story of a Hope’s window or door begins with the transformation of raw steel into geometrically complex and remarkably strong frame profiles through a process called hot-rolling. Hope’s solid, hot-rolled steel profiles are exclusive to the brand. Each is engineered with strength, purpose, and aesthetics in mind. Every Hope’s window and door is completely custom and crafted by hand to achieve your specific aesthetic and performance criteria. Manitta explains that this sort of production is not typical in the modern industry. “In today’s world, you usually see more automation,” he says, adding that the Hope’s facility often reminds visitors of the blacksmith’s shops of a bygone era. Walking through the door of Hope’s factory is like taking a step back in time. You hear the din of hammers and tools as craftsmen use 100-year-old methods to give shape and form to steel. Each step of the process is completed with unrivaled artistry by a practiced hand and an expert eye. It takes time, but it is the only way to ensure windows designed to last for generations.

“We place great trust in our craftsmen,” emphasizes Robert DuBois, Vice President/Operations. “It’s an art, and the countless luxury homes and prestigious buildings across the country are a testament to their skills.” Whether you are restoring an historic property or building anew, Hope’s windows and doors fit every variety of architecture from grand, traditional estates to sleek, contemporary homes. Every Hope’s window and door is custom crafted to your specific vision. Each curve, profile and placement, material and finish fully reflects your individual style. Widely regarded for their ability to customize and meet virtually any design and performance criteria, Hope’s went beyond to create an entirely new product that replicates and preserves the historic window features of the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. The resulting arrow-shaped profiles are unique to the present-day market. This incredibly thin and elegant arrowshaped profile became increasingly popular, and demand grew for doors and other operational types in the residential market. Hope’s responded and is delighted to announce the release of their new complete product line—Hope’s Old World Suite.

Hope’s enterprising team never stops imagining how its products can evolve, from rethinking the smallest details to designing entirely new systems. This dedication to innovation has maintained Hope’s place in the forefront of the field for more than 100 years. Hope’s subjects its products to more third party testing and certifications than any other steel window and door manufacturer. The company’s uncommon diligence provides peace of mind and delivers proven performance and protection from harsh climates, extreme weather events, and corrosive coastal environments. For more than a century, Hope’s handcrafted steel and bronze windows and doors have been synonymous with longevity and quality. From the development of truly visionary design concepts through an unparalleled finishing process, Hope’s is the first choice in premium quality steel and bronze windows and doors built to last a lifetime and beyond. www.HopesWindows.com

MIKEL TUBE WOODEN DIVING BOARDS

T

he more difficult a high-end product is to attain, the more originality and uniqueness it possesses. The wooden diving boards by Mikel Tube certainly enters this category. What once started as a single project has now become a full time activity with customers all over the world. Years of experience are the foundation of their quality and constant innovation. This makes them unique - and the last of their kind remaining. Each board is handcrafted and can be personalized to your wishes. The specific design could be created by the very pure and light surface with a solid backbone which is invisible due the particular assembling. This allows Mikel Tube to change the length of the board to your wishes. Winner of the Los Angeles International Design Awards in 2014 for the Revelation 1 model and now competing with the new Derover 1 model, a certain success. In 2020, the Derover 1 was launched and immediately got the attention of the industry. Some describe it as a piece of art. Indeed the new techniques used have allowed to create a stunning wooden diving board without losing the initial basic design that distinguishes the products of Mikel Tube.

The best wood for a diving board is Brazilian hardwood TAMBUIA, better known as IPE. It offers strength and flexibility while also being very sustainable. But this kind of wood also needs a particular approach. Unlike classic types of wood, IPE has its own way. Years of experience have ensured that those special assembly techniques are mastered by Mikel. Starting with the exclusive “floating” technique® at first and now releasing the innovative “tension” technique®, makes the wooden diving boards of Mikel Tube unique. Design, innovation, respect for nature and a constant effort to improve are the main pillars of the brand that pioneered the use of specific techniques. Located in Belgium, they are proud to export the bulk of their production all over the world, adding the Belgian sense of precision and correctness in the package. Is a handcrafted wooden diving board the icing on the cake? You might think of Mikel’s designs like a jewel that finalizes the whole project, be it a swimming pool or a motor yacht. The owner has made a real effort to find the top location, a pool designer who perfectly embeds the project into this environment, a pool builder then carefully deploys what has been conceived. All this effort will stand out with a beautiful diving board. Compare it with dressing up for a special evening, the jewel will be put on last, the finishing touch to make it all perfect. Once a week, Mikel takes the time to discuss projects remotely via video conferencing, after which he would reach out to Robert in Melbourne or Caroline in Los Angeles for example. “How would you want our customers to trust us unless they can reach us” would be his most repeated guideline.

After a customer has initiated a request, a dedicated point-of-contact will be designated to help this particular customer through the whole process. Starting with advice on the type of board or the size of the bracket, then entering the phase of safety communication and maintenance and finally ending with the helping hand on shipping and delivery, there is always one dedicated personal contact for every customer. Renowned all over the world and adopted by the most beautiful residential pools and motor yachts on the planet. Mikel Tube stands for personal relationships with customers. A small dedicated team handles the one to one contact creating a trustful relationship over any geographical distance. Mikel personally gives advice and creates the design of the global project if requested. Blending beauty, fun, and functionality is what design is all about. Combining quality, style, and affordability is the real challenge. Every design lover knows it comes with a price. Finding the delicate balance between quality, affordability, and style. These is the key elements to creating a unique product that sells. Mikel advises every pool owner to add a diving board as a safety measure. Water is not the natural habitat for people, so safety should be one of the major concerns of a pool owner. A diving board will orient the diver to the deep end of your pool, making him dive from the spot where he/she can not touch the bottom of the pool. Diving from the deck on the shallow end will always be dangerous. Some of Mikel’s customers use the diving board cover to give a clear message to their children that the pool is not open. Mikel will even have a specific message embroidered on the cover if requested. One of the major impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the company is the surging cost of shipping. The boards, with an average weight of 220 pounds, are packed in special designed, reusable crates. The pandemic led to a worldwide crisis in aviation and with less space available, ocean freight is also now offered as a possibility for the patient customer. But the COVID-19 pandemic also brought some challenges that were less expected. The ban on travel makes it difficult to have photoshoots at the exotic places where Mikel’s customers reside. Instead, the team at Mikel Tube will reach out to their existing customers in 2021 and request that they enter the world wide competition for the most beautiful project. The winners, based on the number of likes on the dedicated Instagram portal, will be rewarded with the optional Diving Bench model. www.WoodenDivingBoards.com

MONTAUK BEACH HOUSE BY REBEKAH CAUDWELL DESIGN

T

he property is a contemporary house in Montauk, Long Island, by architect Steven Harris, built in 2007, now interior designed by Rebekah Caudwell Design. The main entrance of the house is accessed from the driveway at lower ground level. On this level, after the entrance hall and mudroom, the space opens into a large games room with a concealed wet bar. There is also a cinema room and a children’s bedroom with a bathroom. The cinema and children’s bedroom both have windows looking onto the swimming pool. A set of stairs in the entrance hall leads up to a guest wing with three further en-suite guest rooms. Through the games room another set of stairs leads up to the ground floor where there is an open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area, plus a w/c. A final set of stairs from this floor leads up to the master suite, which is its own private unit. There is a courtyard between the guest wing and the kitchen / dining / lounge area. To the other side of this area is the swimming pool and hot tub leading onto the lawn, and beyond that the bluff that descends to the sea. “Okay, I confess I am totally hooked on blues and greens. I start a project determined to veer from them but they always find me sooner or later. But here with a swimming pool running along one entire length of the house casting an aqua glow, the rolling green lawn, and the sea stretching endlessly beyond, the choice was easy” says Rebekah.

Rebekah Caudwell and Nick Dupart

The back of this Hamptons home that Rebekah and husband Nick rescued from bland obscurity is hugged by an L-shape of swimming pool blue, with the azure sea beyond. Rebekah and Nick fell for the house’s spare and simple architecture, which conceals interesting shifts of level and sightlines. The front of the house isn’t at all ostentatious – quite unusual for the Hamptons which can tend towards overblown faux pillars and porticoes, but Rebekah and Nick liked its discreet character and location. Once you walk in you realise its not short on beauty, its just all at the back of the house. And the architect also had the grace to allow the views and landscape their say. The property’s varying levels create an open flow, yet quieter, more private nooks and interesting turns are interspersed throughout. “The juxtaposition of cubes and cantilevering is quite striking, so we wanted to let the architecture still hold sway but we could see ways to create so much more interest and life inside its spaces” says Rebekah. She had been eyeing this house for over a year but was biding her time, watching the market and aware they did not really have the funds for a new purchase. The seaside house is in Montauk, at the very eastern tip of the Hamptons, also known as The End. Formerly excluded from the Hamptons proper, it’s now the hip place to hang out, with some great waterside restaurants, juice bars and of course, Soul Cycle.

The house had been presented for sale in a way that was plain and devoid of personality. Expanses of unbroken cream travertine, white walls and white surfaces, and Rebekah felt the pull to wave a magic wand. “It felt more like walking into a very expensive hospital rather than a home. I think when the architecture is fairly severe, spare ascetic interiors simply feel too cold. A house should never feel like a mausoleum. It needs to feel like a living entity, with its own pulse. I am a maximalist at heart but I did try to reign myself in a little with this house as I didn’t want to drown its subtlety with too much ‘stuff’” Rebekah adds. With Rebekah’s love of color she was itching to put some soul into the place. Once purchased, she swept through the interlocking series of white spaces spreading color, pattern and warmth. Go-to shades of turquoises and teals, zingy greens and luminous aqua woke things up. The curvaceous mid-century designs, Jonathan Adler numbers and thought provoking art breathed life into the house. The sculpture by Beth Carter in the living room Rebekah says, “muses on our preconceptions of storytelling and our obsessions with ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’; how if you tilt the angle of the story these distinctions are less clear or even totally subverted. The Patricia Traub oil painting in the master bedroom is similarly challenging. Patricia works in the style of an old master, but poses very contemporary questions about humanity and our relationship with the animal world”. “Nick and I love working with different styles of architecture. I wouldn’t say that we have a favorite though I am extremely drawn to history and perhaps Nick is more taken with contemporary design. We tend to represent the yin and the yang both in business and our personal lives. My interior design is always partially informed and inspired by the architecture and its setting, but color is always the main springboard.” adds Rebekah. This weekend getaway home came with a few layout quirks but Rebekah turned them to her advantage. The lower ground entry floor which links guest wing and main wing had initially felt bare unfriendly and distant, a no-man’s land, but she reimagined this transitional space as a games zone – complete with a pool table, topped in vivid turquoise, bold geometrics and ikats. It now evokes a joyful, holiday spirit that continues in the guest rooms. When it came to the games room, the space was previously an undefined corridor that seemed devoid of purpose, other than as a link between living areas and guest bedrooms. “I wanted to inject fun and create a family hub on this lower floor”. There is an interesting nook at the end of this space with odd juxtapositions of items Rebekah says they have found on their travels throughout the years. “The painting is by an amazingly talented young LA based artist called Rachid Bouhamidi. It’s a joy to help support young artists”. RebekahCaudwellDesign.com
