OCEAN INDEPENDENCE THE ULITMATE YACHTING LIFESTYLE

G

oing one step beyond charter to yacht purchase is the ultimate lifestyle choice, with ownership delivering the greatest of rewards and providing the freedom to create unique memories with loved ones. It can certainly be hard to decide which is the perfect yacht when viewing the variety on offer – for some choosing between motor or sail can be straightforward, for others it is a more difficult decision. Synonymous with speed and power, motor yachts are frequently what first comes to mind for many when visualizing a superyacht. Sleek and stylish, without the restriction of sails and rigging, motor yachts often offer spacious living accommodation. Depending on the size, motor yachts also have the capacity to house a large range of extensive amenities such as beach clubs, gyms and elevators. A great option for welcoming friends and family on board, motor yachts offer roomy staterooms with flexible layouts plus a selection of deck areas. Due to their elevated level from the water, motor yachts often deliver a drier sailing experience, with a smoothness aided by stabilizers. Able to explore locations within a quicker time frame without reliance on wind, there is also the addition to store tenders and water toys. For unlimited world cruising, and those seeking adventure, motor yachts certainly fit the bill.

Liberating and invigorating, with the wind in your hair and salt spray on your face, the romance and exhilaration of sailing yachts is magical. Many sailing yachts today offer surprisingly expansive accommodation and open plan layouts plus the general lack of engine noise makes for the ultimate sense of peace and privacy. Reliance on wind power can sometimes bring logistical challenges, which is where advanced planning for all voyages is recommended. Sailing yachts generally offer good, if slightly more practical, amenities and water toys, whilst certainly featuring, tend to be less extensive than on a motor yacht due to storage limitations. Handling rigging and sails can be physically demanding and time consuming, so sailing yachts often require a more specialized crew. Many feature a shallow draft, allowing access into more remote bays for an enhanced up-close experience. One big draw of buying a sailing yacht is being part of the sailing “family” to experience regattas and other traditional yachting events. Falling somewhere in between the motor sailer is the perfect combination for some – effectively 100% sailing and 100% motor yacht, able to perform to uncompromising standards for either purpose. Offering the sheer fun of sailing with the efficiency of motor propulsion plus often the bonus of roll reduction for a smoother ride, motor sailers are a highly attractive option for some. Enjoy the simplicity and silence of using sails with the peace of mind that essential mechanical assistance is always available if the wind is not in your favor. Many of these yachts also feature great outdoor space, large indoor areas and stateof-the-art amenities that could rival any motor yacht of a similar size. Representing a diverse fleet of yachts currently available for sale, the team of experienced yacht brokers at Ocean Independence offer extraordinary expertise and industry knowledge. From survey results to sea trials, negotiations to legalities, they assist every step of the way to deliver a stress-free process resulting in a successful transaction. With a variety of berths across luxury marinas in the Mediterranean and beyond, both for sale and rent, they can also source the ideal home for your new pride and joy. Toby Maclaurin Sales Director at Ocean Independence comments, “We all feel pride in ownership of something we have worked hard to achieve. For many there is nothing more satisfying than owning a boat or yacht that offers a unique sense of independence, control and accomplishment all wrapped up in the same experience.” Yacht ownership brings the chance to explore a wealth of opportunities whilst cruising azure waters, with leisurely lunches on deck, teaching your children to swim from the aft deck or simply following the sun. On board, your own private crew will pre-empt your needs to ensure your personal preferences are always their number one priority. The luxury yachting lifestyle doesn’t get better than this, it is time to shape your future and discover the incomparable triumph of having your very own superyacht. MOONEN YACHTS IN TRUSTED HANDS

F

or 40 years, Dutch shipyard Moonen Yachts have been crafting some of the finest and well-constructed superyachts on the market today. The Dutch are well known worldwide for their craftsmanship and Moonen take it to the next level with their exquisite materials and finishes sourced from around the world, resulting in a unique superyacht, built perfectly for the lucky few who can call a Moonen their very own. Celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, Moonen are proud to be home to 20 carpenters and engineers, all of whom play an integral part in the creation of their incredible yachts and some who have graced the outfitting sheds since close to inception. A small operation by comparison to larger shipyards, but certainly no less dedicated or able, each member of the team brings their own experience and enthusiasm to their role and has their own story as to why their passion lies in yachting. For Nicky van Zon, Moonen’s Technical Director, his love for the industry started when he became a watersports and sailing enthusiast when he was very young. Sailing with his parents, Nicky knew how to

Nicky van Zon Technical Director

sail long before he knew how to swim. But before he was allowed to take a boat out on his own, his parents made sure he knew how to tread water. The decision to go into the yachting industry came during Nicky’s naval architecture studies and it was at this moment that he got in touch with Moonen for the first time. As the story goes, he applied for an internship and then he never left. Making a career within the company, Nicky moved from Intern to Assistant Project Manager, then became Project Manager and finally Technical Director, tallying up a total of over 13 years with Moonen Yachts. Proof that hard work and passion can turn into a very rewarding career. But what made Nicky stick with Moonen? “I always felt there was a new opportunity on the horizon within the company. I was young and eager, I was challenged and given opportunities to grow. A big part of me staying was, well, just take a look at our product! I was so proud to be a part of the team that had a hand in building these superyachts. Because we are a small shipyard and only build a couple of superyachts per year, you have a strong connection to each and every build.”

With each yachts’ design and build centred around serious cruising capabilities, we would be proud too! The naval architecture and hull design of recently delivered 36m Moonen, M/Y KOKORO, was executed by René van der Velden Yacht Design in collaboration with Diana Yacht Design. René says “Today many clients like to travel at higher speeds than a typical displacement vessel can offer, without requiring planning or even semi displacement top speed. At the same time they are attracted to the solid feel of a steel hull. There is also a preference to maximise the amount of (indirect) natural light in the interior and the view to outside, requiring a high amount of glass.” “The above combination of requirements may sound simple and logical, but prove a real challenge in terms of naval architecture. To keep the weight in hand the hull was constructed in High Tensile Steel.” Both naval architects performed preliminary structural calculations to find the optimum arrangement of longitudinal and transverse stiffeners, resulting in a weight saving of 15%. “We opted for a design that would be highly efficient over the entire speed range. This shape also enhances a comfortable ride in all conditions.” Further ensuring a comfortable journey is the distinct way Moonen make their “silent ships”. Cornee de Bruin, Head of the Mechanical Department tells us that onboard, “all components including pumps, hydraulic blocks and electrical cabinets are mounted on

Cornee de Bruin Head of Mechanics

rubber dampers which absorb the noise and vibration. All pipes are mounted on these rubber dampers too, especially in the engine room. The generators and exhaust are mounted on specially designed frames and the generators have the added benefit of also being mounted on air suspension, so essentially, they are floating on air which keeps the noise and vibration to an absolute minimum. In addition to this, nothing is fitted directly below the main deck or on the bulkhead, to ensure no noise or vibration passes into the main living spaces.” So when you’re out enjoying the most stunning, serene landscape, you can know with absolute certainty that your journey won’t be interrupted by unwelcome noise, but rather your enjoyment at sea will increase exponentially. And how is this managed? Each Moonen is put through a rigorous sea trial period where every feature is pushed to its limits. “During the commissioning stage we take measurements of the noise and vibration levels and with these results we can then adjust and regulate the settings of the air suspension for the generators. During sailing the hydraulic system is pressureless, so hydraulic noises cannot travel through the pipelines which are running throughout the accommodation” says Cornee. All Moonen yachts are built to withstand even the toughest of elements. And whilst you may opt to enjoy the serene waters of the Med, the comfort is in knowing that you will be traveling safely across any body of water due to the processes and procedures Moonen have in place.

Proving Moonen Yachts have a long history of nurturing young, enthusiastic potential craftsmen and turning them into skilled heads of production departments, Jos van Dongen, head of the shipyards Interior department, has been a valued member of the Moonen team for over 25 years. A family background of carpentry meant that Jos was exposed to this craft from a very young age. He took a keen interest in woodwork at 12 years old where he began to hone his skills at school. The first piece he ever made was a hand crafted side table. This later evolved into building kitchens during various summer jobs he held and also assisting his uncle in his business. Living very close to the river and having a few boats in the family, Jos was always immersed in the “on the water” lifestyle. Back then, Moonen yachts were in fact prepared for sea trials in the port located in his hometown. This is where he first remembers being impressed by yachts of this size; “Lady M was a really big yacht that I remember seeing poking out over the dyke’s. In my small hometown, the dyke’s are around 5-6 meters high! Seeing Lady M towering above them, at 14 years old, was really impressive!”. From that point on Jos decided that working for Moonen would be a great opportunity to further develop and refine his skills. And so, at 16 years old, he became the youngest apprentice in the carpentry department at the time. For four years Jos continued to work on his apprenticeship whilst finishing his schooling for carpentry, before transitioning into full time work in the outfitting department for the shipyard. Over the next few years, he went on to complete qualifications in mechanical design and engineering. This enabled him to move into interior engineering in 2002 and then in 2008 he became the head of the interior department, which is where he continues to thrive today. And so what was it about working for Moonen Yachts that made him stay? “It’s a package deal” says Jos, “Moonen feels like family. It’s a small group of dedicated craftsmen who love working towards delivering a beautiful yacht to its owners. The position I’m in means that I’m across everything from start to delivery. From day one I’m in charge of the end result and this of course makes me very proud.” “Moonen is a small family group. I always say we are great at making decisions quickly, because we have the ability to come together in a smaller group and discuss what is needed moving forward. We trust each other, which is so important within a shipyard and it’s impressive that such a small group of people can deliver such a high quality, well-crafted product on such a large scale.” “On a daily basis it’s always great to work with high quality products such as fabrics, veneers and marble. In the carpentry world, this is the best of the best. What I love about working in the interior department, is that this is what makes the yacht customized, it’s always a one off, never the same, which is what makes our department different from the others.” Each and every Moonen is unique and handcrafted with love from the inside out. And those who own one, know that when you invest in a Moonen, you’re not just getting a yacht, you’re getting a way of life. BLUEWATER YACHT SALES PRINCESS YACHTS V-65

W

ith striking lines, refined style, and remarkable performance, few boats can compare to the versatility and performance of the Princess Yachts V-65. Princess is world renowned for their motor yachts, sport coupes, flybridge yachts, and even super-flybridge yachts, but the V Series models are in a class of their own. With boats ranging from 40 to 78 feet, the Princess V Series combines superior speed and handling with luxury accommodations and expansive entertainment spaces. As one of the larger members of the V-Class, the 65 showcases sleek lines, remarkable performance, and plenty of space for owners, guests, and crew. Made to Entertain Princess crafted the V-65 with entertainment in mind, with ample room for guests and plenty of accommodations for extended getaways. The 65 features a massive aft sunpad, which lifts hydraulically to uncover a tender storage area and launch system. There are also hatches hidden below the sunpad, which provide access to the lazarette and the optional crew cabin. The aft deck is an expansive outdoor entertainment space, highlighted by a large U-shaped seating area with a teak table, a wet bar, grill and cooler. The glass window forward of the wet bar also opens to the galley for easy food and drink service. If the space on the aft deck were not enough, the V-65 also has another seating area on the foredeck, including a forward sunpad and more lounge seating.

Moving into the salon, you will notice immense windows throughout the boat, making it ideal for those who want to enjoy the outdoors from inside. The V-65 offers a spacious interior, with a galley to port, a dining area to starboard, a wraparound sofa, as well as an entertainment center with a 49-inch TV. Another signature feature of the V-Series is the retractable sunroof, which slides away to create an open-air seating area in the comfort of the salon. The helm is located forward, and features two adjustable chairs, a side-entry door, along with the installed electronics and control systems. Once the entertaining is over, there is room to retire below, with a full-beam master stateroom, a fullbeam en suite head, a forward VIP stateroom, and two private guest berths. The master stateroom is beautifully appointed and features a double berth, dressing table, sofa, wardrobes, drawer storage, and another entertainment center. The guest accommodations are equally impressive, with ample storage and access to two additional heads.

Style & Performance The V Series is known as Princess’s sport line for a reason. These boats are immediately recognizable, with low profiles, sleek styling, and sporty performance. Princess is well known for their Olesinski designed deep-v hulls and high-horsepower engines, and all of the V Series boats showcase low planing speeds and exceptional handling. The V-65 comes equipped with twin MAN V12-1400 engines, which gives it a combined 2,800 horsepower, and a speed range approaching 38 knots. The latest Princess V-65 will be making several appearances on the East Coast this Fall, including stops in Annapolis for the United States Powerboat Show, and in South Florida for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. or any of their other models, please contact a Bluewater Yacht Sales specialist at 877.269.3021. WORTH AVENUE YACHTS CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF GROWTH WRITTEN BY SAM FORTESCUE

Photography by Stuart Pearce

T

here’s the deep, throaty roar of a vintage Harley in the background as I speak to the founders of Worth Avenue Yachts. But Michael Mahan is no hardened biker. This successful yacht broker is touring through the Rocky Mountains with two of his motorhead colleagues, heading for a rendezvous with Brian Tansey in Park City, Utah, his co-founder at Worth. A business trip, it is not. “I’m doing around 300 miles a day with our Seattle partner, Ray and our Newport partner, Jonathan.” Michael tells me with a quick grin. “It’s all mountains; we must have done about 700 turns today.” I ask him what he rides, and he hesitates. “It’s a Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX.” I must look blank, because he continues: “You know those bikes you see going past at 150mph? It’s one of those.” Then he quickly adds. “We’re super safe, though. I have to say that with Brian on the line.” The joshing goes back and forth for a moment. They’re like that, these two: totally complementary. When I ask them to pinpoint each other’s strong points, there’s no hesitation. “Michael has an amazing ability to defuse sticky situations,” says Brian. “When you’re in the quagmire, generally when you have a buyer and seller at odds with each other - he has a way of keeping everybody calm.” Brian is the organized one who takes care of the numbers and keeps the business ticking over in the background. But he’s also something of an alternative thinker. “He thinks out of the box when the rest of us hit the wall,” says Michael. “He has great ideas.”

The chemistry between the two is perhaps one of the keys to the runaway success that they’ve made of Worth Avenue Yachts. Now in only its tenth year, the brokerage business has gone from start up to industry leader and now houses 46 people, with locations in Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Monaco, Seattle, San Diego and Newport. It all began in 2011 when Michael walked into then-boss Brian’s office to hand in his notice. Far from trying to dissuade him, Brian agreed with his sentiments and they quit together. Appreciating each other’s working styles, they set out to look for a brokerage that would take them both. “The plan soon morphed into ‘let’s set up our own store’ with our own business model – more ethical, more professional.,” explains Brian. Betting big and aiming bigger, they gambled on a move to the rarified surroundings of Palm Beach. “After all, it’s one of the wealthiest zip codes in America.” They started to build a team that would share leads and information to benefit each client. “We wanted to be really careful about who we brought in; that everybody gelled and grasped our unique team-based approach.,” Michael explains. “To this day, no one in our firm has titles. Our sales meetings are just a huge wealth of sharing knowledge.”

Photography by Stuart Pearce

Photography by Giuliano Sargentini

This philosophy must be working because Worth lands the majority of its sales from repeat customers. And they’re not small sales, either: among the scores of sales, the 257ft Abeking & Rasmussen Eminence (asking price $80M) stands out. Then there’s the build of the stunning 223ft Benetti Seasense and a 180ft Newcastle to name just two. Both charter management and charter retail are booming as well. From the beginning, Brian and Michael were determined to offer a physical shopfront to potential clients and chose the most exclusive retail street in Palm Beach (Worth Avenue – hence the name). “We had a walk-in for whom we built a 68m Benetti,” says Michael. “His wife was one door down in Gucci and he came to look at something for himself.” Not that it was an easy deal – it took real experience to get over the line. But then Brian and Michael grew up around boats and have worked all their lives in the marine industry. They both started out in shipyards, albeit at opposite ends of the country, and Brian’s first job in Florida saw him commuting to work in a Chris-Craft 31 Scorpion – perhaps the boat equivalent of driving a Mustang.

Photography by Giuliano Sargentini

Now, after a decade of working for themselves, they’re dreaming bigger – perhaps a 45m Alloy Yachts for Michael and an 85ft Princess for Brian. “Brian’s could be my chase boat,” Michael jokes. It seems clear that their gamble has paid off. “We’ve always had the confidence in ourselves,” he adds. You‘ll be able to see that confidence in person at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 27 to 31. The team will be there with a selection of the show’s biggest yachts, ready to service all your boating needs. Find them on the face dock by Hall of Fame and Bahia Mar. In the meantime, the brokerage list is bulging with exceptional boats for sale, ranging from up to 300ft. And there’s a selection of the finest yachts available to charter as well. Backing it all is the experience of one of the broadest and most collaborative teams in the business. If they can’t find your dream boat, then she probably hasn’t been built yet - which is also something they can help you with. WorthAvenueYachts.com

ow more than ever, superyachts afford the privacy, luxury and freedom to escape the trials of the shore that many of us are craving. Offering a safe controllable environment, “the yacht” is a haven to cocoon inside – with the heady possibility of waking up in a new destination each morning and no concern of mixing with other travelers; providing a true home away from home to relax and unwind. This September, leading Dutch shipyard Heesen has revealed it will debut the newest in its 55m Steel Class – Moskito – at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show 2021 (22-25 September). Despite her name, this yacht is a wellness temple on water boasting fluid exterior lines penned by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects and chic interiors by renowned British studio Bannenberg & Rowell. Exuding an air of calm authority, extensive use of glass throughout provides an abundance of natural light. Floor-to-ceiling windows and open bulwarks illuminate interior amenities, whose sweeping sea-to-sky vistas immerse guests in the beauty of the environment. British design duo Bannenberg & Rowell have created sophisticated, bold interiors that use a blend of natural, noble tones with a tailored spatial arrangement to creates a sense of gravitas and ease. Traditionally crafted smoked Oak chevron parquet flooring, white Thassos, grey St. Laurent and ivory Travertine marble are used throughout, with warm bronze accent that underwrite fine workmanship and furnishings that Heesen are so well known for. “We wanted to take the breath away, without being aesthetically intimidating,” says Bannenberg. “That fine line between approachability and comfort. Something cool and interesting, but subtle.”

On the main deck lies the owner’s apartment, spanning a luxurious eighty-two square meters. The bespoke furnishings, of which there are many, include a special desk commissioned from GMS joinery in London. Oak parquet and eucalyptus veneers add a sense of continuity to the main deck color palette – which is soft, easy going and light in tone. A spiral staircase leads to four sumptuous ensuite cabins on the lower deck, to welcome guests on board. Designed to offer her visitors the best of yachting lifestyle, Moskito’s exterior guest spaces add up to some two hundred and fifty square meters. The sizeable sundeck will no doubt be the focal point at anchor or in port – complete with a pool, bar, seating and sunbathing areas. For dining and entertaining, the central table on the main deck can seat twelve, for relaxed or formal occasions with family and friends. “Our guiding philosophy was that the owner should be as happy hosting a black-tie dinner as lounging in their shorts,” says Bannenberg. Artworks have been sourced from British talents – from flowing porcelain forms by Fenella Elms, to Rose Vickers’ marquetry mosaics, and intricate paper collages by Hormazd Narielwalla.

Moskito’s crowning jewel is a unique dedicated wellness area is accessible via the opulent beach club, complete with sauna, seating, shower and shade – for spa treatments, rest and recovery. Teak decking underfoot and textured limestone panels contrast with reeded glass, creating a rich, intimate and relaxing environment. Hidden from view, down by the water, it offers every comfort imaginable, with a life-enhancing swim in the sea just a few steps away. High up on the bridge deck, a secluded skylounge offers a secret spot for periods of calm and meditation. The epitome of elegance on the water, Moskito also features the latest iteration of the ultra-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form. Developed by Heesen in partnership with Van Oossanen naval architects, this offers a high cruising speed, long range, and excellent hydrodynamic efficiency. Powered by IMO III-compliant MTU 8V 4000 M63s, she offers frugal fuel consumption of just 150 litres per hour at 11 knots. Arthur Brouwer, CEO of Heesen comments “The 55m is a very popular class and we are the only Northern European shipyard to offer such a yacht on spec. We are proud to be presenting such a fine example of Heesen’s DNA. Moskito is sporty, sleek, and timelessly elegant in design, while offering the best in performance and efficiency. She has the right balance of indoor and outdoor space – meaning ultimate interior comfort and luxury, with spacious alfresco spaces to enjoy the best of yachting lifestyle.” For a few lucky selected guests, Moskito will be available for charter via International Yacht Collection in the Mediterranean in summer and in the Caribbean in winter. his year, the 141.6-meter Nord (previously Project Opus) left the Lürssen shipyard and began her maiden voyage. Responsible for her stunning exterior and interior design is the Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard, who have given Nord her striking appearance with a bow design never before seen on a yacht. “Nord was designed with one idea in mind: she must cause strong emotions in every observer, not only through her sheer size, but with the design itself. No one should be left indifferent,” says Dan Lennard. “Whether you like the design or not, it must strike you. Nord is a serious ship first and foremost, but she also transcends the traditional language of yacht design. She is a warship wearing a tuxedo, an explorer with the elegance of a gentleman’s yacht. We have entered a new direction in serious yacht design.” “At Lürssen, we believe that to build a yacht it is vital to work as a team, and to execute such a comprehensive project, an excellent team is necessary,” says Managing Partner, Peter Lürssen.

In this case, the team consisted of the design team from Nuvolari-Lenard, Moran Yacht & Ship who supervised the build on behalf of the Owner, and, of course, the project team from Lürssen. “We are looking forward to Nord finding her place amongst her peers as a remarkable statement in large yacht construction, based on a strong design and expert engineering skills.” Moran Yacht & Ship brought in their vast spectrum of experience and consolidated knowledge. Moran says: “We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Owner of Nord on the delivery of his new vessel. Additionally, we would like to thank the workers of the Lürssen shipyard, as well as the design and build team on this tremendous accomplishment.” Lurssen.com

HMY YACHTS THE ALL NEW 64’ VIKING CONVERTIBLE

T

he Viking Yacht Company has been leading the industry in defining, and redefining, the ideal fishing and cruising convertible yacht since 1964. Pat Healey, the president, and CEO takes you inside the Viking plant in New Gretna, New Jersey to reveal their latest model. As usual, this company has executed industry-leading design, top-quality construction, impeccable performance, and tournamentwinning fishability. “We never stop – it’s that simple,” says President and CEO Pat Healey. “Every new model is an improvement from the last one because we’re a design- and engineering-driven company. We have the best team in the business, and this is what we do – design and build incredible boats.” Without further ado, HMY would like to introduce you to the all-new Viking 64’ Convertible! The Viking design team is constantly seeking new tools and technologies to build a better boat every day. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, the 64’s running surface has been optimized to achieve the best performance possible. Viking’s in-house CFD allows their team to run numerous virtual sea trials to fine-tune the shape of the hull bottom for increased efficiency. The hull has been built with an engineered composite of fiberglass fabrics and coring that’s vacuuminfused with vinylester resin. Great stiffness and strength are brought to the structure while minimizing weight utilizing a calculated resinto-fiberglass ratio. The structural bulkheads and fuel tanks (which are customized to the shape of the hull) are also resin-infused, and the hullto-deck is through-bolted every three inches and fiberglassed from inside for a rock-solid union.

The 64’ Convertible’s unbroken S-shaped sheer flows gracefully from bow to stern. The swept-back black-masked windshield, pronounced hull, and deckhouse feature lines, and distinctive hull-side vents give the 64’ an unmistakably Viking profile that is recognizable and admired around the world. The 64’ will also be available as an Enclosed Bridge model, featuring their signature design that includes a complete forward control station, its own luxurious salon with walnut cabinetry and HD TV, stairs from the salon to the bridge and a docking station on the aft deck.

The result of thousands of hours on the tournament trail, the 180-square-foot cockpit is clean, streamlined, and maximizes freedom of movement, with easy access to storage and service areas. The centerline lazarette hatch (available with power actuation) opens nearly 90 degrees for full viewability and access to the available Seakeeper 26 as well as the steering, trim tabs, and drain pumps. An aluminum backing plate is laminated into the cockpit sole for a fighting chair, rocket launcher, or table. The layout of the flybridge makes excellent use of space, providing a variety and abundance of seating and storage. In addition to the helm and two companion pedestal chairs, there’s lounge seating to port and starboard with storage below. A third two-person lounge with fold-down armrests (and a massive freezer beneath it) is integrated into the console’s forward end. In the four corners of the flybridge, you’ll find more smart storage solutions, including a sink and a refrigerated drink box. The interior of the Viking 64’ offers an ideal open layout with a walkway that extends in a straight line from the salon all the way to the forepeak, heightening the sense of interior depth and space. The L-shaped lounge (with storage underneath) provides plenty of room to stretch out and relax with an accompanying walnut cocktail table. To port, the dinette comfortably seats four adults. It sits on a raised platform that provides rod storage underneath while also enhancing the view out the tinted salon windows. LUCA DINI COLUMBUS SPORT 50

C

olumbus Yachts, a brand of Palumbo Superyachts, presents the new 50-meter Sport M/Y K2. The success of the SPORT line by Columbus Yachts, established in 2011 with the award-winning 40-meter models, is confirmed. Vertical bow and streamlined profile, stylistically this project has broken the mould of the time becoming an icon of sportiness and elegance. Today the fleet is enriched with a new 50-meter model characterized by the distinctive elements of this design which combine new aesthetic nuances with an engineering development of the hull to guarantee a high level of comfort even when cruising in rough sea conditions. Columbus Sport 50’s naval engineering was developed by Palumbo Superyachts in collaboration with the Hydro Tec studio, while the exterior and interior design is penned by Luca Dini Design & Architecture. Featuring several new solutions designed to the specific request of its experienced Owner who is on his third project with Palumbo Superyachts, M/Y K2 accommodates 11 guests in five comfortable cabins and 11 crew members sharing seven cabins. “The concept of this yacht mirrors the personality, style and approach to life of its owner. Elegant, refined, attentive, demanding, but also sporty, traveller and open-minded.”, comments Luca Dini, founder of the Luca Dini Design & Architecture studio.

From the naval engineering and architecture point of view, the lines of Columbus Sport 50 M/Y K2 are characterized by a razor-sharp vertical bow, with double-edged cross sections to improve seaworthiness and keep the boat dry even in rough sea conditions. “Requirements such as transatlantic range combined with the reduced draft to allow for shallow water cruising in the Bahamas, have implied searching for an optimization on the entire resistance curve, both at maximum contractual speed and at lower speed. Hull with an all-aluminium superstructure and 499 GT tonnage.” comments Eng. Cutolo of Hydro Tec, who adds: “Actually, the performance analysis at lower speeds has provided particularly interesting readings, with a consumption of about 70 l / h at 10 knots that is a particularly good result if we consider the hull characteristics.” The interior is clean, bright, harmonious and coherent. The layout has attractive outdoor spaces ideal for conviviality as they provide the flexibility of enjoying various daytime activities by easily transforming the sunpads into conversation seating sets or creating areas suitable for receiving guests. To maximise the versatility of each area, great attention was paid to shading solutions. On the two decks, bar and dining facilities are set up both indoor and outdoor. A comfortable entertaining area has been created in the upper deck, with a large TV screen, bar and a game table.

A swimming pool with Jacuzzi is located forward on the upper deck and can be reached from the cockpit through two large side walkways that turn the whole deck into a proper relaxation and entertainment area. The fitness section in the owner’s area forward on the main deck, spreads over 18 square meters and is equipped like a functional gym designed in every detail and complete with a hammam in the owner’s bathroom. The beach club, thanks also to the transformer platform with an approximately 4 square meter pop-up accessory automatically raising when the platform opens, offers a generous relaxation and entertainment area. Zyricote and Tanganyika Frisè, two wood essences with an exotic and decò flair, the reflections of lacquer and steel details, together with the soft textures of leather and fabrics modulate the atmosphere of any environment on board. The cappuccinocolored onyx and the white Lasa floor mat used in the bathrooms are also very impressive. The overall effect is completed by branded furnishings, with a predilection for the Fendi collection, though with a keen eye to the classic and tailoring tradition of great national companies. In the proposal, the notes of color are given by the selection of textile materials capable of harmoniously completing any environment, with attention to small details, while maintaining a strong masculine imprint. It is a precious interior, reserving pleasant surprises and welcoming with reassuring luxury. Another aspect particularly well developed from a technical perspective was the reduction of noise and vibrations reaching extremely low noise levels in the guest rooms and especially significant because obtained at a value of 85% of the maximum power of the propulsion system, therefore at a speed slightly higher than 20 knots. Powered by two 2000 HP MTU engines, M/Y K2 is able to reach a maximum speed of 21.5 knots, with a cruising speed of 17 knots and a wide range for transatlantic crossings. TEAM Italia’s multitouch dashboard, designed in collaboration with the Palumbo Superyachts team and the Captain of M/Y K2, was built on the concepts of safety and manoeuvrability, providing the captain with adaptability in any sea condition.

Basically, Columbus Sport 50 embodies two distinct souls that allow it to be an absolutely sporty boat in terms of maximum speed without compromising on comfort and range, as well as being absolutely in line with displacement type vessels when cruising at economic speed. The boat is equipped with a tender and jet ski respectively positioned astern of the lower deck (3.31 meter Seadoo) and at the bow (Castoldi Jet tender 21 of 6.5 meters). The tender is launched and hauled through a side opening in the hull. M/Y K2 has a latest generation entertainment system developed in collaboration with Videoworks. To allow external connections, two VSAT Sailor 900 High Power antennas have been installed, so as to count on full satellite signal reception at any angle the yacht is located, and three Cradlepoint 5G ready dual modems. The latter, thanks to the second extractable modem integrated in the device, will make it possible to switch to 5G technology, avoiding long work on board. Columbus Sport 50 M/Y K2 is expected to officially debut at the next Monaco Yacht Show in September and is available for charter with Fraser. LucaDini.com/en FraserYachts.com

FRASER THE WORLD’S LEADING SUPERYACHT BROKER

W

hile yachting has always been a favored activity for the world’s jet set, the pandemic has brought on a recordbreaking boom in buyers flocking to purchase these luxury vessels. “The surge is unprecedented,” said Raphael Sauleau, CEO of Fraser, the world’s leading yachting company. With more than 25 years in private wealth and maritime, Sauleau shares that Fraser’s data is staggering, unlike anything he’s seen before. 2021 is set to be another record-breaking year for Fraser and the best year ever in terms of number of yachts sold. So far, Fraser’s sales are up 209 percent in 2021 over 2020. To give a sense of the velocity, in 10 days alone Fraser sold 13 superyachts, vessels that are more than 79 feet in length. The company also represents more yachts for sale for owners than any other provider, and to date, over half the fleet Fraser started the year with has now been sold. On the charter side, the demand has been so competitive and immediate that charters offered by Fraser are being booked sometimes in as little as 10 days, compared to the pre-pandemic average time frame of three to 10 months. According to Fraser, 90 percent of the demand is directly related to COVID. “There is a pent-up need to get out and travel and get together with family and friends,” said Sauleau. “People want to celebrate coming out of lockdown by spending money on experiences that resonate with their loved ones - bringing everyone together and leaving all with memories that last a lifetime.” And with yachts being a self-contained vessel, they provide valuable privacy and safety that many are seeking after a year of lockdowns. Fraser is seeing an increase in habitual cruisers turn to charters over luxury cruising for the benefits of choosing their own itinerary and ability to control who’s around them.

While yachting is enjoyed around the globe, Americans are far and beyond leading this surge - buying and chartering yachts in record numbers. “It’s not just high-profile multimillionaires buying a large yacht anymore,” said Sauleau. “The U.S. market is the strongest it’s been in 20 years. Fraser sold four times more yachts than typical in the month of April alone and one American buyer closed on a multi-million yacht in a record 10 days.” Sauleau attributes this to the U.S. doing a fantastic job of getting everyone vaccinated, and after spending so long indoors, Americans’ appetite for traveling and going places is at an all-time high. As the world’s leading broker of superyachts, Fraser has been closing on an unprecedented amount of 80-foot plus vessels, selling for $10 million plus. The company has seen a similar trend for long-term charters that span two-to-three weeks, with charter fees well over the millions. This should come to little surprise, as Reuters reported that more money has flowed into the stock market in the last five months than in the last 12 years. And with 20-30 percent of this year’s buyers being firsttime yachters, many are learning that waiting and debating is no longer an option. Fraser has seen yachts sell prior to officially hitting the market, with some customers closing on their vessels before touring them in person. With demand so high, charters are also getting booked at lightning speed, leaving travelers who waited too long scrambling to find other options.

Sauleau recommends first-time buyers and charterers work with experienced brokers so they can guide customers through the process and ensure they’re choosing the right yacht, stating that “Buying a yacht is not just buying a work of art. It is buying yourself a new way of getting more from your life.” So, which waters are seeing an influx of yachters this year? The Western Mediterranean, which includes Monaco, France, Italy, Spain and Malta, became number one in popularity during the long summer season. It ranks high for superyachts due to its accessibility from Europe and America. Its natural beauty, glamour, idyllic islands and azure seas make it a famous yachting destination for good reason. Greece is also an incredibly popular destination again, having lifted its borders this past summer. The Caribbean is number two, especially for winter holidays, but gained in popularity over the summer season last year and this year, specifically the British Virgin Islands. Consistent trade winds, clear water, sun-filled days and easy navigating among 60 picturesque islands make it a favorite among both novices and captains. The BVI’s North Sound is often referred to as the Billionaire’s Playground. No matter where clients decide to set sail, Fraser ensures that they’ll do so in the best of hands. And with the yachting boom not slowing down anytime soon, the company expects to continue breaking records and helping customers indulge in their dreams. As Sauleau says: “there is truly nothing more special than going to bed and waking up in a new part of the world.” FraserYachts.com

fishing destination. At the push of a button, switch back to electric while in Zero-Emissions Trolling Mode and enjoy the fishing without exhaust.

Their cutting-edge technology is currently installed on Tankoa’s 52-meter yacht Bintador, which brought home the Innovative Award at the World Superyacht Awards in 2020. Other yachts have the hybrid installed too, from the Sanlorenzo SL86’ and 106’ to Perini Navi’s masterpiece, the 42-meter E-volution and major shipyards are following suit. The great race has begun. e-Motion offers serial and parallel full-range hybrid systems for yachts from 50-220 feet and offers three plug-and-play packages; the first is called The Comfort ZeroEmissions Hybrid Package with International Shore Power Mode, Navigation Fast Chare, and Zero Emission Mode. The second is the Sport Fishing Package, with one more mode, designed specifically for fishing yachts. Maneuver in electric mode while exiting the port, navigate quickly with diesel propulsion to your

The third is the company’s signature offering; The Platinum Hybrid Package, composed of ten Functional Modes for yacht owners who desire to have all the flexibility the e-Motion system can offer, including Zero Emissions Mode, Diesel Electric Navigation Mode, Fast Cruise Mode, and Generator Fast Charge, Power Boost Mode, Cruising Boost Mode, to name a few. Elevated interviewed the CEO of e-Motion to give our readers a glimpse of who is behind this hybrid company. It is the brainchild of Michele Maggi, an Italian marine propulsion and yacht expert based in the center of the marine industry on the Ligurian coast. With over 15,000 marine engines sales under his belt, he is the third generation in the Maggi family’s diesel marine motor business and is determined to guide the marine industry towards electrification. He is also a boat owner, PADI rescue scuba diver, and an angler with an immense passion and respect for the sea.

he electric green wave is rushing towards the yachting industry, ready or not. There are quite a few hybrid systems on the market, but none have come close to e-Motion Hybrid Systems.

“My family has been in the marine engine dealer for over 80 years. At 22, my father sent me off for a two-year internship at the MTU headquarters in Friedrichshafen, Germany. I pleaded with them to place me in the factory line assembling motors. I wanted to learn the mechanics of an engine from the first to the last piece and realized if I was going to sell engines, it was essential to know them from the inside and out. Armed with this knowledge, I would provide better after sales service and future propulsion solutions to shipyards.” Not only was he involved in engines, but he also founded International Yachts Collection in Fort Lauderdale (today one of the biggest yacht brokerage houses in the USA) as the dealer for North and South American for Italian shipyards. “In the late 1990s, I saw the opportunity to offer my expertise in the sector and to represent the shipyards on the American market- I was the dealer for Baglietto, Baia, Cantieri di Pisa, Fipa-Maiora, and San Lorenzo. However, after closing a deal and teaming up with Ferretti Group as their buyer for the entire engine room package in Italy, I sold the company and dedicated my attentions back to propulsion.” The first hybrid challenge was with Ferretti Group, the Mochi 23m. Long-Range in 2006. This was the beginning of his life-long fascination for marine electric propulsion for Maggi. By supplying Ferretti with all the different engine room components, Maggi had contacts with all the sub-suppliers. “Back in 2006, there was nothing on the market, no small industrialized inverters; therefore, we didn’t have variable speed generators, not to mention electric engines with clutches. In addition, the first lithium battery packs were just coming out with an electric bus. But I knew we were on to a concept that would be the future of marine propulsion and the end of ICE (internal combustion engines) engines. It is incredible to think the engine room layout has been the same concept for over 40 years; two main propulsion engines and two generators. It’s time to move forward because technology is here and I believe in five years time, the yachting world will become full-electric once the solid state batteries evolve.”

Perini Navi

Sanlorenzo 86’

He further explained a collaboration with his final client’s 52-meter yacht. “By sharing the way he used and navigated his yacht, by the end of the year, my client’s data revealed his yacht emitted the equivalent of two 10-meter boats of 450 hp. How is that possible? He used our system in fullelectric mode and ran on batteries. Nearly 70% of a yacht’s maneuvers can and should be carried out in full-electric. Because for the majority of the time, he’s running on batteries, and he uses full-electric, which today is already possible with an autonomy of up to 50 to 60 miles a day.Typically, a yacht of that dimension moves about 20- or 30 miles a day, not more than that.” Fast-forward to 2021, e-Motion is the leader in serial and parallel full range hybrid propulsion for yachts from 50-220 ft. The technology advances in the past decade are mind-spinning. With e-Motions user-friendly interface, the captain pushes a button, and the yacht automatically switches from full diesel-propulsion to electric mode, or even to diesel-electric propulsion. “Today, it makes perfect sense to electrify yachts. The advantages are too many for the environment and for yacht owners to ignore. In the past six years, we have reduced the size of the dimension of the hybrid components by 70 %, and our system is the equivalent in weight and space of the existing engine room, and with the serial hybrid, we can reduce the dimensions even further. With our platinum package, you can save 35-65% of yearly CO2 emissions and fuel. The e-Motion’s hybrid is pre-assembled, ready for installation in all serial production yachts, and plug-and-play ready—the installation time is no different than the traditional engine room. NOBISKRUG’S ARTEFACT A CLASS OF HER OWN

D

rawing upon its 115-year of maritime history, Nobiskrug has packed a wealth of eco-focused features on board that aim to “set new standards for engineering driven stewardship”. Its hybrid propulsion helps to reduce the yacht’s fuel emissions – one of the owner’s key requirements – but the advanced DC bus smart power management system allows the vessel to fully integrate multiple sources of power from solar cells, variablespeed generators and lithium batteries, which allow the yacht to operate for a limited time without internal combustion engines. It’s important to mention that the yacht is designed to draw on any future technologies, such as fuel cells. Artefact can travel short distances on just its batteries alone; quite some feat for an 80m yacht. It also features dual azimuthing pods that enable dynamic positioning to hold the boat in place without dropping anchor, therefore protecting sensitive seafloors and marine ecosystems. Artefact’s wastewater systems allow reuse in technical operations to further reduce impacts, and in a climate where yacht regulations are tightening up, Artefact was also the first superyacht built to IMO Tier-III emissions standards. Exterior designed by Canadian designer Gregory C. Marshall, Artefact continues Nobiskrug’s reputation for being a visionary shipyard that builds ground-breaking custom designs. Flanked by a striking glass façade the yacht makes a bold and radical architectural statement. Both high-tech and aesthetically pleasing, Artefact has been designed to try and reshape the future of yachting by showcasing state-ofthe-art technology and innovative power and performance opportunities. A contemporary and sophisticated interior by British design studio Reymond Langton Design complements the futuristic façade. All eight guest cabins, accommodating up to 16 guests in total, are flooded with natural light providing an impressive space to wake up to. Serviced by a total of 24 discreet crew, the main entertaining spaces provide a clear connection to the outdoor marine environment and a view of the far-reaching horizon, and beyond. The interior layout and design fully integrate with the distinctive window shapes to create a holistic guest experience that works in harmony with the large amounts of custom and curved glass featured inside and out.

An incredible 750sqm of glass has been used in total, weighing a seismic 70 tonnes. To offset the significant weight, the steel hull is unusually paired with a superstructure made) hightech composites (fiberglass). Using a composite superstructure has enabled curved shapes to be moulded to create an interesting exterior design, and even frees up future owners to hugely alter the superstructure design should they ever want to. The primary ones being weight, solar heat gain, optical properties and reflections of sound and noise. The noise and vibration on board of Artefact far exceed industry standards. Nobiskrug’s core business today comprises the development and construction of largefully custom superyachts ranging from 60m plus.. It is recognised for pioneering new technologies, radical designs and visionary materials, and Artefact is a celebrated achievement that showcases it all. Nobiskrug’s most notable superyacht to date is the iconic 143m Sailing Yacht A, but Artefact has created a class of her own.

TROPIC OCEAN AIRWAYS WHERE LUXURY TAKES FLIGHT

I

n thinking about where to travel next and how you’ll get there, still navigating the unfamiliar waters of COVID restrictions, why not add some gusto to your arrival experience? There’s something nostalgic about seaplane travel that’s truly romantic. It is both a bucket-list mode of travel, yet accessible enough to do over and over again. The first successful powered seaplane takeoff and landing was performed by a Frenchman in 1910. Since then, seaplanes went from being used in military combat to leisure craft, connecting even the most remote destinations. They have the ability to perform measures no other aircraft can and that remains ultimately cool. Tropic Ocean Airways continues to connect guests with uniquely positioned locales utilizing its fleet of Cessna Caravan amphibious aircraft. Beyond islands and lakes, this summer has been full of travel to The Bahamas, where they bring guests directly to their yachts. The thrill of the water landing experience isn’t just for the guests; yacht crew also have the ease of welcoming guests directly aboard to begin their epic getaway. Now the turquoise waters of the Exumas serve as both a runway and your waterway!

This type of travel is the kind that sticks. It’s the kind that you want to repeat and never travel any other way. And you’re in luck because Tropic is rapidly expanding its fleet and its geographic footprint, with service in the Northeast, Panama and the Caribbean. The only challenge you might have is booking the days you want because demand is so high. However, you’re in luck, because you can now purchase bulk hours to use across locations and receive preferential bookings. Summer travel is hot and the fall is lining up to be just as robust. he British Virgin Islands have long sent a siren song to salty seafarers both near and far. The area’s spectacular innate beauty, it’s even-tempered weather and easygoing, undulating ocean paint a picture that is pretty much impossible to fault. Scatter this canvas with emerald islands, white sand beaches, tropical sunlight and the everpresent trade winds and you have the destination that dreams are made of. The aforementioned trade winds blow at varying strengths year round, moderating the tropical rainforest climate and resulting in temperate ocean and air temperatures ten months of the year. The BVI certainly deserves its title as the boating capital of the world. Carefree Cruising Aptly named after the epic adventurer, the Sir Francis Drake Channel runs the length of the British Virgin Islands and offers no end of protected passages in and around Tortola, Virgin Gorda and the neighboring islands. This makes boating in the BVI not only breathtakingly beautiful, but also exceptionally safe for both seasoned sailors and absolute beginners. The proximity of one island to the next means tomorrow’s anchorage is always in plain sight, making for carefree cruising from one blissful spot to the next. The islands, with the exception of coral- and limestoneformed Anegada, were once part of a submerged mountain range created through volcanic activity, so are dramatic and diverse in their topography. Unlike many comparable tropical destinations, the islands under British jurisdiction are neither overcrowded nor commercialized. In fact, of the 60 islands, cays and rocks that form the archipelago, only 15 or so are inhabited. The BVI offers not only beaches but rainforest, salt ponds, mangroves and miles of coral reef to explore. The entire area is peppered with stunning, secret spots, and the voyage to locate them is just as delightful as the discovery.

A Heavenly Home Base While there are few Caribbean getaways that capture the essence of the islands better than a week aboard a charter yacht, the salt life is not for everyone. Though many of us still crave the wild wind in our hair, sharing a head is a hard pass, we want a truly dry towel after a truly hot shower, and a bed with a pocket-sprung mattress. And in that there is no shame. A boating vacation, to our minds, can mean buzzing from one tropical highlight to the next, spending all day island hopping and exploring, then returning to home base where an in-suite massage, delectable dining experience and king bed await. Spread across 400 consciouslypreserved acres on the northeasterly tip of Virgin Gorda rests an opulent home base from which to adventure. Accessible only by boat or helicopter, Oil Nut Bay is a luxury, multi-generational community like no other. The property offers a collection of secluded villas and suites, each with their own private kitchen, laundry, swimming pool, and lushly landscaped grounds, as well as the option of full concierge, personal chef, housekeeping and butler services. Resort amenities are first-class. This dynamite destination boasts a variety of recreational adventures, unique experiences, both fine and informal dining opportunities, and a wide range of health and wellness services. On days when you feel like a brief boating break, pursuits such as hiking and yoga, snorkeling, kayaking, kitesurfing, and fishing are all at our finger tips.

State-of-the-Art Marina Oil Nut Bay’s positioning in the coveted North Sound region of Virgin Gorda make it the ideal base from which to explore the rest of the archipelago. Your journey begins at the Marina. Tucked into the protected inlet of Deep Bay, Oil Nut Bay’s marina offers secure alongside mooring for yachts up to 130 feet (40 meters) and a draft of up to 10 feet (3 meters). Berths are privately owned by Oil Nut Bay homeowners and can be reserved for anything from a single night up to your entire stay. Ten mooring balls are available in Deep Bay for boats up to 120 feet (37 meters). The property’s dedicated Dock Master provides concierge Marina services, including top-notch utilities, double reverse osmosis potable water, ice, provisioning services and a helipad accommodating two twin-jet helicopters for residents and guests. Deep Bay has two access routes all mapped out – one for regular draft vessels and another for those that require a little more draft than usual.

The Marina neighborhood is a hub of hustle and bustle, anchored by island chic bar and restaurant Nova. The very essence of easy-going island elegance, Nova offers al fresco dining, ocean-side lounge spaces, overwater hammocks and daybeds, a suspended swimming pool and designer bar serving the best handcrafted cocktails this side of the equator. Beyond this is a coffee shop, provisioning market, island boutique and games room. Marina expansion plans are currently underway and by December 2021 a day spa will be added to the neighborhood’s offerings.

If luxury land living with a direct line of sight to your boat is what you’re looking for, then the Marina Villas are right up your alley. These contemporary, beautifully-appointed two-bedroom villas sit just above the Marina Village and are mere steps away from the docks, decadent dining and a little indulgent retail therapy. When it comes to planning the perfect vacation, it’s often impossible to please everyone. But the best of both worlds does collide. Oil Nut Bay is the perfect pairing of land and sea, luxury and adventure to satisfy all preferences and partialities. Start planning your family vacation now!

HERMES SPEEDSTER MESSENGER OF THE GODS ON THE WATER

H

ermes Speedster is a neat classicstyled runabout with traits reminiscent from the 1959 Porsche 356 and the gentleman-style runabout boats of the 30s’. The Hermes Speedster successfully combines luxury, efficiency, style and comfort. Seven Seas Yachts was founded in 2011 and is based in the UK. In 2012 the first 17 meter yachts the Legend 54 was created, the Legend 56 Fly and Hermes GranTurismo followed. The development of the Hermes Speedster started in 2015, while the production of the model started in 2017. Furthermore, in 2018 the Hermes Speedster was awarded as boat of the year 2018 by HISWA. Now in 2021, the Hermes Speedster is sold worldwide. It took its name from the Ancient Greek God Hermes. The messenger of the Gods, son of Zeus and one of the twelve principal gods of Olympus. Also God of speed, wealth, luck and travel.

The Hermes Speedster comes in various color combinations. The customer can customize the color of the hull, real leather, carpet and convertible top. This way the customer has the opportunity to cruise on a unique Hermes Speedster. Furthermore, the owner has the opportunity to have his/her name or the name of the boat engraved or embroidered on several parts of the boat. Each piece of the interior, from the seats and the steering wheel to the speakers and the switches, is especially designed and hand crafted with attention to detail. Due to the convertible top, in a few seconds, you can enjoy your boat, despite poor weather conditions.

The Hermes Speedster is a very unique boat, looks wise and also performance wise. Thanks to the patented Amfihull, the Hermes Speedster is able to cruise from 5mph up to 45mph, as the boat maintains at all speeds very low trim angles between 2 and 2.8 degrees. Unlike other boats there is no specific speed at which the Hermes transitions to plane, instead as the speed increases the boat gradually comes out of the water maintaining a nearly horizontal attitude.

As there is very low drag resistance and no hump coming on plane, the jet drive offers you insane acceleration. Considering all the above, the very low center of gravity and the surprisingly low weight, Hermes ensures a very soft, safe and fun ride. The Hermes Speedster is powered by a Rotax 1503NA 155hp and has a top speed of 45mph. With only 0.27m (0.9ft) of draft, the Hermes Speedster can access any exotic beach despite how shallow the waters may be. The incredible low weight of 680kg, the jet drive propulsion and the low draft will let you take it out on the sand with ease and comfort. Its LOA is 6.75m and the beam is only 1.8m, its dimensions and its low weight makes it really easy and comfortable to tow the Hermes Speedster with any car. www.Hermes-Craft.com

FEADSHIP PROJECT 2024 PURE PLEASURES

F

eadship and Nauta Design have unveiled a cool opening for fast decision makers with the 72.60-metre Project 2024. All the investments in time and resources have been made for the core engineering and naval architecture on a Feadship that can be ready for the 2024 summer season. Project 2024 responds to requests from owners looking to enjoy Feadship safety and comfort in the shortest timeframe without being closely involved in the technical aspects of a custom build. These people also have no wish to compromise on the bespoke premium quality choices that Feadship offers in terms of on-board facilities. Feadship and Nauta Design have developed a warm relationship working on previous builds and Project 2024 integrates their shared expertise in an exclusive design dedicated to enjoying close proximity to the sea. A prime example is the spectacular transom with foldout side wings, an island playground with a 3.3-metre pool, seating zones with sun & shade and steps into the sea. The main deck above is connected with gently sloping stairs, making it safe to have children playing on the platform and in the pool while the adults keep a restful eye from above.

The beach club continues forward into the lower deck interior, with an extra lounge area and another fold-down terrace on the starboard side. More room for relaxation is created once the tender and toys are launched, while steam showers and a sauna create an irresistible wellness area.

a full-height food lift cover all decks. The design for Project 2024 envisages sleeping twelve guests in the master stateroom, a VIP and four guest suites. Clients can arrange things differently if desired, one of countless options that include adding a helicopter platform to the upper deck and designing the entire interior style.

Another alluring aspect of Project 2024 is the way forward areas are linked to optimise the owner experience. The full-beam main deck master suite is an oasis of privacy with a giant bedroom, his & her walk-ins and bathrooms, and a lounge with a balcony. A stairway offers direct access to a sequestered outdoor area on the bow, complete with pool, sun beds and intimate dining.

Like all aspects of Project 2024, the timeless exterior is fully future proof with a low profile, harmonious lines and clean architecture. While everything is in place to start creating a Feadship that will see the light of day in just three years’ time, this motoryacht is set to bring joy to all who step aboard for decades to come.

The owners will have many high-class facilities to share with family and friends among the 564 square meters of luxury spaces. Seamless movement is ensured between the large main deck aft, with its delightful open and shaded areas, and main saloon. This social hub is divided between a lounge and dining area, with full-height windows and 270-degree views. The option exists to add fold-out balconies to this lounge.

Project 2024 can comfortably sleep twelve guests in true Feadship style. You can arrange the staterooms and suites as you see fit: it’s designed on the premise of two guests in the super-spacious master stateroom, two in the delightful VIP and eight spread over the four guest suites (twins or doubles). There are also fine accommodations for sixteen crew members in the eight cabins on the lower deck while the captain’s cabin is found on the bridge deck.

The amidships sky lounge on the upper deck is another fine spot to mix with outdoor dining facilities aft. The sun deck offers three further zones to unwind while an elevator for guests and

This unique project can be ready for delivery in time for the 2024 summer season. Yes, that’s right: A brand-new Feadship ready for you to enjoy within just three years.

Since their founding three decades ago, the company’s goal has been to manufacture the best-built boats in their distinctive sportfishing niches. Each Scout hull is a true original, as their in-house research and design team works closely with engineering to take concepts from blueprint to production more efficiently, growing their company’s world-class reputation for quality, strength, durability and value. From their design to your destination, there’s nothing like a Scout. Industry-first innovations, uncompromising build quality and precise attention to detail are fused into each model. Alluring lines that perform on top of the water like the prize catch you’re chasing under it. Experiences waiting to be had. Lasting memories to be made. Heads to turn. Choosing Scout means you’ve made the decision to be aboard the elite. If this is your first, those before you will tell you it won’t be your last. Taking the family out for the day, fishing your offshore sweet spot or chasing the sun down along the coast… a Scout is all, and can do all. Creating award-winning models that separate us from the industry mediocrity first starts with having the finest craftsmanship; unparalleled boat building experience that spans our entire manufacturing facility. Knowledge to know how to do things the right way. Talent to know how to do those things better. Courage to do the old things a new way. Every Scout team member that has a hand on your boat has pride and precision in what they’re building, and for whom they’re building. Glide your fingertips anywhere across the model. Feel 100% hand-laid fiberglass construction, the luxury of the upholstery, the richness in the accents. Feel the clean design inside and out, all the way to the completely-finished bilges and underside of all doors, lids and hatches. Bow to stern, port to starboard, above deck and below, everywhere you look and touch you’re experiencing the Scout difference.

Standing at the helm, you feel the passion. Wrap your fingers around the steering wheel and you’re not just touching any boat. Are you aboard a boat, at the wheel of a high-performance luxury sports car, or inside a private jet? Questions you ask yourself as you tour their models and realize just how different Scout truly is from the competition. Scout’s foundation is comprised of integrity and innovations. They want to make your on-the-water experience like no other, so they are continually developing trend-setting, clever designs that bring a modern, sophisticated edge to your boat. Improved efficiency and performance. Elevated comfort and safety. All creating a heightened status. Timeless styling and painstaking perfection are fused into every model built. Scout continues to be first-to-market with their industry-leading innovations and groundbreaking ideas. Scout is a fresh, vibrant company that’s changing the history of boating by bringing you the future of boating. Scout has developed innovative hull designs that are used across their ineup. As they designed larger LXF’s (luxury center console models 33’ and up), they made a critical decision to introduce cutting-edge Epoxy Infusion and Carbon Epoxy Construction techniques into these highest-performing Scout Stepped Hull models, while simultaneously pairing them with the finest sophisticated blend of appointments and technologies. The S-Class Series was born. S-Class signifies the upper echelon of our line-up - the highest level of luxury - similar to what you experience with high-end luxury automobiles.

Simply put, these Epoxy Infusion and Carbon Epoxy Construction processes are industry bar-raising manufacturing processes. Their 33’ and up models utilizing these processes are built like a tank but perform like a jet. These techniques have been used in the aerospace industry for years but have typically been a historically-unpopular process to marine manufacturers for numerous reasons: materials cost, labor skill, and lack of technology to implement, just to name a few. Less than 1% of marine manufacturers utilize these processes. The hulls of the 330 LXF & 355 LXF are epoxy-infused by attaching multiple feeder lines which are monitored by their skilled craftspeople to inject the exact amount of epoxy necessary into the fiberglass and core; then they are vacuum bag infused (creating the strongest epoxy-to-glass ratio possible), eliminating air pockets and preventing unnecessary excess epoxy. Once fully infused, they are then baked at 135°-140°F for eight hours to post-cure the hull while they’re still secured in the mold. They take this process even further on the hulls of our 380 LXF & 420 LXF, where they use Carbon Fiber/E-Glass as the main material used in the Epoxy Infusion process. The 530 LXF is built using this process on not only the hull, but also the deck, hardtop, and flybridge superstructure. But why use this process in the first place if it’s more expensive? The answer is abundantly clear when you realize the strength-to-weight ratios of the models. They’re second to none. Our Epoxy Infusion Construction process removes the brittle, excess fat of the resin to create a boat that weighs a little less when compared to other outdated competitor processes, but at the same time provides an even stronger, more stable structure. With a lighter, stronger stepped hull comes higher performance. This is the reason our models consistently out-perform competitive models in their class while being rigged with equal (or even less) horsepower. High performance with increased fuel efficiency and cruising speeds (not to mention cost savings both at the pump as well as the overall cost of owning the boat). Scout has stronger, sexier, faster hulls. The Epoxy Infusion Construction process allows us to create large, stunning hull profiles (even black) while maintaining a “Class-A finish”. The Scout customer family continues to spread across the world. If you’re ready to upgrade and join their growing family…then you’re ready to Discover More. ScoutBoats.com

CASTLEROCK CARBON CAT BUILT WITH CONVICTION

T

he world of rigid bottom inflatable boats is entering an exciting new era with the release of the highly innovative Castlerock Carbon Cat. Australian designed and New Zealand built, the Castlerock Carbon Cat is the brainchild of Dan Oatley, a member of one of Australia’s most well known boating families. Dan is no newcomer to the world of boats, large and small. After being on the water in small sailing dinghies and runabouts as a youngster he went on to be one of the youngest commercial mariners. Dan’s maritime studies started with his recreational boat licence when he was 12 years old moving onto completing the highest Captains qualification, an Unrestricted Ship Masters. During his time as a seafarer, he has sailed as a Navigation Officer aboard the 152,000 tonne cruise Liner, Queen Mary 2. He has also

been the master of Superyachts, crossed the Atlantic 14 times and cruised to the North Pole. Dan has sailed in the last three Sydney to Hobart yacht races aboard his late grandfather, Bob Oatley’s recordbreaking SUPER MAXI, Wild Oats X1. He steered the yacht across the finish line to Win the 2018 race. “High-performance RIBs have always appealed to me,” Dan said. “I’ve seen plenty of them during my travels, and I can say there is nothing like the Castlerock Carbon Cat. It is a highly efficient design that is as easy to handle at high speed as it is at its cruising speed.” Constructed from and Hypalon, the Castlerock Carbon being described as RIBs.”

carbon fiber 5.3-meter-long Cat is already “the Ferrari of

“I set out to design and build the high speed, stable and visually appealing RIB and I’m certain that target has been achieved”, Dan Oatley said.

“This is due primarily to the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic features that I have been able to incorporate in design, along with the benefits that come with carbon fibre construction. This boat ticks every box in its category when it comes to recreational boating.” Powered by a Mercury four-stroke 115hp Pro XS outboard, the Castlerock Carbon Cat cruises comfortably at 45 knots and has a top speed of 60 knots. Some of the most honorable features of the boat are the attention to detail, the craftsmanship and its seaworthiness. Not only does the Carbon Cat incorporate racing yacht features, its innovative tunnel hull design is very stable at high speeds due to the custom hull profile that maximizes the aerodynamic lift while reducing hydrodynamic forces. Perfect for recreational boating, spearfishing, towing water sports and racing. www.CastleRockCarbon.com @CastleRockCarbonCat

rue to their name, you’ll find World Cat’s on virtually every ocean and lake in the world. Over 80,000 customers across the globe can be found enjoying World Cat catamarans. They’ve chosen their boats because World Cat delivers a smoother, more stable, more enjoyable experience from entertaining at the dock to navigating the deepest waters. Today, World Cat is the largest maker of power catamarans in the world. Located in Tarboro, North Carolina, their boats are precision crafted in a state-of-the-art 140,000 square foot facility. While building an array of boats in different sizes and configurations, each is a reflection of their mission is to deliver the smoothest ride on water – making boating more enjoyable and giving boaters the comfort and confidence to cruise, fish, dive, and explore the water world around them.

From the South Pacific to Siberia, World Cats have safely carried thousands of boaters over tens of thousands of miles. Shouldn’t you share in that experience? If you’re a boater, you know about the pounding, slapping, exhausting ride that a monohull boat subjects you to. But, with a World Cat power catamaran, you get a smoother, more stable ride. That means no more physical abuse – for you or your family and friends. You can stay on the water longer, and go farther. You’ll come back with more energy, and fewer bruises. And, along with that comfort, you’ll have the confidence to head out in conditions that keep other boaters at shore. Most new models start in the R&D department. But the 400 Series began with an ideal...to design and develop the most sophisticated and customizable catamaran models on the market. A catamaran model that surrounds you with a yacht-like feel with lush appointments, expansive room, and infused with technology.

With an initial $3 million investment, they set out to create the perfect catamaran, one that would not only meet their World Cat standards, but also one that would exceed the customer’s standards by offering a customizable model. The ability to choose your soft goods and fabric, choose your hardsurface materials, your colors, and even choose the perfect set up for your boating experience with customized configurations. Why invest in creating a highly customizable model? Because these custom configurations provide the ability to adapt to each owner’s specific needs. For instance, there are 12 different transom configurations common to all three models in the Custom Yacht Division resulting in 36 different versions of the 400’s - ranging from a luxurious cruising dual console with enclosed head and separate stateroom to a true offshore center console with sleigh seating and a sporty upper station. Whether you’re looking for a 60-gallon live well, chiller box, bait rigging station, dive tank storage or additional seating, there is a combination that fits any owner’s usage. If a crew wants to dive, cruise, fish or just spend a leisurely day out on the water, there is a design that can fit any need. www.WorldCat.com

AZIMUT GRANDE 100 DESIGNED BY TG-STUDIO

T

G-Studio was appointed to personalize, accessorize and interior design this brand new Azimut Grande 100 yacht which was freshly delivered from Italy to a boating enthusiast in Hong Kong. TGStudio had designed the owners apartment and office before and were delighted when asked to help with the interiors for this yacht. The brief was to personalize the interior and breathe in life and taste. No budget was set but TGStudio wanted to be economical considering that it was a brand new boat. The main internal entertaining area is located on the main deck and consists of a living area and dining area. The living area seats 8 comfortably and consists of two sofas opposite each other. The beige fabric was kept for the first season and a new coffee table with bespoke poufs that slide underneath were introduced. New cushions, sculptures, semi precious stones and picture frames were

carefully selected. A saddle leather wrapping it around the stainless steel shelves restraints was added to soften the look. The bespoke rug is a studio design and introduces soft green colors balanced by the jungle cushions on the sofa. New side tables from B&B Italia feature the cyclone lamp, another TG product. In the dining area, they removed the bland white leather panels located on either side of the mirror/TV wall and introduced real bronze panels with an imprint of shagreen. The panels were manufactured in England by a specialist called ANKA. The dining table top was replaced with a composite top consisting of a MDF base and a slab of Arrabascato marble on top. The edges thin out and are chamfered not to create sharp corners. To avoid having to replace all chairs, they kept six of the dining chairs and added the Husk Armchair from B&B Italia on either end, upholstered in canary leather, to introduce punctuation and a bit of fun.

The rear of the main deck boasts the exceptional game and TV room. It features 5 skylights panelled in light oak. The existing furniture did not meet TS-Studio’s expectation, so they replaced all pieces from the room, apart from the coffee table. The coffee table is a feat of engineering. It is a multi-functional piece, able to move up or down and can fold to create more space - a feature too good to be dismissed. The main wall was covered with bespoke manufactured panels in Elitis fabric which was detailed with individual bronze studs creating and interesting patterns which also separates the 3 framed pieces of art - 300 year old sea charts found in an antiques shop in London. The main sofa is an adapted Imprimatur from Maxalto, the symmetrical side-sofas are Feel Good in Tricot Tip Fabric. TG designed the bespoke rug Chrysler Gold, available through Creatus, which brings together all fabrics in this room. The room was accessorized with blue bespoke cushions from the Rug Company. Accessories are from Linley. The table lights are Giacometti from Porta Romana, a real find, adding a sculptural note to this very comfortable room. A main feature of the yacht is its large sun deck. The existing cushions were upholstered in Herringbone Jacquard from Hermes. Deco cushions, available from Curatus, were added to complete the styling - two sets of blue cushions in Cape Cod and Birds of Paradise fabrics from Holly Hunt. The cushions were weighted with rice to prevent them from flying off board during transit. Accessories were hand selected in London and Hong Kong to fit the personality of the client.

The main cabin received a dark racing green carpet and new panels on the headboard covered in H Cube by Hermes Paris. The circular armchairs in the distance were upholstered with Smoking Room Velvet from Amy Somerville on the back and ALMA leather on the base. The aim was to introduce richer finishes throughout this spacious room. The blanket on the bed is the ultimate luxury accessory, featured by Meissen in their home section, it is embroidered with their logo and is made out of cashmere. A simple and stunning design made out of solid metal, the bedside wall lights are from Kelly Wearstler’s Precision Collection and were imported from California. Door handles are leather wrapped available from Olivari and the bed linens are from Frette. The front cabin received a deep blue velvet silk carpet, adding depth to the luxurious space. Wall panels behind and opposite the bed were upholstered in Paddock Carbone from Hermes Paris; a beautiful patterned silk fabric offering great detail and color. Altogether, the TG Studio team brought the clients design dreams to life about this bespoke Azimut Grande 100 Yacht. TG-Studio.co.uk AzimutYachts.com

VAN DAM CUSTOM BOATS THE WORLD’S FINEST WOODEN BOATS

F

allen from a stack of archives, a design of a boat was found by the daughter of Fredrick Ford, a Naval Architect of the Great Lakes region. “When the smaller design slipped from the stack of my father’s drawings we were just beginning to catalogue after his passing in 2014, I saw a 31’ powerboat I knew I wanted to show Steve (Van Dam)”, said Susan Ford. This design is what inspired the latest build at Van Dam Custom Boats, Dreamboat. But it wasn’t fate or luck that brought that boat design to the hands of the crew at Van Dam. Naval Architect, Fred Ford, and co-founder of Van Dam Custom Boats, Steve Van Dam, partnered on many boats in the early stages of what’s now become the craftsmanship of “The World’s Finest Wooden Boats”. After opening their first workshop in 1977, Van Dam Custom Boats started their portfolio with the construction of five commissioned sailboats. Star and Star’s Echo, two of those sailboats, were designed by Fred for he and his family. Star’s Echo was especially crafted for his daughter, who is also commissioning the build in progress, Dreamboat. “I’ve known Steve since he built Star (Wooden Boat Magazine Issue #54) for dad and Star’s Echo for me,” added Susan. The partnership between Fred and Steve has since produced a gallery of intricately customized boats. Fred and Steve again worked together in the late 80’s to build Van Dam’s first power boat – Flicker, and iconic Hacker replica. Flicker was a catalyst for success, creating waves for the company to enter into the powerboat industry. Simply specializing in the craftsmanship of cold molded custom boats, Van Dam has no limitations to the type of build requested. Their last three commissioned builds have ranged from a 44’ sailing yacht, a 24’ gentleman’s racer, to their current build Dreamboat, a 38’ sedan cruiser.

Dreamboat will be capable of playing with boats much bigger than her own 389’ stature. Her twin Volvo IPS drives will produce 600HP to cut through the waves of the Great Lakes, and the joystick system will make this boat incredibly nimble and intuitive to use in close quarters. To eliminate boat roll, the Seakeeper will keep her steady while out on the water. The lighting and Garmin electronics package are cutting edge, and the Czone system will make the lights and electrical systems completely customizable. However, the real beauty of this boat lies in its design and level of detail throughout the boat. The designers & craftsmen at Van Dam are always up for the challenge to build the world’s finest wooden boats, and their attention to detail is unmatched. “Once you’ve owned a Van Dam boat, you’re spoiled for life because nothing can compare,” said Susan Ford.

At the start of 2021, co-founders Jean & Steve Van Dam sold the business to the second-generation leaders, Erika & Ben Van Dam. After 44 years of business, they decided it was time to hand the helm to the next generation. “We couldn’t be more excited at the opportunity to lead this business into the future. We are incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing team, both in talent and attitude, and we are especially grateful to Susan for continuing the legacy our fathers started,.” said Ben Van Dam. The succession has been in transition for years, with Ben serving as President of the company since 2016. Jean & Steve remain as pillars of the company identity, taking on the role of consultants and regulars in the shop. “Through Ben and I, second generation in both families, the creative partnership between my dad and Steve continues as Dreamboat comes alive in the hands of the world’s best boat builders,” said Susan Ford. Dreamboat is scheduled to launch in 2022. Naval Architect Donald Blount and the design team at Van Dam Custom Boats took Fred’s original 1971 design and created the plans for Dreamboat. Van Dam Custom Boats have a lifetime guarantee, made for generational enjoyment. “The design team at Van Dam Custom Boats, have created a living legacy in Dreamboat,” said Susan Ford, “From dream to design to delivery, if you love boats, this is your dream team!” Crafting “The World’s Finest Wooden Boats” since 1977, Van Dam makes only one of each custom build. “There are no replicas or repeats. When you own a Van Dam, you own the only one in the world.,” states Jeremy Pearson. “Each of our boats are privately commissioned and built specifically to the wishes and needs of their owner. Every detail in the boat has been considered with the owners input and wishes in mind. Every part is unique and our design team and craftsmen relish the opportunity to dive into the details. We walk through the process with our customers from concept to creation and beyond.” www.VanDamBoats.com

TURQUOISE YACHTS M/Y BLUE II

Photography by: ©Guillaume Plisson

T

urquoise-built, André Hoek-designed 56 meter explorer M/Y Blue II has some beautiful new pictures to share with the world. In this Guillaume Plisson shoot, she went on full display with her explorer characteristics coming to light in challenging weather conditions. Built at Turquoise Yachts in Istanbul, this unique vessel is somewhat reminiscent of classic steam ships, yet she is designed and built to be an exploration yacht for the 21st century incorporating state-of-the-art technology. Blue II is a fusion of old and new. Her exterior styling is by Hoek Design, predominantly known for penning exclusive sailing yachts. Blue II has the distinction of being Hoek Design’s first and only motor yacht project. Clearly, her profile, horizontal lines, and gracious curves bear the DNA of grand historical sailing yachts. Designated ice-class 1B, Blue II is a very special vessel, capable of cruising the Mediterranean or exploring the Arctic, in comfort and safety. She has optimal sea keeping characteristics and is equipped with IMO Tier III diesel electric propulsion. Special features include generous under-deck storage for two sizeable tenders. With an interior volume of 785 GT, the yacht boasts an immense amount of varied and functional space over four decks affording guests ultimate comfort for extended cruising.

A stand out in a sea of conventional white superyachts, Blue II dares to be different both in design and purpose. She is the first IMO Tier 3 compliant and first ice-class yacht that that we have ever built. Blue II’s explorer characteristics are not only prominent in her seakeeping abilities, but also in use of her deck space. As storage for the tenders, toys and a small submarine are below deck, the aft main deck is free and uncluttered for social use. Blue II’s layout and interior design were a collaboration among Hoek Design, London-based Vickers Studio and Amsterdam-based Dols and Company Interiors. Blue II’s interior is a blend of subtle classic elements, such as teak detailing, and contemporary flair. While her looks bear a resemblance to the

Golden Age of Yachting, Blue II is an entirely fresh and original design with merely a nod to yesteryear. Her interior is a blend of subtle classic elements, such as teak detailing, and contemporary flair. Styling is by Hoek Design in cooperation with Vickers Studio and Dols Home, which provided the interior décor. Along with cozy and communal indoor spaces, there are expansive open deck spaces for relaxation. Owners’ representation and project management was provided by Master Yachts Consultancy. Large open spaces enable a seamless transition from day to night. Along with a cozy outdoor lounge for large parties, the outdoor dining table can be used as either a coffee table or a dining table. The outdoor seating is upholstered in light blue fabrics mirroring the colors of sea and sky.

PEARL 95 SEAMLESS STYLE & LUXURY

T

he Pearl 95 continues the hugely successful design collaboration between Dixon yacht design and Kelly Hoppen. As innovative and groundbreaking as its smaller sisters, the 95 is even more luxurious and breathtaking. This is legendary seakeeping, style and performance on a whole different scale. With lines from the drawing boards of longterm Pearl collaborator Dixon Yacht Design, the Pearl 95 turns heads wherever she cruises. A semi-raised pilothouse merges seamlessly with the extensively glazed deep V hull in an aerodynamic and sporty silhouette. The sweeping curve of the top deck meets with the more linear shape of the main deck, its windows following the line of the hull with aggressive, modern edges. The long overhang of the steep bow is designed for speed and impeccable seakeeping whilst the stern platform maximises the connection to the sea. From the hull design through to the styling, engineering and interior space planning, the Dixon design team has strived to produce a yacht that really stands out from the crowd.

Continuing in her exclusive and highly successful collaboration with Pearl Yachts, international design star Kelly Hoppen has created a luxurious and impeccably planned interior on par with the exacting tastes of superyacht clients. In her design, Hoppen placed a strong emphasis on the flow from the outside in and ensured that the spaces breathe and feel unenclosed. The feedback of previous and current Pearl Yacht owners has been a strong influencer in the development of the 95 and the owner’s cabin can be found forward on the saloon deck and will feature huge windows boasting unforgettable panoramic views over the bow. This cabin is accessed through an antechamber with dressing table and impressive stowage. The main deck saloon is vast with space for a huge L-shaped sofa and a dining table for eight.

OCEAN INDEPENDENCE A CONVERSATION WITH GREG NORMAN

Photograph by Jane MacNeille

K

nown worldwide as an athlete and a businessman, Greg Norman has seen international success both on the golf course and in the boardroom. An icon of the sport, Australian-born Norman started golfing at the age of 15 and joined the PGA tour full-time in 1983. He went on to hold the second-longest reign as world number one and win over 90 PGA tournaments, earning him the name “Great White Shark”. Now a successful entrepreneur, Greg is chairman and CEO of the Greg Norman Company, which owns over a dozen businesses worldwide – encompassing golf course design, global real estate award-winning wine, lifestyle apparel, and a diverse investment division. He lives with his family in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where he continues to be involved in sporting, business and charitable endeavors. An avid yachtsman, Greg has owned multiple superyachts, including the 70m Oceanfast superyacht AUSSIE RULES, which he sold in 2004. Having sold AUSSIE RULES once as FLORIDIAN and then for a second time as NOMAD at the Monaco Yacht Show (agreeing the deal as yacht horns blared to signal the end of the event), Ocean Independence were keen to learn more about what drives Greg and discuss his love of yachting. Did you have a connection to the water from an early age? I grew up in Townsville, close to the beach, and my family had a holiday hut on Magnetic Island, only eight kilometers from the shore, so the Great Barrier Reef was in my blood! Every day as a young kid, I would come home from school and we would go out fishing, surfing, snorkeling, and diving. I would ride my horse bareback along the beach, skim-board, and fish in a little boat with an 18-horsepower motor on the back. My sister and I grew up sailing a little boat called Peter Pan with the Townsville Sailing Club. I was very fortunate – I had a wonderful childhood. And how about golf? At age 15, we moved to Brisbane because of my dad’s work. I lost all my mates, though I was still surfing a lot at Sunshine Beach and Byron Bay. My golf really came on around the age of 16 after caddying for my mum one day. She was a four handicap, so I figured if she could do it, so could I. After that everything else got tossed aside, including watersports, cricket, rugby, and Aussie Rules.

Photograph by Lindsey Potter

How did you get involved in superyacht ownership? It came out of my love of the ocean. My dad built me a boat with wood framing when I was about 11 years old, and I thought the woodworking process was amazing. I had watched my dad working under our house and was fascinated by how much work was involved in shaping, and the tools involved. This whole experience really stayed with me. The first AUSSIE RULES was a 27m sports fishing boat, built by Oceanfast in Australia. My passion for deep-sea fishing and scuba diving were the motivators behind this build: I wanted a platform that would allow me to do both. I shipped it over to the US, and quite honestly it was one of the biggest sports fishing boats there at the time – I was ahead of the game. It was the platform I wanted with the four state rooms and plenty of dive rooms. Great for the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Then I bought a Feadship, which I enjoyed, but at the same time I knew there was something missing. I needed to have another sports fishing boat to go diving and fishing. I had the idea of building the 69m AUSSIE RULES at Oceanfast, with a combination of all the things I needed. I designed it to circumnavigate Australia, which I really wanted to do. It had a flat bottom, because tidal flows in the northern part of Australia are 45 feet. I got involved with the tank testing, the stringers, all those engineering things - I was fascinated with the build process and I really studied hard. I wrote the specification book before I even went to the yard. What did you like about the build process? All of it! I loved understanding the engine room and the working spaces, the generators, centrifuges and watermakers, all that stuff. There was the question of where we were going to put everything. There is a refrigerated trash compactor in the transom. The boat just grew and grew to be the 230. To build something of that magnitude and sophistication in the late 1990s, we had to be innovative in our mindset. We won the Showboats Yacht of the Year award. It is very important to remember that the yacht

is a testament to Oceanfast, my captain (who was present throughout the build), and all the engineers, the sparks, and the skilled people who did a phenomenal job in Australia. This yacht was ten years ahead of her time. I really couldn’t get to enjoy her as much as I wanted as I was still playing golf. If I had the yacht now, you would never see me working. I regretted the day I sold her! Tell us about a favorite adventure on AUSSIE RULES. I remember a month in French Polynesia with my family. We almost ran out of fuel as we got back to Bora Bora. We held like 285,000 liters and used the lot on the most amazing experience I’ve ever had: the most beautiful water, great experiences with oceanic white tips and bottlenose whales. Amazing! How have your businesses been during the pandemic? My businesses are global, so it’s not a one-size fits all answer. I think the world is in a confused place right now. From a geopolitical standpoint, there’s so much white noise and media bias. I have this saying: ‘The voice of the critic is far louder than the voice of the advocate’. Nowadays, one person challenging and complaining about a company can change everything. You have to be extremely sensitive to those situations and demands from customers. Through my travels, I love seeing what happens in different countries. Take Vietnam, a communist country loving free market capitalism! It is a red-hot country - great people, great food, great cities and very safe. The Vietnamese recognise that market capitalism is as good as gold. I was asked to be the Golf Tourism Ambassador in Vietnam, and I accepted wholeheartedly. All of that being said, I love where we are at and I think we’ve done a very good job of managing the whole process with my consumer products during the pandemic. We are in a strong position. Now we are looking into expanding further into the health and wellness space and looking at new opportunities - you have to be a forward thinker. I never look to the past, always to the future.
