Bradley Cruise: What excited you about being a consultant for The Jersey Tomato Co., which of course now features your face on the bottle, cannot get more personal than this? Tom Colicchio: I am thrilled to officially be on board with The Jersey Tomato Co. As a chef and proud Jersey Boy, JTC is the first sauce I’ve found with the careful balance of sweetness and acidity I strive for in my own home-cooked version. Tell us about the recipes featured to our readers that you crafted in your home kitchen using the sauce? The recipes I’ve created using JTC are intended to showcase the product’s versatility and recreate the flavors of my Elizabeth, NJ childhood for any home cook who wants twice the flavor in half the time. What makes Jersey bred tomatoes so unique? (The JTC line exclusively uses Jersey bred tomatoes.) New Jersey gets a lot of heat, and may be the butt of a lot of jokes, but we have this thing, this tomato, that nobody else has. And a lot of people don’t know about it, but we are proud of it. We grow these beefsteak tomatoes that no one else has, that we love.

The brand is also equally excited about the Colicchio partnership. Two of Colicchio’s custom created recipes utilizing the sauces include Seafood Cioppino Featuring ‘Spicy’ flavor and Pork Involtini Featuring ‘Roasted Garlic’ flavor. Colicchio’s Seafood Cioppino Ingredients: 1 fennel bulb, chopped, fronds reserved 1 large leek, chopped (white and pale green parts) 4 garlic cloves, sliced 2 shallots, sliced ¼ cup olive oil 1 tbsp. fennel seed Salt & pepper 1 lemon, zest peeled and julienned 1 lb mussels 18 clams 8 sea scallops 12 large shrimp, peeled & deveined 1 lb monkfish, trimmed and cut in chunks ½ cup white wine 25oz Jar The Jersey Tomato Co. Spicy Sauce Directions: Heat oil in a dutch oven or heavybottomed pot medium heat. Add veggies and let them sweat (do not add color). When the veggies start to sizzle, turn down the heat. Add fennel seed, salt and pepper. Stir and cook until veggies are softened and fragrant.

Add ¼ cup white wine. Add clams, cover and steam until they open, approximately 4-5 minutes. Add mussels and lower heat to simmer until all have opened. Add the scallops, monkfish and shrimp. Add Spicy sauce, julienned lemon zest and juice of one lemon. Allow to simmer until seafood is cooked. Garnish with chopped fennel fronds and lemon juice. ` Serves 4

F

or Officine Gullo, picturing a space in which to cook and socialize means placing the customer’s wishes at the heart of the project. Every Officine Gullo creation derives from in-depth conversations with the customer and intense study of the space where the kitchen will be installed. This made-tomeasure research ensures that the future kitchen resembles a perfectly tailored suit. The design is developed and the plans are handed to the technical team to check for feasibility and functionality. The green light from their technicians leads to the next stage, 3D and Virtual Reality rendering. It is only at this stage, and with the customer’s final confirmation, that production begins in the workroom. To grasp the true value of an Officine Gullo kitchen, it’s essential to understand the workroom where ideas take shape. It all begins with the design, examined in detail with the customer until perfection is achieved and all requirements are met. Once the plans are approved, the designs are handed to the workroom to take shape. For Officine Gullo, details are essential. Everything is crafted by hand, piece by piece, shaping solid brass on lathes, engraving fine metal panels and chiseling each single brass element. When all the components are ready, the kitchen is assembled in a raw state to evaluate the perfection of the sum total. This is a fundamental stage in the kitchen creation as it enables their technicians to check the precision of the ensemble of the units and the design’s overall harmony. The kitchen is dismantled for the final phase, finishing and painting of the metals, allowing the final configuration to take shape. The meticulous work by master craftspeople ensures that your kitchen will become a unique and unparalleled creation down to the minutest detail. This process is what makes Officine Gullo unique. Beyond signature traits and styles, every kitchen is different because each creation reflects its owner’s lifestyle and embraces his or her wishes. The Silver Grey and Polished Chrome project is a successful and notable result of this design process.


Elegance, brilliance and high-quality performance distinguish the kitchen space by Officine Gullo. The appeal of the light grey finishing of steel together with the whiteness of pure white of woodworking give style and refinement to the space and some bright details and chrome-plated brass finishing make it be even more appealing. The Silver Grey kitchen has an important cooking equipment with highly performant burners, pasta cooker, coup de feu and fry top and with convection oven. A refined professional hood is over the cooking machine and is enriched by a wall panel made of Fior di Pesco Apuano marble. On either side there are two elegant columns made of white lacquered wood. The first is equipped with a steam oven, food warmer, storage drawers, upper bottom hung compartment and small pull-down column with drawers made of wood. The second column hosts an oven for roasts, storage drawers, an upper bottom hung compartment and a small pulldown column to store glasses.


In the middle of the room there are two parallel islands which are perpendicular to the cooking unit. The island for washing, is made of metal, and is equipped with a steel top with an integrated sink and a double mixer. A double dishwasher and compartments with hinged door are placed at the basis. The second island is made of wood and equipped with an Apuano Fiore di Pesco marble top and finished with an elegant chrome plated brass edge. Its basis hosts a fridge with big drawers, a wine cellar and storage compartments. The kitchen is completed by a refined wall unit equipped with a part with a breakfast column made of wood and with a marble top, with glass shelves, inside drawers, a mixer and an induction hob. On the other side there is a double wooden column with shelves. In the middle there is a freezer and a Gaggenau 76 cm refrigerator and a blast chiller column with drawers and a storage compartment. The frame of the kitchen is made of high-thickness stainless steel, color Silver Grey painted (RAL 7004 MATT) with woodworking made of lacquered wood with Pure White (RAL 9010 MATT) finishing. As it is for all the creations by Officine Gullo, it is possible to fully customize the composition of the cooking equipment, from dimensions to the composition of the hob, to the engraving of knobs or to colors which can be selected from the whole RAL range.

oldbrecht, the manufacturer of the structurally glazed Vitrocsa Invisible Wall System, has experienced a high demand for luxury single family homes, but they are now being coveted by an increasing number of architects for multi-family and commercial use. ALI ENTERPRISES TRANSCENDS THE IMAGINATION


W

hen you think of your outdoor living space you want to view it as an extension of your home. Some homeowners look for the “wow” reaction, some look for a relaxing space to breath with a good book, others look for a dynamic elegant party experience. Often, clients look to feel all these sensations. The passion and imagination behind the creation of a successful outdoor living space requires a professional eye who sees both the natural beauty of the space combined with the homeowner’s vision. Overall, the goal is to create a functional space that meets and often exceeds the homeowner’s expectations while providing a purposeful artistic experience. Ali Felschow: “The wonder of color and texture transcends the imagination. My creations are designed to stimulate the senses beyond the trivialities of everyday life and allow you to experience the elements of the design while enhancing the space.” Designer and builder Ali Felschow of Ali Enterprises Inc. bases her projects around the experience, the feel which she explains is different for every homeowner. Having designed outdoor living spaces for over 20 years, Ali Enterprises Inc. has a reputation for creating timeless showcases that integrate seamlessly with their natural surroundings and feel comfortable and inviting. “I didn’t start out in the field of design. In college I went to school for Art in Atlanta, naturally I learned how to manipulate spaces on paper but that is nothing like seeing it before your eyes. When it comes to the pool construction industry, my experience really did start at the bottom. During school I worked as a pool maintenance technician working and cleaning pools of different shapes, sizes, colors, and locations. As I got older and with a better understanding of a pool’s functionality, I was able to take my artistic knowledge and really use it to understand the flow of natural spaces in pool construction. Since then I have been a part of hundreds of different creations and different visions. “I take this hands-on experience and my familiarity in the area of pool construction and maintenance to my client’s advantage.”


When designing the perfect space often you must look at the bigger picture. Bringing imagination to life needs a handson experience. “When I refer to hands-on experience, I’m not simply talking about my previous experience in construction. Design is a creative experience that goes hand and hand with an education. Traveling has helped educate me on different ways to build and overcome obstacles. Necessary items do not need to be boring or standard. A drain cover is a very necessary item when designing outside spaces. When traveling in Austria the Melk Abby, I noticed the hand cut drain covers which was a fantastic way to make a functional part of a project be a decorative piece that really makes you stop and look at the details in a new way. Every facet of the world has a unique way of solving problems related to everyday life, we just must “see” the creativity. Ali takes interest in how the client lives. She likes to study the family dynamic, the style they seek and how everything flows inside and out. With these additional details she attempts to create a design that fits the clients best. “Seeing a homeowner comfortable in their natural environment really helps me develop a stronger connection with the space.” As clients travel from Coast to Coast they do so to experience new places and want their spaces to fit their life style yet invoke a inner connection. Ali enjoys the conversation and learning about people and the imaginations of the different people she encounters. “While I believe I can create a lot of great ideas on my own, it is nice to take a page from a client’s book. They live with the space every day, they stare at it and formulate ideas in their head while you are still processing that the space exists. Sometimes just listening provides you with a great deal of insight.”


The best part of design is taking the client to their new space in a way that they would not have ever imagined. Some clients tell me that they want a certain look, however their home and how it’s designed do not match what they say they want, I have to listen and look and I always find that “feeling” that the client wants in the space that might not have been translatable in “modern” , “Mid Century Modern” etc. The outdoors should flow inwards to the home’s interior for a good design to be apparent. Ali states, “Crafting a space that can be used during all seasons is a personal priority for me. If I cannot provide a beautiful 365-day experience for my clients than I have not done my job.” Elegance can only be provided when the correct details are supplied at the right time with close attention to flow, functionality, and spacial awareness to create an enjoyable and easy experience for both client and contractor. From new construction to renovation, Ali enjoys the challenge. She holds a certification for the Society of Water Shape Designers (created by GENESIS) and Watershape University. Ali attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta with honors. She is an artist, painter, and does pottery work as well. Ali works to incorporate different artistic designs into the water shapes and hardscapes. Just how an interior designer incorporates art into your home, she incorporates art into your outdoor space. She continues to study her environment and enjoys new experiences. She continues to evolve beyond simplistic design to create new and unique designs in every space. “Designing is the first look into what a space could become. I love seeing the look on my clients face when I show them a 3-d rendering of what the space could be. When I complete a design and I see that my client loves it, it creates a euphoric feeling and makes this job worth it every day.”

sabelle Van Zeijl invests herself in her images. She takes female beauty ideals from the past and sabotages them in the context of today. By using subjects that intrigue and evoke emotion, she reinvents herself repeatedly and has created a body of work to illustrate these autobiographical narratives. Her work takes from all she experiences in life - she is both the model, creator, object, and subject. Going beyond the realm of individual expression, so prevalent in the genre of self-portraiture, she strives to be both universal and timeless. Her love for nature and metamorphosis is also identifiable in the rebellious way she reshapes the dresses of well-known fashion designer Claes Iversen, whose designs she sabotaged into new forms in her early series “Camouflaged Beauty.” The embroidered flowers on the body indicate the process of our natural and inherent need to grow and continually progress; it illustrates the transformation from one phase of life to another, including the metamorphosis of a child into a woman. Transformation is a real and lasting change, however, is not a oncein-a-lifetime achievement, but rather a means by which we move forward, towards wholeness. Over the past fifteen years, Van Zeijl has shown work internationally. She is represented by galleries in the U.K., the U.S., the Netherlands, Belgium, and exhibits at emerging and established international art fairs in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, and Italy. Inspired by the relationship between humanity and the horse, Van Zeijl traveled the Wild West upon horseback in search of the iconic American symbol: The Wild Horse that still lives freely on the Western rangelands. The horse is a universal symbol of freedom. Emerging from a long evolution stretching back nearly 50 million years comes the horse, a wild beauty. The horse reminds us of overcoming obstacles and how one should carry oneself in the face of adversity. As a spirit animal, the horse works hard to tell us to take care of our emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. In some cultures, white horses stand for the balance of wisdom and power. Riding horses made people feel they could free themselves from their bindings. Representing the strength of maturity to handle what life brings, black horses were messengers of esoteric knowledge, keeper of secrets and mysteries. The meaningful relationship between horses and humans inspired Van Zeijl to investigate and dive deep to create a series of self-portraits with horses. Last January, Isabelle photographed herself with the horses every night under the moonlight. Every night she sat naked on the concrete floor in a freezing Aspen cold barn in front of her camera. To gain the horse’s trust, she had to evolve into complete surrender. Horses often mirror our deepest fears. They are typically non-judgmental, have no preconceived expectations or motives, and are highly effective at reflecting the humans’ attitudes and behaviors. These series carry out an important message for all of us. It is time to embark on the ultimate voyage through inner space, learn about trust, surrender, achieve the impossible, reach for the stars, and feel like we can touch them. “MOONSHOT”

The Barn’s unique architecture and interior design allow room to transform the space for movie nights, sports viewing, live music, and more. A relaxed 120 seat dining room and bar surround a doubleheight fireplace, inviting guests to linger around the warmth of the hearth. Long farmhouse-style tables anchor the large space, providing an opportunity for multiple families and friends to gather. To create an authentic and welcoming experience, Discovery Land Company tapped a collaboration of designers and architects for the Barn, with Alder & Tweed serving as the space’s final designer. The design firm specializes in premier luxury residences, communities, and hospitality projects. Drawing on inspiration from the rich local history and iconic architectural styles of the Hudson Valley, New York Design Director Stephanie Balvin worked with a local guild of artisans to incorporate handmade Shaker-style dining pieces in the design.


Balvin and team sourced The Barn’s design accessories locally, finding it imperative that every detail is authentic to the local natural and cultural landscape. To accomplish this, they scoured barns, private estate sales, and local shops to identify original folk art and Americana relics. Championing Discovery Land Company’s commitment to sustainability, the design team used vintage oak floor, reclaimed wood, locally sourced stone, and one-of-a-kind pieces inside the barn and reclaimed wood from a local barn on the exterior. “Utilizing traditional techniques for construction, weaving, and milk paint finishing, we were able to translate historical patterns and colors into stunning modern-day adaptations,” said Balvin. In the Barn’s lower level, the feel is more youthful, with vintage sporting equipment lining the walls and authentic ‘throwback’ arcade games filling the space. The lower level also houses a 10-pin bowling alley, movie theater, and arts and crafts room boasting a wood-firing pottery kiln.

Jamie Agoglia: You’re working on so many great projects right now and you sound so happy and excited! Nic Roldan: I’m super happy, things are good, from a business aspect, my polo career, all of that is going really well. Family’s good. So I can’t complain (laughs). Speaking of family, I remember you were doing some interior design with your mom. Yes! So we just finished building about two months ago my first spec house. We built a house from the ground up inside the Palm Beach Polo & Country Club which is based here in Wellington, Florida, that’s doing really well. I have a barn for sale, I have a spec house for sale, and then I just finished another personal project with my mom on a house here in the Polo Club as well which I’m living in while it’s also for sale. That for me is very important. My passion for interior design and architecture is something that I’ve always tried to stick with and stay true to. My mom loves it, we work on a lot together. We go hand in hand. My ideas, her ideas. She’s got a great style. My style and her style are a little bit different, but go REALLY well together, it’s been really good.


That’s good to hear, and what’s great about those sectors of the economy, home and design, and luxury real estate, in my opinion, during this time and then ongoing into the future, are going to come out of this even stronger. People spending more time in their homes, the affluent especially, realizing that they’ve had a magnificent home in the Hamptons, or Palm Beach, works of art really, while haven’t done what truly can be done with them and have now been forced to realize that, which in itself is a beautiful thing as now they will turn them into all that they can be, with a Diamond Spa, or with a interior design done by Nic Roldan and his mom! I agree, I’ve always loved real estate. Anytime that I’ve ever had some extra cash, I’ve always either bought a house, built a barn, I own three houses inside the Polo Club, I just finished building this spec house, I own a barn with two other partners who happen to be my best friends, and I’m interested in moving into the long-term rental market as well. I’m looking into all aspects of real estate besides commercial. I love the design aspect and the building aspect. I love trying to really build cool new and inspiration stuff. Real Estate, you can never go wrong with it, especially if you’re buying in Palm Beach, Aspen, the Hamptons, you’re buying in these places where, well now more than ever people are going to want to get out of the cities. You’re absolutely correct, and what’s beautiful and in direct correlation with what you just mentioned and what you are doing with your mom, is it really is one of the most powerful forms of art. To build and bring a home to life, or the inside of a home with your mom, to transform it into something that it would have never been, without your vision and your skill set, that’s incredible. Exactly, and to be able to see the final result, the final coat of paint, and to see the expressions on people’s faces when they walk into a house that you built? I can’t explain it. It’s such a good feeling, and that’s the fun part about it! It’s one of my passions.
