Forever in our memory On November 28, South American football experienced one of its most tragic moments. The plane carrying Club Chapecoense crashed near Medellin, the city where the CONMEBOL Sudamericana (South American CONMEBOL) final was due to play. A total of 71 people lost their lives bringing mourning to Brazilian, South American and world sport. At the express request of the rival team, Atlético Nacional, Chapecoense was awarded the Sudamericana title in tribute to the victims of this terrible accident.

The National Anti-Corruption Secretariat of Paraguay awarded CONMEBOL the first prize in the Competition of Good Practices in Transparency and Integrity in the Private Sector. Never before had CONMEBOL received such a distinction. It is a recognition of systematic work in favor of transparency and against corruption.

Within the framework of the 74th CONMEBOL Congress, a memorandum of understanding is signed between UN Women and the Confederation. The purpose is to promote the empowerment of women in the different football areas, aiming to build an equal and inclusive sport.

Works included the total renovation of the pitch grass and the lighting system which was replaced by a state-of-the-art technology system. Likewise, works also comprised the modernization of the locker rooms, changes in the stands, transit areas, parking, restaurants, boxes and other facilities. The intervention in the Centenario Stadium was carried out without altering the historical features of this true monument of world football.
As a sort of legacy to Montevideo and Uruguay, CONMEBOL promoted a series of renovations in the historic Centenario stadium in preparation for the CONMEBOL Sudamericana and CONMEBOL Libertadores finals.
From November 20th to 27th, Montevideo became the Football capital of the world. CONMEBOL organized in that city the finals of the Sudamericana, the Libertadores and the Women’s Libertadores competitions. Thousands of fans flooded the streets, squares, hotels and stores with their joy and enthusiasm, providing a vigorous boost to several sectors of the economy. The massive return of the public, after the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, showed that the South American passion for this sport is stronger than ever. After three intense matches, it was the turn of Atlético Paranaense, Corinthians and Palmeiras to lift the long-awaited trophies. THREE-FINALS-WEEK
