e’ve all come up with a New Year’s resolution only to see it slowly fade as January turns into February. Let’s be honest, some of us don’t even get out of

January before our New Year’s resolution dies like the poinsettia on our front porch. A Forbes Health/One Poll survey found that the average resolution lasts 3.74 months. Only 8% of respondents tend to stick with their goals for one month, while 22% last two months, 20% last three

months and 13% last four months. Most people aren’t ready to commit to their resolutions and give up because they either lose motivation, haven’t prioritized their goals, or swap their resolutions for newer, more relevant personal goals. Swapping resolutions for newer personal goals is exactly what I suggest for 2024! This year, instead of beginning the New Year with a resolution, try learning something new. Supposedly it takes approximately 10,000 hours to learn a new skill. If that’s the case, I’m an expert on binge-watching Netflix! Learning something new always sounds fun, but then we must put in the work. When it’s day three trying to master a new language on Babble and a Seinfeld episode that I’ve already seen 30 times comes on, it’s easy to put down the Babble app. According to Josh Kaufman, author of The First 20 Hours: How to Learn Anything…. Fast, it only takes 20 hours to learn a skill. He says, “20 hours are doable – that’s about 45 minutes a day for about a month.” Here are 4 steps to help you get started on your journey and stay focused: 1. Break down a skill into its components. The first thing you need to do is decide what you want to learn, and then break it down into smaller, manageable pieces. 2. Learn enough to know when you’re making a mistake. Get three to four resources about what it is you’re trying to learn. It could be books, YouTube, or online information. 3. Remove all barriers to practice. Stay focused while concentrating on your new activity. No watching Seinfeld during French lessons on Babble! 4. Practice for at least 20 hours. To overcome what Kaufman calls the “frustration barrier” (that period in the beginning when you’re painfully incompetent and you know it), you must commit to sticking with your new activity for at least 20 hours. By that point, you will be amazed at how good you are! For 2024, I’m thinking “Learn to Play Chinese Mahjong Step by Step!”

The dramatic impact of Technicolor was the focus for the filmmakers once again when it came to the color of the Emerald City. In Baum’s book, Dorothy and her companions are forced to don glasses that are fastened at the back by a lock which is kept by the Gate Guardian when they arrive in Emerald City. Unbeknownst to them, it is these glasses that make the city appear green. Oz later admits that he forces the people of the city to wear the glasses to make the city seem more magical than it actually is. In the movie, there are no such glasses, Emerald City appeared green with no need for visual enhancement. Remember the horses?! In Baum’s book, the Wicked Witch of the West had only one eye. Her role and presence in the book weren’t nearly as significant as the focus on her in the film and did not include the early introduction of her character as Dorothy’s nemesis. Actress Margaret Hamilton’s brilliant portrayal further helped bring the character front and center. Her memorable performance in the film made her one of the most famous incarnations of witches, ranking the character as one of the American Film Institute’s Top 50 best villains of all time. Finally, in the book, Dorothy has significant adventures after meeting the Wizard and traveling to find Glinda that are not detailed in the movie. This was likely due to time constraints and the more fantastic elements of the story that would have been difficult and costly to create in the days before CGI. musicians, writers, poets, and dancers would gather to discuss their ideas and works over food and drinks. The city’s wealthy and famous mingled with the bohemians and artists of the neighborhood and the Pigalle over evening meals with entertainment that combined music, stories, poetry, and comedy with political commentary. Salis hosted these social soirées in a small club called Le Chat Noir and began each show with a monologue joking about current events. By 1896, there were more than 50 cabarets and cafes with music in Paris and approximately a dozen music halls, which hosted more lavish and theatrical productions with elaborate costumes, singing, and dancing. The Moulin Rouge, the Olympia, the Alhambra, and the summer-only outdoor venue of Printania were some of the best-known examples of these music halls featuring what we would now call cabaret-style acts. It is the spirit of these Parisian clubs and performance halls that the Coastal Symphony of Georgia seeks to evoke for this year’s signature fundraiser, Cabaret de Paris. JANUARY 2024

initiative marks a significant milestone in the community nonprofit organization's commitment to fostering excellence in healthcare and enhancing the skills of its dedicated staff.

Hospice of the Golden Isles now offers in-service programs covering various clinical, psychosocial, and spiritual topics. Current in-service programs offered are: Death and Dying, Dyspnea with Advanced Illness, Hospice Care Overview, Hospice Levels of Care, Managing End-of-Life Issues, Nutrition and Fluids for the Dying Individual, Addressing Opioid Anxiety, Pain Management Principles, and Advanced Pain Management Principles. Their credentialed staff present these professional development courses in a setting most convenient to their healthcare partners at their facility or the Hospice of the Golden Isles campus, which results in Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for RNs and LPNs at little or no cost.

HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS

A Civil War Letter from a Son

n January 1863, young Robert Couper was far from home. From a military camp near Port Royal, Virginia, Couper wrote to his mother, Caroline Couper of St. Simons Island, to update her on his time in the Confederate military. He likely knew that his mother was anxious to hear from him. When Robert wrote this letter, it had been only six months since his brother, John Lord Couper, had died at Gordonsville, Virginia. Less than a year before that, his eldest brother Hamilton had died at Manassas, Virginia of typhoid. His brothers James and Alexander were also enlisted, leaving parents James Hamilton and Caroline with only letters like these as proof of their sons’ well-being.

Robert wrote to his parents amid a cold, wet Virginia winter. While he wrote that January was “usually the most severe month,” he also assured his family that he was well protected from the cold. “I have a good tent,” he wrote, “and lately I have had a chimney of mud and sticks put up at one end of it; this is far better than sitting by a fire in the open air, where we suffer at the same time from wind, smoke, and cold.” Robert Couper’s service in the area centered around the Hazelwood Farm, a property on the Rappahannock River that had once belonged to John Taylor, a U.S. senator from Virginia. Couper’s regiment placed their headquarters in the ruins of Taylor’s house and soon began picquet (more commonly spelled “picket”) duty along the southern bank of the river. As a picquet, Couper was to prevent the passage of boats in either direction, observe the movements of the enemy, and refrain from engaging the enemy in conversation. Stationed just across the river, about four hundred yards away from Robert’s regiment, Union troops were easy to observe but perhaps more difficult to avoid. One of the most dramatic moments in Couper’s picquet duty came when a major of a North Carolina battalion tried to pilot a boat to visit nearby picquets along the river. Instead, Robert wrote, “the high wind that was blowing drifted them in spite of their efforts to the other bank of the river, where they were at once captured by the enemy.” Couper assured his parents that while the Union may try to cross the Rappahannock, he did not think they would succeed. Robert believed that points on the Confederate side of the river were well-protected, and specifically promised his father that “we have great cause for confidence and encouragement. This letter, along with others from Robert, are in the Wilbur Couper Collection at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Also pictured is a small portrait of Caroline Couper, Robert’s mother.
