Merry Movie Magic

There’s something magical about December nights when the tree is lit, marshmallows are melting in our hot cocoa, and we gather without fail to watch our favorite Christmas movies. Year after year, we return to the same stories, the same characters, the same snowy scenes that feel like home. Whether it’s Clarence getting his wings, Kevin McCallister outsmarting the Wet Bandits, or Buddy the Elf spreading unfiltered cheer, these holiday classics aren’t just movies, they’re beloved traditions that are part of our lives. They mark the countdown to Christmas, filling us with nostalgia as we laugh, quote the lines we know by heart, and remember why these timeless classics mean so much to us.

In the spirit of the season, I thought I’d share few little-known facts about some of our very favorite Christmas movies that even big movie fans might not know:

O In It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey’s iconic run through Bedford Falls was filmed on a 90° summer day. Jimmy Stewart was sweating so heavily under his overcoat that production assistants had to pack his suit with ice between takes.

O The tarantula on Marv’s face in Home Alone was 100% real—but his scream was fake. Daniel Stern agreed to let the spider crawl on him, but he wasn’t allowed to scream during the take because it would scare the tarantula. The scream was added in post-production.

O The famous tongue-on-the-flagpole scene in A Christmas Story was filmed using a hidden vacuum suction tube. No ice. No glue. They built a metal pole with a small hole that created suction, making it look like Flick’s tongue was frozen solid.

O Buddy’s Jack-in-the-box jump-scare reactions in Elf were 100% real. Jon Favreau sat off camera with a remote, opening the boxes at completely random moments to get authentic, startled reactions out of Will Ferrell.

O Edmund Gwenn, Santa in the 1947 version of Miracle on 34th Street, rode the entire parade route in character as Santa in the real 1946 Macy’s Parade before heading to the set to film scenes—and no one in the crowd knew it was him!

There’s nothing better than curling up with family and friends, cozy blankets, some snacks, and one of these timeless Christmas classics to welcome the season.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Elegant Island Living. May your New Year be full of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

25 YEARS OF FLAVOR, COMMUNITY, AND COMPASSION

When A Taste of Glynn first debuted a quarter-century ago, it was a modest gathering with a bold purpose: to bring people together over food while raising critical support for survivors of domestic violence through Amity House. Twenty-five years later, the event has blossomed into one of the Golden Isles’ most anticipated culinary traditions—an evening where flavors delight, chefs shine, and the community unites for an unforgettable cause.

On Sunday, January 18, 2026, the elegant halls of Sea Palms Resort will come alive with music, laughter, and the tantalizing aromas of the Golden Isles’ best cuisine. But this year isn’t just any year—it’s the 25th anniversary, a true “silver celebration” that honors both legacy and hope.

Behind the glamour of small plates and silver trays lies the true heart of A Taste of Glynn: Amity House and Glynn Community Crisis Center. Every ticket purchased, every sponsorship pledged, and every dish enjoyed, turns into life-changing support for survivors of domestic violence.

To commemorate the anniversary, the evening will feature “25 Stories of Survival.” These are personal glimpses into the lives touched and transformed through the programs Amity House provides. The stories, displayed throughout the venue, will remind guests of the resilience and strength that has been nurtured in the community’s generosity through the years.

One story might highlight a mother who found safety and stability for her children. Another may share how counseling and advocacy opened the door to a new beginning. Together, these 25 stories create a powerful mosaic of compassion—proof that for every year A Taste of Glynn has thrived, countless lives have been lifted.

Of course, the silver celebration wouldn’t be complete without the beloved traditions that make A Taste of Glynn a hallmark event:

Culinary Excellence: Local chefs, restaurants, and caterers offering their finest.

Live Entertainment: Music by Michael Hulett and Bill Lukitsch, setting the stage for mingling.

Silent Auction: Exclusive items and experiences donated by local businesses, adding another layer of excitement to the evening.

Community Connection: Hundreds of guests gathering with one shared mission: to support survivors and strengthen the Golden Isles.

Hundreds of stories of hope, resilience, and new beginnings made possible by the generosity of this community.

A silver anniversary offers the perfect moment to pause and reflect, but also to dream about what comes next. As A Taste of Glynn steps into its 25th year, its purpose is as vital as ever. Domestic violence continues to affect families in our community, and Amity House remains a steadfast source of safety, compassion, and advocacy. By attending, sponsoring, or simply spreading the word, you become part of a legacy that is bigger than one evening—it’s a movement of kindness and empowerment that stretches across generations.

At its core, A Taste of Glynn is more than a culinary celebration—it’s a lifeline of hope. The event’s proceeds directly fund Glynn Community Crisis Center/Amity House which for decades has provided safe haven, immediate crisis intervention, and dedicated advocacy for survivors of domestic violence across Glynn and McIntosh counties and beyond. Through traumainformed, compassionate support and practical assistance, our programs empower women, men, and children to rebuild their lives with dignity, safety, and independence. Guided by an understanding of the lasting impact of trauma, we meet each survivor where they are, fostering trust, promoting healing, and supporting their journey toward long-term stability and hope.

Since opening its doors, Amity House has helped thousands of individuals and families escape abuse, find safety, and start anew. From emergency housing and counseling to legal advocacy and community education, the organization’s work ripples far beyond its walls, creating stronger, safer communities throughout the Golden Isles. Each Taste of Glynn ticket purchased helps ensure that those escaping violence never have to face their journey alone.

YOUR LUXURY MARKET LEADER | SEA ISLAND/ST. SIMONS ISLAND

A YEAR FOR ACCOLADES

Each December, Elegant Island Living shares insight from Patrick Dunn of Sea Island Properties about the current state of the real estate market on Sea Island and St. Simons. As a top producing agent in Glynn County since 2012, Patrick certainly knows his stuff! This year, however, we’re thrilled to share something different—the fact that Patrick has been ranked the #1 real estate agent in Georgia in 2024.

First announced in January, Sea Island Properties earned the state’s highest honor amid record-setting sales. These results were shared in the 2024 report published by RealTrends Verified that recognizes the top-performing agents in the nation based on verified sales volume. Dunn also earned national distinction, coming in at No. 29 among agents across the United States. Sea Island Properties was also represented by Don Lewis and Laura Peebles, both of whom were named among Georgia’s top qualifying agents.

“Sea Island continues to be one of the most stable and sought-after markets in the country,” said Dunn. “Buyers are drawn to the sense of place, privacy, and quality of life the island offers. And while demand remains high, sellers are still seeing strong results—especially when pricing their homes strategically from the start.”

In 2024, Sea Island Properties amassed more than $259 million in sales and pending contracts. Of that total, over $48 million of Dunn’s transactions were sold off market—a trend that he says sets Sea Island apart.

“In a market like Sea Island, where privacy is paramount and relationships are everything, many transactions happen quietly and efficiently, without ever being publicly listed,” he explains. As luxury buyers increasingly seek exclusivity, the prevalence of off-market sales in places like Sea Island reflects a broader shift in how high-end real estate is being bought and sold.

Since 1928, Sea Island has been known as an exceptional destination appealing to those who appreciate gracious service and heartfelt hospitality. With three Forbes Five-Star experiences—The Cloister at Sea Island, The Lodge at Sea Island, and The Spa at Sea Island—Sea Island entices families, outdoor enthusiasts, and those simply wanting to refresh. As the only U.S. resort to host a G8 Summit of world leaders, Sea Island provides exceptional settings and service for conferences and executive retreats. Located on the southeastern coast of Georgia, Sea Island features five miles of private beach, the nation’s largest beach club, a tennis center, a Yacht Club, a Shooting School, and children’s programs, as well as three championship golf courses, including Seaside and Plantation— home of the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic. Located on St. Simons Island, The Inn at Sea Island offers casual accommodations, several on-site amenities, and is the perfect base to explore Georgia’s beautiful Golden Isles. Broadfield, a Sea Island Sporting Club and Lodge, offers seasonal hunting and fishing opportunities.

As the official real estate brokerage of Sea Island, Sea Island Properties specializes in luxury properties along Georgia’s Golden Isles. With unmatched local knowledge, a commitment to client service, and deep roots in the community, Sea Island Properties has long been known as a trusted partner for buyers and sellers seeking excellence at every step. Dunn, who has been Glynn County’s top-producing agent for 13 consecutive years, has closed or placed under contract more than $1.8 billion in sales since 2012. A longtime resident and advocate for the area, Dunn has lived or vacationed on Sea Island for more than 30 years—offering clients not just deep expertise, but a genuine connection to the community he calls home.

In 2025, the Dunn Team at Sea Island Properties demonstrated its commitment to giving back to the community where they live, work, and play, by donating $100 of every transaction to the Davis Love Foundation.

The mission of the DLF is to help build a better future for children and their families who are at risk of poor educational, economic, social and health outcomes. The Foundation provides donations to community-based programs that focus on children and families in need.

Patrick continues to be the leader in listings and sales on Sea Island and handled 94% of all transactions on Sea Island in 2024! The Dunn Team has assisted clients for a total of $1.829 billion in sales.

The RealTrends rankings, which are developed in partnership with HousingWire, are widely considered the industry standard for evaluating individual agent performance. Rankings are based on closed sales volume and independently verified for accuracy.

The Dunn Team has the experience, expertise, and commitment to help you achieve your real estate goals. Contact them at 912.222.0142 or email patrickdunn@seasisland.com. To learn more about Sea Island Properties, visit seaislandproperties.com.

The Dunn family wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

While relatively new businesses, Coastal Coffee and The Southern Peach have quickly become two favorite local spots that perfectly capture the essence of Southern hospitality, St. Simons Island’s laid-back charm, and our strong sense of community. Each has its own personality, but both share one mission: to bring people together, celebrate creativity, and support local small business.

Coastal Coffee is known for its cozy, coastal atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can relax with friends, catch up on work, or simply enjoy a quiet morning moment. Every cup is brewed from award-winning beans sourced from a small-batch roaster right outside of Atlanta, ensuring the freshest flavor in every sip. The café also serves made-to-order breakfast and lunch, along with freshly baked pastries and treats prepared daily. Whether you’re craving a handcrafted latte, a savory breakfast sandwich, or something sweet to go with your coffee, Coastal Coffee offers the perfect combination of quality and comfort. It’s the ideal place to gather, study, or just take in the island’s easygoing rhythm. Located at Morningstar Marina, it’s the spot for a true “brew with a view.”

Just minutes away, at 1226 Ocean Boulevard, The Southern Peach celebrates everything about shopping small and supporting local. Home to more than 50 talented artisans, this beautiful market showcases a carefully curated collection of handcrafted jewelry, home décor, local art, candles, baked goods, boutique fashion, and coastal-inspired gifts. Every piece tells a story—made with passion and purpose by local creators who pour their hearts into their craft. The Southern Peach is the perfect place to find something meaningful and unique for everyone, whether you’re shopping for a special gift or treating yourself.

Both businesses were founded by Amy Kreamer, a longtime restaurateur with a passion for people, good food, and small business. After owning several successful restaurants, Amy moved to St. Simons Island and fell in love with its welcoming community and charm. She wanted to create spaces that reflect the heart of the island, where locals and visitors alike can gather, connect, and enjoy the simple things done well.

Together, Coastal Coffee and The Southern Peach reflect the heart and soul of St. Simons Island. Every sip, every purchase, and every visit support the people and passions that make this coastal community so special.

Buried Treasure Sleeping Beauties

Since the earliest days of the discovery of gold, this rare earth mineral has captivated people. The Egyptians learned the art of making exquisite items with it, dating back to 3100 BCC, and even now, in 2025, we are still excavating. Those ancient Egyptian relics are still precious, not only from a gold standpoint but an antiquity standpoint as well. It would be amazing to know what these rarities would bring in today's marketplace. I learned to chart gold from my father, who taught me how to read graphs and their importance at a very early age. As a member of the U.S. Air Force, graphs and charts were a part of his daily life, and thanks to him, I feel that I have become somewhat of an expert in predicting precious metals.

There is no graph in the world that can define intuition, which brings me to a beautiful story of a grandmother's love that will

always transcend time and a lifelong gift that can be passed as heirlooms from one generation to the next. A dear friend commissioned me to make diamond crosses for her three grandsons and granddaughter. These crosses had to be very unique, special, and one of a kind, with the caveat that the mold be broken after final approval and making of the product.

As the grandsons are tall and athletically built young men, the necklaces needed to be 36” long, very solid, heavy rope. I studied my gold chart graphs looking to obtain the best possible prices. My friend said, “Just go ahead and order them.” At that time, gold was around $1,820 per ounce. I explained that I was trying to save her money since the necklaces were so heavy and long. She repeated, “Just order them.”

The next morning, I begrudgingly ordered her four magnificent, solid rope gold necklaces, believing based on prior experience and graphing charts that I could get a better price. Surely my four decades of experience would come into play. Fast forward to October 2025, and gold rose to $4,300 per ounce. Not only had her custom-made diamond crosses more than doubled in value but so had the necklaces. Some may call that luck, I call it divine intervention.

Gold remains one of the rarest and precious of all metals. If you take a $5,000 suit, bury it and dig it up in a year, you’ll have rags. Whereas if you bury gold and dig it up in a year, you still have a precious commodity. My friend, with her keen intuition, accomplished a rarity of lifelong treasures to be passed down from one generation to the next. Her four grandchildren have been fostered to appreciate and take care of gifts from the heart. When passed on will they be to the delight of their heirs, or will they be recrafted into something more to their liking? Adaptability is part of the rare beauty of a precious malleable metal.

These days, technology changes in the blink of an eye, and tools used to craft jewelry are no different. What could have taken months to custommake years ago now takes substantially less time with new tools, dyes, and the sophistication of learning from master jewelers. I enjoy the privilege of helping people who bring in jewelry passed down to them that is not to their liking, by working my magic to craft it into a spectacular, beloved piece.

Dawne Hudson, a beloved retired schoolteacher in Brunswick, shares this testimonial: “Noble House Jeweler, Zoe Herrington, has a vision for recrafting old, dated pieces to make them sparkle again. She has redone so many pieces for me that get a lot of attention. When I explain that it’s the same diamond in a different setting, no one can believe it. Most recently, she had a diamond D made for me that gets compliments each time I wear it. My signature piece is a diamond Byzantine cross that everyone asks about. She has an eye and great imagination for giving new life to old pieces.”

Lorraine, another blonde beauty living in Brunswick, but originally from England, sauntered into my store like only a British Rose could. Lorraine came in to shop for wedding gifts, and we began talking about my mother

being from Britain. The fashion of the British wedding band started over seventy years ago and is what we now call an eternity ring. Lorraine's mother, Norma Smith, was born in Birmingham, England, in 1941, while her father served in the war. Norma asked to be given her mother’s ring when she passed, and Lorraine’s grandfather made sure that promise was kept. In October 2024, this rare piece of history was bequeathed to Lorraine.

I had the honor and privilege to inspect this beautiful diamond ring and found that almost all of the prongs had been completely worn down. After seeing the peril her precious ring was in, Lorraine ever so gently asked, “Can this be repaired with all the years of wear?” My smile may have lit up my entire store. My true love and specialty: transforming a lovely and treasured piece of family history back to its original beauty, if not better.

After my master jeweler worked magic, this became an elegant ring with near-perfect diamonds. Looking at this ring, an average person would never appreciate the beauty within. It has been said that diamonds collect the energy and vibrations of the person wearing them. What a lovely heirloom to be passed down to the next lucky recipient. If you have abandoned or overlooked treasures, which I refer to as “sleeping beauties,” schedule an appointment at Noble House Jewelry, where the magic is not a fantasy, but real.

Christmas Trees: What’s Your Flavor?

In South Georgia, Christmas trees play an important role in holiday celebrations. While the region's warm climate impacts both the varieties grown locally and the options available at tree lots, families across South Georgia continue to enjoy both traditional and unique Christmas trees.

The climate in South Georgia is generally mild, with hot summers and cool winters. This affects which types of Christmas trees can be grown successfully in the area. The most common varieties include:

Arizona Cypress: Known for its bluish-green color and pleasant aroma, Arizona Cypress is well-suited to South Georgia’s climate. It is drought-resistant and grows well in sandy soils common in the region. This tree has soft, dense foliage and a sturdy structure, making it popular for local tree farms.

Leyland Cypress: Leyland Cypress is another favorite among South Georgia growers. It features dark green, soft foliage and little to no scent, which is preferred by some families. Its rapid growth and tolerance for heat and humidity make it an ideal choice for the area.

Virginia Pine: While more common in northern parts of Georgia, Virginia Pine is also found in the southern region. It has short, stiff needles and a classic pine scent. The tree is favored for its traditional appearance and affordability.

Fraser Fir: Fraser Fir cannot be grown in South Georgia due to the warm climate, but it is frequently shipped in from the North Carolina mountains. It’s prized for its dense needles, pleasant aroma, and excellent needle retention. Many tree lots in South Georgia offer Fraser Fir as a premium imported option.

South Georgia’s winters

over firs

specialize in Leyland and Arizona Cypress because these trees are resilient in the region’s heat and require less maintenance. Tree farms typically plant young saplings in early spring and harvest mature trees in late fall, just in time for the holidays.

sold in South Georgia. Virginia Pine offers a classic look, while Fraser Fir is imported for those who prefer a traditional fir. Tree selection depends on preference, tradition, and budget, making it an important activity to begin the holiday season.

You’ll find a variety of tree types, presenting unique fragrances and textures, available at many South Georgia Christmas tree farms. Supporting these tree farms is a great way to support local family businesses, support the regional economy, and establish your own family tradition. It also ensures your trees are freshly cut, ensuring high quality and longevity. You can also watch for pop-up Christmas tree lots run by non-profit organizations as fundraisers to support those organizations. No matter which tree you choose, it will be a fragrant symbol of the season’s celebrations.

Merry Christmas!

Your Well-Being

A Perfect Fit

Style is a way of life, not an afterthought, here in the Golden Isles. At Coastal Eye Care, we believe your eyewear should embody the same refinement. As a necessity and a personal statement, the right pair of glasses should enhance your features, elevate your confidence, and feel as natural as your own skin.

Precision Fit: Luxury Meets Comfort

Every face is unique, and your glasses should be too, so we approach every fitting as a craft. Our optical boutique is managed by a licensed dispensing optician. We carefully measure bridge fit, eye size, temple length, and lens alignment to ensure your eyewear feels effortless all day. More than small touches, details like adjustable nose pads or reshaped acetate temples are the foundation of all-day comfort and confidence.

Whether you prefer bold statement frames or a minimalist style, we tailor each selection to highlight your best features and match your lifestyle. Our mission is to ensure that when you put on your glasses, they look like they were made for you. Because, in truth, they are!

Materials that Match Your Lifestyle

The material of your frame influences more than aesthetics. It defines how your glasses perform over time. Acetate frames add personality and presence with rich colors and textures. Designers such as Face à Face and Tom Ford excel in acetate, creating pieces that are both artistic and fashion-forward.

Metal and titanium frames provide refined and discreet sophistication. Collections from Lindberg and Tag Heuer offer durability,

feather-light comfort, and timeless elegance. Unlike plastics that can adjust with body heat, titanium retains its structure for a lasting fit that keeps pace with your active lifestyle.

World-Class Designers

Our extensive boutique represents the pinnacle of global eyewear design. Eyewear should not only be functional but also serve as an extension of your personal brand. We have selected designer collections that align with the discerning tastes of our clientele.

A Frame for Every Face

Style begins with proportion. Angular frames create definition for round faces, while soft curves balance square features. Cat-eye and semi-rimless styles complement heart-shaped

faces, and nearly any design flatters an oval face. Our team ensures each frame enhances your features as well as your individuality.

Why Coastal Eye Care?

For those who expect more than an optical shop, Coastal Eye Care is your Golden Isles destination. We provide personalized fittings, unrivaled attention to detail, and a selection of frames found only in the world’s finest boutiques.

Eyewear shouldn’t simply correct your vision. It should define your look, reflect your lifestyle, and offer unparalleled comfort. At Coastal Eye Care, we invite you to experience eyewear that is custom-fitted, luxury-driven, and uniquely yours.

A Taxing Story: Capital Gains and Losses

Chris Rock once remarked, “You don’t pay taxes – they take taxes.” That applies not only to income but also to capital gains.

Capital gains result when an individual sells an investment for an amount greater than their purchase price. Capital gains are categorized as short-term gains (a gain realized on an asset held one year or less) or long-term gains (a gain realized on an asset held longer than one year).

Keep in mind that the information in this material is not intended as tax or legal advice. It may not be used for the purpose of avoiding any federal tax penalties. Please consult legal or tax professionals for specific information regarding your individual situation.

Long-Term vs. Short-Term Gains

Short-term capital gains are taxed at ordinary income tax rates. Long-term capital gains are taxed according to different ranges (shown below).1

TAX BRACKETS (FOR 2025)

It should also be noted that taxpayers whose adjusted gross income is in excess of $200,000 (single filers or heads of household) or $250,000 (joint filers) may be subject to an additional 3.8% tax as a net investment income tax.2

Also, keep in mind that the long-term capital gains rate for collectibles and precious metals remains at a maximum of 20%.3

Rules for Capital Losses

Capital losses may be used to offset capital gains. If the losses exceed the gains, up to $300 of those losses may be used to offset the taxes

on other kinds of income. Should you have more than $3,000 in such capital losses, you may be able to carry the losses forward. You can continue to carry forward these losses until such time that future realized gains exhaust them. Under current law, the ability to carry these losses forward is lost only on death.4

Finally, for some assets, the calculation of a capital gain or loss may not be as simple and straightforward as it sounds. As with any matter dealing with taxes, individuals are encouraged to seek the counsel of a tax professional before making any taxrelated decisions.

My Sweet One

While visions of sugar plums dance in your heads this month—ask a room full of sommeliers what sweets they desire and you may be surprised. While dry wines dominate wine lists and consumer preferences, sweet and off-dry wines are quietly revered by industry insiders, and not just for dessert. Sweetness in wine isn’t just about sugar, it’s about balance. The best off-dry and sweet wines are masterclasses in precision, where acidity, alcohol, and residual sugar fuse in harmony. A Mosel (Germany) Riesling with 25 grams of sugar might taste nearly dry thanks to its electric acidity. Professionals appreciate this tightrope walk, where sweetness amplifies complexity rather than cloyingness.

The inclusion of residual sugar can enhance the transparency of wine, giving true insight into the region’s terroir. In grape growing areas such as Vouvray (France) or Tokaji (Hungary), sweetness acts as a lens, magnifying the nuances of soil, climate, and grape variety which is the very definition of terroir. It’s no accident that some of the world’s most terroirexpressive wine varieties like Riesling, Chenin Blanc, and Furmint are produced with a mouth-watering amount of sweetness.

Dry wines may be the default for food pairing, but sweet wines are often the life-saving gun and can unlock pairings that dry wines simply can’t touch. Off-dry to sweet whites tame spicy dishes, balance salty cheeses, and elevate umami-rich foods. A Riesling enjoyed with fiery Thai curry is absolute magic. A demi-sec Champagne gulped with fried chicken can be transcendent.

Crafting world-class sweet wines requires remarkable skill and ideal growing conditions. For instance, grapes destined for Icewine must be picked while frozen on the vine. Sauternes (and the surrounding areas) production depends on an unpredictable fungus, Botrytis cinerea, taking hold onto grape bunches. As a result of this “noble rot,” the grapes lose some of their moisture, which creates more intense and unique flavors. Hungarian Tokaji Aszú requires careful selection of individual botrytised berries picked by hand. The fruit is then crushed into a thick paste. This paste is macerated for several days with dry, white wine to extract the intense flavors and sugars. It is then aged for many years in oak barrels prior to release. Although these sweet wines often get the evil eye, they showcase the dedication and risks that winemakers take when producing a true labor of love as the

microclimate may only yield two or three vintages per decade.

Sweet wines are also incredible tools for palate development. Their layered aromas of honeysuckle, apricot, and beeswax can help in training your sniffer (and palate) to detect subtle nuances. The aging potential of sweet, high acid wines is legendary. If well-made, they can evolve for decades, gaining complexity and depth to rival the finest reds.

While sweet wines may not be trendy, they are quietly cherished by those who know the charm they offer. Sweetness isn’t a flaw, it’s a feature. Once you taste a perfectly balanced off-dry Riesling or a compellingly beautiful Sauternes, you may find yourself entering the sugar shack and becoming a sweet wine convert.

8 oz. white chocolate wafers (or almond bark), for dipping 8 oz. dark chocolate, chopped, for dipping Crushed gingersnaps for garnish

PREPARATION:

Place gingersnap cookies in a ziplock bag and crush with rolling pin or back of a measuring cup. Transfer crumbs to a bowl, add cream cheese and vanilla. Mix by hand until smooth. Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Remove cookie mixture from refrigerator once chilled. Scoop mixture, using a small cookie scoop, and roll into 1-inch balls. Place balls on prepared baking sheet. Transfer baking sheet to freezer for 15 minutes (or refrigerate for one hour) until truffles are firm.

When ready to dip, melt chocolate by placing white chocolate in a heat-safe glass bowl and microwaving at 50% power level, stopping to stir every 20 seconds until smooth. Repeat with dark chocolate. Remove chilled truffles from refrigerator. Using dipping tools or two forks, dip each truffle in melted chocolate of your choice, coating evenly. Gently tap off excess chocolate on side of bowl and return truffle to tray. Drizzle chocolate to decorate, if desired. Immediately sprinkle with crushed cookie crumbs to garnish. Repeat with remaining truffles. Place truffles back in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to harden chocolate. Serve immediately or place between layers of parchment paper in an airtight container. Store for up to one week in refrigerator. (Makes 36 truffles)

Coastal Christmas Cookery

Looking for a literal taste of Coastal Georgia history and culture that’ll warm you up this winter? You’ll find it in our local cookbooks! The Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s collection contains recipes from across cultures, historical eras, and continents that all made their way to the Golden Isles. Cookbook examples include Ye Olde Time Salzburger Cook Book, recipes from a group of German-speaking Protestants that immigrated to Georgia in 1734; 120 Wartime Meat Recipes, meant to help families conserve meat during World War II rationing; and St. Simons Island, an overview by local historian Burnette Vanstory that also features recipes for hush puppies and deviled crab.

Coastal Cookery was first published by the Cassina Garden Club in 1937. Its introduction promises “favorite and tested recipes [that] include many old and prized coastal dishes seldom found in cook books.” The holiday recipe it shares with us dates much further back than 1937—in fact, it’s originally a medieval English invention! Eggnog got its start as a drink called a posset, made of milk curdled with hot, spiced wine or ale. By 1775, Americans called a similar drink eggnog. George Washington had his own recipe for the drink that included “rye whiskey Jamaica rum [and] sherry,” although he didn’t specify how many eggs to use.

Thankfully, the Cassina Garden Club’s cookbook provides us with easyto-follow directions that lead to an interesting twist on eggnog. Mrs. Edwin Fendig’s version, made with beaten egg yolks, egg whites, and heavy cream, is meant to be eaten with a spoon. Give it a try and let us know how your St. Simons eggnog turns out!

Eggnog, St. Simon’s

12 eggs

1 [pint] heavy cream

1 [cup] sugar

1 [cup] best rye whiskey

Separate eggs and beat yolks fluffy. Add very slowly, the whiskey, heating constantly. Whip cream very stiff. Whip whites stiff adding sugar gradually. Then carefully add yolk mixture, folding in well. Last add cream, being sure all are thoroughly mixed. If this is properly made it will be the consistency of whipped cream, and is eaten with a spoon. Serve in cups or glasses, with fruitcake, cheese dainties, and salted nuts.
