or every great institution, changes are necessary to keep up with the times and adapt to the demands of the community. Elder always seems to evolve to meet the needs of its students. After not making too many changes in his first year as Elder’s Principal, Kurt Ruffing is spearheading some new changes heading into his second year. The two most notable reforms are the shift in the school year’s start and end dates, along with the new midterm exam setup. The 2017-2018 school year is essentially being moved up two weeks and that is a big change. Students are used to heading back to school during the last week of August and letting out the last week of May. However next school year, classes start on Monday, August 14th and finals exams end on Wednesday, May 23rd. According to Mr. Ruffing, there are two reasons for this. The first is so that the first semester will end before Christmas break, and students won’t have to worry about studying for any midterm assessments over the break. This is the same strategy currently employed by Seton. The second is this will allow for senior gradu-
ation to be held the week before Memorial Day. The seniors’ final day will be May 18th next year. The second big change is the revamping of midterm exams. Rumors had been swirling recently, saying that midterm exams would be no more. Sorry to burst some bubbles, but they aren’t going away entirely. They are just being tweaked. Mr. Ruffing is calling them “midterm assessments.” He said, “There’s going to be a variety, so some disciplines like Math, Science, Social Studies, et cetera, will be a written exam. Some will be class presentations. Some will be projects. So those will vary.” As for testing out of these assessments, students will still probably be able to be exempt with teacher approval. This is the same as the current system. Mr. Ruffing also joked about return to dress shirts and ties every day, but don’t fret. That’s not actually happening. Those are the major changes for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year, but the most interesting change for Elder could occur ahead of the 2018-2019 school year. Mr. Ruffing expressed interest in adopting a flex schedule similar to Seton’s. That move would allow a myriad of

new opportunities for Elder students and teachers. If a Seton-esque system was developed, a typical Elder week would consist of three seven-period days, one three-period day, and one four-period day. This would allow teachers to plan out certain activities for the longer class days. For example, teachers could schedule labs or movie days for the longer class periods, to insure that those activities can be completed in one day. If the timing of the classes was changed to match up with Seton’s, the two
schools could also see the return of Elder students going over to Seton for certain classes, and vice versa. This ended about five years ago when Seton first adopted their current flex schedule. As always, it’s an exciting time to be a Panther. It will be interesting to see how these new changes are integrated into the coming school years, as Mr. Ruffing and some of the new administration members continue to mold Elder to fit into their collective creative vision.

or those who do not know, morning announcements are those things many students sleep through, do homework during, or just miss because they are running late. We are used to the traditional routine of a student, now Mark Smith, reading the announcements page. Then he turns it over to Mr. Flaherty, who then would usually hand it off to Mr. Dabbelt for a sports update. However, now Elder is in a time of change, and announcements will become drastically different in the next school year. Video announcements have been in the works for next school year thanks to Lou Langen and other Juniors. They have met with the faculty members of Mr. Rogers, Mr Fuell, and Mr. Reiring. “The purpose of the video announcements is to keep the student body more interested and to give other students the experience of allowing them to sit in front of a camera just like (graduate) Bill Hemmer does on the news,” Mr. Rogers said towards the idea of the announcements. This idea came in response to hearing about other local high school announcements. Elder from the looks of it is behind in this fashion. Many schools like Seton, and LaSalle have been using this method of announcements for a few years now. But if Elder joined it for sure would be above and beyond anything other video announcements have been. The announcements are planned to be
an everyday event; however, some may think it could be too ambitious right away. Rogers thinks that if they take the time to get setup in the right direction with segments and other tested ways to avoid just having a shot of a student sitting in front of a camera talking, then it could be quite successful. How does the technology work? Well it’s not as hard as it sounds for now. If we wanted to do it like our sports broadcasts for example, we could use YouTube Live, or Skype but the problem with these methods is that there could be a delay with the audio portion of the broadcast to the classrooms. The solution they plan to work on in the summer is the possible use of data lines to each room to allow a direct audio and video feed. The announcements “studio set” will be in the Library and meetings are set up in the summer so the students interested can learn how to use the cameras and equipment. Many of the students who are involved in the current process are not just student council members
