Emmalynn is orrigionally from the neighboring town of Mayagüez and a current resident of Sabana Grande for more than 20 years. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Teaching Art and got her Postgraduate in Professional Counseling, both from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, San Germán Campus. She is an artist by profession and the owner of E.G. Atelier since 2016.
Within her artistic professional life she has managed to collaborate with recognized brands by designing positive affirmation cards for L’Oréal, Maybelline, Garnier, NYX, and Essie. She also gained exposure in a Puerto Rican feminist magazine called Presencia Femenina and in an international magazine, Lateinamerika Nachrichte. Emmalynn has aslo participated in local broadcast television segments such as Wapa TV and Telemundo. It has been a great honor for Emmalynn to participate in Puerto Rican cultural events such as Las Fiestas de La Sanse, La Campechada, El Festón Cultural, among other events that promote the artistic and socio-cultural environment in Puerto Rico.
Emmalynn es oriunda del pueblo de Mayagüez y residente del pueblo de Sabana Grande desde hace más de 20 años. Obtuvo su grado de Bachillerato en Enseñanza del Arte y Postgrado en Consejería Profesional, ambos de la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico Recinto de San Germán. Es artista de profesión y propietaria de E.G. Atelier desde el año 2016.
Dentro de su vida profesional artística ha logrado colaborar con marcas reconocidas. Por ejemplo, diseñar tarjetas de afirmaciones positivas para L’Oréal, Maybelline, Garnier, NYX, Essie. En adición, lograr exposición en una revista feminista puertorriqueña como Presencia Femenina y una internacional como Lateinamerika Nachrichten magazine. Cabe resaltar que ha contado con la participación en segmentos televisivos de transmisión local como Wapa Tv y Telemundo. Ha sido de gran honor para Emmalynn participar en eventos culturales puertorriqueños como Las Fiestas de La Sanse, La Campechada, El Fiestón Cultural, entre otros eventos que promueven el ambiente artístico y socio-cultural en Puerto Rico.
It all began with her desire to create. Since she first picked up a pencil and went out into the world to share her art in places that were not only local, even though her art is currently in 10 locations in Puerto Rico, but to achieve artistic expansion around the world.
Being an artist today is definitely well “demanding” definitely. It’s a fast paced world where you have to move in sequence and synergyze with everything. Today social media is an excellent way to market and publicize your work. Regardless of whether Emmalynn works in this field or not, drawing is something that relaxes her and brings her happiness. She tells us that to be an artist, the only thing that will give you perseverance and consistency in the long term is simply loving what you do. That passion is what will guide you in those difficult and decisive moments when you don’t know whether to continue or not.
Rincón for Emmalynn means community, art, and culture. She is fascinated by all the movement the town constantly sees and all the self-management that goes on. Rincón is made up of many talented and creative people working for the same goal, its a lively and happy town embellished by the community. Rincón has opened its doors to her in a very organic way and she is very grateful for that. It has been through art that she has had the best interactions. She has met brilliant people like Annette Blasini, owner of Galería Boriké who has welcomed her into the space.
Sharing her art full of vibrant colors with such a beautiful, tropical, artistic town while also helping other artists to promote their art is one of her greatest contributions. Rincón is very interested in supporting the arts and promoting this talent both locally and globaly.
Emmalyn once listened to a “Ted Talk” where the spokesperson said: “practice makes... and the audience responds: perfection! and then the spokesperson says: no! Practice makes improvements.” We are so used to hearing about how we have to be perfect but perfection does not exist. The idea of perfection is toxic and harmful. We must redirect that idea to be better people every day but above all to be authentic. When we are authentic we are the best version of ourselves, imperfect and that’s okay.
Todo comenzó por su inquietud y deseo de crear desde que tomó un lápiz por primera vez en sus manos y se dirigió a compartir su arte en lugares no solo local, aunque actualmente se encuentra en 10 localidades en Puerto Rico pero, lograr esa expansión artística alrededor del mundo. Ser artista en la actualidad es bien “demandante” definitivamente. Se vive en un mundo rápido donde hay que moverse rápido en secuencia y sinérgicamente con él. Hoy en día las redes son una excelente manera de moverse y dar a conocer tu trabajo. Independientemente si Emmalynn trabajara en este campo o no, dibujar es algo que la relaja y le brinda felicidad. Nos cuenta que para ser artista lo único que te dará perseverancia y constancia a largo plazo es simplemente amarlo. Esa pasión es la que te guiará en esos momentos difíciles y decisivos que no sabes si continuar o no.
Rincón para Emmalynn significa comunidad, arte y cultura. Se fascina por todo el movimiento que constantemente ve y toda la autogestión que está sucediendo. Se compone de muchas personas talentosas y emprendedoras trabajando para un mismo fin, un pueblo vivo y alegre embellecido por la comunidad. Rincón le ha abierto las puertas en maneras bien orgánicas y vive agradecida por ello. Ha sido a través del arte que ha tenido las mejores interacciones. Ha conocido a personas brillantes como Annette Blasini, propietaria de Galería Boriké quien le ha brindado la bienvenida a su espacio.
Compartir su arte y colores con un pueblo lindo, tropical, artístico y de la misma manera ayudar a otros artistas a promover su arte también considera una de sus más grandes aportaciones. Rincón guarda gran interés por apoyar las artes y promover el talento tanto local y global y desea ser parte del movimiento.
Una vez escuchando un “Ted Talk” el portavoz dice: “la practica hace… y la audiencia responde: ¡perfección! y, luego el portavoz dice: ¡no! La práctica hace mejoras. Estamos tan acostumbrados a escuchar en aspirar a ser perfectos y la perfección no existe. La idea de la perfección es tóxica y dañina. Debemos redirigir esa idea a ser mejores personas cada día pero sobre todo a ser auténticos. Cuando somos auténticos somos la mejor versión de nosotros, imperfectos y eso está bien.
“Powerful Words”
When Emmalynn created the art chosen for the cover, she tells us that she wanted to portray a self-confident and powerful woman. The piece is titled “Powerful Words”.
The original work has text over it that reads “your words are spells” since the things we say to ourselves has a lot of power and energy. It is extremely important to be consious of how we speak to ourselves, since the brain processes these things and they can have both a positive and negative effect on us.
For the composition of the image, she was inspired by a photo of Diana Ross who had flowers in her afro, as well as “blooming from within” and she wanted to incorporate shiny stars in her hair. It kind of shines when she speaks to herself from a place of love and respect.
Some of her most notable pieces carry a very empowering meaning for women. These are “Eres Toda” and “Amarme es Construirme”. The message you want to take with you is one of self-esteem and that we are in a constant process of construction. We can and have the ability to become the version of ourselves that we want to be.
How does it feel to be chosen as the cover artist?
“For me it is a great honor and a goal accomplished. I longed to be in a printed magazine from Puerto Rico and in a nice and unexpected way it happened to me. I love what I do and every day I am grateful for the opportunities that are presented to me. Making art that not only helps and inspires other people in their personal processes, but also helps me in the process of making them. They bring me happiness and it is therapeutic for me. Art is healing and I invite you to connect more with your artistic side.”

“Palabras Poderosas”
Cuando realizó la obra escogida para la portada nos cuenta que deseaba plasmar una mujer segura de sí misma y poderosa. Esta obra está titulada “Palabras Poderosas”.
La obra original tiene un escrito que dice “tus palabras son hechizos” ya que las cosas que nos decimos a nosotros mismos tienen mucho poder y energía. Es de suma importancia el saber cómo nos hablamos, ya que el cerebro procesa estas cosas y tiene un efecto tanto positivo como negativo depende de lo que nos decimos constantemente.
Para la composición de la imagen se inspiró en una foto de Diana Ross que tiene flores en su afro, así como “blooming from within” y quiso incorporar estrellas en su cabello como resplandeciendo. Como que brilla cuando ella habla así misma desde el amor y el respeto.
Algunas obras a destacar por su significado empoderador en la mujer son “Eres Toda” y “Amarme es Construirme”. El mensaje que desea llevar con ellas es promover la autoestima y que somos un proceso constante de construcción. Podemos y tenemos la capacidad de convertirnos en la versión de nosotras que queremos ser.
¿Qué se siente ser escogida como artista de portada?
“Para mí es un gran honor y una meta cumplida. Anhelaba estar en una revista física puertorriqueña de una manera linda e inesperada y se me dió. Amo lo que hago y día a día agradezco las oportunidades que se me presentan realizando artes que no solo ayudan e inspiran a las demás personas en sus procesos personales, sino que a mí también en el proceso de realizarlas. Me brindan felicidad y es terapéutico para mí. El arte es sanador y les invito a conectarse más con su lado artístico.” - Emmalynn González González

When you think of Rincón, you think of surfing. Of people surfing, right? This surf story is different: it follows the tale – or tails – of two sato rescue dogs from Rincón and their handler, surf instructor Nicolas X. Michael, better known as Nico.
This story begins in Hawaii in the 1950’s. Nico’s dad Edward D. Michael, better known as Duke, had a surfing dog named Uku, which means flea in Hawaiian. In the early 60’s Duke brought Uku to Malibu, California, where he became known as the first surfing dog in Malibu. In 1962 Duke moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he opened the first surf shop on the island in barrio Obrero: Uku Surf Shop. He was known there as “el gringo de cantera,” a term coined by local newspaper The San Juan Star. A few years later at a surf contest in San Juan, Duke met Nico’s mom to be, Jean Haviland, a nurse and midwife.
After a few years in San Juan, Duke kept hearing rumors about this perfect wave at a beach named Maria’s in a small town called Rincón. After his first visit he decided he never wanted to leave Rincón - so in 1965 he moved Uku Surf Shop to road 413 km 0.1. This was also the birthplace of Nico, right on the corner of The Black Eagle. According to Nico, “my mom gave birth to me right there at the surf shop – while my neighbor Corky calmly sat on his porch eating a mango. It’s an attestation to the laidback lifestyle and small community vibe back then!”
According to Nico, “It was good times back then. My parents got married at Tres Palmas and raised a happy family in Rincón. They both dedicated themselves to caring for me and my sister, to surfing, and my mom to caring for women as a midwife.”
Between 1967 and 1968, Duke was instrumental in the creation of the PR Surf Federation, and in 1968, he helped bring the World Surfing Championships to Rincón. A funny anecdote, according to Duke, one of the reasons they wanted to bring the World Surfing Championships to Rincón was because, as Duke said, “it was getting lonely surfing all by ourselves.”
In 2013 in honor of his father, Nico opened his Duke’s Surf School in Rincón to keep the family surfing tradition alive. At the same time, Nico also kept the surfing dog tradition alive with his dog Moesha, a rescue that belonged to a friend, Sheree Muschett. Nico surfed with her until 2016.
In 2020 Roxy came along. Nico had let a friend, Neva from rescue group The PR Dog Fund, know that he was looking to foster/rescue a dog. Roxy was six weeks old when he adopted her and according to Nico, “as soon as I held her in my arms she looked up at me and there was an immediate bond created. I knew she would be with me forever.”
Roxy began her surf training when she was six months old. “I used treats to get her comfortable on the board, it took about a month for her to get comfortable. Then I introduced her to small summer waves, tandem surfing. She really started to enjoy it and was having a good time. When she was about a year old, the waves were too big at Domes to take her out so I left her on the beach. She swam out after me and got thrashed by the waves. So now she’s a bit afraid of big waves, but still goes out when it’s small.”
Cuando piensas en Rincón, piensas en surfear o de gente que surfea, ¿no? Esta historia de surf es diferente: conoce la historia -o sigue las colas- de dos perros de rescate satos en Rincón y su guía, el instructor de surf Nicolás X. Michael, más conocido como Nico.
Esta historia comienza en Hawai en la década de los 50’s. El padre de Nico, Edward D. Michael, más conocido como Duke, tenía un perro surfista llamado Uku, que significa pulga en hawaiano. A principios de los años 60, Duke llevó a Uku a Malibú, California, donde se hizo conocido como el primer perro surfista de Malibú. Durante años en San Juan, Duke seguía escuchando rumores sobre esta ola perfecta en una playa llamada Maria’s en un pueblo pequeño llamado Rincón. Después de su primera visita, decidió que nunca quería irse de Rincón, por lo que en 1965 mudó Uku Surf Shop a la carretera 413 km 0.1. Lugar que también fue el nacimiento de Nico, justo en la esquina de The Black Eagle. Según Nico, “mi mamá me dio a luz allí mismo en la tienda de surf, mientras mi vecino Corky estaba sentado tranquilamente en su balcon comiendo un mango. ¡Es un testimonio del estilo de vida relajado y el ambiente de una pequeña comunidad en ese entonces!”
Nico continúa: “Eran buenos tiempos en aquel entonces. Mis padres se casaron en Tres Palmas y formaron una familia feliz en Rincón. Ambos se dedicaron a cuidar a mi hermana y a mi, al surf, y mi mamá a cuidar mujeres como partera”.
Entre 1967 y 1968, Duke jugó un papel decisivo en la creación de la PR Surf Federation, y en 1968 ayudó a traer el Campeonato Mundial de Surf a Rincón. Una anécdota graciosa, según Duke, es que una de las razones por las que querían traer el Campeonato Mundial de Surf a Rincón era porque “se estaba volviendo solitario surfear solos”.
En el 2013 en honor a su padre, Nico abrió su Escuela de Surf Duke en Rincón para mantener viva la tradición familiar del surf. Al mismo tiempo, Nico, también mantuvo viva la tradición del perro surfero con su perra Moesha, quien fue rescatada por su amiga, Sheree Muschett. Nico surfeó con ella hasta el 2016.
Nico le había hecho saber a un amigo, Neva, del grupo de rescate The PR Dog Fund, que estaba buscando adoptar/rescatar un perro. Y es cuando para el 2020 llega Roxy. Tenía seis semanas cuando él la adoptó y, nos expresa que tan pronto la tuvo en sus brazos le miró, y automáticamente se creó un vínculo. Sabía que ella estaría con él para siempre”.
Roxy comenzó su entrenamiento de surf cuando tenía seis meses. Utilizó pequeños dulces para que se sintiera cómoda en la tabla, pero aun así le tomó alrededor de un mes sentirse cómoda. Luego le presentó las olas pequeñas de verano con el surf en tándem. Roxy realmente comenzó a disfrutarlo. Cuando tenía alrededor de un año, las olas eran demasiado grandes en la playa Domes para sacarla, así que Nico la dejó en la orilla de la playa. Sabrán que nadó detrás de Nico siendo golpeada por las olas. Así que ahora tiene un poco de miedo a las olas grandes, pero sigue saliendo cuando son pequeñas.
This was about the time Cookie was found. “I was at the baseball field at Maria’s, playing on the swings with my daughter Zafiro. We saw something sitting up on two legs in the dugout area. We walked over and noticed it was a little dog. She was terrified. And Zafiro immediately said, ‘we need to rescue this dog.’ For the first couple months Cookie and Zafiro were inseparable. Then school started and Cookie was very sad. That’s why I began bringing her to the beach. One day, a bunch of beach dogs chased after her and she ran into the ocean to protect herself. That’s when I thought she would make a good surfing dog. Roxy already knew how to surf so Cookie learned from watching and ended up completely falling in love with surfing. She ended up being just as much of a surfer as I am.”
Nico describes how Cookie has even learned to read the waves - when he paddles for a bad wave, or misses a good one, “she’s not quiet about it,” he chuckles. Sometimes Cookie is left on the beach to play with Roxy if Nico thinks the waves are too big for her. If Cookie disagrees she will swim out to the lineup on her own – timing her entry into the water between sets, just like any experienced surfer – before indignantly climbing onto the front of Nico’s board. “She can tell when I’m getting ready to go surfing in the morning. She gets super excited and jumps in the car to wait for me. When we get near Steps Beach, she starts barking and going crazy from excitement, I feel the same way.”
Nico continúa: “Estaba en la cancha de pelota en Puntas, jugando en los columpios con mi hija Zafiro. Vimos algo sentado sobre dos patas en el área del banquillo. Nos acercamos y notamos que era un perrito. Estaba aterrorizada. Y Zafiro inmediatamente dijo: “Necesitamos rescatar a este perro”. La rescatamos y la nombramos Cookie. Durante los primeros meses, Cookie y Zafiro fueron inseparables. Entonces empezó la escuela y Cookie estaba muy triste. Por eso comencé a llevarla a la playa. Un día, un grupo de perros de la playa la persiguieron y ella corrió hacia el mar para protegerse. Fue entonces cuando pensé que sería una buena perra surfera. Roxy ya sabía surfear, así que Cookie aprendió mirando y terminó enamorándose por completo del surf. Terminó siendo tan surfista como yo”.
Nico describe cómo Cookie incluso ha aprendido a leer las olas: cuando rema en busca de una mala ola o pierde una buena, “ella no se queda callada”, se burla. A veces, Cookie se queda en la playa para jugar con Roxy si Nico cree que las olas son demasiado grandes para ella. Si Cookie no está de acuerdo, nadará sola hasta la alineación, sincronizando su entrada al agua entre series, como cualquier surfista experimentado, antes de subirse indignada a la parte delantera de la tabla de Nico. “Ella puede notar cuándo me estoy preparando para ir a surfear por la mañana. Ella se emociona mucho y se sube al auto para esperarme. Cuando nos acercamos a Steps Beach, ella comienza a ladrar y se vuelve loca de emoción, yo siento lo mismo”.

Since there’s no surf dog contest in Puerto Rico, Nico entered the Legend Surf Classic contest in 2022 with Cookie. They won first place in the Grand Masters Longboard category, and this year they got second place. The crowd on the beach this year gasped collectively as Cookie slipped, fell, and got thrashed by a big wave – and then cheered when she popped up – and swam, not to the shore she had almost been swept to, but back into the waves to finish the competition. Next up, the pair will be competing in the World Surfing Dog Championships, held at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, California in August 2023. Nico and Cookie will be entered in the small dog tandem division. Cookie also has an invitation to participate in the PUPS on SUPS event in Florida.
According to Nico, “you can teach satos anything. They are so versatile, and they can adapt to any situation. They have the most unique personalities and are the most loving, caring animals.”
Duke’s Surf School offers surf lessons to children and adults of all abilities. Cookie is available for surf lessons taught in dogs, as well as tandem sessions. She charges two belly rubs a wave.
Como no hay concurso de perros de surf en Puerto Rico, Nico ingresó al concurso Legend Surf Classic en 2022 con Cookie. Ganaron el primer lugar en la categoría Grand Masters Longboard, y este año obtuvieron el segundo lugar. Esta vez, la multitud en la playa se quedó boquiabierta cuando Cookie resbaló, cayó y fue golpeada por una gran ola, y luego cuando apareció, y nadó, no hacia la orilla a la que casi había sido arrastrada, sino que regresó a las olas junto a Nico para terminar la competencia.
Pronto competirán en el Campeonato Mundial de Perros de Surf, que se llevará a cabo en Linda Mar Beach en Pacifica, California, en agosto de 2023. Nico y Cookie participarán en la división de tándem de perros pequeños. Cookie también tiene una invitación para participar en el evento PUPS on SUPS en Florida.
Según Nico, “puedes enseñarle a los perros satos cualquier cosa. Son muy versátiles y pueden adaptarse a cualquier situación. Tienen las personalidades más singulares y son los animales más amorosos y afectivos que puedas conocer”.
Duke’s Surf School ofrece clases de surf a niños y adultos de todos los niveles y edades. Cookie está disponible para clases de surf impartidas en perros, así como sesiones en tándem. Ella cobra dos masajes en el vientre por ola. (787)
Its not new news that every day we see large amounts of women protagonizing roles in major global industries. It should be noted that in a town as small as Rincón, most of the businesses are created and managed by transcendental women with great potential and a story to tell. Women with character, vision, creativity, and above all devotion to their community.

- Francheska González Pérez“Since I was little I remember that I was always looking for something to sell.” Karina Morales Muñoz, from Rincon, 27 years old, owner and proprietor of KJ Designs.
Upon leaving high school, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a double major in Human Resources and Marketing at the University of Puerto Rico in Aguadilla. After graduating, she couldn’t get a job in the field she studied, so she worked as a waitress for a while.
At the start of the pandemic (2020), she lost her job and had to find a way to reinvent herself in order to contribute to the household and to her son’s expenses. She began making cloth face masks and soon enough customers started asking for custom masks, so she made the decision to buy a small machine in order to meet her customers demands. When there was a drop in sales, she began to look for a job and soon started making custom shirts part time while working full time at an insurance company. One day she decided to take her small business to another level and without any experience she bought her first embroidery machine. Little by little, with practice, she perfected her creations and the business grew on a larger scale. She then decided to quit her other jobs to dedicate herself 100% to KJ Designs. Today it is her livelyhood and she lives proud of how far it has taken her.
All her life she has lived in the town of beautiful sunsets and after analyzing the market, she decided that Rincón was the perfect town to establish her business since there were no embroidery businesses at all. Now she makes custom shirts, embroideries, transfers, DTF’s, and HTV’s. Items such as: caps, polo shirts, jackets, hoodies, aprons, fisherman’s shirts, etc. She also makes cloth baby dipers. A business that prides itself on great prices and great quality. And, most important of all, is her great reputation with customer service.

In this small town there is a great diversity of businesses that need a closer establishment that can bring their visions to life.” It is a pleasure for Karina to be able to contribute to her town and neighboring towns with her products made with love and with the best quality materials.

Al salir de la escuela superior obtuvo su grado de bachillerato en Administración de empresas con doble mayor en Recursos Humanos y en Mercadeo en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Aguadilla. Luego de graduarse, no conseguía trabajo en la rama que estudió, por lo que estuvo trabajando como mesera un tiempo.
Al comenzar la pandemia (año 2020), se quedó sin empleo y tuvo que buscar una manera de reinventarse para poder aportar a los gastos del hogar y de su hijo. Es por esto, que comenzó a confeccionar mascarillas de telas. Luego, los clientes comenzaron a pedir mascarillas personalizadas, por lo que toma la decisión de comprar una máquina pequeña para poder satisfacer las necesidades de los clientes. Teniendo un buen respaldo pudo ser su sustento por mucho tiempo. Cuando hubo baja en ventas comenzó a buscar empleo. Realizaba camisas personalizadas a tiempo parcial mientras a su vez trabajaba a tiempo completo en una empresa de seguros.
Un día decidió llevar su pequeño negocio a otro nivel y sin nada de experiencia compró su primera máquina de bordar. Poco a poco, con la práctica fue perfeccionando sus creaciones y el negocio fue creciendo a gran escala, por lo que decidió renunciar a su trabajo a tiempo completo para dedicarse al 100% a KJ Designs. Hoy día es su sustento y vive orgullosa de hasta donde le ha llevado.
Toda su vida ha residido en el pueblo de los bellos atardeceres y luego de analizar el mercado, decidió que Rincón era el pueblo perfecto para establecer su negocio ya que no existían negocios de bordados en el mismo. Ahora confecciona camisas personalizadas (bordados, transfers, DTF’s y HTV’s). Entre las piezas están: gorras, polos, jackets, hoodies, delantales, camisas de pescador, etc. Además confecciona paños para bebés. Un negocio que claramente transmite precio, calidad, oferta y demanda. Y, lo más importante de todo, es ese trato personal con el cliente sin intermediarios.
“Rincón es Rincón” como decimos los de aquí. En este pueblito pequeño hay una gran diversidad de negocios que necesitan un lugar más cerca para poder realizar sus uniformes. Es un placer para Karina poder aportar a su pueblo y a pueblos limítrofes con sus productos hechos con amor y con la mejor calidad. No visualizaba de qué quería específicamente su negocio, pero Dios y la vida hizo que ocurrieran situaciones en el mundo para mostrarle cuál sería su pasión.

Francheska is from Rincón, 23 years old, owner and creative mind of Glamor Creations by Francheska.
Since she can remember, she has enjoying doing anything that involves getting crafty with her hands. When she was little, her mother enrolled her in a creative workshops where she learned different techniques that she has perfected today. For many years she spent her time making jewelry. But for some reason, she stopped doing it. Until one day, she tells her mother about her desire to go buy the materials to start over what she had already left behind. She made several pieces and they all sold very fast. She even made extra orders. Since then it hasn’t stopped. And with a little determination she obtained the necessary permits to be able to have her own accessories and jewelry business.
Upon completing her studies at Manuel García Perez High School in Rincón, she chose to take a cosmetology course at Emma’s Beauty Academy in Mayagüez. However she continues to dedicated herself to developing her line of accessories on a more professional level. Being from Rincón, she started her business here and takes advantage of all the great exposure this town has to offer like the Art Walk every Thursday. She requested permission to set up a table and exhibit her work to the public and is now making herself known.
Glamor Creations by Francheska is dedicated to creating jewelry mostly for women. From the simplest to the most complex. Something super important and that her clients constantly express is the amazing and friendly treatement she provides. Providing good service and having respect is key. Both professionally and personally, she considers herself an affectionate person, which she describes to us as the greatest of her qualities.
Throughout the day many things happen that affect us in a positive or negative way. On this occasion she wants to emphasize something very important. After seeing all that has been achieved thanks to God, family, and other people that life has given us, Francheska tells us: “The biggest challenge I faced in 2022 with my venture was the cancellation of events in which I would have participated. It is not understood at the moment. But, everything has a purpose before God to achieve success.”
Now she exhibits her creations in different parts of Puerto Rico. As well as in shopping centers, at private events, town festivals, etc. In addition, on Fridays you can find her at Craft Nights in the public square of Añasco. Search for her as: @glamour.creations.pr

Desde que tiene uso de razón le ha gustado aprender todo tipo de cosas que pueda realizar con sus manos. Cuando pequeña su mamá la apuntaba en talleres creativos donde aprendió diferentes técnicas que hoy día ha perfeccionado hasta lograr el tipo de piezas que ha deseado realizar. A través de los años, siempre solía confeccionar piezas de bisutería. Pero, por alguna razón, lo dejaba de hacer. Hasta que un día le comenta a su mamá su deseo por ir a comprar materiales para volver a empezar aquello que ya había dejado. Hizo varias piezas y todas se vendieron súper bien y rápido. Hasta le realizaron órdenes extras. Desde ese entonces no se detuvo. Y decidida al fin, obtuvo los permisos necesarios para poder tener su propio negocio de accesorios y bisutería.
Al culminar sus estudios en la escuela superior Manuel García Perez en Rincón optó por tomar un curso de cosmetología en Emma’s Beauty Academy en Mayagüez. Pero, desde entonces se ha dedicado a desarrollar su línea de accesorios a un nivel más profesional.

Aprovechando que todos los jueves en la plaza pública de Rincón se realiza el Art Walk, solicitó permiso para montar una mesa y exhibir sus piezas al público y darse a conocer. Siendo estos los comienzos de su negocio.
Glamour Creations by Francheska se dedica a crear bisutería mayormente para la mujer. Desde lo más simple a lo más complejo. Algo súper importante y que sus clientes expresan constantemente en modo retroalimentación es que lo que la diferencia de otros negocios es el trato que brinda. Brindar un buen servicio y tener respeto es clave. Tanto en lo profesional como en lo personal se considera una persona cariñosa lo que nos describe ser la mayor de sus cualidades.
A través del día a día se viven cosas que nos han marcado de manera positiva o negativa. En esta ocasión desea recalcar algo muy importante. El ver todo lo que se ha logrado gracias a Dios, la familia y otras personas que la vida nos ha regalado. Francheska nos cuenta: “El mayor reto que enfrenté en el 2022 con mi emprendimiento fue la cancelación o eventos pospuestos en los cuales tendría participación. No se entiende en el momento. Pero, todo tiene un propósito ante Dios para llegar al éxito.” Ahora exhibe sus creaciones en diferentes partes de Puerto Rico. “I have always had the entrepreneurial spirit ever since I saw my grandparents selling different types of items. I spent many summers in the Dominican Republic at my grandparents’ house, they had a small store and ever since I was little they always instilled in me the idea to work for ones self and not for others.”
- Athina Alejandra Almonte DulucLike many, after Hurricane María, she lost her job. So it was then in 2017, that she began to dedicate herself to cooking professionally. She started by making vegan and raw vegan food deliveries in the metro area of the island. Her project was called Baja Fresh Fully Raw & Vegan Cuisine. She was doing this until the middle of 2019, while she finished her bachelors degree. After a year and a half with this project, she realized that spending so much time driving, making deliveries, plus completing her studies, was causing her a lot of stress and anxiety.
She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Popular Music (Jazz) and Music Business at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. She left the kitchen for a while to dedicate herself to finishing her studies and moving to Rincón. After several conversations and seeing how the vegan movement in Rincón was exploding, she took the initiative to create Pazalsear. She considers herself completely self-taught in the kitchen, although every time she turns on a stove, or even a grill, she feels like all her ancestors take over the fire.
Pazalsear was “officially” born in August 2019. Athina noticed the lack of vegan sauces and “cheese” with actual good flavor and texture in supermarkets. She also felt the need to promote and use local products from the island. This project has opened many doors for her. One of those has been working with who is now one of her life sisters, Loraine Arroyo, owner of vegan restaurant Passiflora.
Now established in Rincón with her newly created business Pazalsear, she began making deliveries once a week. After several months, she began to sell at the Rincón Agroecological Market and from there new opportunities began to emerge.
In her experience, Rincón is a town that is quite conscious of what it eats. There is a fairly strong vegan movement compared to other towns. The perfect place to start a project dedicated to the creation and preparation of vegan products. Both with Pazalsear and as a private chef, she does not specifically target vegans but anyone who is interested in healthy eating and is open to trying different flavors.

Pasé muchos veranos en República Dominicana en casa de mis abuelos, ellos tenían una tiendita y desde pequeña siempre nos inculcaron el trabajar para uno y no para otros.”Athina Alejandra Almonte Duluc Como muchos, luego del huracán María, se quedó sin empleo y fue aquí, en el 2017, cuando comenzó a dedicarse a la cocina “profesionalmente”. Comenzó haciendo entregas de comida vegana y crudivegana en el área metropolitana a finales de este año (2017). Su proyecto se llamaba Baja Fresh Fully Raw & Vegan Cuisine. El cual estuvo trabajando hasta mediados del año 2019, mientras terminaba su bachillerato en la universidad. Luego de año y medio con este proyecto, se da cuenta que andar tanto tiempo manejando haciendo entregas, lo pesado que es el tránsito en el área metro y culminar su bachillerato, le estaba generando mucho estrés y ansiedad. Obtuvo su grado de bachillerato en Música Popular (Jazz) y Negocios de la Música en la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. Dejó la cocina por un tiempo para dedicarse a terminar sus estudios y mudarse a Rincón. Luego de varias conversaciones y ver el movimiento del veganismo en Rincón, tomó la iniciativa de crear, Pazalsear. Considera que en la cocina es completamente autodidacta, aunque cada vez que prende una estufa, un fogón y hasta un grill, siente como todos los ancestros se apoderan del fuego.
Pazalsear nace “oficialmente” en agosto del 2019. Su origen nace al notar la carencia en supermercados ya sean saludables o no, de salsas y “quesos” veganos con buen sabor, buena textura y creados sin preservativos. Además, por la necesidad de impulsar y utilizar productos locales de nuestras tierras. Este proyecto le ha abierto muchas puertas. Una de esas, ha sido trabajar con quien ahora es una de sus hermanas de vida, Loraine, empresaria y dueña de Passiflora. Como también, hacer trabajos como chef privado.
Luego de mudarse a Rincón y con Pazalsear recién creado, comenzó a hacer entregas. Esta vez una vez por semana, y claro, sin el tráfico pesado del área metro. A los varios meses comenzó a vender en el mercado Agroecológico de Rincón y de ahí comenzaron a surgir nuevas oportunidades.
En su experiencia, Rincón es un pueblo bastante consciente en lo que ingiere. Existe un movimiento vegano bastante marcado en comparación a muchos otros pueblos. Entonces pensó en que sería el lugar perfecto para comenzar un proyecto que se dedicara a la creación y preparación de productos veganos. Tanto con Pazalsear y como chef privado, no se dirige específicamente a personas veganas. Sin embargo, es para todo aquel que le interese la alimentación saludable y estén abiertos a probar sabores diferentes.

For a more advanced variation straighten your legs and reach your arms up by your ears. You can move between the two positions as well doing ten to fifteen reps for three sets.

Stand on your mat with your feet hips width distance. Shift weight into one of your feet as your bend the opposite knee lifting your foot up behind you keeping elbows wrapped into your sides with arms bent at 90 degrees. Elbows and lifted leg will stay bent while you lift them up to hip and shoulder height and back down. Use a band and weights for added resistance. Try doing three sets of ten and on your last set finish off with arms and legs lifted and then lift your standing heel and try and balance for ten seconds.

Add weights to one hand for added resistance. Stepping one foot forward hold your weight in the same hand as the forward foot. Place your opposite hand to your hip and extend your opposite leg behind you. Keep the standing leg slightly bent, back leg straight and begin to tip forward trying to tap your hand or weight to the floor while trying to lift your back leg higher than ninety degrees. Come back up, reset, move slowly, do three sets of ten on each side.

Start in downward facing dog. Lift one leg up, bend the knee swinging it forward to the same side wrist. Place the knee and leg down on the mat. Don’t try to force your foot forward. Lengthen the back leg and untuck the toes. Gently fold forward and the let the weight of your body sink down. Use a mini ball or yoga block under your hip or chest if you need extra support. Breath into the stretch for about two minutes and then switch sides.

I was stunned by this description of the all-volunteer effort that created the glorious park-like walk-and-bike public through-way now running along the lower pasture fronting the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve.
The words were from a member and leader of Amigos de Tres Palmas, the ad hoc group of Rincoenos and other Rincon residents who organized the community action that created the Paseo Comunitario Tres Palmas. The member preferred not to be named in honor of the more than 100 volunteers who devoted long hours in making the project a reality.
It is one of three positive projects developed through volunteerengaged initiatives that now enhance the beach experience. Some address issues 4 decades in the making. Why did we suddenly see these positive changes in 2022-2023?
I met with Miguel Canals Silander, an oceanographer whose day job includes directing the Center for Applied Ocean Science and Engineering at University of Puerto Rico. He quickly clarified that the origin stories of the three projects are quite different. Here are short versions of each.
“Fue una operación estilo militar”.
Me sorprendió esta descripción del esfuerzo de todos los voluntarios que crearon el increíble proyecto público para caminar y andar en bicicleta que se encuentra a lo largo de la costa frente a la Reserva Marina Tres Palmas. Las palabras fueron de un miembro y líder de Amigos de Tres Palmas, el grupo Ad Hoc de Rincoeños y otros residentes de Rincón que organizaron la acción comunitaria que creó el Paseo Comunitario Tres Palmas. El integrante prefirió no ser nombrado en honor a los más de 100 voluntarios que dedicaron largas horas para hacer realidad el proyecto.
Es uno de los tres proyectos positivos desarrollados a través de iniciativas de participación voluntaria que ahora mejoran la experiencia tanto a la playa como apreciación de la reserva marina. Algunos abordan problemas de cuatro décadas en desarrollo. ¿Por qué de repente vemos estos cambios positivos en 2022-2023?
Me reuní con Miguel Canals Silander, un oceanógrafo cuyo trabajo diario incluye dirigir el Centro de Ciencias e Ingeniería Aplicadas del Océano en la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Rápidamente aclaró que las historias de origen de los tres proyectos son bastante diferentes. Aquí le mostramos versiones cortas de cada uno.
Paseo Comunitario de Tres Palmas: Seizing the Initiative
The history of the Paseo opens one’s imagination to visionary potential for Rincon. In the 1980s, some were proposing a rails-totrails conversion linking Anasco with Aguada. A principal outcome of such dreaming was a plan backed by Rincon’s prior mayor to create a bike and pedestrian path along the water from the Balneario to the north end of what is now the Reserva.
Canals shared the Amigos’ thinking: “The last expropriation of land for the Paseo was completed 10 years ago. Yet nothing had been done. Now, with real estate going crazy, we began worrying that if no action was taken we could lose access to that land. Everybody would lose – locals, tourists, seasonal residents, everybody.”
The Amigos knew the project had strong community support. Yet they also gauged that a new open process for a project already endorsed would get mired in inaction. Instead of asking for permission, they seized the initiative.
Thus began the effective covert operation. “It took three months of planning,” Canals recounted. “We had engineers, surveyors - all volunteers. We wanted the fence to be close to where the surveyors plan had the boundary.” Secrecy was key: “We didn’t want the attention. We decided not to use social media. Everything was person-to-person with people we trusted. Each person we recruited was sworn to secrecy.”
The core group of 8 Amigos reached out to find volunteers who would be ready when the time came to establish the Paseo. Quietly donated funds purchased the stakes, barbed wire, flags, and other materials. Finally, one night in February 2022, the volunteers converged on the site. In one quick action, they built the entire kilometer of fence. The volunteers raised Puerto Rican flags at intervals, proudly declaring the Paseo for the community.
Canals underscores that multiple organizations, businesses and demographic groups that make up Rincon backed the effort.

En la década de 1980, algunos propusieron una conversión de rieles a senderos que unieran Añasco con Aguada. Un resultado principal de tal sueño fue un plan respaldado por el alcalde anterior de Rincón para crear un paseo tablado para bicicletas y peatones a lo largo del agua desde el Balneario hasta el extremo norte de lo que ahora es la Reserva.
Canals compartió el pensamiento de Amigos: “La última expropiación de terrenos para el Paseo se completó hace 10 años. Sin embargo, no se había hecho nada. Ahora, con los de bienes raíces volviéndose locos, comenzamos a preocuparnos de que si no se toman medidas drásticas, podríamos perder el acceso a esa tierra. Todos perderían: locales, turistas, residentes de temporada, TODOS”.
Los Amigos sabían que el proyecto tenía un fuerte apoyo de la comunidad. Sin embargo, también estimaron que un nuevo proceso abierto para un proyecto ya respaldado quedaría sumido en la inacción. En lugar de pedir permiso, tomaron la iniciativa.
Así comenzó la operación encubierta efectiva. “Tomó tres meses de planificación”, relató Canals. “Teníamos ingenieros, topógrafos, todos voluntarios. Queríamos que la cerca estuviera cerca de donde el plan de los topógrafos tenía el límite”. El secreto fue clave: “No queríamos atención. Decidimos no usar las redes sociales. Todo fue de persona a persona con personas en las que confiábamos. Cada persona que reclutamos prometió guardar el secreto”.
El grupo principal de 8 Amigos buscó voluntarios que estuvieran listos cuando llegara el momento de establecer el Paseo. Los fondos donados discretamente compraron las estacas, el alambre de púas, las banderas y demás materiales. Finalmente, una noche de febrero de 2022, los voluntarios se reunieron en el lugar. En una acción rápida, construyeron todo el kilómetro de valla. Los voluntarios izaron banderas puertorriqueñas a intervalos, declarando con orgullo el Paseo para la comunidad.
Canals destaca que múltiples organizaciones, empresas y grupos demográficos que conforman Rincón respaldaron el esfuerzo.
Project for Restoring the Parking Lot and Community Forest at Maria’s
The second project also goes back decades: addressing the rutted parking lot at Maria’s where runoff routinely harmed the reef.
“It has been a problem for 40 years” shared Steve Tamar, the vice-president of the Rincon chapter of the Surfrider FoundationRincon, the community group that led the creation of the Reserva. He’s coordinator of the island’s largest volunteer-staffed citizen science organization that provides weekly data on the health of the area’s beaches and reefs. It can also mobilize its supporters for important events. (Canals, for instance, credits Tamar as a key collaborator on the Paseo and many other efforts.)
Tamar explains that new parking was “built to industry standards” for sediment filtration and run off. The lead agency for the $100,000 project was Protectores de Cuencas, a Yauco-based non-profit that partners with communities and other government agencies to restore and protect watersheds and reefs. Funds were provided through federal and Puerto Rican governmental bodies. Canals notes that locals had some, if belated, input. Amigos de Tres Palmas and Salva Rincon! became advisers. The latter – which serves also as Amigos’ charitable partner - was originally organized in 2019 as a formal not-for profit and successfully stopped a huge misfit of casino proposed for the Marina area.
While there were multiple strongly held opinions on aspects of the remediation plan, all agree the project is a great improvement. In addition, in Canals’ estimate, it was “done at a fraction of what it would have cost” if not run by the NGO, Cuenca. He adds: “The project is not perfect, and we will continue improving some aspects, but is much better than before, it is amazing to see so many families enjoying the area that had remained inaccessible for years.”
Proyecto de Restauración del Estacionamiento y Bosque Comunitario en Maria’s
El segundo proyecto también se remonta a décadas atrás: abordar el estacionamiento lleno de baches en Maria’s, donde la escorrentía dañaba rutinariamente el arrecife del área.
“Ha sido un problema durante 40 años”, compartió Steve Tamar, vicepresidente del capítulo de Rincón de Surfrider Foundation-Rincón, el grupo comunitario que lideró la creación de la Reserva. Es coordinador de la organización de ciencia ciudadana con personal voluntario más grande de la isla que proporciona datos semanales sobre la salud de las playas y los arrecifes del área. También puede movilizar a sus seguidores para eventos importantes. (Canals, por ejemplo, acredita a Tamar como una colaboradora clave en el Paseo y muchos otros esfuerzos).
Tamar explica que el nuevo estacionamiento fue “construido según los estándares de la industria” para la filtración de sedimentos y la escorrentía. La agencia líder del proyecto de $100,000 fue Protectores de Cuencas, una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Yauco que se asocia con comunidades y otras agencias gubernamentales para restaurar y proteger las cuencas hidrográficas y los arrecifes. Los fondos se proporcionaron a través de organismos gubernamentales federales y puertorriqueños.
Canals señala que los locales hicieron algunas aportaciones, aunque tardías. ¡Amigos de Tres Palmas y Salva Rincón! se convirtieron en asesores. Si bien hubo múltiples opiniones muy arraigadas sobre aspectos del plan de remediación, todos están de acuerdo en que el proyecto es una gran mejora. Además, según la estimación de Canals, “se hizo a una fracción de lo que hubiera costado” si no fuera por la ONG Cuenca. Agrega: “El proyecto no es perfecto, y seguiremos mejorando algunos aspectos, pero está mucho mejor que antes, es increíble ver a tantas familias disfrutando de la zona que había permanecido inaccesible durante años”.
Bosque Comunitario La Armonia
Mitigation at Marias included limiting access to the beach frontage from Marias to the Lighthouse by all-terrain vehicles that had wreaked havoc in the area. The area had been a focus of volunteer forest restoration for a decade.
Now, via past and recent volunteer work, walkers and bikers there will find a system of gravel trails, with a bridge, benches and other amenities. It is surrounded by a vast replanting and restoration of native species that the volunteers have dubbed the Bosque Comuntario La Armonia. (Notably, Surfrider, is among the Bosque’s partners.)
I asked Miguel Canals for a contact with the Bosque. He somewhat sheepishly shared that the initiative is led by his sister, Cristina – who also works at UPR “in a program enhancing opportunities for Hispanics and females in computing.” In an interview, Cristina Canals Silander, MA, a community social worker and organizer by training, shared that her passion for protecting and restoring the environment is in her family. The father of the Canals siblings was a park ranger at the Bosque Estatal de Guanica.
Bosque Comunitario La Armonía
La mitigación en Marías incluyó limitar el acceso al frente de la playa desde Marías hasta el Faro por parte de vehículos pesados que habían causado estragos en el área. El área había sido un foco de restauración forestal voluntaria durante una década.
Ahora, a través del trabajo voluntario pasado y reciente, los caminantes y ciclistas encontrarán un sistema de tablado, área en gravilla, con un puente, bancos y otras comodidades. Está rodeado por una vasta reforestación y restauración de especies autóctonas que los voluntarios han bautizado como Bosque Comunitario La Armonía. (En particular, Surfrider se encuentra entre los socios de Bosque).
Le pedí a Miguel Canals un contacto con el Bosque. Con cierta timidez, compartió que la iniciativa está dirigida por su hermana, Cristina, quien también trabaja en la UPR en un programa que mejora las oportunidades para los hispanos y las mujeres en la informática. En una entrevista, Cristina Canals Silander, MA, trabajadora social comunitaria y organizadora de formación, compartió que su pasión por proteger y restaurar el medio ambiente está en su familia. El padre de los hermanos Canals era guardaparques en el Bosque Estatal de Guánica.
Cristina Canals estimates that 500-600 volunteers have helped out since her efforts began. These include programs through schools. “Right now,” she says, “people are very engaged in how to contribute to the area.” She recalls “volunteers with machetes opening the area, cutting pica pica and other trees that were a plague” and replacing them with endemic species.
Contributions from many small community businesses have supported the forest. In addition, a grant from Corona’s “Save the Beaches” program arrived after Canals and her group called out the beer company to account for a mess left after their sponsored surfing competition. The granted funds have helped with some of the costs, including roughly $300 per month recently “to hire a few people” for maintenance.
Looking forward
Rincon has a powerful history of volunteer-led efforts. The establishment of the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. Success against the casino. Protection of turtles, beach access, and a shoreline in Corcega. Now the Paseo and Bosque projects.
Canals credits the “amazing community” with these recent wins: “The group is too large to name them all, but they know who they are, we are a big family, I am just one more member. There are no leaders and no hierarchy, which is what makes it so successful”.
The successes make one think of other projects that might be engaged to enhance Rincon through expanded volunteer efforts. More practically, they make one think of how to sustain these recent wins. Amigos, through donations to their charitable partner, Salva Rincon, now pay $600/month to a small team to mow, trim and care for the Paseo twice monthly.
