Jeffrey Mercado Cabán was born and raised in Puerto Rico and currently lives in the Rincón, the town of beautiful sunsets. He began to show interest in drawing when he was 5 years old. At 9 years old, he started taking art classes. He developed his talent through different professors that surrounded his life during his artistic growth. He stood out as an art student at C.A.B.A. in Aguadilla and was named their Artist of Excellence. He remained there as a collaborating tutor for several years. There, together with other colleagues, they exhibited in Telemundo Gallery, in Vieques, and at different town halls of the island. Jeffrey works as a muralist painter. He has been creating murals for 20 years and embellishing the town that saw him grow and develop as a humble painter with good morals. His art is directed towards photorealism and his aspiration is to reach the essential hyperrealism of an artistic work.
Jeffrey Mercado Cabán es nacido y criado en Puerto Rico. Actualmente procedente del pueblo de los bellos atardeceres, Rincón. Comenzó a mostrar interés por el dibujo desde los 5 años. A los 9 años comenzó a tomar clases de arte. Desarrollando su talento mediante distintos profesores que rodearon su vida durante su crecimiento artístico. Se destacó como estudiante de arte en C.A.B.A Aguadilla y al ser nombrado el artista de excelencia. Se mantuvo varios años como tutor colaborador. Allí junto con otros compañeros realizó exposiciones en la Galería de Telemundo, en Vieques y en diferentes alcaldías de la isla.
Jeffrey lleva más de veinte años creando murales y embelleciendo su pueblo que le vio crecer y desarrollarse como un pintor humilde y de buena moral. Su arte es dirigido hacia la foto realismo y su aspiración es llegar al hiperrealismo esencial de una obra artística.
Jeffrey’s longing has always been that everyone can appreciate and value the simplicity and details of his work with the same virtue with which art is expressed in the world. His plan is to always carry a positive and inspiring and encouraging message to people who can enjoy rich and bright colors and identify with every brushstroke that Jeffrey adds to his artistic work.
2024 update on Jeffrey
Jeff no longer works for the municipality of Rincón. He is now self-employed, hand painting customs signs on pvc and wood. He also works as a graphic artist, creating logos and promotions for different businesses. Jeffrey also does custom murals for private residences and businesses. He also gave us a little hint of something totally new he has been working on. Stay tuned for the story in our November 2024 issue.
In 2017, just a few months after Hurricane Maria devastated the Island, we featured one of Jeffrey’s murals on the cover of El Coqui of Rincón. A brightly colored mural with the flag of Rincón, located on the way to the Rincón post office. Now in 2024 the final piece of the mural has been completed and adorns the cover of our April 2024 issue.

Update 2024 de Jeffrey
Jeff ya no trabaja para el municipio de Rincón y ahora trabaja por cuenta propia. Se ha dedicado a pintar a mano carteles personalizados en PVC y madera y también trabaja como artista gráfico. Crea logotipos y promociones para diferentes negocios y realiza murales personalizados para residencias privadas y empresas. Nuestra edición de noviembre de 2024 revelará algo nuevo en lo que Jeffrey ha estado trabajando, ¡así que mantente atento! En 2017, apenas unos meses después del huracán María, El Coquí de Rincón presentó uno de los murales de Jeffrey en la portada. El mural, que tiene la bandera de Rincón, se encuentra camino a la oficina de correos de Rincón. Ahora, en 2024, se completó la pieza final del mural y aparece en la portada de nuestra edición de abril de 2024.

Award-winning filmmaker, podcaster and surfer, Laurel Senick has published her debut novel, Foam, a thriller that begins in Wrightsville Beach and culminates in Rincón, Puerto Rico. Laurel learned to surf later in life and fell head over heels literally into that first wave. At the time she was one of just a few women surfing at her home break. Now, young women are the fastest growing sector of surfers rising by 20% since 2010 and, according to Laurel, “…sometimes we outnumber the guys. It’s a whole different vibe in the water when the women show up.”
Full of stoke for the sport, Senick’s first film a documentary called Any Given Morning provided a unique look at her eclectic community which won Best Documentary in the SoCal Film Festival and an Audience Choice Award at the Rincon International Film Festival. Since that time, Senick searched for a great novel to read featuring a surfing female lead character, but she could not find any. “Foam is the answer to that quest,” Senick says.
Released on the first day of summer, June 21st, 2023, Foam takes the reader on a wild ride of waves, freediving through underwater caves, and a race against time to find an ancient treasure. It’s the perfect vacation beach read.
Best of all, ten percent of the profits from the sale of Foam goes to both the Cape Fear Chapter and the Rincon Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation whose mission is to advocate for the “…protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people…”
Senick also leads surfing and writing retreats in Rincon, Puerto Rico throughout the winter months. Also, she co-hosts an ocean-themed podcast called Post Session Podcast that’s filled with the stoke of a surf session and the wise guidance of an ocean voyager.
La premiada cineasta, podcaster y surfista Laurel Senick publica su primera novela, Foam, un thriller que comienza en Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina siguea Canadá y culmina en Rincón, Puerto Rico. Laurel aprendió a surfear más tarde en su vida y se cayó literalmente de cabeza en su primera ola. En esa epoca, ella era una de las pocas mujeres que surfeaban. Hi! I’m Laurel Senick, an author, filmmaker, and surfer. I believe in two things wholeheartedly. Number one, I believe in divine providence. And number two, to me “story” is about those small choices that impact our lives in dramatic ways.
Here’s mine:
The Beginning:
I’m a southern girl who grew up in a small town near the Outer Banks of NC. Despite growing up close to one of the East Coast meccas of surfing, I didn’t learn to surf until I was 35. Providence struck when I was working at a health food store recovering from the film business. After eight years of working on films and television, I was burned out and broken. I’d met the coolest people and thought I had the coolest job in the world. Who wouldn’t? On my first job, sitting among the cotton fields at sunset Taj Mahal, the famous blues musician whipped out his guitar and serenaded us from his name-embroidered director’s chair. I got to ride in a helicopter over Seven Mile Island in the keys filming Steve Gutenberg on a motorcycle. I also met Lyle Lovett, Angelica Houston and Darth Vader; excuse me, James Earl Jones, along with a hundred other famous folks. It didn’t take much time for me to define myself by my “cool” job despite the fact towards the end I was partying so hard I wasn’t doing wonderful work.
Inciting Incident:
One morning, I woke up and realized it was all a mirage; the job was not glamorous, the actors were not all wonderful people, and I had become just as unreal as the product we created. It was then I reclaimed my faith and accepted life as a destinybound child of God. So, when a woman came into the health food

Aquí está mi historia:
El principio:
Soy una chica sureña que creció en un pequeño pueblo cerca de los Outer Banks de Carolina del Norte. A pesar de crecer cerca de una de las mecas del surf de la costa este, aprendí a surfear cuando tenía 35 años. La divina providencia me golpeó cuando trabajaba en una tienda naturista recuperándome del negocio del cine. Estaba agotada y destruida después de ocho años de trabajar en cine y televisión. Incidente:
Una mañana me desperté y me di cuenta de que todo era un espejismo; el trabajo no era glamoroso, no todos los actores eran personas maravillosas y yo me había vuelto tan irreal como el producto que creamos. Fue entonces cuando recuperé mi fe y acepté la vida como una hija de Dios. Entonces, cuando una mujer entró en la tienda naturista donde trabajaba vendiendo un traje de neopreno usado a

I didn’t know then she was one of the best female surfers on the East Coast and to this day close to seventy she still surfs double overhead waves. But I’d never even thought about surfing until she stood there holding up her black rubber suit for sale.
The Quest:
Less than two years later and surfing every day, I began shooting a documentary film called Any Given Morning about my surf crew and how we were all connected by this one surf break at the North end of Wrightsville Beach. At a local film festival, a fellow filmmaker said I should submit to other festivals and there were some near surf breaks. That’s how I found the Rincon International Film Festival and when my longboard club offered me their flight miles and some spending money, it was a go. I stayed at the Rincon Inn, more of a hostel than a hotel. It was 2008 and since RIFF screened films at multiple places, including Pools Bar, Shipwrecks and many more, I got to see much of Rincon. “Any Given Morning” screened at Villa Cofresi and even won an audience choice award. When I turned in my rental board at Mar Azul Surf Shop, I was encouraged to come back and bring my boyfriend Don next time.
Romantic Interlude:
Little did I know, later that year Don would propose and there was no doubt where I wanted to honeymoon! We’ve come every year since. After almost two decades of surfing, I know the woman who walked in selling a wetsuit was divine providence. What if I had been in the bathroom instead of at the register? Surfing inspired my creativity and gave me another chance to make films. My own films. It was divine providence that RIFF invited my scrappy no-budget film to come to their impressive festival. And I’m convinced it was divine providence that after visiting Rincon for a dozen years, Don and I found a place we could afford only two blocks from the Rincon Inn.

La búsqueda:
Menos de dos años después, comencé a surfear todos los días. Comencé a grabar un documental llamado Any Given Morning sobre mi equipo de surf y cómo todos estábamos conectados por esta única ola de surf en el extremo norte de Wrightsville Beach. En un festival de cine local, un colega cineasta me dijo que debería presentarme a otros festivales, y había algunos lugares cerca de lugares para surfear. Así encontré el Festival Internacional de Cine de Rincón, y cuando mi club de longboard me ofreció sus millas de vuelo y algo de dinero para gastar, lo intenté. Me quedé en el Rincón Inn, que es más un hostal que un hotel. Era 2008 y, dado que RIFF proyectó películas en varios lugares, incluidos Pools Bar, Shipwrecks y muchos más, pude ver gran parte de Rincón. El surf inspiró mi creatividad y me dio otra oportunidad de hacer películas— mis propias películas. Fue la providencia divina que el RIFF invitara mi película básica y sin presupuesto a su impresionante festival. Y estoy convencida de que fue la providencia divina que después de visitar Rincón durante una docena de años, Don y yo encontramos un lugar que podíamos pagar a sólo dos cuadras del Rincón Inn.
Dark Night of the Soul:
During those early years of learning to surf, I read every surf novel available. I longed to read a story where the main character was a female surfer, but there weren’t any. In 2012 after a devastating miscarriage, a friend called and told me about a writers group starting in our area. I thought it would be a beneficial setting for healing and processing some of the pain. I’d been writing non-fiction for a while when the leader of our critique group said to me, “You’re so creative you should try fiction.” This time I recognized divine providence knocking, so I began the book I desired to read but couldn’t find.
Climax:
What I didn’t know was it would take almost a decade to complete. I would have never started if I’d known. Edit begat edit, begat edit, and so on for eight long years. I wondered if Foam would ever be ready to publish.
Filmmaking felt so much easier than writing a book. But as I wrote and rewrote, my love of films with action-packed adventure guided my writing and of course a love of waves and Rincon were prominent too. Already, there was a rollercoaster ride of action and romance, a hunt for Cofresi’s treasure, freediving through underwater caves at Desecheo, and of course, surfing at Tres Palmas. I kept telling myself, as long as I don’t quit, I will finish.
Resolution:
Finally completed, Foam was released on the first day of summer 2023. It’s about an aspiring investigative journalist who can’t ask herself the hard question of how she’s ended up a surf bum on a tropical island with a growing drug problem but when a dead freediver washes ashore, she finds herself uncovering the story of a lifetime.
Epilogue:
I’m editing my second novel titled Luminescent, that also takes place in Rincon. It’s a star-crossed romance about an anxiety-riddled surf photographer haunted by a past mistake which ruined her beloved career and his before they ever meet. When they both find themselves on the same film set, he develops a crush on her without knowing her true identity. But when he’s arrested for a crime he didn’t commit, she risks everything to save him.

Noche oscura del alma:
Leí todas las novelas de surf disponibles durante esos primeros años de aprendizaje del surf. Quería leer una historia donde la protagonista fuera una mujer surfista, pero no las había. En 2012, después de un aborto espontáneo devastador, una amiga me llamó y me habló de un grupo de escritores que estaba comenzando en nuestra área. Pensé que sería un entorno beneficioso para curar y procesar parte del dolor. Llevaba un tiempo escribiendo no ficción cuando el líder de nuestro grupo de crítica dijo: “Eres tan creativa que deberías probar la ficción”. Reconocí que la divina providencia llamaba a mi puerta una vez más, así que comencé el libro que deseaba leer pero no encontraba.
Clímax:
No sabía que tardaría casi una década en completarlo, nunca habría empezado si lo hubiera sabido. La edición engendró la edición, engendró la edición, y así sucesivamente durante ocho años. Me preguntaba si Foam algún día estaría listo para publicar.
Hacer cine me pareció mucho más fácil que escribir un libro, pero mientras escribía y reescribía, mi amor por las películas de aventuras llenas de acción guió mi escritura y, por supuesto, el amor por las olas y Rincón también fue prominente. Ya había una montaña rusa de acción y romance, una búsqueda del tesoro de Cofresí, buceo en cuevas submarinas del Desecheo y, por supuesto, surf en Tres Palmas. Me decía a mí misma que mientras no renunciara, terminaría.
Resolución:
Cuando finalmente completé Foam se estrenó el primer día del verano de 2023. Trata de una aspirante a periodista de investigación que no puede preguntarse cómo terminó siendo una vagabunda del surf en una isla tropical con un creciente problema de drogas, pero cuando un apneista muerto llega a la orilla, se encuentra descubriendo la historia de su vida.
Epílogo:
Estoy editando mi segunda novela, Luminescent, que también se desarrolla en Rincón. Es un romance desventurado sobre una fotógrafa de surf con problemas de ansiedad, atormentada por un error del pasado que arruinó su amada carrera y la de él antes de que se conocieran. Cuando ambos se encuentran en el mismo set de filmación, ella se enamora de él sin conocer su verdadera identidad. Pero cuando lo arrestan por un crimen que no cometió, ella arriesga todo para salvarlo.

Jeanette Lerner is a native of Long Island, New York, and owner and founder of Rincón Meditation Club. She has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and six years of experience in the real estate industry on Long Island. She is passionate about surfing, yoga, nutrition, holistic wellness, nature, and travel. She grew up around her family’s nursery business, so she has watched its journey to today’s success over the years. This experience has motivated her to put all her energy into everything she does, reflected in her results.
In 2021, she enrolled in a Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga Nidra course with the same teacher with whom she had taken classes as a teenager. In 2022, she decided to start a new adventure with her husband, living a slower pace of life that would allow them to raise their daughters on a beautiful island surrounded by nature. She believes that nature is the best medicine! Her most outstanding achievement has been mothering her two beautiful daughters, Ozzy and Luna.
Rincón Meditation Club
The year 2020 was undoubtedly very intense for many people around the world. Four years later, we continue to see this reboot’s impact on the world and humanity. During the unfortunate lockdown, Jeanette decided to deepen her meditation practice and embarked on a deep journey into her own soul. Fortunately, during difficult times in her life, she always had support in positive and healthy outlets to control her emotions, anxiety, or fears. At these times, she tends to delve into yoga, eat nutritious foods, and immerse herself in nature. Months later, she found a Mindfulness, Meditation, and Yoga Nidra course online and signed up.
Shortly after becoming certified, she began offering meditations to friends and family to define and shape her meditation style. She felt it in her soul to work more with the power of crystals and the healing power of sound, which led her to incorporate crystal sound bowls into her meditations. A few months after settling on the island, she introduced the Rincón Meditation Club to the community. There, she offered morning classes in Sandy Beach, thinking that if no one showed up for class, she would use that time for her own meditation. It was a slow start, but she continued to show up! Until little by little, more people began attending her classes. She now performs a brief residency at the iconic Tropical Treehouse. Having this space to share her healing gifts with others brings her immense joy. She feels inspired by all the beautiful souls who enter her classes and want to delve into her soul, transmute, and ascend!
Rincón Meditation Club is for everyone: anyone willing to step away from the past and future and tune into the peace of the present moment and anyone on an emotional or spiritual healing journey. Lerner is blessed with the gift of channeling powerful, transformative meditations that are simple enough for novice meditators yet nourishing for the souls of devotees. Rincón Meditation Club
El año 2020 fue sin duda muy intenso para muchas personas en todo el mundo. Cuatro años más tarde seguimos viendo el impacto que este reinicio tuvo en el mundo y la humanidad. Durante el desafortunado encierro, Jeanette decidió profundizar en la práctica de la meditación y emprendió un viaje profundo a su propia alma. Afortunadamente en momentos difíciles de su vida, siempre tuvo apoyo en salidas positivas y saludables para controlar sus emociones, ansiedad o miedos. En éstos momentos tiende a profundizar en la yoga, comer alimentos saludables y sumergirse en la naturaleza. Meses más tardes, encontró en la web un curso de Mindfulness, Meditación y Yoga Nidra y se inscribió.
Poco después de certificarse, comienza a ofrecer meditaciones a amigos y familiares para definir y dar forma a su propio estilo de meditación. Sentía en su alma trabajar más con el poder de los cristales y el poder curativo del sonido, lo que la llevó a incorporar cuencos de cristal con sonido en sus meditaciones. A los pocos meses de instalarse en la isla, presentó Rincón Meditation Club a la comunidad. Allí ofrecía clases matutinas en Sandy Beach con la mentalidad de que si nadie se presentaba a la clase, usaría ese tiempo para su propia meditación. ¡Fue un comienzo lento pero continuó presentándose! Hasta que poco a poco, más y más gente comenzó a asistir a sus clases. Ahora realiza una breve residencia en la icónica Tropical Treehouse. Tener este espacio para compartir sus dones curativos con los demás le brinda inmensa alegría. ¡Realmente siente inspiración por todas las almas hermosas que entran a sus clases y quieren profundizar en su propia alma, transmutar y ascender! Rincón Meditation Club es para todos, cualquiera que esté dispuesto a dar un paso lejos de su pasado y futuro, y sintonizarse con la paz del momento presente. También para cualquier persona que esté en un viaje de sanación emocional o espiritual. A sound bath is a meditative journey where a trained practitioner “bathes” attendees in sound frequencies. These frequencies are produced by a variety of instruments specifically tuned to certain notes and hertz frequencies that allow the body to enter a state of deep relaxation and promote healing. Some of the instruments used are crystal singing bowls, singing bowls, chimes, rattles, gongs, and voices.

In recent years, sound baths have become very popular in wellness. Many people love to experience sound healing because it does not require much from the individual. You show up, grab a comfy blanket and pillow, lie down, and listen to the relaxing sounds. They allow the individual to enter a state of deep relaxation, and a feeling of happiness will persist for several hours after a session. For deep healing to occur, the individual must also meditate. When the individual enters a meditative state, physiologically, the brain will transition to an Alpha or Theta brain wave.
Meditation is an awareness that goes beyond the mind. It allows us to access our inner being, higher self, or soul. Entering these deep states of consciousness gives the individual access to mystical experiences and clarity of the soul’s life purpose. Combining meditation and sound baths is complementary and allows healing and clarity to occur more quickly.

Whenever I feel out of balance, I reflect on my mantra and ask myself these questions.”
