Yosimar Reyes (he/him/his)
Nationally-acclaimed Poet, Public Speaker, and Performing Artist
“Hailing from East San Jose by way of Guerrero, Mexico, Reyes quickly made a name for himself at the tender age of sixteen, exploding onto local Bay Area stages and captivating his audiences with deeply moving spoken word performances. Reyes’ repertoire has since evolved to include nationally-acclaimed keynotes, writing workshops, and his one-man show, Prieto, a coming-of-age story that explores subjects like migration, sexuality, and socio-economic struggle all while empowering his audiences to tap into their own creative potential. Through his inspiring narrative and indomitable presence, Yosimar Reyes continues to be a leading voice in contemporary poetry and an important figure for queer and undocuemtned immigrant communities”.

Elsie Vizcarra (she/her/ella)
B.A. Latin American & Latino Studies, B.A. Critical Race & Ethnic Studies, B.A. Education, Democracy & Justice
Hola!, my name is Elsie Vizcarra (she/her/ella), and I’m a proud fourthyear student graduating with a triple major in Latin American and Latino Studies, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, and Education, Democracy, and Justice. During my time at UC Santa Cruz, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Residential Assistant at College Nine for three years, the Lead Retention Coordinator for Chicanx and Latine Educandose, and the Chair of Engaging Education, our student-led outreach and retention center for students of color. Outside of academics and organizing, I find joy in reading, spending time with friends, going on hikes, and being surrounded by the redwoods. Today, I’m proud to celebrate this milestone with my comunidad, my mentors, and my loved ones who made this journey possible.
Since 1983, White Hawk Indian Council for Children, a non-profit organization has existed in Watsonville, CA to engage the youth of our communityinindigenouspracticesprimarilythroughdanzaAzteca.
Mariachi Eterno de UCSC is an inclusive and diverse student organization at UC Santa Cruz, founded in 2018. Our mission is to create a safe space to gather as students to practice mariachi music and Mexican expressive culture for both the university and the local Santa Cruz community.
A huge thank you to the El Centro Student Program Coordinators Joselyn Salgado, Giovanna Fernandez and Anahi Matias Santiago who committed their time to make this ceremony memorable. UCSC thanks them for their dedication and passion for planning this ceremony. Additionally, we want to recognize El Centro Director Xiomara López and El Centro Program Coordinator Jailene Tzintzun who guided and supported these leaders along the way.
