Tener acceso a los servicios de salud en este país es muy importante y una de las mejores maneras para asegurar que tengamos acceso es teniendo una cobertura médica. Hace unos años, yo empecé a tener cobertura médica. El sistema de salud es muy complicado y difícil de entender. Yo no entendía los tipos de planes médicos que mi trabajo ofrecía y mucho menos los términos, como el deducible. No sabía cuáles doctores aceptaban mi seguro médico ni cómo checar. A veces por miedo o por falta de información no le damos la importancia a seguir con las cosas, pero ya cuando se informa uno y sabemos que es lo que se puede prevenir, no dudamos en hacerlo.

Hice una cita en El Centro y me explicaron todo para yo poder entender mi cobertura. Me ayudaron a buscar un doctor primario, cuánto tendría que pagar en mi primera cita, y cómo manejar mi cuenta de la cobertura médica. Pregunté sobre las opciones de seguro médico para personas que no están ofrecidos cobertura por su trabajo, porque tengo muchas amigas que se encuentran en esa situación. Explicaron que hay la opción de Medicaid, pero que hay muchas personas que piensan que no calificarán y no preguntan. Si usted ha pasado por algo similar o tiene dudas sobre Medicaid, busque ayuda no se deje llevar por lo que dice la gente. Cada situación y caso es diferente, pero no debemos tener miedo de preguntar o intentarlo.

Let’s Not Be Afraid to Ask

Having access to health services in this country is very important and one of the best ways to ensure that we have access is by having medical coverage. A few years ago, I began to have medical coverage. The health system is very complicated and difficult to understand. I didn’t understand the types of health plans my job offered, much less the terms, like the deductible. I didn’t know which doctors accepted my health insurance or how to even check. Sometimes due to fear or lack of information we do not give importance to continuing with things, but when we are informed and know what can be prevented, we do not hesitate to do so.

I made an appointment at El Centro and they explained everything to me so I could understand my coverage. They helped me find a primary doctor, how much I would have to pay for my first appointment, and how to manage my health coverage bill. I asked about health insurance options for people who are not covered by their job, because I have many friends who are in that situation. They explained that there is Medicaid as an option, but there are many people who think they won’t qualify and don’t ask. If you have been through something similar or have questions about Medicaid, seek help, don’t be swayed by what people say. Every situation and case are different, but we should not be afraid to ask or try.

Hay Que Saber Los Requisitos

Tener cobertura médica te abre puertas que típicamente están cerradas. Medicaid es una cobertura médica que yo necesitaba, pero no sabía que existía. Por mi edad y por mi condición, solo puedo trabajar un poco para pagar lo básico. No me ofrecen cobertura en mi trabajo y nadie sabía sobre otras opciones para mí, y sentía que nadie me podía guiar por el camino correcto. Ya estoy mayor de edad y tengo muchos achaques. Al no tener cobertura médica no tenía acceso a un doctor de cabecera. Siempre tenía que posponer mis visitas médicas por no tener con que pagar la consulta.

Al llegar a El Centro, me hicieron unas preguntas para saber si era elegible para una cobertura y ese mismo día ya estábamos llenando la aplicación de Medicaid. Sentí un gran alivio al saber que de ahora en adelante ya podría tener un doctor para mi cuidado médico y acceso a los especialistas que tanto busque. No puedo dejar de pensar en las personas de mi edad, que no están enteradas de las opciones de cobertura médica que hay disponibles. Yo voy a comenzar a hablar de esto con más personas porque hay muchas allá afuera que lo necesitan. Nosotros los hispanos siempre pensamos que no tenemos derechos en este país. Los requisitos son mínimos y sí, nosotros somos elegibles también para una cobertura accesible y de buena calidad.

You Should Know the Requirements

Having health coverage opens doors for you that are typically closed without it. Medicaid is health coverage that I needed but didn’t know existed. Because of my age and my condition, I can only work a little to pay for the basics. I am not offered coverage and no one at my job knew about other coverage options for me; no one could guide me on the right path. I am already older and I have many ailments. Without medical coverage, I did not have access to a primary care doctor. I always had to postpone my medical visits because I didn’t have the money to pay for the consultation.

Upon arriving at El Centro, they asked me a few questions to find out if I was eligible for coverage and that same day we were already filling out the Medicaid application. I felt a great relief knowing that from now on I would be able to have a doctor for my medical care and access to the specialists that I have been looking for, for so long. I can’t stop thinking about people my age who are unaware of health coverage options available. I am going to start talking about this with more people because there are many out there who need it. We Hispanics always think that we have no rights in this country. The requirements are minimal and yes, we too are eligible for affordable and good quality coverage.

Mantener a nuestros adolescentes seguros y saludables es algo que esperamos hacer siempre como padres. Cada día parece que hay más enfermedades, virus y bichos dando vueltas. En algunos casos las escuelas cierran o hay muchos estudiantes fuera al mismo tiempo. También existe una mayor necesidad de servicios de salud mental para nuestros adolescentes y los costos médicos siguen aumentando cada año. Encontrar un seguro puede ser difícil y costoso, especialmente cuando no ha tenido que buscar antes.

Recientemente, me encontré en una situación insegura. Me acababa de divorciar y tenía la custodia de mi hijo. Su padre siempre le había proporcionado un seguro a través de su trabajo, pero llegó a ser demasiado caro para pagarlo. Tenía que encontrar la cobertura para mi hijo de alguna manera. Keeping our teenagers safe and healthy is something that we hope to always do as parents. Each day it seems that there are more illnesses, viruses, and bugs going around. In some cases schools close or there are a lot of students out at the same time. There is also more need for mental health services for our teens and medical costs keep increasing every year. Finding insurance can be hard and expensive, especially when you haven’t had to look before.

Recently, I found myself in an unsure situation. I had just become divorced and had custody of my son. His father had always provided insurance for him through his work, but it got to be too expensive to afford. I had to find my son coverage somehow. I had heard about KanCare and decided to apply. I will be able to provide my son health insurance now, without having to break the bank. Even if you’re not sure you’re eligible, it doesn’t hurt to apply for coverage. Let’s keep our kids covered and healthy.

Una Gran Ayuda para Personas de mi Edad

Medicaid es un programa muy importante, especialmente para personas como yo. Mi nombre es Ramon. Yo tengo 65 años y ya estoy retirado. En diciembre del año 2022, fui al hospital de emergencias. Me había enfermado y de repente necesitaba atención médica. Después de eso, me comenzaron a llegar facturas medicas que yo no entendía. Tenía Medicare y aun me estaban cobrando para los servicios. Fui a El Centro para que me ayudaran a entender las facturas. Resultó que mi Medicare había cubierto la mayor parte de mi visita al hospital pero que yo era responsable para la diferencia. Lo que restaba de la factura medica no era demasiado, pero como pago una prima mensual para la Parte B de mi Medicare, lo que me sobra de mi pensión no es suficiente para cubrir mis gastos del hogar más gastos médicos.

En El Centro me explicaron que era posible que yo aplicara para Medicaid también. Medicare cubre la mayoría de los servicios primero y lo que resta, Medicaid puede cubrir. Entonces, me ayudaron a llenar la solicitud y afortunadamente, Medicaid me aprobó. Califique para el programa QMB que me ayudaría a cubrir mis primas mensuales y las facturas médicas que me pueden llegar. Les recomiendo a otras personas en mi situación que busquen información sobre las ayudas que da Medicaid porque la verdad, yo no sabía que esto era posible. A Great Help for People my Age

Medicaid is a very important program, especially for people like me. My name is Ramon. I am 65 years old and already retired. In December 2022, I went to emergency room at the hospital. I had gotten sick and suddenly needed medical attention. After that, I started getting medical bills that I didn’t understand. I had Medicare and they were still charging me for the services. I went to El Centro for help in understanding the bills. It turned out that my Medicare had covered most of my hospital visit but that I was responsible for the difference. What was left of the medical bill was not much, but since I pay a monthly premium for Part B for my Medicare, what I have left over from my pension is not enough to cover both my household expenses and medical expenses.

At El Centro they explained that it was possible for me to apply for Medicaid as well. Medicare covers most services first and what’s left, Medicaid can cover. So they helped me fill out the application and luckily, Medicaid approved me. I qualified for the QMB program that would help me cover my monthly premiums and any medical bills that may come my way. I recommend to others in my situation that they look for information about the help that Medicaid gives because the truth is, I did not know that this was possible. It is a great help for people my age who are in a similar situation like mine.
