ith the Census rolling out in April of 2020, coordinators from the U.S. Census Bureau are working actively to engage hard-to-count communities to ensure their accurate representation on a national level.

However, for hard-tocount Indigenous communities throughout the United States, participating in a federal survey can be a frightening prospect because of the long painful history that exists between the U.S.Government and Indiginous communities.

“There is a real lack of trust of the federal government when it comes to filling out the information on our families,” said Britta Guerrero, CEO of the Sacramen-

to Native American Health Center (SNAHC). “There is historical trauma that is still being suffered by our communities, children being taken from households and being sent to boarding schools, treaties signed and not honored.

There is a high percentage of military service in our Native communities and our veterans are still lacking necessary services and many are struggling with addiction and homelessness so the desire to be reported and counted isn’t a priority when the system that should have taken care of them, hasn’t.

SNAHC is a federally qualified health center that provides primary care, dental care, primary health psychiatry and optometry to Native populations and the underinsured living in urban areas. They are also leading

the Native American Complete Count Subcommittee in Sacramento, where they are working to engage Indiginous groups in the census through targeted outreach.

Jenine Gains, SNAHC’s communications manager, said they are working with Sacramento County to incorporate 2020 Census messaging through already existing events, like Pow Wows, to target outreach to the Indiginous community that live in the county.

t was a busy afternoon at the San Francisco City Hall where roughly 100 people—including the Board of Supervisors, city officials, representatives of non-profit organizations and public—gathered for the city council meeting on Monday, July 22. Of all the items on the agenda, one was a pressing concern for all those in attendance: climate change.

In 2017, San Francisco experienced the hottest day in the city’s history. 2018 was even worse. With entire California towns destroyed by the wildfires, San Francisco was reported to have the worst air quality in the world in the aftermath. Earlier this year, massive rainfalls resulted in flooding along the Embarcadero and other low lying areas of the city.

“Folks, climate change isn’t coming, it’s already here,” San Francisco District Supervisor 8 Rafael Mandelman said. “An emergency situation calls for an emergency response, and this hearing should help us better understand how our city can do its part to achieve the deep emissions [greenhouse gas] reductions without which humans will not survive.”

Earlier in July, the San Francisco Department of Environment released Focus 2030, a detailed report on the pathway to net zero carbon dioxide emissions for the city. The report states that the city has already reduced its emissions by 36 percent, but as the SF Environment’s Director Debbie Raphael said in the meeting, while that is laudable, it is not enough.

“When we talk about equitable climate action, we’re talking about paying attention to public health, to affordability, to jobs for all,” Raphael said.

The Focus 2030 report is the answer to what it looks like to achieve net zero emissions in San Francisco. The good news in moving forward is that we know where our emissions come from—about half from buildings and about half from transportation.

“We know where we need to make those deep reductions,” said Wendy Goodfriend, Climate Program Manager at SF Environment.

“And we have about 10 years to act.”

The Focus 2030 report is a strong foundation in the city’s agenda to address the climate crisis. The report quantifies the potential emission reductions based on the city’s ambitious climate goals.

The report shows that if San Francisco commits to supplying 100 percent renewable electricity, prioritizes low carbon forms of transport such as transit, walking and biking, reduces automobile dependency and consumption of energy, and moves away from fossil fuels, the city could potentially see a 68 percent reduction in emissions below 1990 levels by 2030 and 90 percent by 2050.

San Francisco aims to focus on seven strategic priorities for emissions reductions that target three main sectors—buildings, transportation and waste, according to the report.

For buildings, reductions can be made by increasing energy efficiency, electrifying all new and existing buildings, and making sure

that the city is supplied by 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030.

For the transportation sector, between now and 2050, emissions reductions depend equally on transportation mode shift and the electrification of all cars and trucks.

Lowell Chu, Senior Energy Efficiency Specialist at SF Environment, presented some alarming numbers in the meeting. Currently, San Francisco hosts over 450,000 registered vehicles and sees over 135,000 commutes daily.

Sarah Jones, Planning Director at San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) agrees that too much travel in San Francisco happens by car. “Whether it’s people driving themselves, people using ride hail or the growing use of delivery services, this is the most harmful transportation choice that people

can make,” Jones said.

Lastly, the report states that reducing the amount of material sent to landfill and increasing the recovery of recyclable and compostable materials is key to reducing emissions in the waste sector.

Ultimately, the report’s key findings summarizes that for impactful global emissions reductions, San Francisco must significantly reduce consumption of goods and the amount of refuse—recyclables, compostables and trash bound for landfills—the city generates.

Raphael further said in the meeting that the SF Environment’s equitable strategy for effective climate action is summarized in the following words: zero, eighty, one hundred, roots.

The 0-80-100-Roots Climate Action Framework, explained in the report outlines four central goals: Zero Waste—By 2030, reduce refuse generated by 15 percent and disposal to landfill by 50 percent below 2015 levels; Mode Shift—By 2030, increase sustainable trips to 80 percent; Energy— Supply 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030 and 100 percent renewable energy by 2050; Roots— Cut off carbon through ecosystems restoration, increased urban tree canopy, and compost application.

Once the discussion was opened to the public in the city council meeting, over 40 members of the audience from various environmental organizations and activist groups lined up to put forward their opinion on the city’s strategy.

Christopher Pederson, a resident of District 7, said that he felt the Focus 2030 report had one astonishing omission: land use. “San Francisco, by virtue of its mild climate, it’s walkability, by its extensive transit, that it really is one of the most appropriate places from a climate perspective to be providing more housing,” Pederson said.

Pederson explained that the exclusionary low density zoning that currently governs much of San Francisco forces people to locate in areas that have more extreme climates and are more automobile dependent. Increasing affordable housing in lower density areas of the city would bring people into areas which have good transit service.

Raphael said in her closing words that ultimately, San Francisco needs to follow a strategy which points us in the direction of equity, inclusiveness, and making sure that the most vulnerable among us are the first on our thought process and the first on our resource allocation.

We are all spiritual beings, walking this journey together and growing with one another.” The City of Puebla and its Mayor Claudia Rivera Vivanco will host an exhibition by Michael Ríos at the Central patio of the Municipal Palace of Puebla for La Diáspora Festival.

I

am not trying to alarm anyone, but I am an immigrant! And it is likely that if you are reading this you are too, or your parents, or your grandparents. We live in a community of immigrants, within a country of immigrants — a country that nevertheless seeks to make us feel isolated and alienated from each other in order to control us, exploit us and abuse us, even though we are together on this journey.

In the last few years, we’ve developed an awareness that words like “Hispanic,” “Latino,” “Latinx,” etc. in the United States are nothing more than made-up labels that oversimplify our identities, our intersections, and our history as a continent. A history that is inextricably linked to colonization and oppression, but also with resistance, ancient traditions and everything in between.

That is why La Diáspora Festival celebrates the coming together of artists in Latino communities of the U.S. (their words, not ours), and supports the journey to reconnect their creative cultural heritage with communities in Latin America. It is an effort in cultural diplomacy, to proudly showcase how we are harnessing the power of art to generate safe spaces and empower our communities in the United States.

This is a social experiment that seeks to honor our shared journey

through the exploration of all our intersections, which is why we seek to create an inclusive platform with artists who identify as Indigenous, Afro-Latinx, and LGBTQ, among many others, and we invite a diversity of voices to be present—yours included.

This is a community-driven festival, and in order to make it happen, we are raising $15K to pay for artist transportation and accommodations,

production expenses and the creation of a documentary. In order to reach our goal, we have created a crowdfunding campaign (bit.ly/ladiasporafestival), and are also hosting fundraising events in the Mission before we go to Puebla, México in November of this year.

o estoy tratando de alarmar a nadie, pero SOY UN INMIGRANTE. Y es probable que si estás leyendo esto, tú también, o tus padres o tus abuelos. Vivimos en una comunidad de inmigrantes, dentro de un país de inmigrantes; un país que, sin embargo, busca hacernos sentir aislados y alienados el uno del otro para controlarnos, explotarnos y abusar de nosotros, a pesar de que estamos juntos en este viaje.

En los últimos años, hemos difundido el conocimiento de que palabras como hispano, latino, latinx, etc., en los EEUU no son más que etiquetas inventadas que simplifican demasiado nuestras identidades, nuestras intersecciones y nuestra historia como continente. Una historia que está inextricablemente vinculada a la colonización y la opresión, pero también a la resistencia y tradiciones antiguas.

Es por eso que el Festival de la Diáspora celebra la reunión de artistas en comunidades latinas de este país, y apoya el viaje para volver a conectar su herencia cultural creativa con las comunidades de América Latina. Es un esfuerzo en diplomacia cultural, para mostrar con orgullo cómo estamos aprovechando el poder del arte para generar espacios seguros y empoderar a nuestras comunidades en los EEUU. Este es un experimento social que busca honrar nuestro viaje com-

he known stories of migrants are various and varied. Some are recent, others that date back to a past that reminds us that these obstacles persist. Some perhaps involve new characters, but with the circumstances the same or worse.

This social phenomenon has gained special global attention after being documented and spread with great effort across social media networks that document testimonies of the protagonists. Even so, the day when we’ll finally see a consensus reached that offers a solution seems distant, because the origins of migration is the result of a fairly complex reality: world economic crisis, wars, violence, climate change, corruption and social inequality.

These realities may not be present in the conscience of the most innocent, children, who too are also migrants. They are forced to leave their homes, family and friends, to go where they hope to be reunited with their loved ones. Migration narrated from a child’s eyes can describe scenes, that with innocence, reflect that hope or desire, but also the need to seek new opportunities.

The candor that characterizes young migrants has been well captured with words and images in the recent book by René Colato Laínez, prolific and renowned author of Salvadoran origin, whose work is narrated from the perspective of a child.

René himself embodies a migrant who, as a child, had to flee his country in the face of prevailing violence.

His recent publication, a bilingual reissue of “My Shoes and I: Crossing Three Borders,” is a children’s book beautifully illustrated by Mexican artist Fabricio Vanden Broeck, and sponsored by the publishing label Arte Público/Piñata Books, in which the author shares his odyssey from El Salvador to the northern border of Mexico.

Together they cross three borders and on the way little René is helped by a magical object: a pair of new shoes that his mother sent him before leaving that become a good luck charm and traveling companions that give him strength to continue his journey.

Along the way, father and son must face challenges and threats that not everyone, much less a young child, could and should not face.

Despite being a brief autobiographical work, the richness in the language and images with which the author narrates his journey allows any reader to imagine not only the spaces described, but also the emotions of a small migrant child who with an innocent lens, explains to

himself the reasons that place him in each of the situations that he must overcome. Walking, running, swimming without fatigue, are the actions that he must carry out with strength and optimism until he reaches his goal: his mother’s arms and a new opportunity for a better life.

“One, two, three, my shoes and I have to continue. We have to cross these mountains and a river. Mom will be waiting for us on the other side, says Dad. We run. We stop. We fall. We get up. We walk. We rest. We run again.”

It seems that, in the eyes of adults, the reality around the phenomenon of migration can be explained because they have more experience to understand the social, political or economic reasons that produce it. But from the noble eyes of a child, those reasons are unneces-

sary when it comes to running away from danger or facing uncertain fears in order to be close to their loved ones once more and to try their luck in another place far from violence and inequality.

The reader of this book becomes a witness and traveling companion of all the Renés who come and go across borders, overcoming obstacles and leaving their childhood behind because they must bravely hold on to hope. This is a must read to “put yourself in the shoes” of those who migrate, to understand where they come from, what they leave behind and what they crave.

on muchas y variadas las historias de migrantes que se conocen, algunas recientes, otras que se remontan a un pasado que nos recuerda que la problemática persiste, tal vez con nuevos personajes involucrados, pero mismas o peores circunstancias.

Este fenómeno social ha adquirido especial atención a nivel global tras ser documentado y difundido con mayor ahínco a través de las redes sociales que registran testimonios de sus protagonistas. Aun así parece lejano el día en que se llegue a un consenso que le de solución, porque su origen es resultado de una realidad bastante compleja: crisis económica mundial, guerras, violencia, cambio climático, corrupción y desigualdad social.

Estas realidades pueden no estar presentes en la conciencia de los más inocentes, los niños, que también migrantes, se ven forzados a abandonar sus hogares, familiares y amigos, para dirigirse hacia donde esperan estar mejor al lado de sus seres queridos. La migración narrada desde la mirada de un niño puede describir escenas que con inocencia reflejan esa esperanza o deseo, pero también

la necesidad de buscar nuevas oportunidades.

La candidez que caracteriza a los jóvenes migrantes ha sido bien captada con palabras e imágenes en el reciente libro de René Colato Lainez, prolífico y reconocido autor de origen salvadoreño, cuya obra se narra desde la perspectiva de un niño. El mismo René encarna a un migrante que de pequeño tuvo que huir de su país ante la violencia imperante.

magine a beautiful day. One inviting to get out and enjoy the warm sun of a fast disappearing summer.

Maybe jump in the water. Or simply lay down on a beach, eyes closed, hearing the music of the waves and the cry of the seagulls as they fly above.

Also around us, the sound of children laughing. Many brown children there. Perhaps Latino, perhaps Indian.

They make sand castles, starting with pieces of driftwood that have come to rest on the shore. They adorn their castles with broken shells, pieces of dry seaweed, corpses of little marine creatures, a crab leg, a feather, a piece of glass made round and soft by the pounding of the sea.

A couple of Asian fishermen try their luck a few yards away. Close by, a young mixed-race couple holds hands, She looks Asian American, he looks European American. It is a rather odious distinction that is the norm in this country. Our skin-deep country.

The parents keep a careful eye on their children. “Don’t go in the water, Ashish!” “Roberto! Don’t throw sand at your sister!”

The children obey and control their innocent mischief. The parents relax and return to enjoying the day, sharing a simple picnic, a well-turned story, perhaps a concern, a concern that might disappear under the spell of the beauty all around. If not disappear, made lighter by the sunny day.

Then, a young white kid, about 19, is running towards where the people are gathered. He looks agitated and carries a large backpack.

Suddenly, the atmosphere changes and everyone seem to go on alert.

An alert made necessary by cruel recent events.

Why is that young man running towards the beach goers? What is he carrying? “Roberto! Ashish! Es-

The young kid with the backpack stops a couple of feet away from the group, breathing hard. He pauses for a second and then asks: “Excuse me.

I left a jacket around here? Has anyone seen it?”

There is a brief pause. Then, one of the mothers speaks: “Yes! I found it! I was going to give it to the ranger at the entrance.”

She then picks a jacket that was carefully folded on the sand and gives it to the young man. He lets out a big sigh of relief, takes the piece of clothing from the woman and smiles, as he puts it inside the backpack.

“Thanks! My mom would’ve killed me if I lost it! She just got it for me!”

Then, he leaves.

Calm returns to the beach. All around, people give each other some “knowing” smiles, rolling their eyes, as if recognizing, without words, a discomfort that everyone had shared, feeling a little silly for it. They had just racially-profiled that nice young man! A shame indeed!

It had been a moment of trust broken. A feeling of fear that everyone wishes that it would not exist.

Inside, all know that they will again react in the same way. Until there is evidence that the illness called racism is erased in this country.

We are still reeling from what took place Just a few days ago, when thousands of people enjoyed the sun, the music and the garlic-flavored fares in a large, family-friendly fair in Gilroy, California. Or when they filled the stores in a mall in El Paso, Texas, looking for good deals on “back-to-school sales.” Or other people, in Dayton, Ohio, as they relaxed, late at night, enjoying drinks and music in the summer night.

In all three cases, three young white men attacked those gatherings, at least two of them with the clear intention to kill brown people. “I was targeting Mexicans’, said the one in El Paso. So, he drove for hours, from one corner of Texas to the oth-

er, armed with his very indecently legal AK-47, a weapon designed to “kill, kill, kill!,”—as they teach in the Army. And he did kill Mexicans.

Many innocent Mexicans. From both sides of the border.

Oh, how much better this world would be if they handed us a pencil—or a book—and told us “Write, write, write!” Or “Read, read, read!”

Fat chance! For those in charge of creating the chaos that passes for order, books and pencils are more dangerous than assault weapons.

Books and pencils help to create an informed and world-conscious population. That discovery might lead to working class solidarity, or to the recognition, acceptance and loving of “the other” in us. That might cause the end of those in charge of the hatred that divides the people.

So, the masters tell us: “Down with education and up with militarization of the minds! Down with solidarity and up with separation!”

A sickness called racism is alive and well in this nation. A dangerously uninformed (or unengaged) population suffers from that malady.

We need to cure that sickness.

We need to eradicate it from our souls. No vaccine will do the job. It is a personal struggle, one that must take place. For ALL to survive.

Black leaders, such as the recently deceased Nobel Prize Winner writer Toni Morrison have warned us about racism. In “Song of Solomon,” she wrote: “You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.”

If we do accept the task ahead, a task to find what unites us, instead of what separates us, we might eventually be able to close our eyes on a sunny beach and enjoy the sun, the children laughter, each other, without the fear of an impending attack by some person who never learned to love himself.

Only then, love will not be interrupted.

magínese un día bonito. Uno que invita a salir y gozar del cálido sol en un verano que casi termina. Tal vez tirarse al agua, o simplemente acostarse en una playa, ojos cerrados, escuchando el batir de las olas y el graznido de las gaviotas sobrevolando.

También se escuchan, por doquier, risas infantiles de niños y niñas morenos. Tal vez latinos, tal vez indios, que utilizando pedazos

de maderas construyen castillos de arena, que también han llegado a descansar en la playa y adornan sus castillos con pedazos de conchas marinas o cadáveres de pequeños animales marinos, una pata de cangrejo, una pluma o un pedazo de vidrio redondeado y suavizado por las olas.

A pocos metros, una pareja de pescadores asiáticos buscan tener suerte. Más allá, una joven pareja de distintas razas se toman de las manos. Ella parece ser asiática americana, él europeo americano. Según las odiosas distinciones normalizadas en nuestro país.

Padres y madres mantienen un ojo pegado en sus criaturas. “¡Ashish! ¡No te metas al agua!” “¡Roberto! ¡No le tires arena a la Espi!”

Los niños obedecen y controlan sus inocentes diabluras. Los adultos se relajan y vuelven a gozar del día, compartiendo una merienda, tal vez un chiste bien contado o una cuita, una cuita que tal vez desaparezca por el encanto de lo bello del entorno. Si no desaparece, este día de sol la hará disminuir.

De pronto, un joven blanco, cercano a los 20 años, viene corriendo hacia donde se agrupan las familias. Se ve agitado y carga una gran mochila. El ambiente cambia de un golpe y una sensación de alerta llena el espacio.

Una alerta hecha necesidad por unos crueles y recientes sucesos. ¿Por qué corre ese joven hacia la gente en la playa? ¿Qué trae en esa mochila? “¡Roberto! ¡Ashish! ¡Esperanza! ¡Vengan!” Las familias, preocupadas, se agrupan alrededor de los adultos. El joven de la mochila se detiene a un par de metros del grupo, recobrando el aire.

Pausa por un par de segundos y luego habla: “Disculpen. ¿Acaso olvidé mi abrigo por acá? ¿Alguien lo ha visto?” Otra breve pausa. Después, una de las madres contesta: “¡Sí! ¡Yo lo encontré! Iba a darlo al guardia de la entrada”.

Después, ella recoje un abrigo, que estaba cuidadosamente doblado en la arena y lo entre-

ga al joven. Él deja escapar un gran suspiro de alivio, recibe la prenda de ropa que le entrega la mujer y después sonríe, mientras la mete en la mochila. “¡Gracias! ¡Mi mamá me mata si lo pierdo! ¡Ella acaba de regalármelo!” Y se va.

La calma retorna a la playa. Por todas partes, la gente comparte miradas y sonrisas de una extraña complicidad, con caras de alivio, pero reconociendo —sin palabras— una gran incomodidad recién compartida, incluso sintiendo una especie de rara vergüenza: ¡habían estereotipado racialmente a un inocente muchacho! ¡Una triste pena!

Fue un momento de confianza destruida.

Una sensación de temor que todos quisieran olvidar… aunque por dentro supieran que reaccionarían de la misma manera si la situación se repitiera. Hasta que surja la evidencia de que esa enfermedad llamada racismo se ha ido de este país.

Hoy mismo, seguimos afectados por terribles sucesos acaecidos hace pocos días, cuando miles de personas gozaban del sol, de la música y de las distintas comidas con sabor de ajo, en una feria en Gilroy, California. O que también sucedieron cuando miles de personas llenaban las tiendas de un ‘mall’ en El Paso, Texas, gozando las ofertas especiales de ‘vuelta a la escuela’. Y lo malo culminó en Dayton, Ohio, cuando otros se relajaban, casi de madrugada, tomando tragos y escuchando música. Todo sucedió en menos de dos días.

En los tres casos, tres jóvenes blancos, sin aparente relación entre ellos, atacaron esos eventos. Por lo menos dos de ellos con la clara intención de matar gente de color. “Quería matar mexicanos”, dijo el asesino de El Paso.

Así, manejó por horas, de un lado de Texas al otro, armado con su estúpidamente legal rifle tipo AK47, un arma diseñada solo para ‘¡matar, matar, matar!’ como enseñan en el ejército.

Y el amargado mató a muchos mexicanos.

De ambos lados de la frontera.

¡Oh! ¡Cuanto mejor fuera este mundo si se nos entregaran lápices —o libros— y se nos dijera “¡Escriban, escriban, escriban!” O “¡Lean, lean, lean!”

Eso no va a pasar. Para los que están a cargo de crear el caos, los libros y los lápices son más peligrosos que las armas mortíferas. Los libros y los lápices ayudan a crear poblaciones bien informadas y conscientes del mundo entero. Esa nueva conciencia puede llevarles a experimentar solidaridad con diversas clases trabajadoras, o aprender a reconocer, aceptar e incluso amar ‘al otro’ en nosotros. ¡Eso tal vez sería el fin de aquellos a cargo de atizar el odio que divide a nuestra gente! Entonces, los amos dicen: “¡Abajo con la educación y arriba con la militarización de las mentes! ¡Abajo con la solidaridad y arriba la separación entre los pueblos!”

Una enfermedad llamada racismo sigue viva y saludable en esta nación. Una población peligrosamente mal informada (o desconectada) sufre de esa enfermedad. Necesitamos curar esa enfermedad. Debemos erradicarla de nuestras almas. No hay vacuna para eso. Es una lucha personal, que debe suceder. Si queremos —todos— sobrevivir.

Los líderes negros de este país, como la recientemente fallecida Toni Morrison, Premio Nobel de Literatura, nos han advertido respecto al racismo. En Canción de Salomón ella escribió: “¿Quieren volar? Entonces, deben abandonar esa mierda que les tiene anclados!”

Si aceptamos la tarea necesaria, la tarea de descubrir lo que nos une, en vez de lo que nos separa, tal vez eventualmente podamos volar, o cerrar nuestros ojos en una playa iluminada y gozar del sol, de las risas infantiles, de gozar los unos con las otras, sin el miedo a ser atacados por alguien que nunca supo amarse.

Solo entonces, el amor no será interrumpido.

A friend and I passed by the scene when police officers began to arrive. We had just left an event (calling the community to action to stop family separation and the caging of children.) There was some back and forth between the youth and the men as officers began investigating. One of the men yelled out, “I want to press charges, she’s a menace to society.” When my friend and I challenged such a ferocious verbal attack by an adult male stranger of a young Latina, we became the next target. As the man proceeded to swiftly call us vulgar names, an officer approached us and directed us not to instigate. Luckily, he wasn’t threatening or rude, so we agreed to stay quiet. On the heels of our agreeable response, the officer asked if we would leave. We politely declined to give up our legal

La otra noche en la Misión, vi cómo llegaron nueve policías para atender el caso de una joven latina intoxicada. Previamente había causado un altercado en un restaurante y luego dos comensales blancos de mediana edad la siguieron con la intención de castigarla. Los hombres se encargaron de perseguir a quien, reconoció haberse portado mal. Según los testigos, estos hombres estaban cenando y bebiendo en el restaurante, pero no estuvieron directamente involucrados en el incidente inicial. Salieron del restaurante poco después que la joven. Un joven latino cruzaba la calle mientras la chica huía de los hombres. Se quedó para poder decirle a la policía lo que vio: la joven trató de escapar mientras los hombres la seguían e instigaban.

Un amigo y yo íbamos pasamos por la escena cuando los policías comenzaron a llegar. Acabábamos de salir de un evento (llamando a la comunidad a la acción para detener la separación familiar y el confinamiento de niños). Hubo algunos intercambios entre los dos jóvenes y los hombres blancos mientras los oficiales hacían sus indagaciones. Uno de los hombres gritó: “Quiero presentar cargos, es una amenaza para la sociedad”. Cuando mi amiga y yo desafiamos un ataque verbal tan feroz hacia una joven latina, nos

Beto O’Rourke, an El Paso native and former representative, blamed Trump’s rhetoric for the terrorization of his hometown.

Trump denounced white supremacy after the attacks, a first since becoming president, but was met with protests in both Dayton and El Paso. Attempting to deflect criticism, Trump blamed violent video games and hinted at possible gun reform.

Sadly, the treatment of this young person fails to surprise me given the treatment of Black and Brown children in public education, in the prison industrial complex, and given the current caging of migrant children.

National TPS Alliance, faith and community leaders sponsored the vigil and news conference. Cristina Morales, 38, came to the U.S. from El Salvador when she was 12 years old. Currently, she, a special education teacher assistant, and her daughter filed a lawsuit to fight the action against her TPS revocation. As a member of National TPS Alliance, she came out in support of her community and described her struggle to maintain protection from deportation.

“I believe in unity,” Morales said. “If we unite we can change, we can prevent deaths, we can prevent a person from growing up with the power to harm communities.”

What of these men who also behaved badly? What of so many techies and visitors who stumble drunk down Mission streets after a night out? These white men followed a youth, taunted her, called us names, demonstrated public intoxication, but only the Latinas in the situation were corrected or removed.

I arrived on this scene feeling overwhelmed by the abom-

inable crisis of the camps, by the nightmare of so many mass shootings. I arrived there trying to hold a slippery hope in my hands as I had just read poetry with my two sons backing me up with art and music. The severity of the response to this Latinx youth who didn’t resist or even say very much, kept saying she wanted to go home, felt like the universe just piling on. The cooperating systems that put the Exonerated Five in prison, allow the caging of children, murdered Alex Nieto and too many others here in the Mission foster a society where policie and mass shootings are normalized, and make Latinx and people of color, afraid, first and foremost, for our children. I continually wonder about the shift that occurs when an adult, be it an entitled consumer or a culturally incompetent teacher, responds to children’s behaviour by erasing their humanity. That is the ultimate menace––the stripping of our humanity; our right to dignity and humanity trumped by the privilege and entitlement of those in power. I, nonetheless, will continue to demand dignity for all our children. I will continue to insist that they are free.

Hong Mei Pang is the Director of Advocacy at the Chinese for Affirmative Action in San Francisco and has been working directly with hard-to-count communities to ensure they have “equitable access and that they are able to understand the significance of the census as it relates to our fair share of resources to political representation.”

“On the one hand, it’s really about these resources that make this census real on a day-to-day basis,” said Pang. “Especially for these hard-tocount communities who experience a lot of economic social and political disenfranchising and inequity.”

Indiginous groups among other hard-to-count communities rely on

state-funded programs for education, housing and social services. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds the Office of Native American Programs, which includes a total of seven different housing programs.

According to a HUD study released in 2017, its housing is overcrowded and below standards to the average U.S. household. The study concluded that in a two-year period, HUD would need to build 68,000 new units to eliminate overcrowding and replace below-standard housing units.

Funding for housing programs like HUD that contribute to Indigenous populations are directly impacted by the U.S. Census, which requires accurate representation in order to receive necessary funding.

U.S. Census Partnership Coordinator, Jessica Imotichey, leads the tribal partnership in the Los Angeles region. According to Imotichey, the program for the U.S. Census has hired a tribal specialist and Native

Currently, the Mam community (Indigenous Mayan people from Guatemala) in the East Bay is a group that is not being accurately counted because the U.S. Census has very little information on them.

Henry Sales, Mam community leader and translator, is one of three Mam translators in the United States.

Although there is very limited information about this Indiginous group, Sales is making efforts to educate the Mam community on the importance

However, there is still very little that is known about the Indigenous communities that have been growing over the years.

“They would call us Latinos because some of us did speak some Spanish,” Sales said. “But now within the past five years, the Mam population has grown and a lot of us are now realizing who we are and we are Indiginous and Mayan people, and we want to be represented as Indiginous.”

When El Tecolote ran a feature on the Mam community in late 2018, there were an estimated 10,000 Mam living in the East Bay, the majority them in East Oakland. With an accurate 2020 Census, we may finally know the true number.
