SUMMER DESTINATIONS
from Ekbladet 02/22
by Ekbladet
Another year of studies lie behind us and, for some, even the entire university experience is now complete. To those of you whom have graduated this spring – including many of my friends with which I share many special memories of the first years here in Umeå – I congratulate you and wish you the best of luck in the future. As we all set out for the summer ahead, I thought I would share some locations in Sweden that I think are worth a visit.
Fulufjället national park

Waterfalls, primeval forests, and colourful lichens. These words might be the best description of one of Sweden’s hidden gems. The Swedish mountains are known for their winter looks and ski slopes, covered in a white sheet that stretches across the horizon. It’s a picturesque view, however, the summer season is often overlooked. The Swedish summers bring greenery and life to these primeval regions. For the adventurous amongst you, this is the perfect summer getaway if you want to hike and experience the Swedish nature at its best. It is relatively close to Sälen, so accommodation should be hard to find, if you do not prefer to pitch a tent. If you go to Naturum you have the change to take the trail to Njupeskär, and if you dare to go of the beaten path, you might even find the oldest tree in the world, Old Tjikko, which is nearly 10,000 years old.
Öland
Probably the bast place, in the world. Yes, I am biased, I have basically grown up there having spent at least some time every summer there. It is close to my heart, but oh my is it beautiful. Öland is a place that can suit everyone, from those who want to experience beautiful nature from open fields to old primeval forests to those who want to visit sandy beaches with open ocean. There is a also a nice selection of fine dining, with Elise in Djupvik being a hidden gem when it comes to food. For the history geeks the opportunity to visit Borgholm Castle should provide you with a fun day of activities. If you want to travel across Öland, there are many old windmills scattered across the island to see, and the lighthouses on both the north and south side of Öland are a spectacle on their own. When visiting the northern lighthouse, Långe Erik, don’t forget to visit the trails in Trollskogen, a primeval forest with many hidden beauties and signs of viking activity. For the golfers Öland has many beautiful golf courses, including Öland GK which is where I first learned to play.
Stockholm

Yes, I know… A person from Stockholm telling others to go to Stockholm. I know how it sounds. However, I truly to believe that Stockholm is a capital unique in its kind with both the archipelago and old architecture, it is a truly beautiful city with many tourists coming from all corners of the world. Even if you do not like Stockholm or the people in it, it is worth a visit. I am pointing out the old town here in particular as it is a unique part of the city with its historical layout and architecture. The narrow cobblestone streets mean that most streets are pedestrian streets only, and there is a cosy feel to the place when walking around there. It also provides some cool photography opportunities or selfie spots for the Instagram feeds. And, if you have the time, take the time to experience the archipelago too.
Gothenburg
In an attempt to save my life from the previous tips, I also have to highlight the west coast, or “Bästkusten” as some like to call it. It is not just because Jakob Heuts is form here and would kill me otherwise, but as it is an amazing place what everyone should visit. First of all, there is Gothenburg and its marina, you also have “avenyn” and Liseberg. But I urge you to seek further out than just Gothenburg, go to Tjörn, Lysekil, and the small fishing towns north of Gothenburg and see the rocky coasts and picturesque fishing villages that the west coast have to offer, you will not regret it.
My best tip
But the best tip I have, is to travel with your friends and together experience what Sweden has to offer. You will be sure to forge memories and bonds for life.
