Reading to Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children has a significant positive effect on their:

*Reading skills *Language skills *Social/Emotional Skills *Understanding of different topics and people *Concentration *Imagination and creativity *Empathy skills *Bond between parent and child

Reading to young children can consist of talking through the book illustrations, reading only one sentence on each page, or reading the story as it is written. It is okay to adjust the story based on your child’s age and developmental level. Reading should be an enjoyable time together!

In addition, it is okay to read the same story over and over. This allows a child to deepen his/her understanding of the story, predict what will happen next, memorize parts of the story, and feel satisfaction with the familiarity of the story. Although you may get tired of the same story, your child is learning so many skills from the repeated reading!

The Everman Library is a great resource for books for young children. They are open five days a week and all you need to get a free library card is to simply bring your photo ID with proof of your current address. They are located at 100 N. E. RAY ELEMENTARY

by Tami Terry Thanks to everyone who came out and joined us for our HISPANIC HERITAGE PROGRAM on October 18. We had a great turn out and the kids did a fantastic job performing. Way to go third grade! Also, thank you to all who participated in BULLDOGS FOR THE CURE. This year 770 shirts were sold, raising over $5000.00 for Breast Cancer Research – and bringing the EISD total to just over $60,000 over the past ten years. Way to go Bulldogs!

BINGO FOR BOOKS

Join us in the cafeteria on Thursday, November 8, 2018, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM for our annual Bingo for Books. PTO will be serving a light dinner, and then all children attending will be able to play bingo to win books to take home with them!

Be sure to come and take part in the fun, and take home a new book to read!

COLLEGE T-SHIRT DAY

November 9, 2018, is College T-Shirt Day. Represent by wearing a T-shirt from your favorite college or university. E. Ray students may wear jeans on this day if they are wearing a College T-shirt.

VETERANS’ DAY

Serving in our nation’s military is a true sacrifice for the men and women who daily put their lives on the line, spend time away from their families, and protect our nation. Veterans’ Day is Monday, November 12, 2018. Please join us celebrating the veterans on our campus – Mrs. Sanchez and Mr. Ross – and thank the veterans in your family and neighborhood for the sacrifices they have made.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Scholastic Book Fair will be on our campus November 12 through 16, 2018. Students are permitted to shop before school and at scheduled times with their classes throughout the day. Parents are welcome to come and shop, just check in at the front office. In addition, you can shop online by going to www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/findafair and searching for Everman.

FEASTING WITH FAMILIES

We will be having Feasting with Family days the week of November 12 through 16, 2018, with an invitation to specific family members on certain days. Be watching for a flyer to come home with more information regarding the events for each day.

THANKSGIVING HOLIDAYS Just a reminder that we will be out the full week of November 19-23, 2018 for Thanksgiving. Please have a happy holiday, and be safe if you are traveling during that time.

HOMMEL ELEMENTARY

by Abigail Ferry Hommel 2018 Student Council Elections The week prior to student council elections at Hommel, the upstairs third and fourth grade hallways were filled with posters for hopeful student council members. Daily reminders on the announcements for hopeful candidates were made about placing a vote with your heart and mind and having students reflect on who would be the best person for the position. Kristian Lugo, a third grade student said “I can’t run for a position but I will vote!”

On September 13th, students in third and fourth grade had the opportunity to place a vote for student council members in their grade levels. Mrs. Hall set up privacy shields as though they were voting booths for students to emulate a true voting experience.

Winners were announced the following day and our initiation ceremony took place on Oct. 1st in the Hommel library. Families and staff members gathered to watch students accept their new positions and celebrate afterwards.

Our theme for Career Day this year was “I Am What I See. All that I am, or hope to be, I may never know, unless you show me”. Career Day included over 25 presenters from a variety of careers including engineers and a professional boxer. Students experienced simulations, participated in hands-on activities, and just overall learned about the different career opportunities that they can take.

Everman ISD Leaders Complete Texas Sustainable Schools Institute

EVERMAN, TEXAS – Leaders from Everman ISD have completed the Texas Sustainable Schools Institute (TSSI), the first of its kind program in Texas designed to equip, inspire, and support school transformation leaders.

The purpose of TSSI was to guide school transformation teams through the creation of a sustainable schools framework. The five-month program brought together 18 fellows from six Texas school districts. Fellows gained inspiration from national sustainability experts, school leaders, and technical partners.

“TSSI provided our district the opportunity to collaborate with school transformation leaders across the state of Texas and country” said Dr. Curtis Amos, Superintendent. “We were able to work as a team to build a sustainability plan aimed at improving student outcomes.”

Programming included three in-person convenings which took place in Dallas and Austin, and several virtual-based workshops. Throughout the institute, each campus team developed a customized and detailed Sustainability Master Plan for their campus.

The Texas Sustainable Schools Institute was organized by Benecras, a Texas-based organization helping K12 schools measure, manage, and improve sustainability performance. Programming partners also included the Green Schools National Network and EcoRise.
