City Ci ty NNeews “Hot Desert, Cold Cases” Seeks Info in Unsolved Valley Homicides the remainder of your life,” Petersen says. “How do you do that?”

By Jenna-Lee Neff ONE OF THE FEW CRIMES WITHOUT A STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS IS A HOMICIDE. But time proves to be the enemy in many investigations, leading to a growing queue of cold cases. A new initiative by the Phoenix Police Department seeks to bring those cases back to the spotlight. “We want the community to understand that a homicide is never closed until it is solved,” explains Phoenix Police Sergeant Tommy Thompson. “Until that happens, the victims and their loved ones won’t have peace.” “Hot Desert, Cold Cases” brings cases handled by the Phoenix Police Cold Case Homicide Unit back to the community eye through short, informational episodes designed to jog the memory of viewers for potential leads. These videos and accompanying case information are also being shared on the department’s other social media profiles. “Getting attention out about the cases is important,” Thompson shares. “There may be witnesses who obtained information first, second, third or even forth hand. Someone may have heard someone talking about someone who heard someone talking.” Thompson shares that the department recently solved a cold case from 1978, and while victims’ families, former officers, and detectives on the case may have passed away, it is still important to try to put these cases to rest. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are spending more time at home, giving crime enthusiasts and even the general community the opportunity to dig in on older cases with fresh eyes. Thompson encourages people to not only look at “Hot Deserts, Cold Cases” but to also visit the Silent Witness website to view other cases. “I can envision people at home becoming super sleuths to try and solve the cases,” he says. “…Despite our myhyperlocalnews.com

There are two persons of interest in the case – Ricardo Sanchez-Molinares, also known as Butcho, and Fermin Gomez, also known as Mini. Both were mentioned in interviews pertaining to the case, and it is suspected that they traveled to Mexico after the murder.

best efforts, it is very difficult to solve a homicide without the community. We need their help.” Getting information out about the cases not only help solve the crime but also lets the victims’ loved ones know that the case has not been forgotten. “We want the families of the victims to know we never give up on the cases involving their loved ones,” Thompson says. The first case featured in the initiative is the murder of Lynsey Chainhalt on June 13, 2003. The 20-year-old was the designated driver, taking herself and three friends home after attending a party in the East Valley.

been followed by Phoenix police, but none have provided a break in the case. “Even though I’ve been retired 3.5 years, I still think about this case,” Schira says. “Especially on the anniversary dates.” Chainhalt’s mother, Judi Petersen, describes her as smart, determined, a tried-and-true friend with a great heart. She hopes that even though years have passed, someone will come forward with information to finally bring peace to the case. “I just don’t know how, if you had any knowledge of something like this, something so brutal, four people, four kids… how you could keep that in for

Chainhalt’s case has been featured several times in the Valley in recent years in attempts to get justice for Chainhalt’s family and her friends in the car that night. “She was worthy, she deserved a chance in life,” Petersen says. “She would have done good things.” Readers can keep up on the latest “Hot Desert, Cold Cases” episodes by following the Phoenix Police YouTube channel. If readers have any information regarding Lynsey Chainhalt or any other cold cases featured in the initiative, they are urged to contact Silent Witness at 480-Witness or leave an anonymous tip on the Silent Witness website, silentwitness.org. Tips are kept anonymous and there is potential for a cash reward.

Retired Phoenix Police Detective William Schira, who spent the final 8.5 years of his career on the case, explained the events of the evening. “As they were going northbound on I-17, somebody in a dark-colored Tahoe or Blazer threw a beer bottle at them,” he says. The suspect’s car then followed Chainhalt to the area of 20th Street and Grovers where three Hispanic men got out and fired 19 rounds into the car, killing Chainhalt and injuring her friends. Suspects fled the scene and, aside from the other passengers in Chainhalt’s car, there are no known witnesses. Her friends were unable to identify the shooters and numerous leads have NORTH TATUM TIMES • August • 5

that may or may not be suitable for your particular circumstances. Rather than paying down the mortgage monthly, redirect the extra principal payment to a savings vehicle. We refer to this as building a sinking fund. If history prevails, the rate of return on an investment may allow the growth of the sinking fund to eventually equal the amount of debt on the home (as your continued monthly payments chips away at the debt balance). The flexibility of having the funds to provide income during retirement or payoff the mortgage may allow you to make decisions suited for your personal situation in whatever scenario you may find presented to you in the future. The pandemic of 2020 has clearly revealed that lending practices can adjust quickly, reducing or even eliminating your ability to refinance or obtain a mortgage when you most need it. Having the flexibility to choose your path when much is out of our control may provide the comfort you are seeking in the feeling of a debt-free home. As you age and fewer options may be available to you during economic turmoil, having a portfolio to generate income to help meet your needs may make greater sense than having a debt-free home. We encounter this thought regularly. In working with our clients, we help them evaluate ways to efficiently manage debt and investments to help meet their needs. he dream for many homeowners is to be mortgage free entering retirement. Perhaps this is rooted in our upbringing from parents growing up in an era that coveted debt-free living. Have things changed? Yes, and the biggest one is that we are living longer and feeling the effects of compounding inflation. That means that your cost of living may triple during your retirement years. A home does not generate a level of income to pay these expenses. Will your investments keep pace? The heart string tug at owning our homes can be powerful. So powerful that we may be hyper focused on paying down the mortgage and lose track of building assets that will recreate a “paycheck” during retirement to put food on the table in our paid for home. You may feel a sense of control having no home debt, but you may be giving up control by losing flexibility during economic changes. A debt-free home provides a sense of security for a place to live out our remaining years. The silent generation (the generation before baby boomers) learned the hard lessons of the great depression from their parents and grandparents and have instilled the importance of debt-free living. However, the level of guaranteed income has decreased in years with more organizations shifting from pensions to defined contribution plans. In addition, life expectancy has increased. More responsibility has shifted to you to manage your financial future than ever before – a future that seems to grow longer with every passing year of increased healthcare advances. Creating the flexibility for continued quality of life has never been more challenging. With mortgage rates being historically low it may make sense to look more closely at your ability to maintain your quality of life throughout your lifetime and have flexibility as you live Ameriprise Financial, Inc. and its affiliates do not offer tax or legal advice. your retirement years. Legal Asset Protection for Your Heirs he revocable living trust is a great estate-planning tool, but it does not protect your assets from your creditors. The assets in your trust are still considered your assets because you continue to have complete control over them. On the other hand, you can use your trust to provide asset protection for your beneficiaries after your death.

an outright gift of the inheritance can result in a beneficiary’s creditors snatching all your hard-earned money, leaving the money in trust provides asset protection for the trust assets. A real-life example was a son who had filed bankruptcy. Shortly after filing, his mom died, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It was all his. Except it wasn’t his. Instead, because he had filed bankruptcy, it all went to his bankruptcy trustee.

Instead of giving your heirs the inheritance outright, to put it in their own name, at death, your trust directs those assets into an irrevocable trust for each beneficiary.

Had mom given him the assets in trust, he could have completed the bankruptcy and had the assets in the trust to give him a fresh start after bankruptcy.

TRUSTS CAN KEEP AN INHERITANCE OUT OF THE HANDS OF CREDITORS These trusts do provide asset protection for the trust assets. Where

eficiaries at your death, we provide protection from beneficiaries who might not manage the inheritance well, such as a child (or the child’s spouse) who is a spendthrift, or an heir with drug, gambling or other addiction issues. The trust allows for discretionary distributions to the heirs, but prevents them from having unlimited access to spend however he pleases. TRUSTS CAN PROTECT THE INHERITANCE IN CASE OF YOUR BENEFICIARY’S DIVORCE OR DEATH If a beneficiary is divorcing, or has a rocky marriage, leaving the inheritance in trust can assure that your beneficiary keeps your money and doesn’t lose part of it in a divorce. The assets held in trust won’t be divided up, because the inherited trust is separate property, belonging only to the beneficiary and not her spouse.

An outright distribution of the inheritance, however, is likely to be commingled in accounts held by both the beneficiary and his spouse. The assets then may be considered community property and some portion will go to the divorcing spouse. THE ARIZONA ADVANTAGE FOR THE RESPONSIBLE HEIR In Arizona, the law permits a beneficiary to be trustee of his or her own trust and still have some of the protections we’ve discussed. The beneficiary has control over the trust assets, and divorce and creditor protections. That’s an advantage you should take advantage of. If you don’t have a revocable living trust, or need an update, give us a call at 602-375-6752 for your free initial consultation via Zoom, FaceTime or phone.

Art, Culture, and Science for Kids By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

A

s parents and caregivers, we are constantly looking for opportunities to help our children grow and learn in creative, innovative ways. This is especially true these days while kids are largely stuck at home during the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fostering a love of art, creativity, and scientific exploration is a great way to keep your youngsters thinking and growing mentally, socially, intellectually, and emotionally. No matter how you encourage your children to express themselves and their interests, the act of creating and learning will help your child grow and develop. Fortunately for us, Arizona is home to some of the most unique sights to see and places to visit in the world. Most of the local museums are temporarily closed, but if you want to get the kids out of the house for a while and do something fun and educational, we found a few local venues that are open to the public right now. Be sure to call ahead or check them out online before you go, but these businesses are currently welcoming visitors, so put on your masks and give them your support. HEARD MUSEUM heard.org Founded in 1929, the Heard is internationally recognized for the superior quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming, and unrivaled festivals. The museum has one of the largest and most outstanding collections of American Indian artwork in the country. It includes historic, cultural, and fine art collections of more than 3,600 pieces, and extensive documentation of the development of the American Indian Fine Art Movement, starting in the 20th century. The Heard is dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art. The museum presents stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective and exhibits that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary Native American art. The Heard Museum is a Phoenix treasure that provides visitors with a unique perspective of our cultural heritage in the myhyperlocalnews.com

Southwest. It’s a one-of-a-kind attraction and a must-see museum, welcoming visitors in difficult times to share in its wonders. DESERT CABALLEROS WESTERN MUSEUM westernmuseum.org Known as “Arizona’s Most Western Museum,” the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg is a state-of-the-art museum open to visitors year-round. The museum is less than an hour from most North Phoenix locations and displays a collection of more than 400 works of art about the American West by artists such as Frederick Remington, Charles Russell, and Joe Beeler. It also showcases historical exhibits depicting turn-of-the-century Wickenburg, and has special features for kids, like the “Out on the Ranch” exhibit. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is definitely worth visiting and a great day trip to get the family out and about while still keeping cool indoors during the summer. ODYSEA AQUARIUM odyseaaquarium.com The state of the art OdySea Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Southwest. It boasts two million gallons of water, 60 exhibits, and over 30,000 sea creatures, not to mention one of the best shark-watching restrooms in the Valley. It is best to buy your tickets online in advance, to check hours, get discounts, and avoid waiting in long lines. OdySea is worth the visit and a great place to get the kids out of the house and escape the heat. Each of these attractions provides you with an opportunity to have a change of scenery, while staying cool and continuing to encourage your kids’ interest in art, culture, science, and history unique to our area. If you’re low on funds, see if you can check out a Culture Pass at your local library for free admission for two at participating arts and cultural institutions (available first come, first served). Also, be sure to check Ladybug’s Blog at ladybugsblog.com for a more ideas for great places to get your kids out of the house to enjoy world-class arts and culture in the Valley of the Sun.

Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale Opens its Doors By Michelle Talsma Everson

W

hen you talk to Sherry Scott about her new venture, Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale, you can hear the excitement in her voice. This month, the state-of-the-art swimming facility dedicated to teaching children as young as four months to swim, opens its doors at the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center (7000 E. Mayo Boulevard). The school is the first Arizona-based franchise of the popular national chain and Scott, its owner and general manager, is excited to bring the concept to the Valley. “Instilling confidence in children is such a rewarding experience and we are grateful to have the opportunity to bring such an incredible and necessary business like Goldfish Swim School to the Scottsdale community,” Scott says. “Swimming is a lifesaving skill every child deserves to have access to and Goldfish Swim School has found a way to make it fun and memorable for children.”

At Goldfish, children ages four months to 12 years old sign up for weekly swim lessons. These lessons take place in an indoor, 90-degree pool, that is 70- by 25-feet and holds 8,700 square feet of water. Lessons are provided seven days a week, including evenings and weekends, and are ongoing throughout the year—meaning you don’t need to worry about your child having to relearn how to swim every summer. “Each school offers swim lessons and programs using a proprietary philosophy, The Science of SwimPlay, to build life skills both in and out of the water using play-based learning in a fun and safe environment,” according to Goldfish Swim Schools. “Each school’s number one focus and main priority is always the same – educating children on water safety while teaching them how to swim and respect the water.” Scott shares that Goldfish Swim School operates with busy families in mind. For example, she explains, parents and caregivers can download an app and, if they cannot make a class,

they can easily let Goldfish know with the click of a button. The school also allows multiple make up classes, doing its best to accommodate its customers. Another benefit of Goldfish Swim School to parents of little ones are its “Mommy and Me” style classes where caregivers can get in the water with their littlest swimmers. Scott shares that one unique perk is that, if a young swimmer is able to safely be in the water without a caregiver, then mom and dad don’t need to get in. In addition to highly qualified swim instructors, all of whom are background checked, the pool has a lifeguard on duty at all times whose sole job it is to watch the water. “Added to the lifeguard, every 30 days, our team will do an in-service training to learn how to handle different water emergencies,” Scott says. With COVID-19 at the top of everyone’s minds, Scott assures that Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale is taking all of the precautions necessary.

She notes that all swim instructors will have face shields, all swim lanes will be spaced properly apart, and only one parent or caregiver will be allowed in per student. Of course, all high touch surfaces will be sanitized multiple times per day. Scott’s journey to owning and managing a Goldfish Swim School location here in the Valley began in 2018. Entrepreneurship is nothing new to the long-time Scottsdale resident as she and her husband own Cute Smiles 4 Kids & Orthodontics, with 17 doctors and four locations in Arizona and Texas. “I’ve helped grow our dental practices from the ground up, so I am passionate about the health of children and the communities we do business in,” she says. “Goldfish Swim School is my ‘baby’ though and I am so excited to be a part of the franchise.” Scott shares that she is passionate about the brand because “Goldfish is so much more than just a swim school.”

She says the bright colors, friendly atmosphere, and details—even down to the changing rooms—are geared toward their young swimmers. The school perhaps puts it best: “You feel it the moment you walk in. Something different. It’s more than vibrant colors chosen to inspire kids. More than a curriculum crafted to not only teach kids to swim but also to build their character through guided play. More than a shiver-free pool heated to 90 degrees. There’s something more. Something unexpected. Something beyond typical. It’s passion. Not just a passion for kids or a passion for swimming; it’s a special passion for changing – even saving – lives by teaching kids to swim and be safer in and around the water.” Goldfish Swim School plans for the North Scottsdale location to be the first of many Arizona-based franchise locales. With 100 locations open and operating across North America and an additional 129 in development, Goldfish Swim School is continuing its rapid franchise development with eyes on Arizona, according to the company. “The positive business climate and communityfocused neighborhoods directly align with the supportive atmosphere of our schools – making the region an ideal expansion market for Goldfish Swim School,” says Dan Israel, vice president of franchising at Goldfish Swim School. In addition to its swim classes, Goldfish also offers

special events like birthday parties. “Members and their party will be able to have the entire pool to themselves, with plenty of room to space out and swim safely,” she explains. As the space grows, it will offer accelerated Jump Start Clinics and Goldfish Swim Force Team, catered to swimmers who have completed the Goldfish Pro Level. Since Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale is new to the area, Scott says she is offering several new member specials. For example, for those who pay a year in advance for a Charter Membership, they will receive credit for a free party and their child’s handprint on the wall. Those who pre-pay six months in advance for the Golden Membership will receive 50 percent off of a party. Scott invites curious families to come in once they open their doors on August 5 and take a look around the facility. They will also host community open houses; locals can find the event dates and times on Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale’s Facebook page @goldfishnorthscottsdale. “I’m so passionate about this brand and all it represents and brings to the community,” Scott shares. “I’m honored and excited to share Goldfish Swim School with local families.” To learn more, visit goldfishswimschool.com/northscottsdale or call 480-470-8231.

from California and Colorado. We’re also seeing a spike in demand of local buyers. Due to COVID-19, we’re seeing many buyers seek out homes that better fit their stay-at-home lifestyle. People want more home office space, play rooms, homework stations, and pools. Homes, now more than ever, need to suit potential buyers’ live, work and play needs. If you’re looking to sell, this is an ideal time to move because buyers are on the hunt. Food Dining Out Safely During COVID-19 By Molly Cerreta Smith

D

ining out provides much more than simple nourishment — it’s one of the most popular ways people in Arizona get together to socialize. Proof of that lies in the sheer amount of restaurants throughout the state, as well as local restaurant industry’s economic stats. Last year alone, the industry recorded yearly sales of $13.4 billion among its 10,354 establishments. While COVID-19 has certainly challenged the industry as a whole — and changed the way restaurants can operate — local food enthusiasts are still longing to dine out and support the industry that so desperately needs a boost right now. The Arizona Restaurant Association has provided some simple safety tips for patrons choosing in-restaurant dining. MASK UP: While everyone seems to have a stance on the “great mask debate,” the CDC has stated time and again that the virus is spread mostly “by respiratory droplets released when people talk, cough, or sneeze.” Wearing a mask is not only a smart choice, it’s now mandated by many Arizona cities and individual businesses, including restaurants. When entering a restaurant, mask up and ensure restaurant staff are masked too. Naturally, once seated, the masks can come off to eat and drink.

WASH UP: Prior to going to a restaurant and “eating in,” wash those hands (everyone’s heard the 20-second rule plenty of times by now, right?) and wash them again after eating. It’s that simple.

well-equipped with powerful misting systems to combat the heat and keep guests comfortable. When feasible, choosing outdoor seating is a smart choice, and in just a few short months, it will be a lot more tolerable!

LOOK AROUND: When choosing to dine in, guests can do some research about the steps and procedures their chosen restaurant has taken to ensure safety. And upon arrival, guests should be able to easily spot visible safety measures the restaurant is taking. For example - are staff wearing masks and gloves? Are tables spaced six feet apart and/or are there partitions between booths? Are there additional hand sanitizing stations for diners and employees? Other safety protocols to look for include single-use or newly sanitized menus; contactless menu viewing such as via menu boards or QR codes to scan then view on diners’ smartphones; sanitized or single-use condiments; and contactless payment options.

HANDS OFF: The CDC states that “the virus may spread to hands from a contaminated surface and then to the nose or mouth, causing infection.” So when dining out, it’s important to limit touching things (and especially important to avoid touching the face after touching a surface such as dining table, chair or hostess stand.) As a good rule of thumb, always wash or sanitize hands after coming in contact with anything or anyone.

OPT OUT: Governor Ducey has made it clear that being outdoors or in open spaces is a safer choice then dining in. But even Zonies that love the heat may find that a little hard to handle in the dead of summer. The good news is many local restaurants that feature large patios are already

STEP BACK: Following the six-foot rule is another essential safety practice when dining out. Avoid restaurants where crowds of people might be gathered as they wait for a table. Choosing to stand outside and away from groups while waiting for a table is another simple safety measure diners can take. PARTY OF EIGHT (OR FEWER): Speaking of groups, another way to limit exposure or spread of the virus is to reduce the number of people guests come in contact with when dining out. When possible, keep group dining to a

minimum. Adhering to governmental guidelines, many restaurants may even limit the number of diners per table or group to eight or fewer. COVID-19 has changed the way the world operates in nearly every way — but it doesn’t have to stop food enthusiasts from enjoying a great meal out. With some due diligence and a little extra attention paid to safety guidelines, locals can still “dine in” at their favorite restaurants and indulge in the social pleasure of eating out with family, friends and loved ones — just maybe not all of them at once.

Visiting NATIONAL MONUMENTS IN ARIZONA

By Jill Frier

A

rizona is known for its abundant natural beauty and majestic scenery. Many of our fantastic natural resources and awe-inspiring historical sights are specially preserved for the public as National Monuments. While National Parks are created through acts of Congress and must be large enough for broad recreational and educational use by the public, National Monuments are created by presidential declaration and have historic, prehistoric, or scientific interest.

MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL MONUMENT, CAMP VERDE

TUZIGOOT NATIONAL MONUMENT, CLARKDALE Another fascinating example of the history of desert people in the Southwest is Tuzigoot National Monument. Visitors cannot only see the ruins of an ancient village built by the Sinagua people, they can walk through the rooms and touch the walls of the structure. The monument is north of Phoenix just outside Cottonwood, nestled at the foot of the mountain near Jerome. Tuzigoot is a fantastic day trip for sightseeing and a definite stop if you are planning to visit the Verde Valley.

There are officially 22 National Park Service units in Arizona, visited by nearly 12 million people and bringing in around $1 billion in economic impact annually. Thirteen of these areas are designated as National Monuments, and many of our favorite sites are just a short drive from the Valley of the Sun. CASA GRANDE RUINS NATIONAL MONUMENT, COOLIDGE

Just south of Chandler on the way to Tucson, you will find one of the largest freestanding prehistoric structures built in North America. Although its original purpose remains a mystery, this site is culturally and scientifically significant. It may have been gathering place, a community, or a waypoint marker for an extensive system of canals and trade routes. Regardless of its original purpose, the majestic “Great House” at Casa Grande Ruins is a well-preserved piece of Sonoran Desert history and a must see National Monument in Arizona. 22 • August 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

the Sonoran Desert and Roosevelt Lake are worth the journey.

If you want to head north of the Valley of the Sun, Montezuma Castle National Monument is an easy stop off Highway I-17 near Camp Verde. One of the best-preserved and most easily accessible cliff dwellings in North America, this is a beautiful place to stop on the road between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Take a break or have a picnic and enjoy the shady trees near the Verde River while taking in a breathtaking piece of Southwestern history. TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT, ROOSEVELT East of the Valley and nestled in the cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake, the Tonto National Monument allows visitors to hike up hilly terrain and view ancient Salado-style cliff dwellings in the pristine setting of the Tonto National Forest. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is open to the public year-round, accessible by a paved but steep path up the mountain. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is only accessible by a 3-4 hour guided tour, so plan to book your visit in advance. This National Monument is a bit off the beaten path, but its historic significance and the breath-taking views of

WALNUT CANYON NATIONAL MONUMENT, FLAGSTAFF Just south of I-40 outside of Flagstaff, Walnut Canyon National Monument is a scenic and historic place to visit in the tall pines of Northern Arizona. Take a hike among the ruins and cliff dwellings in the upper elevations on both easy rim trails and more difficult trails down into the canyon. This National Monument allows visitors to walk along canyon walls and through the actual pueblos of prehistoric desert inhabitants. It’s an amazing site to stop and enjoy between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Each of the National Monuments in Arizona is a special place to visit. All have important historical significance and provide breathtaking views of Arizona’s scenic natural landscape. To find these and other Arizona National Monuments, visit nps. gov. The next time you want to get out of Phoenix for a day or weekend trip or are seeking an outdoor adventure in the Grand Canyon State, consider visiting one or more of these National Monuments.
