Be Patriotic by Going Solar

Because of scheduling issues that we don’t need to get into, we weren’t able to run our usual column for the July issue. That’s unfortunate since the Fourth of July would have been the perfect occasion to express the patriotic feelings that come so naturally to us as we muse about the green-energy transition, an often-dry topic that nonetheless touches on themes of national solidarity and purpose.

But, what the heck—September is as fine a month as any to talk about what solar power and patriotism have to do with each other. (An Arizona September is hotter than July in most other states, anyway). so here goes, our Fourth of July column (edited to reflect the passing of time):

The Fourth of July came and went again this year. It was an occasion to celebrate the history and traditions that tie us together as fellow citizens.

But doing so might have been hard for some folks. With so much anxiety and cynicism in the air nowadays, patriotism has to compete with less sunny emotions about the country’s present and future, leaving some Americans unsure of how to celebrate the nation’s birthday in a way that feels true to how they’re feeling.

The root of the problem could be a lack of active engagement. Love of country, like love of anything else, is not just something you feel; it’s something you do. The blessings that we celebrate every year didn’t materialize out of nowhere. They came from concrete actions performed by patriots who were committed to

practicing the love they felt for their country by solving its problems. As their descendants, it’s incumbent on us to follow in their footsteps by solving the problems of our own time.

With that in mind, going solar is an excellent way to put your patriotism into practice. Don’t see the connection? Let us explain.

As we noted, loving one’s country means actively working to make it better. But that’s hard to do amid a pessimistic political climate in which citizens don’t trust one another. Multiple public-opinion polls show many Americans doubting the good intentions of fellow citizens on the opposite side of the political spectrum. How do you engage in helpful actions when the most effective actions—organized, large-scale ones—are stymied by widespread distrust?

In such a climate, small-scale but visible actions might be more effective than attempts to create large-scale change through political organizing. “Seeing is believing,” as the old saying goes. If people can see positive changes happening because other members of their community are taking steps to create those changes, then it could become easier to believe other positive changes—perhaps even bigger ones—are also possible.

As a private decision with public visibility and impact, investing in rooftop solar for one’s home is, therefore, a perfect way to help break through the walls of mistrust and cynicism. People can see the solar panels in their neighborhoods and hear the notes of optimism in their neighbors’ voices as they explain why they decided to put them up. More civically

engaged members of a community can see their neighbors coming to public meetings to push for solar-friendly policies.

As a surefire way to ensure continued access to crucial natural resources, solar power can unite Americans of different persuasions around a common purpose. Americans agree that the wellbeing of the country depends on a stable climate and energy security. And they agree on the solution: three-quarters of Americans want the US to generate all its electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind.

Arizona, like other southwestern states, is particularly vulnerable to the consequences of drought, which scientists agree is worsened by the heating of the planet. The southwestern states that rely on the Colorado River for irrigation, tap water, and hydropower recently were forced to upend a century-old deal on water rights by agreeing to slash the amount of water that can flow to cities and farms.

In a situation like this, solar power means the power to survive. By capturing the sun’s energy, we can harness the very thing that, because of the greenhouse effect, is heating and drying our region of the country to unsustainable degrees and apply it toward solving the problem. What better way is there to love your country than to participate directly in the solution to one of its most pressing crises?

If you’re ready to achieve energy independence for your family—and help achieve it for your country—then call SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

City News Anthem's Market in the Park: A Celebration of Community and Local Business

Photos courtesy of Anthem Market in the Park

ANTHEM'S MARKET IN THE PARK RETURNS FRIDAY, SEPT. 8, TO ANTHEM COMMUNITY PARK, LOCATED AT 41703 N. GAVILAN PEAK PKWY.

The Market on 41st and The Spa on 41st are at the helm of this venture, both establishments under the purview of Manny Gonzales, a full-time mortician with a flair for fostering community ties.

The market's focus has evolved over the years. Initially offering a vast array of vendors, it's now focusing more on food trucks, anticipating roughly 10 of these mobile culinary delights for September. The rich history of the event has seen collaborations with over 100 food trucks in the past five years, introducing an eclectic mix of flavors to Anthem's residents.

However, it's the vendors that form the market's heartbeat. Regular presences such as the Tumbleweed Coffee Co., known for its unique 1950s truck and trailer setup, and Berry Delicious, purveyor of fresh juices, have become integral parts of the Market in the Park experience.

From its humble beginnings as a weekly gathering in front of The Spa on 41st, aimed at supporting local businesses during the pandemic, the market's trajectory has been one of growth and transformation. By January 2023, with the Spa expanding its footprint, a new home was needed. The transition to Anthem Community Park, facilitated by nearly a year of discussions with the Anthem Community Council (ACC), has given the market a fresh lease of life.

Starting with an initial roster of 30 to 40 vendors, the event has burgeoned to feature over 60, supplemented by an

increasing number of food trucks and coffee vendors.

The perfect blend of seasonal weather and a community keen on outdoor engagements has further boosted the market's

appeal. As it continues to be a hub of activity, especially with the onset of cooler days, there is anticipation in the air.

The Nixer Revolutionizes the Bar Scene with Non-Alcoholic Craft Cocktails

THE VALLEY HAS WELCOMED ITS NEWEST ENTRANT INTO THE THRIVING "SOBER CURIOUS" MOVEMENT: THE NIXER, PHOENIX'S PREMIER NON-ALCOHOLIC POP-UP BAR, IS MAKING WAVES BY OFFERING PATRONS INTRICATE COCKTAILS SANS THE SPIRITS.

Established to cater to the conscientious drinker, The Nixer eschews traditional mocktails and Shirley Temples for a sophisticated menu of craft beverages developed by expert 'nixologists.' These drinks are not just devoid of alcohol; they are infused with a medley of beneficial ingredients like adaptogens, nootropics, mushroom strains, and CBD, ensuring patrons get more than just a refreshing sip.

The pop-up bar, ingeniously fashioned from a repurposed horse/utility trailer, is an embodiment of a growing trend. As many individuals, spanning all age groups, increasingly reevaluate their relationship with alcohol, The Nixer positions itself at the forefront of this movement in Phoenix. The bar's presence is notable at various events, markets, and dry “happy hours” around the city, delivering an alcohol-free, high-quality beverage experience.

Beyond its regular appearances, The Nixer offers its services for private and corporate events, tailoring its offerings to the specific ambiance and flavor preferences desired by the host. At these events, nixologists not only serve the drinks but also educate attendees about the craft and benefits behind their unique concoctions.

The creation of The Nixer was inspired by Kristine Abrams-Petersman's personal journey. Having questioned her own alcohol habits during the pandemic, she discovered a wealth of non-alcoholic beverage options that catered to her social needs without compromising her health. Alongside her husband, Roger Petersman, Kristine seized the opportunity to acquire The Nixer earlier this year when its original owners decided to sell. Since taking over in March, the couple hosted their inaugural event in April and have been on an exciting journey ever since. The Nixer’s official ribbon cutting was in August.

The menu, which evolves according to the events they attend, has featured drinks such as The Rusty, a blend of passion fruit and lemon; Sweet Heat, a botanical drink with strawberry, lime, and ginger; and even non-alcoholic beers. They also offer beverages tailored for kids, like the blue swirl, a guava lemonade with sparkling water.

The overarching mission for The Nixer is simple: provide high-quality, craft beverage options for those who opt out of alcohol, ensuring that their choices don't limit their social experiences. While the Petersmans and The Nixer are not against alcohol, they firmly believe in giving everyone the choice of a craft cocktail, alcoholic or not.

The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Presented by Talking Stick Returns November 4

ON THE SUNLIT LAWNS OF WESTWORLD OF SCOTTSDALE, THE RHYTHMIC SOUNDS OF GALLOPING HORSES WILL ONCE AGAIN FILL THE AIR AS THE 12TH ANNUAL BENTLEY SCOTTSDALE POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS: PRESENTED BY TALKING STICK RETURNS THIS NOVEMBER 4. Touted as America's most attended polo event, the championship promises action, adrenaline, and allure. Nic Roldan, America's top-tier polo player, makes a much-anticipated return, solidifying the event's status on the global map. With his unmatched prowess and charismatic presence, Roldan's participation is a beacon for polo aficionados. Once again, the championships tout both local and international teams, each bringing their distinct flair to the field, making for a riveting, cosmopolitan showdown.

Eight teams will vie for supremacy on the turf, representing regions from Texas to Wales, including PRIDE USA and USA Women’s All-Star team. The thrills commence at 10 a.m. with a vibrant contest between the Texas Polo Club - Garland and PRIDE USA. Sterling Jones, famed actor from hits like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Barbie Movie,” will rub shoulders with fellow polo enthusiasts on the field as a player on the PRIDE USA team. He will be joined by 3-goaler Juan Bollini and Vinny Sangaline. Garland standouts Oscar ChaconHidalgo and Alec Felhaber will also bring their skills to the field.

The second match at 12:15 p.m. promises to be electric as the Arizona Polo Club, sponsored by Lamborghini, faces off against the USA’s Women’s All-Star team. Local polo stalwarts Diego Florez and Andres Camacho, both with over 12 years of association with the event, will steer the men's team, while Danielle Travis, Natalie Grancharov Camacho, and Carolyn Likas represent the women.

The day's highlight will be the clash between the undefeated Bentley Scottsdale’s Aspen Valley Polo Club and the Wales Polo Team from Great Britain at 2:30 p.m. Leading Aspen is USA’s top player, 8-goaler Roldan alongside teammates 3-goal champion Grant Ganzi and patron Melissa Ganzi. Aspen’s fast action will met by some fierce competition as 5-goaler Jason Crowder, alongside Ricky Cooper, and 5-goaler Pete Webb promise a tough battle as they represent the Wales team. With seven Scottsdale titles under their belt, Aspen Valley is primed for an eighth victory.

Then in the final match-up starting at 4 p.m. the North Scottsdale Polo Club, led by another Arizona polo player, Josh Black, will play in a riveting match against New Orleans Polo Club.

Florez, whose ties to the event span 12 years, is not just a competitor but also a passionate advocate for polo. He champions the Scottsdale Polo Academy, which runs out of SandSpur Ranch, 12302 N. 93rd St., located in the heart of Scottsdale’s Cactus equestrian corridor. The academy’s aim, is to introduce enthusiasts to polo in a supportive and secure setting, emphasizing safety and foundational skills.

Natalie Grancharov Camacho, another ardent advocate for Arizona's burgeoning polo scene, shares her infectious zeal for the sport, equating its intensity to mainstream sports like football and hockey. Her love affair with polo began at UC Davis. "Being around the team, the horses, it just felt right,” she reflects. For Camacho, polo is more than a sport; it’s an adrenaline-fueled passion.

Education Barry Goldwater High School Unveils Renovated Giving Closet

Photos courtesy of Deer Valley Unified School District

In an initiative to support families facing financial difficulties, Barry Goldwater High School (BGHS) in north Phoenix has unveiled its freshly renovated Giving Closet. The high school's commitment to assist struggling students and their families has seen significant growth over the years.

The concept of the Giving Closet was originally introduced by Ann Ordway, a current board member. Founded several years ago, its primary purpose has been to assist students of this Title I school, providing resources for those whose families might not have the means. The closet generously offers necessities such as snacks, meals, clothing, school supplies, and even attire for special school events like prom, graduation, and promotion ceremonies.

Recognizing the importance of enhancing the initiative, School Resource Officer (SRO) Valerie Rhodes, newly appointed last year, identified the necessity to expand the project. Collaborating with Toll Brothers and Younger Brothers construction companies, she led the transformation of the Giving Closet into a space mimicking a dignified shopping experience. Their efforts have been supplemented by prominent businesses. Home Depot, Sanderson Ford, and Costco have generously donated funds, aiding in organizational logistics for the closet and catering for workers during the installation.

This endeavor has not been a solitary one. The BGHS leadership and numerous community members have been pivotal in organizing the project and ensuring specific donations. Through their combined efforts, the Deer Valley District and BGHS students are reassured of the community's unwavering care and support.

In celebration of the renovated space, BGHS treated the community to an unveiling of the new space in August. More than just a closet, the revamped Giving Closet serves as a testament to community solidarity. Now, students and their families can access an expanded range of resources, from clothing and formal wear to accessories, hygiene products, and other vital essentials.

Barry Goldwater High School is located at 2820 W. Rose Garden Lane. For more information, visit dvusd.org.

Every year, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) encourage young minds to delve deep into the pages of history through their American History Essay Contest. The students of Ridgeline Academy, located at 33625 N. North Valley Pkwy., in Phoenix, have been active participants in this contest, as the local DAR chapter members visit the campus to engage with the fifth and sixth-grade students. The initiative not only introduces students to the Daughters of the American Revolution but also challenges them to reflect on a specific historical topic and craft an essay.

The American History Essay Contest was designed to stimulate young minds to think creatively about the nation's rich history and learn from it in a novel way. Each academic year, a new essay topic is selected, and guidelines are distributed. The competition is open to all students from grades fifth to eighth, and the submitted essays are evaluated based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.

Ridgeline Academy is thrilled to announce that one of its own, sixthgrader Ella Favia, has been declared the state winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest. The academy is incredibly proud of Favia's achievement and commends her for soaring high and representing the school at such a prestigious level.

It reinforces the notion that a comprehensive understanding of the past is crucial for shaping a better future. Winning this contest is not only a personal achievement for Favia but also serves as an inspiration to her peers at

TINTED TOPS! Kids’ Corner

This is a project that will get your (color) wheels spinning! There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (ROY G BIV). When all seven colors of light combine they produce white light. The colors of objects appear the way they do because of how they interact with light. When an object appears red, it absorbs every color of visible light except red, which it reflects. Thus, how light is absorbed and reflected in relation to these objects is what determines their color.

SUPPLIES

• 1 paper plate or piece of cardstock paper

• 2 rubber bands

• 1 pencil

• 1 pair of scissors

• 1 set of crayons (in ROYGBIV)

CHALLENGE

• Draw a circle with a 4-in diameter on the plate

• Use the pencil to mark the center of the circle

• Cut the circle out from the paper plate

• Mark seven evenly spaced sections on your circle

• Color each section of the circle using the crayons, each section being a different color

• Using your pencil, poke a hole through the middle of the circle

• Secure the pencil in the middle of the circle using the rubber bands

• Spin the top

ASK YOURSELF SOME QUESTIONS

What are the colors of the rainbow? What colors do you think are in white light? What happened to your top when you spun it? How did the colors change? Would this experiment work using a different color plate? Why or why not? How does speed change how the colors change?

Before doing this activity - did you think there was a science to color? Colors are just one of many ways we see art and science connect. Many times art can be inspired by science, and sometimes science needs art to help explain complex ideas and happenings. Can you think of any other ways or places art and science connect?

Montessori
grows in North Phoenix

Karli Roller started teaching in 2013 at a Montessori-like preschool, where there was natural learning and all-natural cleaning products, organic snacks, and more.

“I loved it so much,” says Roller. Naturally, after having her son and daughter, she wanted them to attend a Montessori preschool. And she found one in Cave Creek, where they lived. During the tour in 2016, Roller was offered a teaching role. Since then, she’s opened Montessori preschools to fill the early education gap through the pandemic and post-Covid.

“During the tour of my kids’ school, I mentioned that I used to be a preschool teacher and had my bachelor's degree,” she explains. She taught there for a few years, and then Covid hit.

Moving Montessori Home

Roller clocked out on a Friday at 4 p.m., and by 6 p.m. that day, an email from the owner let her know it would be closing, and they didn't know when it would be reopening.

“That was traumatizing, losing my children's preschool and job in two hours,” she says.

With her kids’ school closed and furloughed from her position, she took over her kids’ education and those from the closed Montessori school.

“Parents of kids from the preschool started to reach out to me saying, ‘Hey, we still have to work, and our child has nowhere to go. Is it OK if we drop them off at your house?’”

Roller had to get creative with space to educate from home, moving all her living room furniture and dining table into the garage. She picked up her work from the closed classroom and opened a preschool in the living room. What began with six kids grew to 12.

“It grew to the point where I didn't have enough space for all the kids that wanted to come,” says Roller. She opened her first Montessori preschool in Cave Creek.

“I had friends reaching out to me from Arcadia, in Scottsdale, where I used to live, saying, ‘We would love to send our kids to your school, but the drive to Cave Creek isn't feasible.’”

While the first Cave Creek location has closed, Roller has opened Anthem and Arcadia locations and is building an East Valley location and another in Cave Creek that will open in 2025.

Roller has a master’s degree in early childhood curriculum, development, and design and a doctoral degree in administrative innovation and leadership.

“I always joke and tell people that I love my schools as much as my biological children,” says Roller. “They are like children to me; they're my passion and life journey.”

Montessori Room’s Roots

Roller also passionately explains Maria Montessori, who, 100 years ago, was the first female physician in Italy. Because she was a woman, they didn’t want to welcome her into the men's club. As a slight against her, they put Montessori in charge of poor and special needs children. She observed them and, after observation, implemented a teaching theology where she gave them tasks that they could do on their own. And then, she introduced mathematics and language in a physical way they could understand.

Soon, people heard about this school of wonder kids doing complex problems. Kings, queens, and royalty from all over Europe started sending their private tutors to study under Montessori to bring her teaching methods back to the royal children. By 1925, more than 1,000 Montessori schools had opened in the United States. Today, there are 15,763 Montessori schools worldwide.

“Maria Montessori believed that experiential learning led to a deeper understanding of language, mathematics, science, music, social interactions, and more,” she says.

Every material in Montessori Room supports child development, supporting a child’s “sensitive periods” and growing them as unique individuals. Children are given the tools to learn through their experiences and at their pace. They are free to explore the natural curiosities that exist in all humans and build a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

“We don't believe in shaming or isolation tactics,” says Roller. “We’ve taken a lot of training on de-escalation and gentle parenting tactics. When you have a child in a heightened emotional state, tactics like gentle compression, putting a hand on their shoulder, or hugging them, if they're open to it, will immediately tell their limbic system in the brain that they're safe and it will start to bring cortisol levels in their brain down.”

Kids aged 3 to 6 all work in the same room so the younger ones can learn from their elders and the older children can develop a sense of leadership and authority.

“Maria Montessori was ahead of her time when she said children learn best from other children,” says Roller.

Montessori Room teachers have credentials from a program accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education. Using the traditional AMI approach for children’s education, Montessori Room focuses on mathematics, language and literature, sensorial, practical life, and, most importantly, empathy and care for themselves and others.

“Early childhood education is undervalued, and we need more people to pay closer attention to it.”

We’re scrambling to keep up with the constantly increasing demand and hope to expand services to include even more children in need,” Steimer says.

Funds raised from the gala play a pivotal role in sustaining and expanding the pet therapy services. Given the sold-out history of the event, supporters are urged to secure their tickets — priced from $225 — without delay.

Now I own a non-toxic housecleaning business, and I use my desire to impact others in a positive way by being the best leader I can be.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Islands in the Stream” by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. My partner, Chad, and I have performed this one at a couple of karaoke nights and we always get a laugh because we’re terrible singers!

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my dad. He passed away when I was in my early 20s and because of that I have been inspired to live life to the fullest, to always be kind, and to take risks!

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… my minidachshund, Pepper. Lately she gets such a kick out of chasing an empty plastic water bottle all over the house. She is such a goofball all the time, she always cracks me up!

THE PERFECT DAY IS… waking up overlooking the beach, a leisurely brunch, a massage, and maybe some sushi for dinner!

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… H.E.L.P Snackz - Homeless Engagement Life Partnership is an organization that assembles healthy bags of food for kids in our community that are homeless or displaced. It’s run by a woman with a HUGE heart by the name of Dawn Marie Rapaport.

MY LIFE IS… by design. I work really

hard to have a life that I’m proud of and happy to live. I am also very lucky to have amazing friends, family, and a loving and supportive partner.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… when Chad took me to La Paz Mexico for my 40th birthday and booked a whale watching tour. We were very lucky to encounter all kinds of marine life that day, including a huge pod of Orcas that played by our boat for two hours. I still pinch myself when I think of that memory.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… staying in an overwater bungalow in Fiji! I’ve seen pictures of this island paradise and can’t wait to get out there someday soon!

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… don’t take it personally! A business coach drilled me with this motto when I was starting my business 12 years ago because I took everything so personally. I’ve learned that everyone has their own journey and I’m only in control of my own.

Real Estate Are Investors Buying Up Homes in North Phoenix?

With the TSMC facility coming to the area, you would think investors are buying up homes in North Phoenix. Yet, in the last quarter of 2022, investors bought 72.2% fewer homes in the 85085 and 85086 zip codes of North Phoenix than they did in the same period of 2021. This decline is similar to what happened nationwide. In the U.S., investor purchases fell by nearly 50% in the last quarter of 2022.

There are a few factors that have contributed to the decline in investor activity in North Phoenix. Rising interest rates have made it more expensive for investors to borrow money, and steady home prices have made it less profitable to flip homes. Additionally, a slowdown in rent growth has made it less attractive for investors to purchase homes to rent out.

The decline in investor activity in North Phoenix is even more pronounced than the decline in investor activity in Phoenix as a whole. This is likely because these zip codes are home to some of the most desirable neighborhoods, and the homes in these neighborhoods are more expensive. As a result, investors are less likely to purchase homes in these zip codes, especially in the current market conditions.

Here is a Q4 2022 breakdown of the number of homes purchased by investors:

• 85085: 140 homes

• 85086: 144 homes

It is important to note that these numbers are only from Redfin, and it is possible that other real estate companies have different data. However, these numbers do provide a general overview of the decline in investor activity in our area.

• Appliance Disposal

• Estate Clean Outs

• Flooring Removal

• Furniture Disposal

• Hot Tub Disposal

• Move Outs

• Playset Removal

• Shed Removal

• Trash Outs

In contrast, other areas of Phoenix are experiencing an increase in investor activity. For example, the 85044 zip code, which is home to the Phoenix Airport, saw a 30% increase in investor activity in Q4 of 2022. This is likely because the Phoenix Airport is a major economic driver for the region, and there is a high demand for rental properties near the airport.

We’ve seen investors shifting their focus to lower-priced homes. For example, the 85040 zip code, which is home to some of the most affordable neighborhoods in Phoenix, saw a 20% increase in investor activity in Q4 of 2022. This is likely due to the fact that lower-priced homes are more affordable for investors considering current interest rates.

The decline in investor activity in the 85085 and 85086 zip codes is good news for homebuyers who are looking to purchase a home in our communities. It means that there will be less competition from investors, and our buyers may be able to negotiate a better price. However, it is important to note that the housing market is still competitive, and we’re advising homebuyers to act quickly when they find a home that they want.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

“Oppenheimer”

The true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s work towards the creation of the atomic bomb and its social fallout.

"Oppenheimer" is one of the most devastating motion pictures to emerge from the studio system in a long while, both in its presentation of its subject and his actions. This isn't a movie about triumph in the face of potential destruction; it's about a selfish man, nay, a selfish group, whose desire for selfpreservation threatens our very existence. Through clever editing and visuals, in both subtext and overt message, we witness the lead's gradual realization of the consequences of his actions— but only after he has acted to save himself. He complies until the deed is done, selecting his moral stance when it suits him. Meanwhile, the supporting characters either defend or confront him. The entire experience is suffocating yet undeniably brilliant.

“Talk

To Me”

A group of teens go too far in a supernatural game and suffer the consequences.

"Talk To Me" possesses a fury in its terror that's rarely seen. Each scene virtually chokes the air out of you, making you feel as if you're in as much danger as the characters. When the violence ensues, it's visceral; you can't look away. Coupled with a standout performance from newcomer Sophie Wilde, this film provides an experience that's both terrifying and emotionally devastating. It's a new installment in the horror canon that will, hopefully, influence many works to come.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”

The four mutant brothers have to step into responsibility when the world is at risk.

"Mutant Mayhem" serves well to introduce younger fans to the series, while also paying tribute to longtime aficionados. It's a solid, entertaining flick, bolstered by the chemistry among the four leads who truly capture the

'teenage' essence implied in the title. While the characterization and story may be somewhat lacking and familiar, the unique and thrilling animation and action more than compensate. The humor appeals to audiences of all ages. It's a fun, lighthearted romp, even if there isn't much depth to delve into.

combined with a thunderous score from Bear McCreary, puts the finishing touch on this film. It's a commendable addition to the creature feature genre.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter”

The crew of the cargo ship Demeter find themselves fighting for their lives upon realizing there’s a stowaway onboard: Dracula.

This film is engagingly surprising, given that it's essentially "Alien" at sea, substituting the Xenomorph for Dracula. It's appeal lies in the direction, which conjures an isolating ambiance, thanks both to the confined space of the ship and the vast emptiness of the surrounding ocean. The narrative delivers a raw brutality that makes viewers flinch, especially a scene in the third act that stands out for its sheer cruelty and viciousness. One drawback is the excessively dark visuals, often obscuring the on-screen action. Nevertheless, the cast's unwavering commitment,

The Flagstaff Trails Passport: FROM FOREST TREKS TO BOUTIQUE RETREATS

As trails lead to discoveries, Flagstaff’s hotel scene unfolds like a trove of stories waiting to be experienced.

Tucked in the vast expanses of the world’s largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest, Flagstaff unveils its newest charm - the Flagstaff Trails Passport. It’s not merely a guide but an invitation to traverse lesser-trodden paths, diving deep into the fabric of a city that fuses nature, culture, and luxury.

The Flagstaff Trails Passport operates with a simple yet engaging premise: check-in at the curated list of local trails, and based on the level of difficulty, earn points. The more you explore, the more rewards you gather. These range from commemorative stickers for just a single trail point, to wooden postcards for 5 points, and even a heartwarming opportunity to give back with a donation made in your name at 10 points to the FTI (Flagstaff Trails Initiative). Passionate hikers hitting the 15-point mark can snag a stylish fanny pack for future adventures.

Each trail in the passport beckons with a unique allure. One-point trails, like the Arizona Trail through Picture Canyon or the Campbell Mesa trail system, offer gentle strolls for those seeking serenity. Meanwhile, the Kachina Trail and the Little Elden Spring Trail, falling under the two-point category, up the ante a bit. And for the thrillseekers, the three-point rank awaits with challenges like the rigorous O’Leary Peak Trail and the lofty Kendrick Mountain Trail.

Little America Hotel Flagstaff emerges as a blend of elegance and wilderness. Located amidst 500 acres of pristine Ponderosa Pine Forest, this AAA Four Diamondrated hotel exudes luxury at every corner. The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the sprawling rooms to the breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks. But it’s not all about the outdoors. The Silver Pine restaurant offers culinary delights, a perfect end to a day spent at nearby attractions like Meteor Crater.

Meanwhile, the High Country Motor Lodge resonates with younger travelers. Set just off Route 66, this boutique-style, pet-friendly hotel merges vintage aesthetics with modern vibes. Its proximity to Riordon Mansion and Northern Arizona University adds to its charm. But it’s the evening entertainment, tailored for Millennials and Gen Zs, that truly sets it apart, offering a fresh twist on Flagstaff hospitality.

Not too far off, the Weatherford Hotel stands as a testament to Flagstaff’s rich history. Dating back to 1897, this quirky-chic establishment retains its historic charm while catering to modern sensibilities. It’s a slice of history, positioned a heartbeat away from Route 66, allowing guests to relive the tales of old while reveling in contemporary comforts.

Outside the walls of these establishments, Flagstaff unfolds its myriad offerings. From exhilarating mountain biking trails, checking out the stars at the Lowell Observatory, leaf peeping in autumn’s hues, to visiting The Museum of Northern Arizona (established as a repository for Indigenous material and natural history specimens), to miles of Route 66 that echo with the mountain city’s vibrant culture, there’s something for everyone.

Of course, traversing trails and exploring Flagstaff’s gems can ignite a hunger only the city can satiate. James Beard nominees include Proper Meats + Provisions, Atria Restaurant, and Shift Kitchen + Bar, and are ready to tantalize the taste buds.

In Flagstaff, trails don’t just lead to nature’s wonders, but to boutique retreats, gastronomic adventures, and historic tales. So, grab your passport, let Flagstaff guide your steps and heartbeats, and dive deep into the city’s many tales. They’re all waiting to be written in your travel chronicles.

It’s a good idea to visit the experts at the Visitor Center, 1 E. Route 66, upon your Flagstaff arrival, as they can assist with recommendations and itinerary things to do.
