This small, friendly village (1182 m) is a popular starting point for hikes and bike rides into the mountains of the Rosengarten massif, the rose-filled kingdom of the mythical King Laurin. Nova Levante is also an excellent base for visitors wishing to explore the peaks and trails around Lago di Carezza lake. A nearby cable car gives access to this area in just a matter of minutes.

An idyllic mountain village, Ega (1120 m) is located on the slopes of the Samberg mountain with its lush meadows, dense forests, friendly locals and genuinely warm hospitality. It is just a short walk from Obereggen, which is situated slightly further up the mountain. The Church of Saint Nicholas in the centre of the village has an eyecatching Gothic spire.

CAREZZA

MONTE SAN PIETRO

Located at the foot of the Rosengarten and Latemar mountain chains, the village of Carezza (1519 m) takes its name from the nearby Lago di Carezza lake. With its shimmering shades of green, blue and turquoise, the water in this natural mountain lake has to be seen to be believed. The forests and meadows around the lake are popular with hikers and mountain bikers in summer, while in winter the area is home to the sunniest ski resort in Südtirol-Alto Adige.

Nature, peace, spirituality. In Monte San Pietro (1380 m), pilgrims and golfers cross paths near the famous Maria Weißenstein church.

This pretty village is home to the region’s most traditional 18-hole golf course, which has been designed to blend in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

NOVA PONENTE

COLLEPIETRA

Nova Ponente (1350 m) is famous for its sunny location and fabulous views of the Latemar massif, the Weißhorn mountain, the Schwarzhorn mountain, the Rosengarten massif and the mighty Schlern. Thanks to its position perched on a high plateau above the valley floor, hikers and bikers in Nova Ponente enjoy plenty of sunshine well into the evening.

In 2017 Nova Ponente was the village with the most hours of sunshine anywhere in Südtirol-Alto Adige.

Collepietra (823 m) is officially Europe’s first Star Village. The sunny plateau is home to the region’s only solar observatory, while the nearby planetarium and its Planet Trail invite visitors to learn all about our universe and beyond.

OBEREGGEN This small village (1500 m) below the Latemar massif is an untouched mountain paradise. In summer the Latemarium nature park has eight themed trails and a 360° viewing platform. In winter, Obereggen becomes the Ski Center Latemar – one of the most popular winter sports resorts in the region.

Eggental-Val d’Ega has a comprehensive network of walking and hiking trails at the foot of the Rosengarten and Latemar massifs.

Visitors of all ages and fitness levels can look forward to exploring 530 kilometres of paths connecting 32 mountain huts.

LATEMARIUM: A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE There is no better way of exploring Eggental-Val d’Ega than on foot – and there is no better place to start than the Latemarium nature park. It has eight themed walking trails suitable for visitors of all ages, with information boards placed at regular intervals along each of these well-signposted routes. The LATEMAR.360 viewing platform offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The themed walking trails are an educative experience combining local art, history and nature. The Kirchsteig Adventure Trail invites walkers to learn about flora and fauna, agriculture and forestry in a fun and interactive way.

Highlights include a listening station, a telescope, a wild animal memory game and a mill. A great day out for all the family!

This new adventure trail begins at the top station of the Nova Levante cable car. It is a leisurely walk of about 40 minutes along the bottom of the Catinaccio mountains to a special vantage point at the foot of the Rotwand, a towering rock face once visited by Austrian Empress “Sissi”. The huge "Kaiserstein" (“Emperor’s Stone”) was named after her. This is where a new viewing platform with fascinating views of the Latemar and the Rosengarten peaks is currently being built.

ROCK CLIMBING

The mountains of the Latemar and Rosengarten massifs are a rock climbing paradise in the heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since the rise of alpinism as a leisure activity over 100 years ago, the shimmering white rock faces of the Dolomites have drawn climbers from around the world.

An alternative to traditional rock climbing, ‘via ferrata’ are also a popular way of exploring the mountains. These permanent climbing routes have handholds, footholds, ladders and steel ropes firmly

anchored into the rock, making them ideal for those who enjoy climbing but want to reduce the risk level to a minimum. There are five via ferrata in Eggental-Val d’Ega. Visitors with a head for heights and nerves of steel can also try the obstacle courses many metres above the ground in the Obereggen high-rope adventure park. Last but not least, beginners of all ages new to climbing can take part in the rock climbing taster sessions near the Lago di Carezza lake.

Eggental-Val d’Ega is one huge playground for experienced and ambitious mountain bikers. In the area around the Rosengarten and Latemar massifs there are countless trails and singletrails accessible from March until November for mountain bikers, freeriders and e-bike riders. One major advantage of the large, well-distributed network of walking and biking trails in Eggental-Val d’Ega is that walkers and bikers don’t get in the way of each other.

Highlights include the thrilling Carezza Trail and region’s two bike parks as well as the numerous mountain bike schools, shops and rental stations throughout Eggental-Val d’Ega. A weekly mountain bike programme includes guided rides for mountain bikers and e-bike riders on the best local trails – and holders of the Bike Card receive discounted access to the lifts and cable cars.

BIKEPARK NOVA PONENTE The Bikepark Nova Ponente gives mountain bikers of all ages and abilities – from complete novices all the way through to experts – the chance to improve their bike-handling skills on the park’s many jumps, berms, rollers, drops, rock gardens and step-downs.

TRAININGPARK CAREZZA Located next to the top of the Nova Levante cable car, the Carezza Training Park has a pump track and a jump line as well as plenty of other technical features like switchback corners, rock gardens, drops, berms, narrow Northshore elements and hurdles to practise your bunny-hops. BIKETRAIL CAREZZA This attractive mountain bike trail with plenty of flow is suitable for riders of all abilities. It starts at the top of the Nova Levante cable car and leads all the way down to the village of Nova Levante. Along the 4.4km trail dropping 500 vertical metres from start to finish there are plenty of berms, switchbacks and Northshore elements.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY WALKS Discover the Dolomites together! Families with children can look forward to exploring Eggental-Val d’Ega and the mountains of the Rosengarten and Latemar massifs with their many paths, trails and spectacular vantage points.

The region has plenty of short walks for families with younger children leading through meadows, past lakes and to enchanting forest clearings. Many of these trails are suitable for pushchairs and buggies.

Older children, on the other hand, will enjoy the themed trails in the Latemarium nature park with their many information boards giving insights into local flora, fauna, geology and history.

ADVENTURE PLAY AREAS & WALKING TRAILS Eggental-Val d’Ega is also home to numerous adventure play areas and walking trails such as the Forest Trail in Lärchenwaldele and the Star Trail in Collepietra. Almost all the valley’s seven villages have their own outdoor play area with activities ranging from mountain bike skills trails to open-air pools, mini-golf courses and summer toboggan runs. Courageous children wishing to scale the heights can take part in a rock climbing taster session, while budding young astronauts can learn all about the night sky at the Collepietra observatory and on the nearby Planet Trail. Or why not visit a mountain farm, learn how to bake bread and meet the friendly animals?

Playing a round of golf in front of the craggy Dolomites is not only a sporting challenge but an incredible natural experience in its own right. Eggental-Val d’Ega is home to two golf courses. The Eggental-Val d’Ega region at the foot of the mighty Rosengarten and Latemar massifs is home to countless natural highlights, from the shimmering turquoise Lago di Carezza lake to the bizarre earth pyramids and the geologically fascinating Bletterbachschlucht gorge.

Walkers can look forward to an incredible range of panoramas in just one day. And when evening comes, the famous ‘enrosadira’ alpine glow bathes the pale rock faces of the Dolomites in rich hues of pink, purple, orange and red.

LAGO DI CAREZZA LAKE Lago di Carezza lake – known in the local language Ladin as “Lec de Ergobando” or “the rainbow lake” – is a magical place. This small blue-green-turquoise body of water in the mountains above Nova Levante changes colour depending on which angle you view it from.

It is fed by underground springs in the mountains of the Latemar massif and can be up to 300 metres long and 140 metres wide.

COLLEPIETRA EARTH PYRAMIDS The Collepietra earth pyramids can be found near the Katzenbachschlucht gorge. These eye-catching natural phenomena were formed over many thousands of years by earth deposits left behind as the glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age. The resulting pyramids, some up to 30 metres high, can be visited on a three-hour walk from Collepietra to the earth pyramids and back.

GEOPARC BLETTERBACH The GEOPARC Bletterbach invites visitors to embark on a geological journey back in time. Its guided tours, themed paths and family walks give fascinating insights into this gorge in the heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. Embark on a journey through 40 million years of history and learn all about the different types of rock which make up this fascinating site of outstanding natural beauty.

NATURAL HIGHLIGHTS

‘ENROSADIRA’ THE ALPINE GLOW OF THE DOLOMITES In the Alps it is known as alpine glow, while in the Italian Dolomites it takes its name from the local language Ladin: enrosadira. The phenomenon is one and the same: as the sun sets, the mountains are bathed in hues of red, pink, orange and purple. According to the local legend of King Laurin, this natural phenomenon is a reminder of the majestic rose garden the king once planted in the mountains – and which still gives the Rosengarten massif its name today. Legend has it that King Laurin placed a curse on these mountains and condemned their beauty never to be seen again. However, in his curse he forgot to include the twilight, which is why the peaks still glow brightly every evening as the sun slowly sets. There are few if any places in the Dolomites where the phenomenon of enrosadira is as spectacular as at the Rosengarten massif.

Join us on a fascinating adventure through the starry night sky! Our journey begins in the quiet mountain village of Collepietra, at the foot of the mighty Dolomites. Together with San Valentino, Cornedo all'Isarco and Cardano, Collepietra is officially the Europe’s first Star Village. The village square in the heart of San Valentino is home to one of the most modern planetariums anywhere in the world. In the nearby observatory visitors can watch the night sky, while during the daytime there is a sun observatory open to the public. Last but not least, don’t forget to check out the seven-kilometre-long Planet Trail starting at the observatory and showing the distances between the planets in our solar system to scale.

Astronomers of all ages can look forward to a fascinating experience at the Max Valier star observatory with its six-metre-high dome. The oversized mirror telescope makes it possible to see millions of celestial bodies in the night sky, including the planets of our solar system. During the daytime hours the nearby Peter Anich sun observatory is the perfect place from which to watch the movements of the life-giving sun.

PLANETARIUM Experience the feeling of being an astronaut at the planetarium on the village square in San Valentino! A state-of-the-art simulator projects the night sky in fascinating detail onto a dome measuring eight metres in diameter. Thanks to 3D technology and a projection definition of around 12 million pixels, you and your fellow space travellers really will have the feeling of rushing at the speed of light through the galaxy.

PLANET TRAIL The Planet Trail starts in Collepietra and leads through meadows, forests and biotopes. On a scale of 1:1 billion, it shows our solar system and its individual planets. Another highlight along the trail is the Rocket Tree House, where children can pretend to be astronauts and blast off into space. An app developed by izi.TRAVEL gives interesting information in the palm of your hand as you make your way along the trail.

CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

Castles, churches, monuments, museums and even an observatory Eggental-Val d'Ega has much to offer visitors interested in local history and culture. Highlights include Cornedo Castle and the Maria Weißenstein church of pilgrimage perched high above Monte S. Pietro, while the tiny Chapel of St Helena offers the ideal setting for a little quiet contemplation. The local history museum in Collepietra provides an insight into daily life in this previously remote valley.

MARIA WEISSENSTEIN CHURCH OF PILGRIMAGE Enjoying a majestic position overlooking the village of Monte S. Pietro, the Maria Weißenstein church of pilgrimage was built by the hermit Leonhard Weißensteiner in 1553 when the Mother of God appeared to him after he fell into a gorge. Over the centuries the complex has grown significantly, but the chapel he built still lies at its core. This “Dolomite cathedral”, as it is known, became world-famous in 1988 when it received a visit from Pope John Paul II. Pilgrims and those in search of spiritual guidance come to Maria Weißenstein to reflect on life, pray and be close to God.

COLLEPIETRA LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM The local history museum in Collepietra gives visitors an authentic insight into everyday life and customs in Eggental-Val d‘Ega. The main focus of the exhibition is on day-to-day life in what was until relatively recently a remote mountain valley where residents endured a hard life. Exhibits showcase the role of religion, farming, handicrafts, sport, hunting and traditions in Eggental-Val d’Ega over the centuries.

The three-storey building housing the museum is a piece of local history in its own right and has a number of traditional wood-panelled parlours.

CHAPEL OF ST HELENA The charming Chapel of St Helena is just a half an hour‘s walk from Nova Ponente and has an interesting series of wall paintings. Originally erected on a heathen place of worship, the building itself dates all the way back to the 12th century and still has a number of original frescoes showing life in the Middle Ages. The frescoes added around the year 1400 are of outstanding quality.

CORNEDO CASTLE Perched high on a hill overlooking the village of Cornedo all'Isarco stands Cornedo Castle with its fortress wall, residential building and impressive tower. It was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Greifenstein and redesigned many times over the centuries. Its current form and appearance date back to the 16th century. The castle is open to members of the general public from April until October upon request.

SITES OF HISTORICAL INTEREST IN SÜDTIROL-ALTO ADIGE A stay in Eggental-Val d’Ega is a great opportunity to explore the many sights of historical interest throughout Südtirol-Alto Adige. This northernmost province of Italy is home to many attractions such as fortresses, castles, churches, monasteries and museums, all giving a unique insight into the history and culture of this mountainous region. The towns of Bolzano, Merano, Chiusa and Bressanone lie within a radius of 20-50 kilometres from Eggental-Val d’Ega. The archaeological museum in the regional capital Bolzano is home to Ötzi the Iceman, while the nearby Lago di Caldaro lake and the vineyards in Oltradige are also well worth a visit throughout the year.

LEGENDES OF THE DOLOMITES

A DIFFERENT VERSION… ...OF THE LEGEND OF LAGO DI CAREZZA If you have ever heard or read the original legend of the water-nymph of the Lago di Carezza lake, you will know the supposed reason why the Lago di Carezza lake is called the “Rainbow Lake”! But ours is a completely new version… …the water-nymph loved to sit on the bank and braid her long hair into plaits as her soft melodies drifted over the waters. Nothing gave her so much peace or joy as these moments of true happiness.

But one strange day it all felt different from usual. The water-nymph had the impression that she was no longer alone at the lake. And then she saw a dark figure in the distance, unable to take its fiery eyes off her - the Wizard of Masarè. He tried again and again to ensnare the beautiful maid with his words and tricks and thus spirit her off.

But the nymph would always flee into the water, leaving the Wizard standing glumly at the water’s edge.

As the beautiful damsel emerged from the water early one morning, she saw the most magical sight she had ever seen in all her days: a stunningly bright rainbow above the lake. But what was that over there? As she saw the rogue lurking behind a tree on the bank, she knew that this was just one more of his tricks to lure her away with him. Disheartened she dived back below the waves and swore never again to return to the surface! As she swam in fright to where the lake was at its deepest and darkest, jewels and colourful fragments of the rainbow suddenly plunged down to her, making the waters shimmer around the nymph and all the other denizens. And so it came to pass that the water-nymph never again felt the urge to visit the shores of her beautiful “Rainbow Lake”.
