From Sherry Taber, President of the Friends of the Egan Library:

friends

Dear Friends of Egan LibraryWhat a roller-coaster the last 18 months have been for everyone! Despite all the challenges presented by COVID-19, we can be very proud of the Egan Library staff for maintaining library services to students, faculty, staff, and the community throughout! That provided a measure of normality as everyone struggled to carry on, pursuing their education, teaching and research commitments. I am hopeful that with Juneau and the campus having a high vaccination rate Fall 2021 will support a new normal of academic and social activity at Egan Library and throughout UAS. Do plan to join us for the Evening at Egan lecture series this fall - I look forward to seeing you there. Sherry Taber

students can't learn from...

When students have free, day-one access to course materials, grades improve and withdrawal rates decrease, especially for those students traditionally underrepresented in higher ed (Colvard et. al, 2018). Open Educational Resources (OER) are free alternatives to expensive textbooks. Open UAS is a textbook affordability and OER initiative of the UAS Egan Library and the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (C.E.L.T.). Open UAS advocates and promotes open educational practices on campus and provides faculty development and support in the discovery, creation, and adoption of OER. Faculty use of OER signals an awareness of rising textbook prices and an effort to select course materials with equity, student cost, and student success in mind. This library program has relied entirely on ad-hoc funding. Donor support would enable Open UAS to expand faculty development offerings, purchase publishing tools, and provide adoption and creation grants for faculty adopting and creating OER in UAS courses.

Jonas Lamb coordinates Open UAS and during his Spring 2020 Sabbatical spent some time working with colleagues at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey British Columbia (SE Vancouver). One of those colleagues, Rajiv Jhangiani is a super star in the world of open education. In 2018, Jhangiani testified before the United Nations where he articulated the potential of free learning resources to provide unrestricted access to knowledge as a critical component of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Rajiv Jhangiani is known for his advocacy of open education, but he also has one of the best avatars on academic Twitter. The photo, staged at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, pays homage to the researcher’s previous career as a dancer. Photo courtesy of Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

KPU is at the forefront of open education and was the first institution in Canada to offer Z-degree programs. A Z-degree is an entire academic program, an Associates or Bachelors degree that can be completed without purchasing a textbook!

A team of UAS faculty have been selected to participate in a year long Institute on OER during the next academic year. The team will develop a project (possibly a Z-degree) in alignment with the Strategic Plan for Open Education at UAS which Jonas wrote during his sabbatical.

Since 2016, Open UAS has saved over 2200 students an estimated $205,705 in course materials costs. The pandemic brought attention to existing disparities in access to technology and education while also raising awareness of the value of open educational resources in alleviating some of those barriers. Faculty adoption of OER has increased substantially over the past two years, saving students $87,000 during COVID impacted terms alone!

Jonas wants readers to know the sabbatical wasn’t all work and no play. During this time he travelled with his snow-chasing family to Japan and then spent two months living in Whistler, B.C where they honed their ski bum ethic. More on their adventures.

The institutional repository brings the talents of UAS for the world to see. Among other scholarship and creative activity hosted on the institutional repository (IR) ScholarWorks, you can find two beloved publications: Summit and Tidal Echoes. Egan Library brings the unique work of UAS to you and to the greater world population.

Summit: The UAS Writing Center's Collection of Exceptional Academic Works (2019/2020 and 2020/2021 editions)

Tidal Echoes Literary & Arts Journal (since 2003)

In the journal Summit, student editors at the UAS Writing Center annually highlight the best of student academic papers in this publication, and they award the Ernestine Hayes Award for Excellence in Academic Writing, to student pieces written in and for our bachelor’s programs.

Tidal Echoes “is a literary and art journal that showcases the art and writing of Southeast Alaskans. It is sponsored and administered by the University of Alaska Southeast, which has campuses in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan.” (from collection page in ScholarWorks@UA)

Topics you can read about in Summit range from: The Adaptive Significance of Infanticide in Primates (Cruz), Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Philosophy of Composition” and “The Bells” (Erickson), and The Home Front: The Vietnam War vs. the “War” on COVID-19 (Hein).

Egan Library staff have scanned copies of the literary arts journal from as far back as 2003 and up until the latest edition. On ScholarWorks you can view photography and art in full color, and read poems and creative essays.

The Egan Library's tumultuous 2020 was chronicled on Social Media to a greater extent than past years. Continuous updates and reminders about changes were mixed in with informational videos, sample new print and electronic books, and a ton of new photography from around the library and Juneau. Most of the photography was Mary Glaves' - her beautiful outdoor photography from Spring 2020 is worth the stroll through memory lane!
