From Kathy Kolkhorst Ruddy, President of the Friends of the Egan Library: I am delighted to be invited to be included in the newsletter! As a patron of this library since it was constructed, I am eager to have the library be highlighted as one of the treasures of Juneau.

Even in our electronic age, there is something comforting about holding a real book, and turning the pages in anticipation of what is to come, and how the story unfolds, or how the author in the nonfiction world wants you to know.

I am an attorney, mostly retired after 30 years of work in Juneau. Now my time can be spent learning things I always wanted to know, but didn't have the time for.

Farewell Megan Watson Megan has accepted her dream job as Performing Arts Librarian for Reed College in Portland. Megan will be leaving at the end of this academic year. She's very much enjoyed the opportunity to work with students, staff, faculty, and community members at UAS. THIRD ANNUAL

Authors' Reception Friday April 6th, the Friends of the Egan Library (a network of the UAS Alumni & Friends) will host our third annual reception recognizing members of the UAS community publishing scholarly and creative work in 2017. Featuring remarks

by Provost Karen Carey, 2017 invited UAS Author Allison Bidlack, and a reading by Emily Wall and Lance X̱'unei Twitchell.

Regional Library Director Elise Tomlinson will recognize faculty authors including a few “special” awards.

Join the Friends of the Egan Library, UAS Alumni & Friends, and UAS faculty for conversation, drinks, and appetizers.

Invitation to this event is a major benefit of membership in the Friends, and we hope to see you there!

This is a 21 and over event.

NOW STREAMING @ UAS

The state and university budget situations have led to the library having to cut resources in recent years. In an effort to strategically invest in a new resource, the library and faculty explored trials of several new databases. After reviewing feedback and use, Librarians settled on adding Kanopy Streaming Videos, a collection of documentaries and famous films.

Our arrangement with Kanopy allows us to provide access to all of the titles in the collection for streaming. Only once a title has been viewed several times will the library have to pay for a license to the video. Kanopy is available on campus, and via login off-campus, so it's a great resource for students, faculty, and staff! uas.kanopy.com

Includes over 30,000 films from 1,000 top producers such as Criterion Collection, Media Education Foundation, Great Courses, New Day, California Newsreel, Kino Lorber, & PBS. Kanopy app is available for all major devices (Roku, iOS, Android, AppleTV, ChromeCast).

Films come with public performance rights.

Closed Captioning is available for the majority of the collection (English, Spanish and more for subtitled films).

All films include transcripts.

Only films that are viewed 4 times by unique users in a 12 month period will trigger for purchase.

Create your own personal Kanopy account to build playlists with full videos or clips.

Films can be embedded in Blackboard for easy student viewing.

Citations available in APA, MLA and Chicago styles.

HONORING ḴAALḴÁAWU CYRIL GEORGE, SR. The library invites you to stop by and look at the recently installed display of photos, narratives, and items relating to the life of Ḵaalḵáawu Cyril George, Sr. The display case is located at the rear of the main floor and is adjacent to the Cyril George Collection. This collection honors indigenous voices and Alaska Native Knowledge in a collection of over 3,000 titles.

Cyril George, Sr. was a culture bearer, orator, teacher, story teller, musician, and boat builder, among his many pursuits. In the case are his guitar, a case of pennies he collected for his grandchildren, a sealing spear, and testimonials to his life.

Kathy Ruddy, a longtime friend of Cyril George and an executor of his estate, loaned us the items in the case and shared knowledge and stories of this remarkable individual. We are grateful to Kathy for her contribution.
